Willie Ellis, 71, of Jesup diedNov. 24, 2004, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The Waynesboro, Miss., native had lived in Wayne County many years. He fellowshipped with House of Worship and Ministries and New Beginnings Christian Fellowship of Jesup. He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Ellis of Jesup; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marva and Bruce Merritt of Pearson and Tiffany Hillman of Jesup; two sisters, Lennie M. McRae and Flora M. Ellis, both of Jesup; and a host of other relatives. Funeral services were held Nov. 28 at House of Worship and Ministries with Mickey Tomberlin and Scottie Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Jesup City Cemetery. Royal Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.
James B. Hill
James B. Hill, 72, diedNov. 29, 2004, at Candler Hospital. He was a native of Screven, living most of his life in Savannah. He owned and operated The Office Lounge, JB Tavern an Grumpy’s Pub. He was a former member of the Jaycee’s Hootenannies. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 184. He was preceded in death by his son, James B. “Jimbo” Hill Jr. Survivors are his wife, Vicki Hill of Savannah; a daughter, Nancy Findley of Rincon; a stepdaughter, Christine Stanley of Rincon; a stepson, Anthony Kebhart of Woodstock, Va.; a sister, Jolene Daughtry of Savannah; one grandson; one granddaughter; two step-grandsons; two step-granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. Fox and Weeks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rev. Jerry J. Jones
The Rev. Jerry J. Jones, 81, of Jesup diedNov. 30, 2004, in Appling County from injuries received in an automobile accident. The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County for many years. A retired Southern Railroad employee, he pastored several area churches: Surrency Grove Baptist Church in Surrency, Grove Baptist Church in Baxley, Mary Grove Baptist Church in Gardi and First African Missionary Baptist Church in Everett City. He entered the ministry in October of 1959 and began pastoring in October of 1963 at his home church of Surrency Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Willie B. Jones of Jesup; two daughters, Evone Jones of Jesup and Cindy J. Jones of Atlanta; six sons and two daughters-in-law, Elijah and Claudia Jones of Wilmington, Del., Chester and Arlene Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., Leland Jones of Atlanta, Terry L. Jones of Baxley and Jerome A. and Tommy L. Jones, both of Jesup; three sisters, Lillie M. Brown, Gladys Jones and Essie L. Alderman, all of Wilmington, Del.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James and Mae-Etta Jones, the Rev. Jerusha and Naomi Jones, all of Wilmington, Del., and Quilla Lee Jones of Jesup; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral services were Saturday at 11 a.m. at Surrency Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Royal Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.
Herman N. Fennel
Herman N. Fennel, 73, of Jesup diedOctober 25, 2005, after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Anderson Drive Baptist Church and was a 30-year retiree with the U.S. Army. He was a member of several organizations including Germany Blue Lodge, Germany Shrine Club, and the Ben Gibbs Chapter No. 299 Order of the Eastern Star of Jesup. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. Survivors include his wife of 33 year, Iris Dixon Jones Fennel of Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joey and Elisha Fennel of Bristol and Rob and Leisa Fennel of Jesup; two step-daughters and a son-in-law, Kay and Pat Patterson of Ubly Mich., and Sandra Jones of Daytona Beach, Fla.; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Rickey and Cindy Jones of Blackshear; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Vonnie Moseley and Ray Taylor of Savannah, Gladys Nichols of Jacksonville, Fla., Ovaleen Harrell, Hilda and Chuck Van Meter and Ruby and Jarrell Coffee all of Jesup; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, Joe and Marie Fennel, Gary and Etwendell Fennel, both of Jesup and Delmer and Helen Fennel of Brunswick; five grandchildren, Brianne, Hannah, Ridge, Michael and Lorabeth; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Rev. Frank S. Cason, 76, of Jesup diedOct. 21, 2005, after an extended illness. The Pierce County native had lived in Wayne County the past 47 years. He was a retired Baptist minister, a U.S. Marine veteran, and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Ritch Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Geneva Dennison Cason of Jesup; a daughter, Carolyn Cason of Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ben and Kimberly Cason of Jesup and Travis and Cathy Cason of Hazlehurst; two brothers, Randall Cason and Lewis Cason, both of Offerman; three sisters, Sarah Bell Neilson of Offerman, Mary Miller of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Bertie Mae Miller of Orange Park, Fla.; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Lavern R. Coblentz, 32, of Screven diedOct. 22, 2005 after an extended illness. The Davidson County, Tenn., native had lived in Wayne County for five weeks. He attended the Lake Grace Mennonite Church and was a construction crew leader. He was predeceased by his mother, Naomi Byler Coblentz. Survivors include his wife, Jennifer L. Coblentz of Screven; a daughter, Jessica Coblentz of Screven; twin sons, Justin and Jared Coblentz, of Screven; his parents, William J. and Miriam Coblentz of Lincoln, Mo.; four sisters, Judy Jones, of Sweet Springs, Mo., Tina Shrock of Screven, Lisa Weaver of Logan, Ohio, and Darlene Coblentz of Lincoln, Mo.; three brothers, Wayne Coblentz of Halsey, Oregon, Tim Coblentz of Screven, and Jonathan Coblentz of Lincoln, Mo.; several nieces and nephews. James E. “Junior” Douberly Jr., 63, of Jesup diedOct. 