Robert L. ‘Junior’ Hattaway Jr.
Robert L. “Junior” Hattaway Jr., 72, of Danielsville, died Sunday, February 8, 2004, at his home.
Mr. Hattaway was born April 13, 1931, in Madison County. He was a son of the late Robert L. Sr. and Florida Mae Curtis Hattaway.
Mr. Hattaway was a heavy equipment operator and attended Old Canon Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Jack Evans and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Danielsville. Mr. Hattaway’s grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hattaway is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Phillips Hattaway, Danielsville; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Florence Hattaway, Danielsville, and Jerry and Margie Hattaway, Canon; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Frank Coile and Carol and Mike Hardy, all of Danielsville, and Judy Culpepper Downs and David Downs, Glencoe, Ky.; grandchildren, Scott Coile, Winterville, Jessica and Chad Hart, Hartwell, Jason Hattaway and Matt Hardy, both of Danielsville, Eric and P.J. Hattaway, Watkinsville, Kim and Kevin Little, Royston, Jeff and Michelle Culpepper, Nicholson, and Christy and Jason Goldman, Commerce; five great-grandchildren; brothers, John, LeRoy, Eugene and Billy Hattaway, all of Danielsville, and Elmer Hattaway, Waycross; and sister, Marjorie Hill, Danielsville.

Brandon Turley
Brandon Michael Turley, 19, of Winder, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Mr. Turley was a son of Lisa Turley, Monroe, and the late Terrance Dale Turley.
He was a senior at Winder Barrow High School.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Melanie McElhiney officiating.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a brother, Anthony Joe Turley, Rockwall, Texas; sister, Kelly Valentine, Walnut Grove, Texas; and nieces, Catina Turley and Amber Dean, Fayetteville, and Stephanie Walden, Sharpsburg.

Hazel C. Cooksey
Mrs. Hazel Corrine Joyce Cooksey, 68, of Commerce, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004.
Mrs. Cooksey was born May 30, 1935, in Bedford County, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late Edgar Minton and Annie Mae Henley Joyce.
Mrs. Cooksey was a retired school teacher and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 8, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Swayne Cochran and Mike Hudman officiating.
Mrs. Cooksey is survived by her husband, Norman Cooksey, Commerce.

Bobby J. Herbert
Bobby Joe Herbert, 75, of Colbert, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Herbert was a son of the late Otha and Lola Martin Herbert.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Magdlene Cook.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 5, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Paul Prather officiating. Burial was in Danielsville Memorial Gardens. David Scogin, Jerry Scogin, Bobby Cook, Tommy Herbert, Danny Herbert and Norm Wilkie served as pallbearers.
Survivors include a sister, Mattie Scogin, Colbert; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Ellie Herbert, Gillsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Johnny L. Sears
Johnny Lee Sears, 57, of Commerce, died Friday, February 6, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Sears was born August 25, 1946, in Jackson County, a son of Mary Uldene Crumley Sears, Commerce, and the late Roger Sears.
He was a construction worker and was a member of Community Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 8, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Sears is survived by his wife, Kathy Ivester Sears, Commerce; two sons, Brian Sears, Commerce, and David Sears, Homer; two daughters, Julie Garrett, Commerce, and Lee Ann Sears, Hoschton; three brothers, Michael Sears, Paul Sears and Wesley Sears, all of Commerce; one sister, Sybil Cornell, Commerce; and nine grandchildren.

Charles ‘Smokey’ McBrayer
Charles “Smokey” McBrayer, 66, of Winder, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004.
Born in Cumming, Mr. McBrayer had lived in Barrow County since 1985. He was the son of the late Clevland and Polly Hamby McBrayer.
Mr. McBrayer retired from General Motors and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Mr. McBrayer was preceded in death by his wife, Linda R. Fain McBrayer.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 13, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Ed Peavy and Larmon Barron officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include a son, John Charles “Chuck” McBrayer, Winder; daughter, Tammy Morgan, Winder; sister, Nellie Wood, Braselton; and three grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Grady P. Hall
Grady Parker Hall, 83, of Elberton, died Thursday, February 5, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7, in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis H. Jones, Elberton, and Joy H. Story, Hartwell; four sons, Clyde H. Hall, Lonnie P. Hall and Joey D. Hall, all of Elberton, and Delford R. Hall, Pendergrass; one brother, Buford R. Hall, Snellville; and eight grandchildren.

