Mrs. Marie Esco, 70, of Winder, died Friday, November 2, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Esco was a daughter of the late Henry R. Smith and the late Etta Bell Adams.
She was retired and attended the Church at Winder. Mrs. Esco was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Esco.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 5, in the chapel of Wise-Connolly Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Pennington officiating. Burial was in the Hoschton Cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Smith, Vickie L. Hunt and Nina K. Allen, all of Winder; four sons, Bobby E. Esco, Tony L. Esco, Jimmy R. Esco and Timothy K. Esco, all of Winder; four sisters, Vera Duvall and Dale Sauls, both of Winder, Virginia Stewart, Braselton, and Mildred Smith, Auburn; three brothers, Steve Smith and Mike Smith, both of Winder, and Raymond Smith, Monroe; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Marcella Bowers, 87, of Winder, died Monday, November 5, 2001.
Arrangements will be announced by Carter Funeral Home, Winder.
Montene H. Watkins
Mrs. Montene Hendrix Watkins, 93, of Madison, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Watkins was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Nora Whetzel Hendrix.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her husband, Olin H. Watkins, and a son, Lyndon Watkins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8, at Beacon Heights Baptist Church with the Revs. Donald Berry and Jim Ross officiating. Burial will be in Baywood Gardens. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Survivors include two daughters, Latrelle Stapp and Regina Broach, both of Madison; one son, Glenn Watkins, Madison; four sisters, Estell Wood, Dallas, and Hassieleen Ward, Gertrude Thurmond and Lena Moss, all of Madison; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Simmons Funeral Home.

McDonald Washington Sr.
McDonald Washington Sr., 72, of Athens, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Washington was a son of the late John and Alice Smith Washington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Washington, and a son, McDonald Washington Jr.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 5, at New Grove Baptist Church, Jackson County, with the Rev. Larry Norman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three sisters, Orena Griffieth and Margie Washington, both of Athens, and Katie A. Lester, Atlanta; three brothers, Marvin Washington, Athens, Isaiah Washington, Jefferson, and George Washington, Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Girlie G. Watkins
Mrs. Girlie G. Watkins, 85, of Winder, died Monday, November 5, 2001.
Mrs. Watkins was born in Barrow County, where she had resided for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Tom and Mae McDaniel Griffith.
Mrs. Watkins was a retiree of Barrow Manufacturing Company and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, D.J. Crowe, and her second husband, Steed Watkins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Greg Moore and Shane Crowe officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include one daughter, Imogene Garrett, Hiawassee; one son, Bo Crowe, Winder; one sister, Callie Borders, Gillsville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Melba J. Bell
Mrs. Melba Jean Bell, 71, of Commerce, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Heard County, Mrs. Bell was born December 14, 1929, a daughter of the late Ambrose and Lizzie Mooty Purgason.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Bell.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 6, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Stacy Phillips and Mike Martin officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Terry W. Bell, McDonough; one daughter, Susan Elane Bell Howard, Douglasville; two sisters, Mary P. Maratin, Augusta, and Helen Sims, Fayetteville; and five grandchildren.

Louise P. Boswell
Mrs. Louise P. Boswell, 71, Commerce, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001.
Mrs. Boswell was born in LaFrance, S.C., a daughter of the late Clifford and Quida Ramsey Pitts.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. Mrs. Boswell was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Jewell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 10, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Boswell is survived by her husband, George Boswell, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Cameron and Kelley Boswell, Commerce; one daughter and son-in-law, Candice B. and Shannon Hoxit, Danielsville; one sister, Caroldine DeLoach, Riverdale; three grandchildren, Sheila Cassidy and Madison and Montana Hoxit, Danielsville; a niece, Terrie Lynn Wood; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Leila M. Carithers
Mrs. Leila Mae Carithers, 71, of Commerce, died Friday, November 2, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Carithers was born September 18, 1930, in Ocilla, Irwin County. She was the daughter of the late Gus Wright Gratham and Vera Wylene Parker.
Mrs. Carithers was a graduate of Berry College, Norman Park, earning a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She was a retired teacher. Mrs. Carithers was a member of Erastus Christian Church, Commerce, a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a member of the North Georgia Family Campers.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at Erastus Christian Church with the Revs. Jim Lugo and Carl Beckham officiating. Burial was in the Carithers Family Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Carithers is survived by her husband, Hix Carithers, Commerce; one daughter, Cathy McDaniel, Commerce; one brother, William Gratham, Virginia; and one grandson, Anthony Licata.

Mrs. Mary Shubert, 78, of Commerce, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, at her residence.
Born May 14, 1923, in Habersham County, Mrs. Shubert was a daughter of the late Thad and Maggie Jones Brown.
She was of the Baptist denomination.
Mrs. Shubert was preceded in death by her husband, Garlin Shubert.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 3, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Troy Herbert and R.M. Lacey officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.

Myrtle Nix
Mrs. Myrtle Nix, 67, of Jefferson, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Nix was born April 8, 1934, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Charlie W. and Lillie Mae Barrett Nix.
Mrs. Nix was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by a son, Royce Allen Drake, a sister, Nan Lou Duncan, and two brothers, Ronald Nix and Hubert Nix.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 8, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Roy Smith officiating. Burial was in the Lebanon Church cemetery.
Survivors include daughters, Laurie McKinney, Arnoldsville, and Vickie Phillips, Kingsman, Ariz.; sisters, Dorothy Doster, Mayrelle Duke and Annie Grace Phillips, all of Jefferson, Dean Fordham, Athens, and Pansy Ward, Porterdale; brothers, Billy Nix, Carnesville, and Donald Nix, Decatur; and grandchildren, Amber Drake, Jonathan Wright and Ray and Samantha McKinney.

Hubert Gray
Hubert Gray, 81, of Mays-ville, died Mon-day, December 10, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. Gray was born June 22, 1920, a son of the late Joseph and Bessie Lindsey Gray.
He was a retired foreman with Batson-Cook Construction Co. and worked part-time as a security officer at Roper Pump Co., Commerce, up to one year ago.
“Hubert never knew a stranger,” said family. “He always talked to people, and he said Roper Pump employees were some of his best friends.”
Mr. Gray was preceded in death by his wife, Zelma Bowers Gray, and a son, Benny B. Gray.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, at Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce, with the Rev. Harold Crawford officiating.
Survivors include four sons, Jack Gray, Indiana, Don Welch, Tennessee, and Carl Gray and James E. Gray, both of Georgia; two daughters, Dee Jump, Tennessee, and Sue Sampson, Indiana; three sisters, Tip Arp, Zonie Miller and Nell Miller, all of Tennessee; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
