A native of Banks County, Mr. Free was bornNovember 28, 1930. He was a son of the late Luther and Iola Lord Free.
Mr. Free had lived in the Athens area for most of his life and was a retired carpenter. He was connected with Christian Hardware for a number of years. Mr. Free was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva E. Gearing Free, and a son, Ottis Lloyd Free.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 30, at Community Baptist Church with the Revs. David Strickland and Dub Adkins officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Gordon, Athens, Patricia Ann Booth, Ila, and Juanita Irwin, Nicholson; two sons, David Free and Terry Free, both of Athens; three sisters, Worlene Ford, Rogersville, Tenn., Kathline Strickland, Jefferson, and Martha Jane Shiver, Athens; one brother, Henry Free, Athens; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Boyce G. Herring
Mrs. Boyce G. Herring, 74, of Hull, diedSunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Herring was bornJanuary 18, 1925, the daughter of the late John and Janie Jordan Glenn.
She had been employed with Blue Bell Manufacturing as a sewing machine operator. Mrs. Herring was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Herring.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial was in Ila Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Leon Herring, Bishop; one daughter, Virginia Evelyn Rams, Hull; a niece raised in the home, Birdie Nix; two sisters, Gladys Sellers, Supply, N.C., and Lillian Dykes, Macon; five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Dr. Herman Peskin
Dr. Herman Peskin, 71, of Augusta, formerly of Commerce, diedThursday, July 15, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Peskin was a physician of internal medicine for 40 years.
As a boy, Dr. Peskin lived in Commerce during the early 1930s. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia and of the Medical College of Georgia.
Mr. Peskin was a member of the Richmond County Medical Association, the Georgia Medical Association, the 10th District Medical Association and the American Society of Internal Medicine. He was an associate member of the Fellowship of American College of Physicians, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at MCG and was active in the Crohn's-Colitis Foundation. Dr. Peskin was a member of Adas Yeshurun Synagogue, where he was a past chairman of the federation of Jewish Charities and a board member.
He was beloved by his patients, family members said. He always made time for them. He was a doting, loving father, grandfather and husband.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 16, at Westover Memorial Park, Augusta, with Rabbi Maynard Hyman officiating. Milton Ruben, Gerald Ehrlich, Daniel Kleinman, Sanford Schwartz, Bernie Silverstein, Phillip Peskin, Irvin Levy, Jim Bernstein, Harold Lefkoff and Abram Serotta served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Ruben Peskin; two sons, Steven Peskin, Princeton, N.J., and Stuart R. Peskin, Atlanta; one daughter, Julie Peskin Kleinman, Atlanta; one brother, Phillip Peskin, Atlanta; and six grandchildren.

Cleo P. Pruitt
Mrs. Cleo Pritchett Pruitt, 81, of Crestview, Fla., formerly of Jefferson, diedFriday, July 30, 1999, at West Florida Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Pruitt was bornMay 1, 1918. She was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lola Wood Pritchett.
Mrs. Pruitt was a homemaker and a member of Apple Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toy Pruitt.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Vaughn Howington Jr. officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Pruitt, Atlanta, Jerry Pruitt, Maysville, and Johnny Pruitt, Bogart; three daughters, Robbie Cartledge, Crestview, Fla., and Martha Chambers and Diane Davis, both of Jefferson; four brothers, Harold Pritchett, Cornelia, Nolan Pritchett, Maysville, Roy Pritchett, Commerce, and Swayne Pritchett, Anderson, S.C.; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Roy L. Gee
Roy Leon Gee, 67, of Commerce, diedMonday, July 19, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Commerce, Mr. Gee was bornMay 13, 1932. He was a son of the late Riley L. and Bessie Anderson Gee.
Mr. Gee worked as a bus driver for Jackson County Schools.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 21, at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Revs. Mark Poston and Tommy Seay officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Nell Gee; one son, David Gee, Commerce; three daughters, Donna Ayers, Ila, Carolyn Gee, Columbia, S.C., and Debbie Looney, Center; one brother, Ralph Gee, Braselton; one sister, Louise Norris, Dry Pond; and five grandchildren.

A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, Mrs. Smith was bornNovember 26, 1918. She was a daughter of the late William T. and Irma Lou Rowe Allen.
Mrs. Smith was retired and was a member of Hull Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Homemaker's Sunday School class. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. Smith.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 26, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. The Revs. Ronny Barnes and Mark Palmer assisted. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Derek Moore, Ben Smith, William Sorrow, Steve Allen, Thurmond Smith and Kenneth Jones served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three daughters, Paulette Moore, Hull, Sharon Langford, Pendergrass, and Susan Hancock, Bishop; one son, Terry M. Smith, Hull; two sisters, Catheline Sorrow and Marie Jenkins, both of Danielsville; three brothers, Cecil Allen, Augusta, and Neal Allen and Grady Allen, both of Danielsville; eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A native of Madison County, Mr. Scarborough was bornSeptember 30, 1910. He was a son of the late Silas Benjamin and Mae Chastain Scarborough.
Mr. Scarborough was a retired farmer and of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 26, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Lonnie Bennett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Scarborough's grandsons served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Wood Scarborough; five sons, James Scarborough, Hull, Ernest Scarborough and Johnny Scarborough, both of Comer, Kenneth Scarborough, Danielsville, and Charles Scarborough, Ila; two daughters, Louise Gueth, Comer, and Martha Adams, Danielsville; one sister, Myrtie Alewine, Crawford; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A native of Clarke County, Mr. Smith was a son of Lucille Hanley Smith and the late Joseph F. Smith.
He worked in construction and was of the Christian faith.

Troy Weyman Porterfield Sr., 86, of Colbert, diedFriday, July 23, 1999.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Porterfield was a son of the late Carl W. and Mozelle Barnette Porterfield.
He had worked with Athens Seed Company and was a member of Colbert Baptist Church. Mr. Porterfield was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Lacy.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 26, at Colbert Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Fuller officiating. Burial was in Colbert Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Troy W. Porterfield Jr., Athens; one brother, R.W. Porterfield, Athens; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A native of Madison County, Mrs. Moon was bornFebruary 27, 1930. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Dezzie Graham Coile.
Mrs. Moon was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Athens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin A. Moon.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 28, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Andy Huff officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Moon's nephews served as pallbearers.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bobby Campbell, White Plains; son and daughter-in-law, Melvin Jr. and Kathy Moon, Athens; five sisters, Grace Pierce, Sue Coile, Minnie Pierce, Bera Martin and Helen Graham, all of Comer; and four grandchildren, Nikki and Melissa Moon, both of Athens, and Chris and Jason Campbell, both of White Plains.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. West was bornOctober 31, 1950. He was a son of Raymond Eugene West, Chula Vista, Calif., and Allie Taylor West, San Diego, Calif.
Mr. West was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a truck driver and a private airplane pilot. He was a former resident of Rex, Georgia.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 16, in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Joe Renfro officiating.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one son, Glen Timothy West, Martin; two brothers, Richard West, Spring Valley, Calif., and Mike West, San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Elaine Bellamy, St. Louis, Mo., and Carolyn Horlor, Enumclaw, Wash.; and step-mother, Helen West, Chula Vista, Calif.
