Mrs. Mogene Gibson Addis, 70, of Demorest, died Thursday, December 5, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a brief illness.
Born in Habersham County on August 22, 1932, Mrs. Addis was a daughter of the late Arthur and Fannie Simpson Gibson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church. Mrs. Addis was an avid quilter and genealogist.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Wesley Purcell, Luther Williams and Trent Smith officiating. Burial was in the Welcome Home Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Addis is survived by her husband, Junior Addis, Demorest; daughter, Rebecca Ferguson, Alto; daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Bill Lindeman, Grayson, and Joann and Butch Culberson, Mt. Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Sandra Addis, Mt. Airy; sister, Elsie Proxmire, Conyers; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mattie Johnson
Mrs. Mattie Lou Starr Johnson, 92, of Commerce, died Monday, December 9, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Born October 9, 1910, in Franklin County, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of the late Claude C. and Vanna McDuff Starr.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and of the Methodist denomination. She was preceded in death by her husband, Redford Raymond Johnson, a son, Redford Starr Johnson, and four sisters, Gladys Fricks, Eulalia Starr, Vehna Martin and Ethel Martin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12, in B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, with the Rev. Furman Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Rutledge City Cemetery, Rutledge.
Survivors include one daughter, Kay Francis Johnson, Commerce; and seven nieces and nephews, Polly M. Casey, Canon, Jeanette M. Lewis, Clarkesville, Sara M. Ayers and Jarrell Martin, Royston, Roger Fricks, Commerce, and Johnny Martin and Ray Martin, Jackson, S.C.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Max M. Davis
Max Marvin Davis, 85, of Demorest, died Friday, December 6, 2002, at a private nursing home.
Mr. Davis was born on August 16, 1917, in Jackson County. He was a son of the late Charlie Ross and Susie Henry Davis, and was preceded in death by his wife, Louella Skelton Davis, two brothers, James Benjamin Davis and Robert Henry Davis, and a sister, Elsie Kate Smith.
Mr. Davis was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and was the owner of Davis 5 & 10 Store in Cornelia. He was a member of Cornelia United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 8, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Revs. Wayne Smith, Marcus Martin and Bob Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Level Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Scott Oliver, Toccoa, and Sarah Francis Martin, Buford; one brother, Charles Roy Davis, Demorest; and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia F. Sweat
Mrs. Patricia Foley Sweat, 70, of Commerce, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at her residence of an extended illness.
A native of Massachusetts, Mrs. Sweat had lived in Duval County, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Rose Small Foley and the widow of O.W. Sweat.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 7, at Rivermeade Hardedge-Giddens Chapel, Orange Park, Fla. Burial was in Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
Survivors include four sons, Jerry Van Orman, Spokane, Wash., Rob Smith, Apple Valley, Calif., Ron Smith, Pine Bluff, N.C., and Steve Griffeth, Hutchinson, Kan.; two daughters, Anne Williams, Orlando, Fla., and Arae Lyn Summersill, Commerce; three brothers, Billy Foley, Melbourne, Fla., Jim Foley, Manchester, N.H., and John Foley, Coco, Fla.; one sister, Phyllis Shaughnessy, Coco, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Willeree Watkins
Mrs. Willeree Armour Wilbanks Watkins, 74, of Cornelia, died Thursday, December 5, 2002, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Oglethorpe County on August 8, 1928, Mrs. Watkins was a daughter of Vadie Thomas Armour, Alto, and the late Dee Armour.
She was a retired inspector with Fieldale, an avid gardener and of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her first husband, J.H. Wilbanks, and two brothers, William Armour and Howard Armour.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, at B.C. Grant Baptist Church with the Revs. Clyde Garrison and Woodrow Hix officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Watkins is survived by her husband, John L. Watkins, Cornelia; daughter, Helen Wilbanks Thomas, Alto; step-sons, Anthony Watkins, Mt. Airy, and Marion Watkins, Homer; brothers, D.W. Armour, Demorest, and Faye Armour, Batesville; sisters, Bessie Wade, Alto, and Judy Clark, Mississippi; grandchildren, Barry Len Thomas and April Celeste Thomas, both of Alto; and great-grandchildren, Seth Harold Thomas and Kayla Marie Thomas.

James Varner
James Joel Varner, 79, of the Bold Springs Community, Carnesville, died Monday, December 9, 2002, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.
Born June 29, 1923, in Franklin County, Mr. Varner was the son of the late Muncey Eugene and Edna Susan Ford Varner. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alton Varner.
Mr. Varner was a retired school bus driver and mechanic for the Franklin County School System and had been employed with the Georgia Department of Transportation. A U.S. Army veteran, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, and was a longtime member of the Bold Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Varner was also an active member of Bold Springs United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, at Bold Springs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Stephen Horne and Tom Arnold officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Varner is survived by his wife, Eva Myra Hambrick Varner; daughters and sons-in-law, Mike and Vicki Seagraves and Philip and Myra Haley, all of Carnesville; grandson and wife, Brad and Brandi Seagraves; grandsons, Blake Haley and Brennon Haley; granddaughters, Bailee and Brylee Seagraves; brother, Edwin Varner, Rydal; and sister, Katherine Phillips, Loganville.

Mrs. Myra L. Briscoe, 91, of Homer, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, of an extended illness.
Mrs. Briscoe was a native of Floyd County. She was the widow of John Thomas Briscoe.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Paul Robertson officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Decatur.
Survivors include two sons, Freddie Briscoe, Covington, and David Briscoe, Daytona Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Sallie Saye, Homer, and Dianne Jackson, Senoia; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Hattie M. Boswell
Mrs. Hattie Mae Boswell, 83, of Com-merce, died Sunday, Feb-ruary 2, 2003, at BJC Nursing Home, Com-merce, after an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Boswell was a daughter of the late Andrew Echols Sr. and Harriett Echols.
She was a homemaker and retired from Harmony Grove Mills. Mrs. Boswell was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Boswell, two sons, Jewell and Larry Boswell, and a grandson, Chuck Boswell.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
Survivors include son, Ronald Boswell, Baldwin; sisters, Lucille Greenway, Lula, and Kathryn Hensley, Maysville; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Frances Carter, 73, of Statham, died Sunday, February 2, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Carter was born December 17, 1929, in Franklin County. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Seaborn and Ammie Bonds Cromer.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Douglas Duncan and Russell Page officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband, Maxie Lee Carter, Statham; one son, David Carter, Statham; three daughters, Debra Brock and Wanda Carter, both of Statham, and Brenda Palmer, Braselton; five brothers, Carson Cromer, Martinsville, Va., Doyle Cromer, J.C. Cromer and William Cromer, all of Commerce, and Mitchell Cromer, Baldwin; one sister, Faye Jenkins, Commerce; and five grandchildren.

James L. McClellan Jr.
James Lee McClellan Jr., 56, of Alto, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. McClellan was born July 10, 1946, in Banks County. He worked as a builder and attended Carmi Baptist Church.
Mr. McClellan was preceded in death by his father, James Lee McClellan Sr.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 31, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Revs. Kenneth Pilcher and Todd Smith officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his mother, Mary W. Dodd Hopkins, Alto; two daughters, Wanda McClellan, Alto, and Michele Collins, Baldwin; one sister, Diane Thomas, Gainesville; one brother, Jessie McClellan, Lula; and three grandchildren.
