ATHENS - Mrs. Maggie Logan Archer, 94, diedSunday, July 4, 1999, at a local hospital.
A native of Union County, Mrs. Archer was bornMarch 29, 1905. She was a daughter of the late Henry O. and Laura Minnie Parham Logan.
Mrs. Archer had lived in the Athens area for the past 50 years. She was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years. Mrs. Archer was preceded in death by her husband, Willie J. Archer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in the Attica Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Nedra M. Archer, Mauldin, S.C., and Billie A. Jacobs, Belleville, Ill.; one sister, Lona L. Clotfelter, Athens; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

ATHENS - Mrs. Martha Page Morton Hunter, sister of Malcolm O. Morton, Jefferson, diedSunday, July 4, 1999.
A native of Jones County, Mrs. Hunter was a daughter of the late James Everett and Clyde B. Morton.
She was a graduate of Gray High School, Mercer University, with an A.B. Degree, and Emory University, with an A.B. Degree in Library Science. Mrs. Hunter taught school at Pelham and Moultrie and had library duties with the Fulton County Library System.
During World War II, she had library positions with the 3rd Army and the 3rd Air Force, and ended her library career with the military as Chief Librarian for the Tactical Air Force. Mrs. Hunter also had library duties with the Business and Professional Women's Organiza-tion in Washington, D.C. and served as Library Specialist with Athens Regional Library.
She did volunteer work for Emmanuel Episcopal Church and for St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Riesbol, and was the widow of Thomas Mitchell Hunter.
Together, the Hunters had a great love for Clemson University. Evidence of this love includes The Hunter Endowed Chair of Bioengineering, The Hunter Honors Lecture Series and The Page Morton Hunter Engineering Fellowship. In 1992, Mrs. Hunter received The President's Award of Clemson University.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Revs. Eddie Ard and Mandy Brady officiating. Burial was in High View Cemetery, Gray.
Survivors, in addition to her brother, include sisters-in-law, Lucille Morton, Augusta, and Jeanette Morton Barnes, Greensboro, N.C.; nieces, Jeanee Dicasali, Sandre Gamble, Cathy Morton, Ann Morton, Alice Bryan, Page Morton and Jenny Morton; and nephews, Bill Morton, Walter Morton and Jim Morton.

MAYSVILLE - James Cecil Hyde, 59, diedWednesday, August 23, 2000, at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Mr. Hyde was bornDecember 17, 1940, in Wallace, W.Va. He was a son of the late Roy and Minnie Steir Hyde.
Mr. Hyde was employed as an electrician. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Curtis Hyde.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 26, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Minister Jeff Coalson officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Hyde is survived by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Hyde; three sons, David R. Hyde, Fayetteville, Michael L. Hyde, Locust Grove, and Patrick J. Hyde, Commerce; two daughters, Mary Jo Moore, Sardis, W.Va., and Linda M. Waldrop, Ila; three brothers, David Hyde, Tallahassee, Fla., Robert Hyde, Houston, Texas, and Roger Hyde, Tempe, Ariz.; two sisters, Marilyn Murdock, Tulsa, Okla., and Mary Orme, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and 12 grandchildren.

JEFFERSON - Carl Clay Hill, 88, diedThursday, August 24, 2000.
Mr. Hill was a native of Forsyth County. He was retired from General Motors and was a member of Piedmont United Methodist Church.
Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Dean Hill, and a grandson, Charles Clay Hill.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 26, in the chapel of Tapp Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. Gaylon Beard officiating. Graveside services were held Sunday, August 27, in the Level Creek United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Hill is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Fray Ned and Marilyn Hill, Elberton, and the Rev. Hulon and Sara Hill, Jefferson; one sister, Geneva Mae Hill, Maysville; sister-in-law, Clara Mae Hill, Suwanee; two grandchildren, Brenda Christopher and Tim Hill; and two great-grandchildren, Misty Christopher and Amber Hill.

MAYSVILLE - David Calvin Hill Sr., 86, diedThursday, August 24, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Hill was bornJuly 24, 1914, in Cherokee County, a son of the late William Lewis and Mary Maggie Vaughn Hill.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a former shop superintendent. Mr. Hill was a member of Homer Baptist Church and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Bessie Sams Hill.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 26, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Gene Todd officiating. Burial was in the David C. Hill Family Cemetery, Maysville.
Survivors include four sons, David Calvin Hill Jr. and Thomas W. Hill, both of Maysville, and Don E. Hill and Orion C. Hill, both of Covington; three daughters, Jeanie Gordon, Reynolds, and Judy Redmond and Linda Scoggins, both of Maysville; one brother, Norman Jack Hill, Ellijay; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A native of Fulton County, Mr. Wheeler was a son of Jimmy and Pat Riley, Lawrenceville.
He was employed as a commercial industrial electrician and was a member of St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church. Mr. Wheeler was also a member of Union I.B.E.W. Local #613.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 26, in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Father Joseph Samaan officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Stockbridge.

CORNELIA - J.W. Beck, 68, diedSaturday, August 26, 2000, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Jackson County, Mr. Beck had lived most of his life in Habersham County. He was a son of the late Lattie and Clara Watts Beck.
Mr. Beck was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He had worked as an insulator in the Atlanta and surrounding areas and was of the Baptist denomination. Mr. Beck was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #7720.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 28, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Rev. Roy Lee Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the V.F.W. Memorial Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter #15.
Mr. Beck is survived by his wife, Claudia McConnell Beck; one son, Dion Beck, Cornelia; two sisters, Lucille Lee, Cornelia, and Edith Pitts, Annapolis, Md.; and one grandchild.

WINDER - Miss Edna K. Wall, 83, diedWednesday, August 23, 2000.
Miss Wall was bornin Jackson County, a daughter of the late Emmett and Maybelle Miller Wall.
She had resided in Barrow County for most of her life and was retired from the cafeteria at Winder-Barrow High School. Miss Wall was a member of Chapel Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Adell Austin, in 1998.
Graveside services were held Friday, August 25, in Barrow Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Stephens officiating.
Miss Wall is survived by a number of cousins.
