A native of Banks County, Mr. Free was bornNovember 28, 1930. He was a son of the late Luther and Iola Lord Free.
Mr. Free had lived in the Athens area for most of his life and was a retired carpenter. He was connected with Christian Hardware for a number of years. Mr. Free was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva E. Gearing Free, and a son, Ottis Lloyd Free.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, at Community Baptist Church with the Revs. David Strickland and Dub Adkins officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Gordon, Athens, Patricia Ann Booth, Ila, and Juanita Irwin, Nicholson; two sons, David Free and Terry Free, both of Athens; three sisters, Worlene Ford, Rogersville, Tenn., Kathline Strickland, Jefferson, and Martha Jane Shiver, Athens; one brother, Henry Free, Athens; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

DACULA - Mrs. Clara M. Porter, 81, diedFriday, July 30, 1999, at Windward Nursing Home following an extended illness.
A native of Dacula, Mrs. Porter was a homemaker and a member of Sharon Baptist Church, Hoschton.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 1, in the chapel of Tapp Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. Ricky Thrasher officiating. Burial was in the Sharon Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Luther, Dacula; nephews and wives, Sam and Roberta Sloan, Dacula, and Frank and Diane Luther, Lithonia; and four nieces, Brenda Baucom, Stark, Fla., Movine Wingo and Mildred Brown, both of Gainesville, and Marie Orr, Jefferson.

LOGANVILLE - Mrs. Rhonda L. Garvin, 50, niece of Clyde and Alice Jackson, Jefferson, diedSaturday, July 31, 1999.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 2, in the chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, with the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Roy Lee Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, Buford.
Survivors, in addition to her uncle and aunt, include her husband, Robert Garvin; two sons, Gene Garvin and Greg Garvin, both of Winder; her mother, Dartha B. Jackson, Winder; two sisters, Debbie Stanfield, Buford, and Betty Stanfield, Gainesville; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Hall County native
GILLSVILLE - J.R. "Bob" House, 88, diedFriday, July 30, 1999, at Columbia Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. House was a native and lifetime resident of Hall County. He had been a business partner with his father and together they operated D.C. House & Son General Store in Gillsville. They also owned and operated a farm and a cotton gin.
Mr. House served as office manager for the Hall County Tax Assessor's Office and had also served as the chief tax assessor for Hall County. He was a charter member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Gillsville, where he also served as a deacon.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 1, at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Mr. House's nephew, the Rev. W. Sam Henderson, and the Rev. Darryl Womack officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Louise House, Gillsville; son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Joan House, Gillsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and James Irvin and Carolyn and Downey Bryant, all of Gillsville; two sisters, Margaret House Frankum, Cleveland, and Winnie House Perry, Atlanta; grandchildren Harriett and David Woodward, Lawrenceville, Robert and Angela House, Columbus, Priscilla and Andrew Stim, Alpharetta, Steven Irvin, Gillsville, Jan Bryant, Gainesville, Bobby Bryant, Dahlonega, and Karen and John Nickerson, Annadale, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.

BALDWIN - Robert E. Ingram, 42, diedThursday, July 29, 1999, at his residence following a sudden illness.
Mr. Ingram was bornApril 24, 1957, in Muscogee County. He was a son of Rosie Jacobs Ingram, Newnan, and the late Robert E. Ingram.
Mr. Ingram was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed with BellSouth as a supervisor.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 31, in Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Danny O'Kelly officiating. Burial was in the New Bethel Baptist Church cemetery, Carnesville.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Cindy Pritchett Ingram; three daughters, Wendy Robinson, Virginia, Sheree Ingram, Winder, and Candace Galloway, Baldwin; one son, Robert C. Ingram, Winder; one sister, Rosie Mae Smith, Columbus; and one grandchild.

Retired poultry farmer
HOSCHTON - J.W. "Bill" Crowe, 86, diedWednesday, July 28, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Crowe was bornin Catoosa County in 1913. He was a son of the late Marcus Ellie and Nellie Crowe.
Mr. Crowe was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Jefferson, where he served as chairman of the board of deacons and taught the Men's Bible Class for more than 30 years. He was a retired poultry farmer.
Mr. Crowe was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Crowe, a daughter, Margaret C. Gann, three brothers, Wayman, J.D. and Mansul Crowe, and a grandson, Scott Crowe.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, at Faith Baptist Church with Dr. Gerald Mitton and the Rev. D.F. Williams officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Thompson Crowe; sons and daughters-in-law, William A. JEFFERSON - Mrs. Christine Wilkes Dowdy, 85, diedFriday, July 30, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following a brief illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Dowdy was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Partain Wilkes.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Jefferson. Mrs. Dowdy was also a member of the Jackson County Senior Citizens AARP, a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Jolly Agers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Boot" Dowdy.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 1, at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Revs. Hulon Hill and Jesse Mealor officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Frankie Bray, Drew Bray, Mike Dowdy, Steve Dowdy, Hal Dowdy, Ron Dowdy, Rod Dowdy, Chris Dowdy and Mark Hardigree served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Dowdy and Ronnie Dowdy, both of Jefferson, and Jerry Dowdy, Gainesville; three daughters, Martha Crawford, Mary Bray and Joy Wood, all of Jefferson; one sister, Elizabeth Elder, Conyers; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

MR. WHEELER
Farmer
BRASELTON - Loyd Robert Wheeler Sr., 67, diedSunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at Crawford Long Hospital.
Mr. Wheeler was a son of the late J.G. and Marelle H. Wheeler.
He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Wheeler was also a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Livingston Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claris B. Wheeler.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Leaptrott and Greg Judd officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Bob Wheeler, Braselton; one daughter, Teresa Wheeler, Braselton; two brothers, J.G. "Dick" Wheeler, Braselton, and James Henry Wheeler, Douglasville; and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Zion Baptist Church Building Fund.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Clara Cole, 95, diedTuesday, July 27, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Commerce, Mrs. Cole was bornJune 26, 1904. She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Haseltine Berrong Tanner.
Mrs. Cole had been employed with Blue Bell Manufacturing. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Theron Cole.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one daughter, Marguerite Chandler, Commerce; granddaughter, Louisa Chandler; grandson and wife, Mrs. and Mrs. Benny Chandler; and two great-grandchildren.

NICHOLSON - Mrs. Bonnie M. Smith Reynolds, 91, diedSunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Reynolds was bornJanuary 28, 1908. She was a daughter of the late William Tramell and Betty Venable Smith.
Mrs. Reynolds was retired from Commerce Sportswear and was of the Holiness faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Reynolds.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Daniel Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Beauchamp and Emma Beauchamp, both of Nicholson; one sister, Gladys Walker, Smyrna; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
