MRS. MARTIN
U.S. Gov. Civil Service retiree
ATHENS - Mrs. Sarah Davidson Martin, 75, diedFriday, November 12, 1999, at a local hospital.
Mrs. Martin was bornAugust 31, 1924, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late William Minor and Sibyl Prickett Davidson.
Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Martin Institute, Jefferson, and a graduate of Athens Business College. She was retired from the U.S. Government Civil Service, with 32 years of service.
Mrs. Martin was a longtime resident of Athens and a longtime member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Garden Club, NARF, a charter member and past president of the Secretaries Club and an honorary member of the Elks Club in Athens.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, William Luther Martin.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 15, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Michael Marsingill and Dayton Logan officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Ed Conley, Mark Watson, Jamie Jarrard, Stanley Watson, Troy Davidson and Wayne Martin served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three sisters, Margaret Brown, Gainesville, Bertie May Watson, Danielsville, and Allie Dishman, Daytona Beach Shores, Fla.; two brothers, Bronson L. Davidson, Gainesville, and Gene Davidson, Maysville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. ARMSTRONG
Father of countian
DAHLONEGA - William "Bill" Armstrong, 60, diedSaturday, November 13, 1999, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. Armstrong was bornin Bibb County, but had lived in Hall County for a number of years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was employed with Hidden Lake Academy. Mr. Armstrong had also worked with Northeast Georgia Medical Center Security Service for many years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 16, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Revs. Grady Hester and Doug Collins officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Danny Jackson and Joan and Ronnie Vaughn, all of Dahlonega; sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Scott, Homer, and Mrs. and Mrs. Wayne Scott, Dahlonega; son, Christopher Armstrong, Maryland; sister-in-law, Mary Abernathy, Jasper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Myrtle Whitt, Cumming, Tom and Martha Batchlor, Canton, and Gerald and Janie McGinnis, Alpharetta; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Park Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. POOLE
Retired manager
COMMERCE - Mrs. Ida Mae Massey Poole, 81, a resident of BJC Nursing Home, diedThursday, November 4, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Poole was bornAugust 13, 1918. She was a daughter of the late Lon and Camilla Brown Massey.
Mrs. Poole was a retired manager of McConnell Five and Dime Store and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Fletcher Poole.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 6, at Webbs Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Hill and Ralph Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Gene Poole, Griffin; two daughters, Barbara Jones, Lula, and Carolyn Wilson, Commerce; two sisters, Mary Evelyn Aycock and Ruth Cartey, both of Athens; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. STEPHENS
Actress, pianist
COMMERCE - Mrs. Clara M. Stephens diedMonday, November 1, 1999.
Mrs. Stephens was bornMay 3, 1925, in Witchatal Falls, Texas. She was a resident of Banks County for 2 1/2 years.
Mrs. Stephens was a gifted actress of the Cabaret Theater, Atlanta, as well as an accomplished pianist and artist and craft person.
Mrs. Stephens' cremated remains will be transported and interred beside her husband, the late Marvin Stephens, in Alabama.
The National Cremation Society, Lilburn, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. CRANE
Former POW
MAYSVILLE - Sidney Boyd Crane, 76, diedSunday, November 7, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Crane was a son of the late George and Dessie Morris Crane. He was retired from the trucking industry.
Mr. Crane was drafted in November 1943. After being inducted at Fort McPherson, he spent seven months in Camp Shelby, Miss., then boarded a ship in New York, landing in Naples, Italy, entering combat on the front line. Mr. Crane was captured in Germany while in battle on the Rhine River and spent 14 days as a Prisoner of War before escaping. He was sent to a field hospital and was treated for frostbite and malnutrition, and after a month's time, was sent back to the front line.
Mr. Crane's unit fought through France, Germany and Belgium and were in Vienna, Austria, when they received word that the war had ended.
Mr. Crane stayed on the front line during five major battles, had been captured and escaped, earning two Silver Stars and two Bronze Stars during his 2 1/2 years of duty.
