Horace J. Jackson
Horace J. Jackson, 68, of Jefferson, former owner of Jackson Funeral Home for 33 years, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Jackson was born November 15, 1934, in Jackson County, a son of the late Claude I. and Allene Crowe Jackson.
He was a graduate of John A. Gupton Mortuary College, Nashville, Tenn., and was a licensed funeral director for 42 years. Mr. Jackson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, where he served as a former deacon and on numerous committees. He was a former board member of the Jefferson City School Board of Education for over 12 years, where he served as treasurer, and was instrumental in the building of the Jefferson High School baseball field, which was dedicated in his honor in 1997.
Mr. Jackson was also a member of G.F.D.A. and N.F.D.A. and a member of the Georgia National Guard in the Gainesville Post. He was past president of the Jefferson Rotary Club, former board member of the Woodbine cemetery Association and former board member of the Jefferson Housing Authority.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson with the Revs. Cary Hilliard and Dennis Kesler and Dr. Gerald Mitton officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. Larry Boyd, Doug Farmer, Walter Lentz, Delone Muse, Donald Smith, Gene Tanner and Christopher Wheaton served as pallbearers.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Raye Dean Jackson, Jefferson; one son, Scott Jackson, Cartersville; one brother, Jerry Jackson, Chestnut Mountain; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret Hayes
Mrs. Margaret Hayes, 78, of Hoschton, died Thursday, January 30, 2003.
A daughter of the late Zeb and May Jenkins, Mrs. Hayes had resided in Jackson County for most of her life.
She was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 1, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Rusty Newman officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by her husband, Myron Hayes, Hoschton; daughter, Susan Radey, Hoschton; son, Joseph Hayes, Winder; sister, Evelyn Hendrix, Madison; and brother, Virl E. Jenkins, Rutledge.

James C. Lester
James Curtis Lester, 71, of Athens, died Sunday, February 2, 2003.
A native of Athens, Mr. Lester was a son of the late Robert and Daisy Weathersbee Lester.
He was a retired insurance agent and a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, at New Harmony Baptist Church with the Revs. Howard Garrison and Kenneth Dillard officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his former wife, Hazel Pittman Lester, Nicholson; four sons, Mike Lester, Farmington, and Tommy Lester, David Lester and Marshall Lester, all of Nicholson; two daughters, Connie Richardson and Tonya Lester, both of Nicholson; one sister, Louise Bishop, Port Orange, Fla.; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.

