Vera B. Haynie
Mrs. Vera Brooks Haynie, 54, of Flowery Branch, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Haynie was born January 1, 1948, in Hall County, a daughter of the late Ramey and Cleo Bryson Brooks.
She was a former LPN at Northeast Georgia Medical Center for 17 years. Mrs. Haynie was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, but was attending Heavens View Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 29, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Revs. Roy Bailey and Keith Truelove officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mrs. Haynie is survived by her husband, Jerry Haynie, Flowery Branch; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Alan and Lisa Haynie, Flowery Branch; step-daughter, Jessica Haynie, Hoschton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Gaye and J.W. Beck and Faye and Douglas Reed, all of Oakwood; half-sister, Tressa Gant, Riverdale; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dianne Bishop
Mrs. Dianne Bishop, 51, of Hull, died Saturday, November 30, 2002.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Bishop was a daughter of Vera Lorine Bishop and William Franklin Walls, Hull.
She was a sixth grade school teacher at Madison County Middle School, where she had been employed for 13 years. Mrs. Bishop was a member of Bethel Holiness Church, Ila.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 2, at Bethel Holiness Church with the Revs. David Taylor and Curtis Bishop officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Chris Beussee, Harrison Gresham, Lamar Bond, Tracy Gipson, Mark Gipson, Trent Holman, Rodney Baker and Greg King served as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Wayne Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Adam Wayne and Rebecca Bishop, Kellyville, Okla.; sisters, Helen Bond, Ila, Joyce Huff, Hull, Barbara Gipson, Carnesville, and Deborah Riddleberger, Mansfield; brothers, David Walls and Eugene Walls, both of Hull; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

John P. Hulsey Jr.
John Paul Hulsey Jr., 76, of Braselton, died Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Mr. Hulsey was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company and was a member of New Liberty United Methodist Church.
He was a son of the late John Paul Hulsey Sr. and Dora Lea Cronic Hulsey.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, at New Liberty United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jamey Pritchett and James Mills officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hulsey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marjorie T. Hulsey, Braselton; daughter, Connie Lea Wilbanks, Braselton; sons, John P. Hulsey III and Jerry Hulsey, both of Braselton, and Jeffery L. Hulsey, Buford; sisters, Jessie Lois Thompson, Mt. Holly, N.C., and Ivy Jones, Forest City, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

Patricia F. Sweat
Mrs. Patricia Foley Sweat, 70, of Com-merce, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at her residence of an extended illness.
A native of Massachusetts, Mrs. Sweat had lived in Duval County, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Rose Small Foley and the widow of O.W. Sweat.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 7, at Rivermeade Hardedge-Giddens Chapel, Orange Park, Fla. Burial will be in Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
Survivors include four sons, Jerry Van Orman, Spokane, Wash., Rob Smith, Apple Valley, Calif., Ron Smith, Pine Bluff, N.C., and Steve Griffeth, Hutchinson, Kan.; two daughters, Anne Williams, Orlando, Fla., and Arae Lyn Summersill, Commerce; three brothers, Billy Foley, Melbourne, Fla., Jim Foley, Manchester, N.H., and John Foley, Coco, Fla.; one sister, Phyllis Shaughnessy, Coco, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce.

Curtis N. ‘Curt’ Stephens
Curtis N. “Curt” Stephens, 83, of Pendergrass, died Saturday, November 30, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness.
Born in Jackson County, Mr. Stephens was a son of the late John and Nancy Stephens.
He was a retired farmer and was a member of Walnut Fork Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 2, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Kenneth Brewer officiating. Burial was in the Walnut Fork Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Mollie McNeal Stephens, Augusta; one son, Donnie Stephens, Athens; one daughter, Carolyn Benton, Thomson; one brother, J.C. Stephens, Gainesville; and one grandchild, Brandi Nicole Benton, Thomson.

Andrew Thomas
Andrew Thomas, 88, of Auburn, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002.
Mr. Thomas was born March 21, 1914, in Murray County, the son of the late Ira Stanford and Nora Leatherwood Thomas.
He resided in Barrow County for the past 30 years and was a retired residential carpenter. Mr. Thomas was a member of Long Swamp Baptist Church, Jasper.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Shuford Jones officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Cora Jones Thomas, Auburn; two daughters, Nora Lee Riggs, Homer, and Patsy Still, Auburn; four sons, Bud Thomas, Hoschton, Jerry Thomas, Canton, Donald Thomas, Auburn, and Rick Thomas, Bold Springs; one sister, Mary Trusty, Covington; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Vera E. Wheeler
Miss Vera Emiline Wheeler, 87, of Commerce, died Friday, November 29, 2002, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce, of an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Miss Wheeler was the daughter of the late Charlie A. and Bertha Purcell Wheeler.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 1, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Robert Flipo, Terry Ault and Eric Hahn officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include three sisters, Hazel Clark, Culpepper, Va., Jetteree Hull, Spencerville, Ind., and Gwynola Smitherman, Athens.

William ‘Bill’ Abbs
William “Bill” Abbs, 39, of Rincon, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Screven County Hospital following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
The North Carolina native was a member of Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church. He was employed with Lufkin Industries and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 1, at Middle River Baptist Church, Carnesville. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Abbs, Rincon; four children, Alan Abbs and Tonya Abbs, Carnesville, and Danielle Abbs and Aaron Abbs, Rincon; mother and step-father, Mary and Terry Minesal, Commerce; father and step-mother, William E. and Linda Abbs, Carnesville; three brothers, Bob Abbs and Scott Abbs, Carnesville, and Wayne Abbs, Commerce; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Kenneth R. Nicholson
Kenneth Ray Nicholson, 53, of Commerce, died Friday, November 29, 2002, at Emory University Hospital.
Mr. Nicholson was born June 4, 1949, in Oconee County, S.C., a son of the late Leroy and Emma Rakin Nicholson.
He was a member of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 2, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. David Strickland officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Nicholson is survived by his wife, Evelyn Nations Nicholson, Commerce; four sons, Dale Leroy, Doug Leroy and Jeffrey Leroy, all of Commerce, and Joe Leroy, Carnesville; one daughter, Debbie Nations, Commerce; one brother, Wayne Nicholson, South Carolina; one sister, Sandra Tench, South Carolina; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

I.J. Medders
I.J. Medders, 90, of Sylvester, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, at Palmyra Medical Centers.
Mr. Medders was born March 30, 1912, in Worth County, the son of the late Chester Marion and Myrtie Kizzie Reynolds Medders.
He lived in Worth County all of his life and was a retired farmer. Mr. Medders was also a retired surveyor of Worth County, with 22 years of service. During World War II, he served as supervisor of the Sweet Potato Dehydration Plant. He was the first in Worth County to receive the FFA American Farmer Degree in 1936.
Mr. Medders was a member and former chairman of deacons at Antioch Baptist Church, where he also served as former church treasurer and Sunday School teacher.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Llewellynn Medders.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Revs. Bruce Gordon and Jerry Cooper officiating. Burial was in Providence Cemetery. Brent Medders, Jeff H. Jones, Richie Duncan, Hugh Medders, Mike Garvey, Lee Medders and Tommy Lance served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Antioch Baptist Church.
Mr. Medders is survived by his wife, Gracie McCrary Medders, Sylvester; son, Byron Medders, Maysville; sons and daughters-in-law, Harlan and Pat Medders, Doyle and Joyce Medders and Roger and Billie Medders, all of Sylvester; sister, Vesta Mae Calhoun, Sylvester; nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Medders would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on December 10.
