Irene Cole
Miss Irene Cole, 84, of Commerce, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at Family Life Enrichment Center.
Born in Franklin County on April 8, 1919, Miss Cole was a daughter of the late Reppard and Lula Brawner Cole.
A homemaker, Miss Cole was a member of Middle River Baptist Church for 71 years, where she served as the teacher of the Junior Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by a brother, Benson Cole, and a cousin raised in the home, Grady Roberts.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, at Middle River Baptist Church with the Revs. John Swanger and Paul Jameson officiating. Burial was in the Middle River Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin Cole, Carnesville; sisters, Faye Cole and Mildred C. Minish, both of Commerce, Jimmie C. Nash, Elberton, Ann C. Rogers, Powder Springs, Nettie C. Smith, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Sarah C. Swindel, McDonough; five nieces and six nephews.

Thelma R. White
Mrs. Thelma Ruth White, 75, of Danielsville, died Monday, March 15, 2004, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Riverside Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include five sons, Junior White, Ila, James P. White, Loganville, and R.L. White, David White and Danny White, all of Danielsville; one daughter, Vivian Shumaker, Homer; four brothers, J.B. Montgomery, Winder, Claude Montgomery, Madison, Douglas Montgomery, Atlanta, and Gene Montgomery, Maysville; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce.

Charles Chambers
Charles Chambers, 83, of Ellaville, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at his home from complications due to prostate cancer.
His son, Gus Chambers, said his father left this world “with the same smile he gave everyone his entire life.”
Mr. Chambers’ “twinkly smile” was as much his trademark as his floppy, white tennis hat, it was stated.
Mr. Chambers was a son of Charlie Chambers and Eunice Wynn, Homer. He was the oldest of four children. Mr. Chambers attended the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a degree in agronomy. With the outbreak of World War II, he joined the United States Marine Corps. As a Second-Lieutenant gunnery officer, he fought in 13 battles in the Pacific Theater.
After the war, Mr. Chambers returned to Georgia, married
his childhood friend, Jeannette Chase, and raised a family. He was a former employee of Mississippi Chemical Co. and worked for Jerry Clower, the Southern comedian. For many years, Mr. Chambers lived throughout the South, but he moved his family to Ellaville in 1969, where he eventually retired. He was very active with the local library and taught Sunday School for many years at Ellaville United Methodist Church.
Mr. Chambers was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers, Bob and Inman Chambers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Billy Harris officiating. Burial will be in Camp Creek Cemetery, Cornelia.
Survivors include his son, Gus Chambers, Missoula, Mont.; his daughter, Dolly Bennett, Corinth, Miss.; his sister, Sara Brantley, Griffin; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Rev. Edward Patterson
The Rev. William Edward Patterson, 69, of Carnesville, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A son of the late William Glenn and Lillie Ariail Patterson, he was born August 17, 1934, in Franklin County, where he had lived the greater part of his life.
He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean War, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia, having received his master’s degree. He was employed with the Stephens County Board of Education, where he was coordinator of the Federal School Program and later the coordinator of the computer program in the Stephens County School System. The Rev. Patterson was an ordained Baptist minister and a member and associate pastor and deacon of Nails Creek Baptist Church, Homer, as well as a former Sunday School teacher at the church. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 4346 where he had served as the post chaplain and was also District of Georgia Chaplain and state Chaplain of the Georgia V.F.W. The Rev. Patterson was also a member of the Franklin County Lions Club, a member and past president of the Georgia State Teacher’s Association, a member and past president of the Franklin County Historical Society and was active in Franklin County genealogy. He was preceded in death by a son, Louis Edward Patterson, who passed away in 1977.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Nails Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Duane Eller and John Gwizdak officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors provided by members of the V.F.W. Post 4346. Active deacons of Nails Creek Baptist Church served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were inactive deacons of the church.
The Rev. Patterson is survived by his wife, Janet MacPherson Patterson, of the home; two daughters, Andrea Dean, Lavonia, and Anita King, Carnesville; one son, Thomas Glenn Patterson, Carnesville; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Wayne Patterson, Toccoa, and Trenton Patterson, Mt. Airy; and two sisters, Faye Robinson, Bowden, and Glenda Avery, Duluth.

