Sandra E. Jacobs
Sandra Elaine Jacobs, 51, of Talmo, died suddenly on Monday, June 14, 2004.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel, Buford.

Kay G. Bauerband
Mrs. Kay Gentry Bauerband, 43, of Gainesville, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, after a long bout with breast cancer.
Mrs. Bauerband was a 1979 graduate of Warner Robins High School. After two years at the University of Georgia, she went to the Medical College of Georgia, where she received degrees in dental hygiene and nursing.
“Despite her illness, Kay was an avid tennis player and exercise enthusiast, as well as being a loving wife and homemaker,” said family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Gainesville. Burial will follow in the Holly Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson County.
Mrs. Bauerband is survived by her husband, Dr. James Bauerband, Gainesville; three daughters, Joy, Caroline and Hallie, all of Gainesville; her mother, Mary Gentry, Gainesville; and one brother, the Rev. C. Ray Gentry, Lawrenceville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Christian School or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1397 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30501.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville.
Little-Davenport Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite Parks Nix
Marguerite Parks Nix, age 91, died June 12, 2004, at BJC Medical Center Nursing Facility. She was born on March 31, 1913, in Gainesville, Georgia.
She was the daughter of Edward Thomas “Ned” Parks, Sr. and Era Blanche Bird, of Gainesville, and the great-great-granddaughter of Benjamin Parks, of Dahlonega Gold Rush fame. Mrs. Nix was also a survivor of the 1936 Gainesville tornado.
Mrs. Nix was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, J. Nelson Nix, and her brothers, Edward, Jr. and Curtis, Sr., and sisters, Myrtle and Emma.
She is survived by a son, J. Nelson Nix, Jr., of Chicago, Illinois. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Curtis Parks, Sr., of Gainesville, and Mrs. Dillard Nix, of Augusta, and a number of nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Nix had retired in 1971 from Commerce Public Schools where she is often remembered as a Fifth Grade teacher. She began her teaching career at Riverbend School in Gainesville and then Davis Academy in Banks County. A graduate of Breneau College, she also attended the University of Georgia and was certified to teach English, French and German languages. She had been active in the Retired Teachers Association.
Proud of her homemaking skills, she was well known for her baked goods. Mrs. Nix was a patriot who also served at home standing by the two men in her family through wartime military service. She also supported her husband in many years of political endeavors.
Mrs. Nix was a dedicated member of many years at the Commerce First Baptist Church, where she had served as church secretary and as Junior Department Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services were held at the Commerce First Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 15, at 11 a.m.

Connie F. Shumake
Mrs. Connie Ferguson Shumake, 92, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004.
Mrs. Shumake was born in Hall County, a daughter of the late Dowell Ferguson Sr. and Sally Bell Burke Ferguson.
She retired from Jefferson Mills and was a member of Academy Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shumake was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Shumake, and three children, Clarence, Jack and Douglas Shumake.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. Mark Spence and Lee Hunter officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. Tracy Shumake, Steve Shumake, Wayne Shumake, Lee Shumake, Eric Shumake, Douglas Shumake Jr., Jeff Shumake and Troy Shumake served as pallbearers.
Survivors include a daughter, Laura Shumake, Commerce; sons and daughters-in-law, Ned and Brenda Shumake and Nelson and Christa Shumake, all of Jefferson, and Danny and Nancy Shumake, Monroe; daughters-in-law, Peggy Shumake, Jefferson, and Sue Shumake, Grayson; sisters, Peggy Pilgrim, Woodstock, and Mae Bell Day, Monroe; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Evans Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Parks C. Gailey
Parks Carter Gailey, 89, of Commerce, died Monday, June 14, 2004.
Mr. Gailey was born August 10, 1914, in Jackson County, a son of the late Claude Hampton and Woodie Cathrine McDonald Gailey.
Mr. Gailey retired from Harmony Grove Mill and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudine Milford Gailey.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 17, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Verlin Reece officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Fleming Weaver, Gainesville; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kimberly and Jonathan Ballew, Roswell; great-granddaughter, Sydney Ballew, Roswell; brother, Harold Gailey, Commerce; and sisters, Cathrine Thompson, Iva, S.C., and Inez Davis, Dunwoody.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mount Olive Baptist Church Building Fund, 190 Mt. Olive Church Road, Commerce, GA 30529.
The family was to have received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Little-Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel ‘Sammy’ Martin
Samuel “Sammy” Martin, of North Carolina, formerly of Commerce, died Sunday, June 13, 2004.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Tina Willoughby Martin, Tampa, Fla.; his mother, Brenda Martin, Tampa Fla., formerly of Commerce; one son, Cory David Martin, Tampa, Fla.; five daughters, Maranda Leigh Martin, Angel Brooke Martin and Flossie Shayla Martin, all of Tampa, Fla., and Deanna Ochelle Laws and Melissa Renee Martin, both of Spindale, N.C.; one brother, Rodney Wade, Lula; one sister, Melissa Wade, Lula; and aunts, uncles, numerous cousins and friends.
No public visitation or viewing is planned.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

