MR. DALTON
World War II veteran
CARNESVILLE - Oscar Junior Dalton, 74, formerly of Jackson County, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Dalton was born June 22, 1926, in Hall County. He was a son of the late Oscar Charles and Lottie Dalton.
Mr. Dalton was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was retired from Jefferson Mills, with 30 years of service, where he worked as a machine repairman. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Mr. Dalton was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Drake Dalton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 14, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Edward Patterson officiating. Burial was in the Nails Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Ricky Dalton, Carnesville; three sisters, Betty Jo Gulley, Eatonton, Rena Mae Wright, Social Circle, and Vader Craig, Kannapolis, N.C.; four brothers, Leonard Dalton and Billy Dalton, both of Jefferson, Bob Dalton, Marietta, and Jim Dalton, Kannapolis, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

MR. MCGAHA
U.S. Air Force veteran
CARNESVILLE - James R. "Buddy" McGaha, 60, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at his residence.
Mr. McGaha was born March 14, 1939, in Ware County. He was a son of Roscoe S. and Annie Maude Jackson McGaha.
Mr. McGaha was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had been employed with General Times. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 13, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Fred Heard officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Paulette Gorman McGaha; one son, Thomas McGaha, Athens; three step-daughters, Larri Gorman and Cheryl Kitchens, both of Commerce, and Paula Malia, Royston; four brothers, Douglas McGaha, Bogart, Eldon McGaha, Las Vegas, Nev., Sammy McGaha, Royston, and Tommy McGaha, Aledo, Texas; four sisters, Dolores Belk and Jeneva Coile, both of Danielsville, Frances Jordan, Royston, and Annelle Maxwell, Lavonia; and seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association or to the charity of one's choice.

MRS. WELLMAN
Housewife
WINDER - Mrs. Dorothy Kirkley Wellman, 78, died Friday, March 10, 2000.
Mrs. Wellman was born in Douglasville, a daughter of the late Benjamin R. and Grace Todd Kirkley.
She had resided in Winder for the past 15 years. Mrs. Wellman was a housewife and attended the Winder First Methodist Church. She was a member of the Barrow Medical Center Auxiliary.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 12, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Kenneth Brewer officiating. Burial was in Rose Haven Memorial Gardens, Douglasville.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Wellman; four daughters, Kathy Haynes, Snellville, and June Terry Shuman, Joan Terry Foster and Dorothy Jane Ridley, all of Douglasville; one brother, Floyd R. Kirkley, Hixon, Tenn.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

MRS. LORD
Commerce First Baptist member
COMMERCE - Mrs. Retha Nell Minish Lord, 90, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
Mrs. Lord was born March 19, 1909, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Gratt and Leola Benton Minish.
Mrs. Lord had worked as a sewing machine operator and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Morgan Lord.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 10, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Kent Cranford officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby Lord, Royston, Gerald W. Lord, South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Steven Minish Lord, Dahlonega; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

MR. TANNER
Jackson County native
GAINESVILLE - Woodrow Weldon Tanner, 60, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Columbia Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Tanner was born March 17, 1939. He was a son of Woodrow Wilson Tanner, Pendergrass, and the late Lydia Latrelle Murphy Tanner.
Mr. Tanner had lived and worked in Gainesville for the last 36 years. He was a 1957 graduate of Braselton High School and a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he was a member of A.T.O. Fraternity.
Throughout his professional career, Mr. Tanner served as a food broker with various companies, the last of which was Prime-Pak Foods Inc., Gainesville, as vice president of sales and marketing. He was owner of the local office of the Abby Insurance Company.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Mountain Creek Baptist Church, Pendergrass. Mr. Tanner will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include daughter and son-in-law, Joan Kelly Tanner and Pep Matus, Atlanta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sidney Wilson and Carol F. Tanner, Hoschton, and Victor Franklin and Jean Tanner, Brooksville, Fla.; granddaughter, Nina Matus, Atlanta; three nephews, Travis Tanner, Hoschton, S. Ryan Tanner, Dallas, Texas, and Jonathan Tanner, Brooksville, Fla.; one niece, Chelsea Tanner, Brooksville, Fla.; and one great-nephew, Owsley Jerome Tanner, Hoschton.

JEFFERSON - David J. Schwartz, 48, died Thursday, March 9, 2000.
Services were held Friday, March 10, in Arlington Memorial Park with Rabbi Scott Saulson officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Michelle Schwartz; two daughters, Abigail Schwartz and Sara Ann Schwartz, both of Jefferson; one son, David James Schwartz, Jefferson; and his mother, Mary Hollingsworth Schwartz.

MISS CAREW
Former JCES teacher
ATHENS - Miss Mardon Anne "Mardie" Carew, 62, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at her residence.
Miss Carew was born in Toronto to Marjorie Pooler Carew, Amhert, Mass., and the late Donald F. Carew.
She became a resident of Athens in 1969. Miss Carew was a graduate of Ohio University and the University of Georgia, completing a master's degree and advanced graduate studies in education.
She was a classroom teacher and educational consultant in northeast Georgia, spending 35 years in service to public education. Miss Carew taught at Jackson County Elementary School from 1991 to 1998.
Her involvement in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens was an important part of her commitment to the community, family members stated. Her caring concern for her extended family was pivotal in her life. She was dedicated to enhancing and strengthening her family's bonds.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 15, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include one son, Richard Climo, Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Marjorie Climo Shelnutt, Athens; one brother, Don Carew, Amherst, Mass.; one sister, Susan Carew-Rice, Highland Village, Texas; two grandchildren, Meisha Climo and Beau Climo, both of Sacramento, Calif.; eight nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Edith Thomason Carithers, 51, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000.
Mrs. Carithers was born November 13, 1948, in Winder. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Gladys Hill Wilson Thomason.
Mrs. Carithers was a homemaker and of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Lee Carithers Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 17, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson.
Survivors include one daughter, Tracie Carithers Tuggle, Jefferson; one son, Danny Lee Carithers Jr., Jefferson; three sisters, Linda Highsmith, Gainesville, and Dolores Dunn and Donna Farmer, both of Winder; one brother, Larry Thomason, Bogart; two grandchildren, Casey Carithers Tuggle and Dylan Lee Carithers, both of Jefferson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

CORNELIA - Mrs. Frankie Waldrep Ward, 94, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Ward was born January 31, 1906, in Habersham County. She was a daughter of the late Billups Waldrep and Florence Stewart Waldrep Edwards.
Mrs. Ward was retired from Carwood Manufacturing Company, with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Demorest Church of God for over 50 years where she taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School class for many years.
Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband, James Ward, a daughter, Myrtis Garrett, two brothers, Ralph and William Edwards, and four sisters, Claudine Harris, Essie Waldrep, Blondine Church and Vivian McEntire.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 11, at the Demorest Church of God with the Revs. Darvin Slaton and Johnny Wills officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with the Rev. William Cox officiating at graveside.
Survivors include one son, Buford Ward, Mt. Airy; one sister, Bessie Nicholson, Clarkesville; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
