William R. Fowler Jr.
William Robert Fowler Jr., 62, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Fowler was born July 16, 1941, in Barrow County. He was a son of the late William Robert Fowler Sr. and Willa Mae Brewer Fowler.
Mr. Fowler was employed as a roofer.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, in the Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Pendergrass, with the Rev. Tim Strickland officiating.
Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Charlotte Fowler, Jefferson; son, William Carlton Fowler, Jefferson; daughter, Renee Fowler, Jefferson; step-sons, Bill Fowler, Gainesville, and Wiley Fowler, Commerce; step-daughters, Mary Ann Page, Fayetteville, N.C., and Edna Marie Tatum, Ila; brother, Edward Fowler, Winder; sister, Shelby Pressley, Commerce; and eight grandchildren.

Ola J. Webb
Mrs. Ola Jurelle Merck Webb, 76, of Commerce, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Webb was born October 18, 1926, in Banks County, a daughter of the late Paul and Essie Moore Merck.
She was retired from the U.S. Census and was a member of Harmony Christian Church. Mrs. Webb was preceded in death by her husband, Woodson K. Webb, and a brother, Rogers Merck.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Henry Webb and Swayne Cochran officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Webb, Witchita, Kan.; daughters, Janis Berryman, Kent, Wash., Jurelle Cobb, Colbert, and Paulette Egan, Athens; sisters, Edna Osborne, Conyers, and Edith Sims, Marietta; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one step-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren.

Fabian B. Hembree
Fabian Bo Hembree, 42, of Athens, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at his residence of a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 14, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Ralph Arnold officiating. Burial will be in the New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Hembree is survived by his mother, Barbara M. Hembree, Athens; two daughters, Leslie Ann and Ashley Marie Hembree, both of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Jim Cecil Hembree, Hull, and John Hembree and Audrey Hembree, both of Nicholson; and one sister, Mary Dudley, Winterville.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Shirley A. Pinion
Ms. Shirley Ann Pinion, 34, of Buford, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 15, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford. Burial will be in the Peachtree Road Baptist Church Cemetery, Suwanee.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Richard L. Turner
Richard Lee Turner died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at New Horizon West of Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. Turner was born January 23, 1916, in Atlanta. He was the son of Howard L. and Allene Jones Turner. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Dunson Turner and was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Turner Black.
Mr. Turner was retired from the automobile manufacturing industry, where he was employed for over 47 years. He was a member of Stewart Avenue United Methodist Church of Atlanta and was a Mason. Mr. Turner attended St. Paul United Methodist Church of Gainesville faithfully when health permitted.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, with the Rev. Joe Coller, pastor of Stewart Avenue United Methodist Church, presiding.
Survivors include a sister, Edna Turner Waldrep, Birmingham, Ala.; brother, Howard Lee Turner Jr., Maysville; sisters-in-law, Saralene Coler, Rome, Frances Boswell, Norcross, Nelda Dunson, Atlanta, and Annie (Deedie) Turner, Maysville; brothers-in-law, Ralph Dunson, Commerce, Neal L. Black, Cleveland, Eugene C. Waldrep, Birmingham, Ala., and Marvin Coler, Rome; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Michael ‘Porky’ Fowler
Michael Lee “Porky” Fowler, 43, of Jefferson, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Macon Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mr. Fowler was born in Hall County on January 12, 1960. He was a son of Ernesteen Peterson Fowler, Jefferson, and the late James H. Fowler.
Mr. Fowler was employed in the tree removal business and was a member of Arcade Community Church, Jefferson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 10, at Arcade Community Church with the Rev. Palmer Pace officiating.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Fowler is survived by his wife, Tonya Ann Weaver Fowler, Jefferson; step-daughter, Victoria Marie Weaver, Commerce; brothers, James Arthur Fowler and Timothy Hubert Fowler, both of Jefferson; and sister, Linda Marie Fowler, Jefferson.