Dannie Farmer
Mrs. Dannie Marguerite Farmer, 57, Winder, died Sunday, July 25, 2004.
Mrs. Farmer was born in Barrow County, a daughter of Marguerite Bennett Austin, Winder, and the late Willie T. Austin. She was a member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Mr. Billy Farmer, Winder; two daughters, Tonya Brock and Donna Farmer, both of Winder; a sister, Deborah Russell, Clayton; 4 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Smith Memory Chapel, with the Rev. Mary E. Murphy officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Memorials should be made to The American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA 30605.

Lucille Cook
Lucille Watkins Cook, 91, Alto, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born in Banks County, December 10, 1912, she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel Watson Watkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Julishus W. Cook; son Edward Lee “Ed” Cook; brothers Tom, John and Hubert Watkins and a sister Ruby Watkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Lamar Christian Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Hazel Brady Baldwin; two sons John Cook, Alto and Ralph Cook, Commerce; one sister Janell Watkins, Baldwin; three brothers Clyde Watkins, Demorest, Fred Watkins, Mt Airy and Wilton Watkins, Baldwin; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Whitfield Funeral Home South Chapel, with the Revs. Ronnie Thurmond and Mike Franklin officiating. Burial was in Wade Cemetery.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin was in charge of arrangements.

W.C. Duncan
Mr. W.C. Duncan, 85, Danielsville, died July 24, 2004, at the Banks-Jackson-Commerce Medical Center.
Mr. Duncan was the son of the late Johnny and Hester Whitsel Duncan. He was retired from Harmony Grove Mills and was a United States Army Veteran of WW II and a member of Liberty Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Stewart Duncan; son and daughter-in-law Jimmy and Jane Duncan, Danielsville; daughter, Elizabeth Collins, Danielsville; two grandchildren, Wesley and Dale Duncan, Danielsville, and one great-granddaughter, Courtney Duncan, Danielsville.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, July 27, 2004, from Liberty Church, with the Revs. Tommy Watson and Paul Bone officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

Francine Beck
Francine Brown Beck, 90, Athens, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Beck was a homemaker and was employed by Belk for many years in downtown Athens. She was a Charter Member of Central Baptist Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and taught Sunday School. She held the title of Beauty Queen at St. Mary’s Long Term Care Facility and was first runner-up in Mrs. Georgia Nursing Home in 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Andrew Beck Sr. and daughter, Frances Beck Adams.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Pat and Carl Sewell, Athens, Marie Richards, Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Rita Beck, Yutan, Neb., Winfred and Annette Beck, Comer, Samuel Beck, Comer, Harry and Vonnie Beck, Decatur; sons-in-law Marvin Adams, Athens, Deke Richards, Gainesville; sister, Elizabeth Conley, Athens; brothers, Sam Brown, Tom Brown and James Brown, Commerce; grandchildren, Mark and Pam Adams, Alpharetta, Robert and Dana Hughes Adams, Athens, Jeff and Susan Yarbrough, Watkinsville, Karen Yarbrough, Athens, Michelle and Jesse Carter, Gainesville, Bill Beck and Charlie Beck, Yutan, Neb., Cindy and Clayton Mann, Seattle, Wash., Tommy, Cody, Tamara and Vonnie Beck, Comer; great-grandchildren, Will, Drew and Kyle Adams, Alpharetta, Megan Adams, Athens, Kayla and Megan Yarbrough, Watkinsville, Jesse Allen Carter Jr., Gainesville, Madeleine Beck, Omaha, Neb.; special friends, Tom and Martha Harvill.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 25, 2004, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with Dr. Bob Nash officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Bernstein Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sue Wier
Sue Lilliam Wier, 79, formerly of Commerce, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in the Athens Regional Hospital of an extended illness.
She was the daughter of the late Grogan and Susie Seagraves Short and the widow of Clarence Elliott (Red) Wier.
Survivors include a son, Charles Wier, Greensboro, and two daughters, Sharon fields, Lavonia, and Martha Sargent, Commerce; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday, July 25, 2004 from the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Douglas Duncan, Tim Garrett and Carl Beckman officiating. Burial was in the Erastus Church Cemetery.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.