John S. Massey
John Southers Massey, 83, of Moundville, Ala., died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Druid City Hospital, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Mr. Massey was born February 23, 1921, in Moundville, Ala. He was a son of the late Daniel Emmat and Addie Mae Southers Massey, and was preceded in death by a son, William David Massey, and a grandson, Brian Heath Massey.
Mr. Massey was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy, and was formerly employed with Lockheed Aircraft Manufacturing and Hayes Aircraft Manufacturing. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with Bishop Scott Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Baldwin cemetery with full military honors provided by members of the Rabun County Chapter #15, Disabled American Veterans and the Habersham County American Legion Post #84.
Survivors include a daughter, Ginger Dayton, Mt. Airy; son, Johnny Steven Massey, Hamilton, Ala.; sisters, Alberlee Wyatt, Moundville, Ala., and Pearl Standifer, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; brother, Richard Massey, Opelika, Ala.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

W.T. ‘Tom’ Angel
W.T. “Tom” Angel, 69, of Bishop, died Thursday, April 1, 2004.
Born in Fulton County, Mr. Angel was the son of the late John Daniel and Mattie Mae Miller Angel.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, in Bostwick Cemetery.
Survivors include his children, Rita Evans, Lula, Vicky Evans, Gillsville, and Michael Angel, Bishop; four sisters, Bertie Jones, Chatsworth, Loneva Blackwell, Dawsonville, Betty Hicks, Maysville, and Dolly Mae Holcombe, Cumming; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

SMSgt. Ervin Jackson “Stoney” Burke Sr., 73, of Danielsville, died Saturday, April 3, 2004.
Born in Fulton County, Mr. Burke was the son of the late Rudesil Jackson and Susie Bell Burke. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Jean Ingram Burke.
Mr. Burke retired from the United States Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict, Cuban Crisis and the Vietnam War. He was an active member of Central Lodge #229, Central, S.C.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Revs. Ben Glosson and Roy Cates officiating. Burial was in Oconee Hill cemetery with military honors and Masonic rites provided.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ervin J. (Jacky) Burke Jr. and Linda Burke, Gulfport, Miss.; son, Michael W. Sally S. Starr
Mrs. Sally Simmons Watts Starr, 84, of Clarkesville, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born October 14, 1919, in Habersham County, Mrs. Starr was the daughter of the late Cleland K. and Texie Bramblett Simmons.
She was a homemaker and a member of Chopped Oak Baptist Church. Mrs. Starr was preceded in death by a son, Donnis Watts.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, at Chopped Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. Alvin Burns officiating. Burial was in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Andrea Williams, Toccoa; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Pam Watts, Turnerville; son, Jerry Watts, Clarkesville; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Verner R. Benton
Verner R. Benton, 92, of Commerce, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Benton was born March 6, 1912, in Banks County. He was the son of the late James Willey and Maggie Ingram Benton.
Mr. Benton was a retired cattleman and attended Erastus Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Lessie Minish Benton, Commerce; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Bob McDowell, Athens, Brenda and Walter Wynn, Rockledge, and Gail and Randal Stinson, Macon; grandchildren, Holly Sneed, Forsyth, Rob McDowell, Bethlehem, Eva Marie Evans, Athens, Jason Wynn and Julie Wynn, both of Rockledge, Jennifer Wynn-Edge, Dublin, and Samantha Stinson, Jessica Stinson and Jonathan Stinson, all of Macon; great-grandchildren, Maggie Wynn and Eaton Wynn, both of Rockledge; and a number of nieces and nephews.

F. Lewis Pitts Sr.
F. Lewis Pitts Sr., 94, of Mt. Airy, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Stephens County Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Habersham County on May 22, 1909, Mr. Pitts was the son of the late Julian and Sarah Southerland Pitts.
He was a carpenter, an avid hunter and a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. Mr. Pitts was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Welcome Home Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Ryals officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Pitts is survived by his wife, Pretchel “Lillie Mae” “Pat” Brady Pitts, Mt. Airy; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Grady Allen, Mt. Airy; son and daughter-in-law, Joe A. and Carla Pitts, Mt. Airy; son and fiancée, Lewis Pitts Jr. and Kathy Shaunfield, Canton, N.C.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Helen Pritchett
Mrs. Helen Dalrymple Pritchett, 75, of the Plainview Community, Carnesville, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.
Born February 18, 1929, in Franklin County, Mrs. Pritchett was the daughter of the late Grace Poole Dalrymple.
She was a homemaker and seamstress and was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Pritchett was preceded in death by her husband, Gartrell Pritchett.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at Indian Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Stacey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. John Pritchett, Christopher Pritchett, Benji Cole, Bradley Gibson, Brandon Gibson, John Keese and Brady Vaughn served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three sons, Edward Pritchett, Clarkesville, Tommy Pritchett, Franklin Springs, and Ted Pritchett, Carnesville; five daughters, Joyce Kirby, Martin, Gail Avant, Royston, Glenda Brackett, Blairsville, Wanda Weaver, Toccoa, and Patsy Manley, Danielsville; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, June Pilgrim, Elberton, and Sybil Lambert, Carnesville.