Rev. Willie F. Pattman
The Rev. Willie Frank Pattman, of Commerce, died Saturday, August 9, 2003, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
The Rev. Pattman was born May 12, 1945, in Commerce, to the late Willie Henry Pattman and Frances Cheney Reed. He was educated in the Jackson County School System, attending J.L. Williams Elementary School and graduating from Bryan High School in Jefferson. He later served his country in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. He met Mary Alice Pattman, and after a courtship, they were married
on December 7, 1968.
The Rev. Pattman accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Warren Chapel United Methodist Church, Commerce. He served on many boards and committees and gave leadership in many capacities as Lay Leader, Trustee Chairperson and Chair of the Administrative Board.
In May 1987, he preached his first sermon of many and after that particular service, he was brought to the attention of the Gainesville District Superintendent. He was then appointed as pastor of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in June 1987. Under his leadership, a new church building was built, ministries were organized and the Rev. Pattman remained their pastor for 11 years.
In June 1998, Pastor Pattman was assigned to his home church, Warren Chapel United Methodist, where he served until June 2003.
Pastor Pattman’s faithful service and dedication brought much stability and growth to the church in that the building was remodeled as well as the strengthening of the choir and usher ministries, it was stated. He was always determined to do the best with what he had.
The Rev. Pattman was also employed as a shift supervisor at Mount Vernon Mills. He served in various capacities in both Jackson and Hall counties, including the Paragon Social Club, NAACP and the Ministerial Association. He was the first African American to serve on the Commerce City Council and was recently selected to serve on the Jackson County Department of Family & Children Services Board.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, at Warren Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Linwood Burns, pastor, officiating. The eulogy was given by the Rev. Robert Melson. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
The Rev. Pattman is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Mary Alice Pattman; daughter, Kendra Pattman; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Marquez Jones and Trisha and Todd Harper; grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Amber, Tatiauna, Todd Jr., Miles, Xavier, and Franklin Malik; brothers, Harrison Pattman, Tony Reed, David G. Patmon, Tony Patmon and Johnny Patmon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur Lee and Barbara Pattman and James and Earnestine Pattman; sisters, Sheila Barnett, Deborah Reed, Eleanor Patmon and Shelia Bush; one great-uncle, Sam Edwards; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Johnnie M. Dooley
Mrs. Johnnie Mae Porter Dooley, 94, of Winder, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003.
Born in Jackson County, Mrs. Dooley was a daughter of the late Johnnie M. and Asalee Kirk Porter.
She moved to Barrow County from Covington and Madison and was a member of Canaan Baptist Church, Covington.
Mrs. Dooley was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Dooley, a brother, Quilla Porter, and two sisters, Belle Lee and Sybil Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 14, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Larry Davison and Joel Shadburn officiating. Burial will be in Statham City Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Horace M. Dooley, Jefferson, and Bennie J. Dooley, Bogart; two daughters, Doris Dooley Young, Grayson, and Jo Fleming, Bethlehem; two sisters, Lucille Baker, High Shoals, and Irene Hawk, Harpersville, Ala.; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joe C. Payne
Joe Calvin Payne, 78, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Hill Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mr. Payne was born in Hall County on February 27, 1925. He was the son of the late Alvin Payne and the late Myrtle Estelle Venable Payne and the step-son of the late Lona Jackson Payne.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Payne was a retired carpenter. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Jefferson, and a member of the Albert Gordan VFW Post & Masonic Lodge #36, Jefferson.
Mr. Payne was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Payne.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Hulon Hill officiating. Burial was in the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. Ben Nunley, John Gary, Randall Gary, Dustin Savage, Casey Williams and Yancy Williams served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda P. Clark, Sandra P. Nunley and Brenda Savage, all of Jefferson; two sons, Jeff Payne and Steve Payne, both of Jefferson; seven sisters, Agnes “Teeter” Bell, Neta Hix, Mary “Tootsie” Norris, Reba Parks and Peggy Shirley, all of Jefferson, Hazel Lancaster, Gainesville, and Nancy Rylee, Maysville; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary L. Aikens
Mrs. Mary Lou Aikens, 77, of Jefferson, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center of an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Aikens was the daughter of the late Sammy and Frances Hart Kimsey.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 28, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Franklin officiating.
Survivors include two sons, James Edward Aikens, Jefferson, and David Aikens, Braselton; two daughters, Peggy Ann Vandergriff, Jefferson, and Bertie Mae Hicks, Maysville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
