JEFFERSON - Dennis Lee Edwards, 68, diedSunday, June 27, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Edwards was bornJuly 16, 1930. He was a son of the late Samuel Preston and Della Church Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War, and was retired from the poultry industry. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy Fleeman.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 29, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. Wesley Purcell, Luther Williams and Thomas Doster officiating. Burial was in the Oconee Baptist Church cemetery. James Dumas, Thomas Love, Brantley Prickett, Greg McDonald, Vince Mercardante and Danny Sudderth served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Poole Edwards; sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew and Pam Edwards and Phillip and Nan Edwards, all of Jefferson; daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Chris Lane, Jefferson, and Melinda and Joe Satterfield, Maysville; three brothers, William Edwards and James Edwards, both of Jefferson, and Doug Edwards, Spartanburg, S.C.; nine grandchildren; special nephew and niece, Johnny and Lynn Martin; and a special friend, Frances Vandiver.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Gertrude Bridges Strickland, 82, diedFriday, June 25, 1999, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Strickland was bornFebruary 13, 1917. She was a daughter of the late Clifford Lee and Ada Phelps Bridges.
Mrs. Strickland was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.F. Strickland.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 26, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Brad Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Moons Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Troy Strickland, Commerce; and two grandchildren.
MRS. CROWDER

HOMER - Mrs. Vivian Claudia Crowder, 79, diedFriday, November 3, 2000, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Crowder was bornJanuary 8, 1921, a daughter of the late Pete and Lula Coker Whitfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy B. Crowder, and a daughter, Rosemary White.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 5, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bill Ferguson and Rick Hartline officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include four sons, Andy J. White, Jacksonville, Fla., Garland White, George O. White, Amarillo, Texas, and Leon White, Homer; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

MR. BENSON

PENDERGRASS - Hall Monroe "H.M." Benson, 88, diedSunday, November 5, 2000, at Pine Oak Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Hall was bornApril 20, 1912, in Forsyth County. He was a son of the late Hall Monroe Benson Sr. and Mary Robbs Benson.
Mr. Benson was a graduate of Martin Institute, Jefferson, and was a retired driver for Uniform Co. He was a member of Talmo First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Mr. Benson was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Czaplinski, and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 8, at Talmo First Baptist Church with the Revs. H.F. Woodyard, Charles Jenkins, Paul Wade and Jeff Burt officiating. Burial was in the Pendergrass Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Grace Elrod Benson; adopted daughters, Amy Woodyard Cornett, Suwanee, and Elaine Pearson Czaplinski; three sisters, Nora Crowe, San Antonio, Texas, Orene Evans, Talmo, and Billie Benson, Commerce; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Talmo First Baptist Church.

Ms. Burghoff was bornJanuary 22, 1972, a daughter of Lila (Couch) Couch, Homer, and the late William Douglas Gray.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 8, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. James Dumas officiating. Burial was in Banks County Memorial Gardens.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include two sons, Douglas Axl Gray and Victor George Gray, both of Homer; two brothers, Kimsey Lamar Gray, Jefferson, William Richard Gray, Carnesville; and two sisters, Connie Denise Fountain, Homer, and Kathy Ann McIntyre, Toccoa.

Mrs. Bridges was bornMay 2, 1929, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Morris J. and Olia Brock Wilbanks.
Mrs. Bridges was a homemaker and was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 6, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Larry Joe Wilbanks, Terry James and Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Bridges is survived by her husband, Julian C. Bridges; one son, Mark Bridges, Ellijay; two daughters, Nancy Bridges, Commerce, and Karen Simmons, Hartwell; one brother, Silas M. Wilbanks, Commerce; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Thomas was bornApril 1, 1916, in Banks County, a daughter of the late William Morgan and Ellie Duncan Purcell.
She was a member of Hudson River Baptist Church. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Hoke Thomas.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 7, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Troy Herbert, Henry Webb and Ronnie Moon officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by two sons, Billy Dean Thomas, Gainesville, and Joe Thomas, Commerce; two daughters, Lois Bridges and Mary Fricks, both of Commerce; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Robert Clay and Mary Emma Stapleton Freeny.
She was a retired nurse and a member of Atlanta Road Church of Christ in Gainesville. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis D. Smith.
Funeral services were held Thursday, November 2, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Jeremy Houck officiating. Burial was Sunday, November 5, in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Caddo, Okla.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Martha Smith, Miami, Okla.; daughter, Barbara Brumback, Winder; two sisters, Mary Peters, Caddo, Okla., and Bettye Lester, Durant, Okla.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

CORNELIA - Henley Kimbrell, 71, diedThursday, November 2, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Kimbrell was bornMay 6, 1929, in Stephens County, a son of the late Messer and Lucy Gully Kimbrell.
He was a U.S. veteran, having served during the Korean War Conflict and was a retired mechanic from Ethicon. Mr. Kimbrell was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Fay Ward and Bernice Little.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 4, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Garrison officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Kimbrell is survived by his wife, Imogene London Kimbrell; one daughter, Sharon Kimbrell Segers, Cornelia; three sons, Johnny Kimbrell, Baldwin, and Donny Kimbrell and Kenneth Kimbrell, both of Cornelia; three brothers, Ray Kimbrell, Demorest, Denver Kimbrell, Alto, and Donald Kimbrell, Mt. Airy; one sister, Dorothy Aiken, Cornelia; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

COMMERCE - William H. Ray, 81, diedThursday, November 2, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Ray was bornMarch 14, 1919, in Commerce. He was a son of the late Henry Grady and Ellis Sellers Ray.
Mr. Ray was a funeral director and was a member and past master of the Hudson Masonic Lodge Number 294 in Commerce, where he had served as director of work of the lodge. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason and was district deputy to the Grand Master of the Ninth Masonic District, State of Georgia. Mr. Ray was also a Shriner.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 4, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Lloyd Ray, Dallas; two daughters, Cynthia Ann Adams and Vivian Williams, both of Toccoa; two sisters, Emma Virginia Lankford, Douglasville, and Catherine Price, Commerce; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
