COVINGTON - Hollis Mize, 83, formerly of Marietta, died Tuesday, November 5, 2000.
Born in Homer, Mr. Mize had lived in Marietta for 50 years. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church and instrumental in the beginning of Calvary Children's Home. Mr. Mize was retired as a painter with the Marietta Housing Authority, with 36 years of service.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 8, at Calvary Baptist Church, Powder Springs, with the Rev. Snyder Turner officiating. Burial was in Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery, Marietta.
Mr. Mize is survived by his wife, Bonnie L. Mize; three daughters, Betty McCowan, Covington, Martha Stanley, Canton, and Louise Bolling, Chatsworth; three sisters, Gladys Love and Cleo Alexander, both of Commerce, and Jeanette Vaughn, Meridian, Conn.; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

MR. WILLIAMS

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - J.D. Williams, 87, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Williams was born March 4, 1913, in Commerce, a son of the late David Berry Williams and Lula Ann Thurmond Williams.
He was a retired employee with Parkdale Mills Inc., Thomasville, N.C., and was a member of the Thomasville Masonic Lodge #214 A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite. Mr. Williams was also a member of Southside Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class and formerly served as a deacon, as church treasurer and a member of the building committee.
On October 1, 1938, he was married
to Paula Pauline Guin, who survives of the home.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 10, at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Blakley and Dr. Brooks L. Hunt officiating. Burial was in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Williams Clodfelter and Kirby Clodfelter, Bryan, Texas, and Delores Williams Leonard and Dale Leonard, Thomasville, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Flora Nell Wilkes, Commerce; granddaughters and husbands, Sonya and David Donahoe, Houston, Texas, and Crystal and Joseph White, Selma, N.C.; grandsons and wives, Kevin and Janet Clodfelter and Ashley and Dawn Leonard, all of Thomasville, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Window Fund of Southside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1042, Thomasville, NC 27361.

MR. BOSWELL
Retired Maysville police chief
MAYSVILLE - John Perino Boswell, 79, died Monday, December 11, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Boswell was born May 20, 1921, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Charles and Zora Bryant Boswell.
Mr. Boswell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a retired police chief of Maysville. He was a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Church and a member of the Georgia Peace Officers Association.
Mr. Boswell was preceded in death by a son, Herman Boswell.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 13, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Donald Tritt and David Bowen officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
Mr. Boswell is survived by his wife, Ola Mae Carroll Boswell, Maysville; four sons, John Boswell, Norman Boswell and Otis Boswell, all of Maysville, and L. Glynn Boswell, Commerce; two daughters, Martha Lewis, Maysville, and Joyce Wilson, Alto; five brothers, Bryan Boswell, Carnesville, Charles Boswell, Fairmont, George Boswell, Commerce, and Glynn Boswell and Journey R. Boswell, both of Maysville; four sisters, Mollie Blackwell, Homer, Laura Livingston, East Point, and Willie Sears and Georgialeen Thurmond, both of Maysville; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE - Jimmy Lee Ollis, 37, died Wednesday, December 6, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Ollis was born August 15, 1963, in Fulton County. He was a son of the late Harold Lee Ollis and Betty Jean Carroll.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 10, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jimmy Owensby officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Ollis is survived by four brothers, Pete Brooks and Michael Edward Ollis, both of Atlanta, Dean Konrady, Ohio, and Herman David Ollis, Commerce; and one sister, Regina Phillips, Commerce.

ATHENS - Mrs. Dorothy Spratlin Stephens died Saturday, December 9, 2000.
A life-long resident of Clarke County, Mrs. Stephens was a daughter of the late Elmer and Grace Wages Spratlin.
She was retired from Dupont and was a member Oconee Heights Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 11, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Christ Camden and Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Richard Horne, Tommy Kelley, Harry Spratlin, Tony Spratlin, Danny Bailey and Randy Jones served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Stephens is survived by her husband, Willard Stephens, Athens; two sons, Kim Stephens, Athens, and Gene Stephens, Maysville; two daughters, Terry Evans and Tina Blount, both of Athens; two brothers, Harry Spratlin Sr., Athens, and Elmer Spratlin Jr., Augusta; three sisters, Edna King and Sara Bailey, both of Athens, and Marie Kelly, Eastanollee; grandchildren, Kristy Gee and Jackie Evans, both of Athens, and Nick Stephens, Maysville; great-grandchildren, Shane and Amber Gee, both of Athens; and a number of nieces and nephews.