Walter E. ‘Eddie’ Elder III
Walter E. “Eddie” Elder III, 65, of Winder, died Friday, February 6, 2004.
Born in Barrow County, Mr. Elder was a son of the late Ernest and Sadie Hill Elder.
He was the former owner of Hill’s Office Equipment in Winder, and was serving as chairman of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 8, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Tom Vanlaningham and Jody Hice officiating. Burial was in the Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Smith Elder, Winder; daughter, Susan E. Crowe, Bethlehem; brother, David Elder, Winder; sister, Mary Ann Baker, Winder; and three grandchildren, Brandon, Justin and Alex.

Jennie L. Hancock
Mrs. Jennie Lee Mapp Hancock, 96, of Jefferson, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Athens Regional Medical Center after a short illness.
Mrs. Hancock was a daughter of the late James Howell and Jennie Skellie Mapp, Athens.
Mrs. Hancock was secretary to the vice president of the Athens Georgia Power Company for 47 years, retiring in 1973. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, a charter member of the Athens Pilot Club and a volunteer at Athens Regional Medical Center for many years.
Mrs. Hancock was preceded in death by her husband, George O. Hancock; two brothers, Armond Mapp, Atlanta, and Clarence Mapp, Lake City, S.C.; and three sisters, Mamie Callaway, Gladys Cannon and Nellie Burpee, all of Athens.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, in Oconee Hill cemetery with the Rev. Bill Ross officiating.
“Dee,” as she was fondly called, is survived by two nieces, four nephews, seven great-nieces, five great-nephews and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Thomas L. Campbell
Thomas Leo Campbell, 57, of Maysville, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his residence.
Born in Fulton County on November 11, 1946, Mr. Campbell was the son of the late Thomas Leo Campbell Sr. and Sybil Collins Campbell.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a retired salesperson.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Stuart Lang officiating.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife, Martha Norris Campbell, Maysville; sons, Bryan Campbell, Monroe, and T.J. Campbell, Snellville; daughter, Jeannie Gilliland, Lilburn; sister, Janet Jenkins, Lilburn; and four grandchildren.

Hester T. Brooks
Mrs. Hester Tanner Brooks, 104, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004.
Mrs. Brooks was born October 9, 1899, and had the rare privilege of living in three different centuries.
“Miss Hester,” as she was affectionately called by hundreds of school children, was greatly loved and respected for the 46 years she taught in the public schools of Hall, Clarke and Jackson counties, it was stated. She is remembered by her many friends and family members as a soft spoken lady of dignity and refinement.
Mrs. Brooks was the second of 12 children born to Moses Shelton and Elizabeth Cash Tanner, a pioneer family in the Chestnut Mountain community.
She married
Ernest Brooks, a local Jackson County farmer, in 1943, and became not only a bride, but a mother to nine children from Mr. Brooks’ previous marriage to the late Rose Haggard Brooks.
She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and an active member of Pendergrass Baptist Church until she became homebound, keeping in touch with the congregation through frequent home visits from her pastor, deacons and other members.
Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Ernest Brooks, who died in 1986, a daughter, Nell Brooks Evans, who died in 2001, and all of her 11 siblings.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Pendergrass Baptist Church with the Revs. Greg Bagley and Fred L. Maddox officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Brooks is survived by four sons, James, Commerce, Emory, Lawrenceville, Billy, Smyrna, and Davis, Rome; four daughters, Kathleen Murphy, Chestnut Mountain, Virginia Bradford, Conyers, Emma Dennis, Atlanta, and Patricia Maddox, Statesboro; a sister-in-law, Lurlene Duck Tanner; 30 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pendergrass Baptist Church.
