Carolyn S. Moon
Mrs. Carolyn S. Moon, 74, of Loganville, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003.
Mrs. Moon retired as a postal worker after 11 years with the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Homer United Methodist Church.
“A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Moon enjoyed camping and farming on their old homeplace in Banks County,” said family members. “She also enjoyed traveling and staying active in her senior group, such as her Senior Citizen Bingo Group.”
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, in the chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Loganville, with the Revs. James McLendon and Fred Bedingfield officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Loganville.
Mrs. Moon is survived by her husband, L.T. Moon, Loganville; sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Anne Moon, Homer, and Steve and Beverly Moon, Loganville; sister, Connie Hodges, Winter Park, Fla.; grandchildren, Matthew and Daphne Moon, Maysville, Samantha Moon, Fayetteville, N.C., Tanya Moon, Loganville, and Steven and Kelly Moon, Suwanee; great-grandchildren, Tyler Moon and Emily Moon, both of Maysville; and many nieces and nephews.
Tim Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary L. Sims
Mrs. Mary Louise Gillispie Sims, 46, of Jefferson, formerly of Franklin County, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003.
Born in Jackson County, Mrs. Sims was a daughter of the late Herman and Thelma Gillispie, and the wife of the late Larry Sims.
She was a housewife and an active member of Bush River Baptist Church, Maysville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Bush River Baptist Church with the Rev. Julius Mack, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three children, Tina Starks, LaFredrick Gillispie and Nakenia Sims, all of Jefferson; five sisters, Lula Little, Pearl Gillispie and Betty Gillispie, all of Jefferson, Francine Collins, Athens, and Detra Watson, Winder; one brother, Jewell Gillispie, Jefferson; and five grandchildren.
Forestglen Mortuary, Inc., Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.

John R. Parten
John R. Parten, 84, of Bethlehem, died Friday, April 4, 2003.
Born in Oglethorpe County, Mr. Parten was the son of the late John W. Parten and Eula Jane Dunagan Parten.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Parten was a carpenter and retired from Piedmont Builders. He was a member of Bethlehem First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Jack Segars officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Parten is survived by his wife, Alvor K. Parten, Bethlehem; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Rena Parten, Bethlehem; sister, Berthaleen Duck, Braselton; granddaughter, Tam Mull, Bethlehem; and great-grandson, Trenton Mull, Bethlehem.
Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or to the American Heart Association.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ethel B. Routh
Mrs. Ethel B. Routh, 97, of Maysville, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her residence.
A native of Franklin County, N.C., Mrs. Routh was the daughter of the late Jerome and Mary Elizabeth Ball, and the wife of the late J.J. Routh.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Jack L. Routh, J. Edward Routh and Robert L. Routh.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Shannon Hills Chapel with the Rev. Charles Crawford officiating. Burial was in Gulford Memorial Park.
Survivors include two daughters, Cleta M. Noller, Maysville, and Nona L. Byrd, Brown Summit, N.C.; and many, many grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of local arrangements, with Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements in Greensboro, N.C.

Paul Flowers
Paul Flowers, 60, of Baldwin, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
A native of Tennessee, Mr. Flowers was born October 30, 1942, a son of the late Wesley Thomas and Pauline Colley Flowers.
He received his masters degree in education from the University of Georgia and taught in the Jackson County School System for a number of years. He was also owner and operator of School Factory, a school supply company.
Mr. Flowers was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and was a member of the Cornelia Church of Christ.
“He gave more to life than he took from it,” said family members. “He will be woefully missed by friends and family, but mostly by his beloved son and wife.”
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with Ron Cope officiating.
Mr. Flowers is survived by his wife, Sara Stephens Flowers, Baldwin; son, Jason Flowers, Baldwin; step-son, Mickey Reynolds, Athens; step-daughter, Penny Nuss, Athens; sister, Paulette Flowers, Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Dale Flowers and Charles Flowers, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Neil Flowers, South Carolina; and three step-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cornelia Church of Christ, 429 S. Main Street, Cornelia, GA 30531, or to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, 2150 Limestone Parkway, Gainesville, GA 30501.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph L. Fields
Joseph Lewis Fields, 61, of Nicholson, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born April 18, 1941, in Jackson County, Mr. Fields was a son of the late Sylvester B. Fields and Evie Doretta Taylor Kesler.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed as a tower operator for Westinghouse Co. in Athens. Mr. Fields was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Fields.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Curtis Hammond officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Danny Akers, David Akers, Woody Brown, Benji Fields, Chuck Roberts and Dennis Roberts served as pallbearers.
Mr. Fields is survived by his wife, Sara Frances Fields, Nicholson; daughters, Lynn Norman, Hull, Sissy Richardson, Westminster, S.C., Lisa Gillespie, Commerce, Jolene Peters, Athens, Amanda Reed, Jefferson, and Lisa Cash and Sandy Norris, both of Nicholson; brothers, Charles Fields, Nicholson, and Wayne Fields, Lexington; and seven grandchildren.
Evans Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

O.C. ‘Cecil’ Murdock
O.C. “Cecil” Murdock, 94, of Commerce, formerly of Wichita Falls, Texas, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Murdock was born April 25, 1908, in Monahan County, Texas, the son of the late Sidney Estes and Nettie Gertrude Murdock.
He was a retired grocery man and a member of City View Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Chad Payne officiating. Burial was in the Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Murdock is survived by his wife, Anna Belle Mobley Murdock, Commerce; one son, Buddy Charles Murdock, Commerce; one sister, Erine Mae Harpole, Golden, Texas; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lottie ‘Sparkie’ Rhoden
Mrs. Lottie “Sparkie” Rhoden, 73, of Winder, died Sunday, April 6, 2003.
Born in Barrow County, Mrs. Rhoden was a daughter of the late Nathan G. Bagwell and Florence M. England Bagwell, and the wife of the late Raynor Rhoden.
She was of the Holiness denomination.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Jimmy Glaze officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mrs. Rhoden is survived by one brother, Richard Bagwell, Mitchell; two sisters, Eva Lou Gable, Colbert, and Ruth Cole, Hoschton; and several nieces and nephews.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary A. Tate
Mrs. Mary Alice Thurmond Tate, 65, of Statham, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Tate was born November 26, 1937, in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Fred C. and Neva Adams Thurmond.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Statham. Mrs. Tate was preceded in death by a daughter, Autumn Reneé Tate, and a brother, Paul W. Thurmond.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Healan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Herman Carlyle, Jack Duncan, Greg Garmon, Wesley Greeson, Damon Tate and Freddy Thurmond served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Tate is survived by her husband, Doug Tate, Statham; and a daughter, Nyoka Tate Garmon, Statham.
Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, was in charge of arrangements.

Jan W. Moore
Mrs. Jan Wiley Moore, 52, of Homer, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center of an extended illness.
A native of Fulton County, Mrs. Moore was a daughter of James and Martha Wiley, Homer.
She was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in the Nails Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Paula Bond, Homer; daughter, Stacie Bond, Carnesville; brothers, Jimmy Wiley, Carnesville, and Donald Wiley, Commerce; sister, Melissa Beatty, Homer; and one granddaughter.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