Mr. Crane was preceded in death by a son, Philip Crane.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 9, at Grove Level Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Cotton Crane; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and James Cantrell, Gainesville, Nancy and Larry Williams, Maysville, Cathy and Tony Dubnik, Talmo, and Lisa and Danny Sims, Lula; one sister, Nell Cagle, Maysville; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

CHANDLER
Infant
NICHOLSON - Charieynna J. Chandler, infant daughter of Jeffery and Catherine Moore Chandler, Nicholson, diedSaturday, November 6, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Infant Chandler was preceded in death by a grandfather, Douglas Chandler, and a great-great-grandfather, James Sewell.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 9, at New Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Barnett officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one sister, Jhalexius T. Chandler, Nicholson; one brother, Jeffery Alexander Chandler, Nicholson; grandparents, Edith Chandler, Monroe, Patrice Teasley, Nicholson, and Robert Moore, Athens; great-grandparents, J.T. and Lila Mackey and Bobby and Mattie Watson, all of Jefferson; and a great-great-grandmother, Catherine Sewell, Nicholson.
Forestglen Mortuary, Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. SPINKS
Housewife
WINDER - Mrs. Kate Crowe Spinks, 83, mother of Nancy Anglin, Jefferson, diedSaturday, November 6, 1999.
Mrs. Spinks was bornin Walton County, a daughter of the late Doc and Ruth Austin Page.
She had resided in Barrow County for most of her life and was a housewife and a member of the Winder Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Spinks was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Crowe and her second husband, George Spinks.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 9, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. G.H. Hammond and Hugh Crowe officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include three sons, Donald Crowe, Conyers, the Rev. Hugh Crowe, Helena, and James Crowe, Bethlehem; daughter, Carolyn Roberts, Winder; one sister, Marie Harrison, Winder; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. BALES
Retired antique dealer
HULL - Bobby Bales Sr., 63, diedWednesday, November 3, 1999, at a local hospital.
Mr. Bales was bornDecember 5, 1935, in Jackson County, but lived most of his life in Madison County. He was a son of the late Ellis and Lula Dellinger Bales.
Mr. Bales owned and operated his own antique business and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Archer Bales, Danielsville; two daughters, Elaine Sorrow, Ila, and Marie Sorrow, Danielsville; three sons, Tony Bales, Hull, Bobby Bales Jr., Brunswick, and Donald Lee Bales, Toccoa; four sisters, Lena Cowart and Annie Mae Smith, both of Hull, and Shirley Cowart and Frances Monroe, both of Athens; and one brother, Ralph Bales, Athens.
Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MILLER
Former Marine
Corps sergeant
LANDOVER, MD. - Mrs. Guynelle Cochran Miller, 66 diedTuesday, October 26, 1999, at Joseph Richie Hospital, Baltimore, Md., of cancer.
Mrs. Miller was bornin Banks County, a daughter of the late Henly and Su Cochran.
She was a graduate of Commerce High School and served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Mrs. Miller was awarded the Korean War Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal. Following her military service, she worked for the federal government as a contract specialist. Mrs. Miller was a member of the First Christian Church of Brock Hall, Upper Marlboro, Md. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Merle Cochran St. John, formerly of Erie, Pa., and Lucille Cochran Farmer, formerly of Ohio.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 28, at the First Christian Church of Brock Hall. Burial was in Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Ray Miller, whom she marriedin 1954; one son, Michael Ray Miller, Lothian, Md.; one daughter, Deborah Lynn Rourke, Butler, Pa.: one sister, Maxine Smith, Commerce; and four grandchildren.

MR. FIELDS
Jackson County native
HULL - Lonnie G. Fields, 76, diedWednesday, November 3, 1999.
Mr. Fields was bornin Jackson County, a son of the late Lonnie G. and Ella Plott Fields.
He worked as a brick mason and carpenter and was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 5, at New Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Dillard Sr. officiating. Burial was in the Gordon's Chapel Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Lorine H. Fields; one son, Michael G. Fields, Tennessee; two daughters, Virginia Brown, Alabaster, Ala., and Linda Taylor, Hull; three step-sons, Ralph Gooch, Hartwell, Calvin Gooch, Watkinsville, and Marvin Gooch, Athens; two step-daughters, Pat Bright, Orange Park, Fla., and Linda Bright, Athens; nine grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, was in charge of arrangements.
