‘Dan’ Miller
Max Daniel "Dan" Miller, 58, of Carnesville, died Friday, November 19, 2004, at the Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens.
Born April 20, 1946 in Franklin County, he was the son of Sarah Evelyn Sanders Miller and the late Max Vincent Miller. He was a 1964 graduate of Franklin County High School. Before retirement he was a manager with the Advanced Auto Parts in Commerce. Mr. Miller was a member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jeanell Segars Miller, Carnesville; mother, Sarah Evelyn Sanders Miller; daughter, Janet Williams, Carnesville; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Cathy Miller, Carnesville; and seven grandchildren, Alex Williams, Jordan Williams, Madison Williams, Emily Miller, Brittany Miller, Mike Miller, Jr. and C.J. McDaniel; two sisters, Sandra Mansfield, Burke, Va., and Sharon McKillip, Athens.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 21, at Cross Roads Baptist Church with the Revs. Grady Jordan, Tommy Childress and Merritt Young Deer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

John Meister
John (Landon) James Meister, infant, of Clarkesville, died Thursday, November 25, 2004, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, J.C. and Verdina Meister, Herbert and Kathleen Rich, Lucy Jenkins, and Jim and Minnie Chambers.
Survivors include his parents, John and Tonya Jenkins Meister, Clarkesville; sister, Lauren Denise Meister, Clarkesville; grandparents, David and Brenda Meister, Alto, and Jimmy and Jimmie Jenkins, Clarkesville; and great-grandparent Rupert Jenkins, Baldwin.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, November 30, at the Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest with Rev. Scott Slaton officiating.

‘Gene’ Stewart
Eugene “Gene” Stewart, 82, of Alto, died Sunday, November 28, 2004, at the Lanier Park Hospital.
He was born March 4, 1922, in Habersham County, the son of the late Walter Allen and Vittie Lou Poole Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a retired carpenter, a greeter at Wal-Mart, member of AARP, and member of the Damascus Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Stewart.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Parfitt Stewart, Alto; a daughter, Gwen Crumley, Cornelia; a son, Robert K. Stewart, Blythe; one sister, Irma Lou Long, Toccoa; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, in the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Revs. Harold Ledford and Luther Williams officiating. Burial was in the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery.

Robert Danner
Robert C. Danner, 78, of Commerce, died Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at BJC Hospital following an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Danner and a sister, Maxine Shoenbeck.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Sue Russo, Commerce; a brother, Richard Danner, What Cheer, Iowa; a sister, Margaret Slyter, Davenport, Iowa; one grandchild, Danielle Mitchell; and three great-grandchildren.

‘Bob’ Heath
Dr. Robert W. "Bob" Heath, 67, of Franklin Springs, died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.
Born in Tulsa, Okla. August 15, 1937, he was the son of Sue Wever Heath, Tulsa, Okla., and the late A.J. (Jack) Heath. He was a retired College Professor at Emmanuel College and also had taught at Oral Roberts University and Southwestern Bible College. Before his death he was teaching online for the University of Maryland. Dr. Heath was an Ordained Minister in the Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended The Grove in Maysville. He was a member of Georgia Communication Association, Georgia Golf Association, Family Motor Coach Association and the Georgia Newmar Motor Coach Association. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Lynne Heath, and a half-sister, Jacqueline Heath Hume.
Survivors include his wife, Hester L. Henderson Heath, Franklin Springs; son, Robert D. Heath, Alpharetta; daughter, Susan Heath Johnson, Monroe; his mother; brothers, A.J. (Jim) Heath, Tulsa, Okla., and Charles Heath, Wellington, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, at the Franklin Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Glen Howard and Pastor Jeff Appling officiating. Burial was in Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville.

‘Vickie’ Banks
Victoria Ann Banks, 46, of Jefferson, died Saturday, November 27, 2004, at BJC Hospital, Commerce, following a massive heart attack.
Born October 2, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Harris. She was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Harris.