24, 2005, after a short illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Unity Church of God and retired Brunswick Pulp and Paper Millwright with Local No. 865 out of Brunswick. He was an avid hunter and woodworker. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Mary Johnson Douberly of Jesup; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Alan Thomason of Jesup; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Donna Drury of Jesup; two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Ainsley Stewart of Jesup and Andy and Patty Stewart of Waynesboro; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Charlie DeLaigle of Waynesboro; three sisters, Linda Green, Wanda Willis, Phyllis Douberly of Hortense; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include four daughters, Sherry Kicklighter, Myrtice Hall Mullis, both of Jesup, Melinda Hall of Brunswick and Jamie Phillips of Barstool, Calif.; a son, James Hall Jr., of Jesup; two sisters, Anna Grantham of Jesup and Susie Gilliam of Nashville; three brothers, Bill Hall, Joe Hall and Alvin Hall all of Jesup; 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Janie Sue Latham, 51, of Baxley diedOct. 28, 2005, in Hospice of Golden Isles. A life-long resident of Appling County, Latham attended Covenant Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Blair Franklin Latham Jr. and Dareen Eason Latham. She is survived by two sisters, Jean Latham of Brunswick and Rhonda Wolfe of Jesup; a nephew and niece -in-law, Shawn and Briana Stanley of Somerset, Ky.; a great-grandnephew, Dillon Stanley of Jesup; and a great-grandniece, Graham Olivia Stanley of Somerset, Ky. She was a member of the Ludowici First Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Survivors are her husband of 39 years, James D. Brewer, Jr., of Ludowici; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patsy Manning of Screven, and Bettye and Randy Butler of Midway; six grandchildren, Sanford Manning Jr., Shane Manning, both of Ellijay, Kyle Manning of Kissimmee, Fla., Christy Balaskiewicz of Jesup, Tonya Butler of Savannah, Brandi Bulter of Midway and six great-grandchildren. The Appling County native was a former employee of Atlantic Coastline Railroad, a lifelong farmer and former owner of Thornton’s Grocery in Appling County. He was a Christian. Survivors are his wife of 60 years, Waunell Denison Thornton of Bristol; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ruth and Willis Griffis of Jesup, Juanita Dykes Narvaez of Waycross, Shirley and Ronnie Thornton of Odum and Lori and R. Hayden Rozier II of Screven; a sister, Ruby Thornton of Bristol; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Ann Thornton of Bristol; six grandchildren, Mary Vaughn, James Robert Dykes IV, Christopher Michael Dykes, Angela Thornton, Randall H. Rozier III and Lorielle C. Rozier; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Vaughn, Joshua Dykes and Cooper P. Dykes; several nieces and nephews. Edward Francis Maske
Screven - Edward Francis Maske, age 67, diedFriday, January 27, 2006 in Wayne County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was a native of Jackson, Michigan residing in Georgia for the past thirty years. He retired from the United States Navy after thirty years of service. He was a member of the Navy Fleet Reserves and attended the Screven Church of God. He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years Betty Jean Maske, two step-daughters Joann Webb and Bobbie Jean Thornton both of Brunswick, one step-son Jackie L. Harris of Screven. Two children Edward Lawrence Maske and Natalie Maske both of Erie, Pennsylvania, one sister Jackie Seamon of Parma, Michigan, thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. One niece and two nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Screven Church of God with Reverend Terry Jones officiating. iIntermentwill follow in Old Ritch Cemetery with full military honors. Carlton Manning Thornton
Albany - Carlton Manning Thornton, 84, of Albany passed away on Jan. 30, 2006, at his residence. A native of Screven, he has lived in Albany since 1961, where he was a member of Providence Assembly of God. He was retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and the owner of Thornton’s BBQ. He was the account manager at Scripto Credit Union in Atlanta and at one time taught math at Screven High School. He served in the United States Army in WWII and received a Purple Heart for an injury received in Papua New Guinea. He served as church clerk for East Atlanta Church of God, Avondale Church of God and Hemphill Avenue Church of God. He was a committed Christian and a loving husband to Miriam Racile Ball Thornton, whom he marriedFeb. 21, 1946 in Rockmart. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Thornton of Albany; two daughters and one son-in-law, Wynell and Michael Ellis of Cleveland, Tenn., and Winona Greenway of Albany; a son and daughter-in-law, Manning and Jane Thornton of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren and four grandchildren-in-law, Alisa and Kyle Triplett, Alana and Mark Fulmer, Gina Brahton Voraritskul, Joy Ellis, Becky Thornton, Jonathon and Jana Thornton, Michelle Greenway, and Brandon Greenway; four great-grandchildren, Amanda Ellis, Michael Hackett, Trinity Fulmer and Gracey Thornton; a sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Phil Trainor of Raleigh, N.C. Thornton was preceded in death by his parents, Ozzie Darling and Anna Viola Harris Thornton, and his brother, Collis Thornton. The funeral service will be today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern in Albany. Dr. Manning Thornton and the Rev.