Arthur G. ‘Buster’ Parks Jr.
Arthur Guy “Buster” Parks Jr., 83, of Pendergrass, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
Mr. Parks was born December 2, 1919, in Jackson County, a son of the late Arthur Guy Parks Sr. and Myrt Langford Parks.
Mr. Parks was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he participated in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was in the 195th Field Artillery Battalion.
Mr. Parks was employed by Gainesville Ford and later retired as a rural mail carrier after serving the Pendergrass and Talmo communities for 33 years. He was a lifelong member of Holly Springs United Methodist Church, Pendergrass.
Mr. Parks was preceded in death by a grandson, James Arthur Parks, and a brother, Mack Parks.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 3, at Holly Springs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mark Tjepkema, Bob Lewis and Tom Fish officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Andrew Benson, Matthew Benson, Jacob Davis, Kane Davis, Rodney Davis, Mark Price, Joshua Watson, Reece Westbrook and Michael Vaughn served as pallbearers.
Mr. Parks is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Bradley Parks, Pendergrass; five daughters, Guy Dean Benson, Jefferson, Meta Hages and Celestine Vaughn, both of Pendergrass, Paula Price, Hoschton, and Andrea Tjepkema, Petersburg, Va.; two sisters, Frances Marlow and Jean Savage, both of Pendergrass; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Amy S. Rhodes
Mrs. Amy Sims Rhodes, 94, of Murrayville, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at her residence following a period of declining health.
A lifelong resident of Hall County, Mrs. Rhodes was a daughter of the late Robert and Vada Hurley Elrod.
She worked in the lunchroom at Lyman Hall School for 24 years, and worked in the nursery at Lakewood Baptist Church for over 50 years. A charter member, Mrs. Rhodes was also the oldest member of Lakewood Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack Sims, and R.L. Rhodes, and a son, Paul J. Sims.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, at Lakewood Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Smiley and the Rev. Steve Barnum officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Martha Sims, Blairsville; daughter, Mary Woody, Murrayville; step-daughters, Barbara Economon, Orlando, Fla., and Betti Anderson, Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, David Sims, Donald Sims, Danny and Wanda Fowler and Dean and Annette Fowler, all of Murrayville, Beth W. and Van Bullock and Chad and Charlotte Sims, all of Jefferson, and Chip and Darlene Sims, Flowery Branch; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Smith, Murrayville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Marjorie N. Ballew
Mrs. Marjorie Newman Ballew, 74, of Talmo, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at Crawford Long Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born in Polk County, Tenn., on August 14, 1928, Mrs. Ballew was a daughter of the late James and Celia Patterson Newman.
She was a house parent with the United Methodist Church Children’s Home and was a member of Talmo Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 1, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson. Burial was in the Talmo Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Loretta Ballew, Talmo, and Diane Moody, Jackson; one son, Robert Ballew, Jackson; one sister, Lousie Mathis, Blueridge; two brothers, J.L. Newman, Michigan, and James Newman, Griffin; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Sharon L. Underwood
Mrs. Sharon Lynn Minor Underwood, 53, of Jefferson, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Underwood was born April 20, 1949, in Duvall County, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Emmaline Smith Minor.
Mrs. Underwood was employed as a nursing assistant and was a member of Oconee Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 1, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Charles Reese officiating. Burial was in the Homer Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Mrs. Underwood is survived by her husband, P.A. Underwood, Jefferson; one son, Kevin Underwood, Huntsville, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

Grover C. ‘G.C.’ Cooper Jr.
Grover C. “G.C.” Cooper Jr., 89, of Hoschton (Duncan Creek Community), died Tuesday, February 4, 2003.
A longtime resident of the Duncan Creek Community, Mr. Cooper was born in Jackson County. He retired from Complete Auto Transit Co., Atlanta, where he worked as a truck mechanic and a store operator. Mr. Cooper was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Hoschton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Euell Cheek Cooper, and a daughter, Jean Cooper Saine.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 7, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. Sammy Everett officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Mona Cooper, Suwanee; son-in-law, Bob Saine, Sugar Hill; grandchildren, Michael and Evelyn Cooper, Lawrenceville, Robin and Brian Holbrook, Cumming, Jonathan Cooper and Donna and Brett Alexander, all of Lilburn, and Renee and Mark Suchanec and Lisa and Mike Horah, all of Buford; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Mrs. Geneva Cooper Kennedy, Hoschton; brother and sister-in-law, Otis and Mary Cooper, California; brother, Cecil L. Telvia Sharpe Lewis, of 21 Comer Street, Maysville, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 7, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery.
Visitation is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Joyce A. Stow
Mrs. Joyce Ann Jones Stow, 60, of Maysville, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Stow was born May 19, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., a daughter of the late Alvin and Gertrude Knight Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of Jefferson Pentecostal Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 6, at Jefferson Pentecostal Church with Pastor Gary Hosch and Brother Pierce Ashmore officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Stow is survived by her husband, Arthur Wilburn Stow, Maysville; one daughter, Ella Mae Myers, Gainesville; two sons, Arthur Wilburn Stow Jr., Bradenton, Fla., and Donald Douglas Stow, Maysville; four brothers, Daniel Jones and David Jones, both of Gainesville, Fred Jones, Cleveland, and Paul Jones, Oakwood; five sisters, Janet Pierce, Gainesville, Ruby Smith and Cathy Sturgill, both of Lula, and Wanda Stewart and Mary Turpin, both of Flowery Branch; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson.