MR. SMITH
World War II veteran
JEFFERSON - Sumner J. Smith, 81, died Monday, August 9, 1999, following an extended illness.
A native of Jefferson, Mr. Smith was born March 4, 1918. He was a son of the late Dr. Sumner J. Smith and Ora Dyarman Smith.
Mr. Smith graduated from Martin Institute in 1933, later completing Young Harris College when he was 17. He also attended the University of Georgia, where he obtained a bachelor's and master's degree. Mr. Smith taught school in Maysville and in Sumter, S.C., and taught French at the University of Georgia for five years. In later years, he continued his education with studies in English and French.
Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran, having served in the 121st Infantry Regiment of the 8th Division, moving from Army camps in South to all over Europe, finally landing in Normandy 10 days after D-day. He received a Purple Heart after being wounded, a Bronze Star for bravery, four battle stars representing each of the areas he covered in the war with the Army, a combat infantry medal and a good conduct medal. Mr. Smith also received a 121st Infantry "Citizen of the Year" award in 1996.
He was employed with D.C. Heath and Company, with 30 years of service, where he worked as manager of the Southeastern office and sold college textbooks.
Mr. Smith served on the Shields-Ethridge Farm Foundation board, the Tumbling Waters Society and the Jackson County Adult Literacy Program. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson, the American Legion and of the Jefferson Historical Society.
Mr. Smith was a benefactor of Young Harris College, the University of Georgia, the Thornwell Home and School for Children in South Carolina and toward research on Parkinson's disease. He also gave 100 acres of land on the Commerce Road for construction of Northminster Retirement Home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 11, at the First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson with Drs. John Homer and William Thurman and the Rev. Stan Sizemore officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson.
Mr. Smith is survived by a special friend, Doug Rice, and a number of relatives.

County business leader
HOSCHTON - Kenneth Smith Bridges, 55, died Friday, August 6, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Bridges was a son of the late Smith and Katherine Fleeman Bridges.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1961 and attended Emmanuel College and the University of Georgia, where he majored in business administration. Mr. Bridges was owner and president of Katherine's Kitchen, Pendergrass, a restaurant he and his parents founded.
He managed Bridges Feed & Poultry Company, Pendergrass, from 1963 to 1967, and from 1966 to 1972 served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Bridges also headed Bridges Supply Company, as well as Bridges Exxon, which was located at the intersection of I-85 and US 129.
Mr. Bridges served as president of the Middle Oconee Watershed Association and the North Jackson Volunteer Fire Department, served as director of the Mountain Creek Little League Association and was active in the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as director in 1981, as vice president in 1982 and later as president.
He was a member of Mt. Paren Church of God, North.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 8, at the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Dennis Kesler and J.D. Sosebee officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include one daughter, Candace Hefner, Falls Church, Va.; one son, Blake Bridges, Spartanburg, S.C.; three sisters, Laverne Bridges, Rutherfordton, N.C., Carol Richardson, Piedmont, S.C., and Geanene Pass, Jefferson; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

COMMERCE - Billy Eugene Evans, 59, died Sunday, August 8, 1999, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Homer, Mr. Evans was born September 11, 1939. He was a son of Elizabeth Evans, Commerce.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 10, at Madison Street Baptist Church with the Rev. David Harbin officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one brother, Benny Evans, Commerce.

NICHOLSON - Mrs. Onie P. Burroughs, 91, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at a local hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, Mrs. Burroughs was born October 16, 1907. She was a daughter of the late Willis and Ida Kesler Pittman.
Mrs. Burroughs was a member of Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Burroughs.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 11, at Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Seagraves officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Jerry Adams, Lee Adams, Bobby Pittman, Otis Barnett Jr., Mike Pittman and David Hawks served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two brothers, Doyle Pittman, Nicholson, and Ed Pittman, Hull; and a number of nieces and nephews.