WINDER - Mrs. Janie Phillips, 50, died Saturday, December 9, 2000.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Jackson County, a daughter of Mildred Lance Nix and the late Claude Nix.
She had resided in Barrow County for most of her life and was a housewife.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 10, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Larry Youngblood officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Haven Nix, Ben Nix, Ryan Ruark, Donald Ruark, Justin Ruark and Robbie Beddingfield served as pallbearers.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, James Wayne Johnson Sr., Winder; daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Jeff Kelley, Cindy and Wade Reynolds and Paula and Paul McBride, all of Winder; step-son, Wayne Johnson Jr., Winder; mother and step-father, Mildred N. and Claude Ruark, Winder; two brothers, Billy Joe Nix and Dale Nix, both of Winder; two sisters, Claudette Austin and Judy Hogan, both of Hoschton; and seven grandchildren.

WINDER - Mrs. Martha Caroline "Marty" Parker Barnard, 41, formerly of Blairsville, died Monday, December 5, 2000, in Gastonia, N.C., from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Barnard was born March 11, 1959, in Marietta, a daughter of Jack J. Parker and Peggy C. McEver Parker, Blairsville.
She was a 1978 graduate of Union County High School and was a registered nurse. Mrs. Barnard had attended The House of Prayer Church before moving to the Winder area.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 7, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, Blairsville, with the Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. Special music was presented by The Kelly Trio. Myles Smith, Jimmy Shelnutt, Christa Doss, Gary McDonald, Andrew Turnage and Johnie Garmon served as pallbearers. Burial was in The House of Prayer Church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Steven Barnard, Winder; two daughters, Jamie E. Marshall and Lauren K. Barnard, both of Winder; one brother, Jeffrey L. Parker, Gastonia, N.C.; and many other relatives and friends.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Lillie Mae Hayes, 91, of Commerce, died Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Hayes was born July 5, 1909, a daughter of the late Charlie and Nora Smith Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Lee Hayes Sr.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 7, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. John Ingham officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one daughter, Norine Evans, Commerce; three brothers, James Brown, Sam Brown and Tom Brown, all of Commerce; four sisters, Francine Beck and Elizabeth Conley, both of Athens, and Pauline Edwards and Inez Marlowe, both of Commerce; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Thelma Gailey Freeman, 55, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000, at her daughter's residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Freeman was born in Hall County, a daughter of the late Fred Watson Gailey and Floyce McGinnis Gailey.
She was employed as a clerk with the Jackson County Health Department and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 14, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Mike Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by her husband, Phil Freeman, Jefferson; two daughters, Lisa Owens, Hoschton, and Michelle Whitehead, Nicholson; six sisters, Margaret Cathcart, Doraville, Virginia Little and Betty Cofield, both of Gainesville, Nancy Campbell, Marietta, Ruth Hardy, Jefferson, and Sandra Furr, Austell; three brothers, Ray Gailey, Perry Gailey and Lewis Gailey, all of Gainesville; and two grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

ATHENS - Robert Larry "Bob" Knight Sr., 55, died Tuesday, December 5, 2000.
A native of DeKalb County, Mr. Knight was a son of the late Raymond and Ruth Brown Knight.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had worked as a tax appraiser with Athens-Clarke County for 14 years. Mr. Knight was a member of Faith Fellowship Methodist Church.
Memorial services were held Saturday, December 9, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Russ Carson officiating. The staff and employees of the Athens-Clarke County Tax Assessors Office served as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Knight is survived by his wife, Erma Jo Brafford Knight; three sons, Kevin Knight, Tacoma Park, Md., Philip Knight, Elberton, and Robert Knight Jr., Nicholson; one step-daughter, Mary Jo Talley, Monett, Mo.; one sister, Barbara Saxton, Macon; one brother, Bill Knight, Monroe; and two grandchildren.
