William Smith
William Allen Smith, 76, of Canon, diedMonday, January 27, 2003, at the Georgia War Veteran’s Home in Milledgeville.
Mr. Smith was bornin Madison County on June 29, 1926. He was a son of the late Plumer and Ida Elliott Smith.
Mr. Smith was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and worked for Huff Bakery for 24 years as a supervisor. He was a member of Mill Shoal Baptist Church, the Harrison McCreary V.F.W. Post 4828 and the Royston Masonic Lodge #52.
A private family service was held.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra Moody, Seneca, S.C., and Sharon Fillingame, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Azalee Duncan, Royston, and Glenney Burden, Elberton; one brother, Elmer (Carl) Smith, Canon; and two granddaughters.

Franklin E. Crumley
Franklin Edward Crumley, 62, of Daniels-ville, diedThursday, April 3, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center of an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Crumley was a son of the late Walker and Ida Brown Crumley.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Crumley is survived by his wife, Ester Crumley, of the home; three sons, Eddie Crumley, Ted Crumley and Chad Crumley, all of Danielsville; three brothers, William Crumley and Bobby Crumley, both of Commerce, and Dickie Crumley, Danielsville; four sisters, Deanie Sears, Ada Hammond and Loretta Barnes, all of Commerce, and Brenda Smith, Danielsville; and eight grandchildren.

Kathleen H. Vaughn
Mrs. Kathleen Hix Vaughn, 84, of Commerce, diedTuesday, April 8, 2003, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Vaughn was bornApril 14, 1918, in Jackson County, a daughter of the late C.L. and Roxie Reed Hix.
She retired from Commerce Manufacturing and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Vaughn Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the First Baptist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Kent Cranford and Jessie Mealor officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Millie Vaughn, Commerce; granddaughter, Lisa Vaughn, Commerce; brother, Wayne Hix, Danielsville; and sisters, Sara Dell Hix and Agnes Whitlock, both of Commerce.

Jean Dixon
Mrs. Lallie Jean Berrong Dixon, 69, of Danielsville, diedThursday, April 3, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Dixon was bornin Jackson County on November 9, 1933, a daughter of the late W.N. and Ida Bell Phillips Berrong.
She was employed in the textile industry and was a member of Meadow Baptist Church. Mrs. Dixon was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Herring.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Calvin Coile officiating. Burial was in the Colbert City Cemetery.
Mrs. Dixon is survived by her husband, Doris Dixon, Danielsville; daughter, Sherry Jackson, Danielsville; and granddaughter, Tammy Jackson, Danielsville.

Joseph L. Fields
Joseph Lewis Fields, 61, of Nicholson, diedTuesday, April 1, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born April 18, 1941, in Jackson County, Mr. Fields was a son of the late Sylvester B. Fields and Evie Doretta Taylor Kesler.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed as a tower operator for Westinghouse Co. in Athens. Mr. Fields was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Fields.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Curtis Hammond officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Danny Akers, David Akers, Woody Brown, Benji Fields, Chuck Roberts and Dennis Roberts served as pallbearers.
Mr. Fields is survived by his wife, Sara Frances Fields, Nicholson; daughters, Lynn Norman, Hull, Sissy Richardson, Westminster, S.C., Lisa Gillespie, Commerce, Jolene Peters, Athens, Amanda Reed, Jefferson, and Lisa Cash and Sandy Norris, both of Nicholson; brothers, Charles Fields, Nicholson, and Wayne Fields, Lexington; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Johnnie Denise Jones Collins, 45, of Commerce, diedTuesday, April 8, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens.
Born February 26, 1958, in Hall County, Mrs. Collins was a daughter of the late Talmadge Eugene and Winnie Blanch Smallwood Jones.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Burial will be in the Springway Baptist Church Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mrs. Collins is survived by her husband, Johnny “Cooter” Collins, Commerce; one brother, Travis Jones, Maysville; and three sisters, Janice Bost and Judy McCannon, both of Pendergrass, and Ruthie Kitchens, Comer.

Viola Cress
Mrs. Verner Viola Bray Cress, 89, of Carnesville, diedTuesday, April 8, 2003, at Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston.
Mrs. Cress was bornin Franklin County on October 7, 1913, a daughter of the late James Clifford and Grace Bond Bray.
She was a seamstress and a member of Zidon Baptist Church. Mrs. Cress was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Melvin Cress, and two sisters, Dartha “Dot” Jackson and Elsie Cook.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Zidon Baptist Church with the Revs. Stanley Bray, Paul Collins and Vernon Dorminey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, James Cress, Jerry Cress and Joe Cress, all of Carnesville; two brothers, James Seldon Bray, Royston, and J.C. Bray, Anderson, S.C.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Brandon E. Moore
Brandon E. Moore, 20, of Clarkesville, diedWednesday, April 2, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Moore was bornFebruary 7, 1983, in Clarke County. He was a 2001 graduate of Habersham Central High School and was currently a sophomore at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega. Mr. Moore was a part-time employee of Belk Department Store in Cornelia and was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Hilda Rousey, and grandmother, Rebecca Moore.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Clarkesville Baptist Church with the Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bowman.
Mr. Moore is survived by his mother, Sharon L. Moore, Clarkesville; his father and step-mother, Russell A. and Sherry Moore, Bowman; and grandfather, Robert S. Moore, Elberton.

Mr. Murdock was bornApril 25, 1908, in Monahan County, Texas, the son of the late Sidney Estes and Nettie Gertrude Murdock.
He was a retired grocery man and a member of City View Baptist Church.

Leonard Smith
Leonard Smith, 91, of Danielsville, diedMonday, April 7, 2003.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late John and Callic McLeroy Smith.
He retired after 35 years with Harmony Grove Mills in Commerce, and was a member and deacon emeritus of Friendship Baptist Church.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Ophelia McCarty Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Dayton Logan and Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ray Brooks, Larry Smith, Maurice Wardlaw, Johnny Bryant, Clayton Bryant and Robert Holcomb will serve as pallbearers.
