MAYSVILLE - Lewis G. Gamblin, 75, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Mr. Gamblin was born November 14, 1924, in Union County. He was a son of the late L.E. and Hattie Lunsford Gamblin.
Mr. Gamblin was a U.S. Army veteran and had worked as a mechanic. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 29, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Crestlawn, Atlanta.
Survivors include one son, Eugene Gamblin, Atlanta; one daughter, Teresa Turco, Maysville; two step-sons, Larry Hill, Lithia Springs, and Jerry Noles, Peachtree City; two step-daughters, Jo Lynn Flynn, Villa Rica, and Brenda Mills, Maysville; and three grandchildren.

STATHAM - Collin Evans, 17, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in Oglethorpe County.
Mr. Evans was a son of Wendell and Shirley Evans, Statham. He was a student at Oconee County High School.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 27, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one brother, Drew Kinsey, Maysville; grandparents, Relle Drewry, Statham, and Margie Lord, Hoschton; and great-grandmother, Minnie Ruth Kirk, Monroe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Collin Evans Memorial Fund at the Peoples Bank in Statham.

Homemaker
DEMOREST - Mrs. Onie Irene Wood, 55, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Wood was born August 31, 1944, in Hall County. She was a daughter of the late Ray and Ada Bell Turpin Smith. Mrs. Wood was a homemaker and a member of Demorest Church of God.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 1, at Demorest Church of God with the Revs. William Cox, James Gunn and Wilmer Ivester officiating. Burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her husband, Guy "Cigar" Wood; one daughter, Gail Williams, Baldwin; one son, Jason Wood, Cornelia; one step-son, Shane Wood, Demorest; two brothers, Jay Smith, Cumming, and Bud Smith, Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Stella Smith, Greenville, S.C.; and five grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia.

MR. PURVIS
Retired textile executive
CORNELIA - Harry H. Purvis, a retired textile executive, researcher, poultry pioneer and entrepreneur, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his residence following a brief illness.
Mr. Purvis was born September 30, 1906, in Atlanta. He was a son of Scottish emigrant George H. Purvis and his wife, Mary Hardwick.
Mr. Purvis was raised in Rockdale County, East Point and Gainesville, then schooled at Bingham Military Academy, Ashville, N.C., and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He earned a degree in textile engineering from Georgia Tech in 1926 and began working for Callaway Mills in LaGrange as a statistician. In 1927, he began an illustrious career with Chicopee Manufacturing Company and the subsidiaries of Johnson & Johnson Inc.
Mr. Purvis worked as plat superintendent of Chicopee Manufacturing for 19 years, except for a one year period in 1940 when Johnson & Johnson sent him to Saġ Paulo, Brazil to help establish a plant and train workers there. In 1943, Purvis began to experiment with the weaving of Dow Company synthetic filaments. His first product involved a contract with the United States Armed Forces to weave mosquito netting. Following World War II, the demand for Lumite products grew tremendously. In 1946, because of his reputation and experience, Mr. Purvis was selected by General Johnson to establish a new division of the corporation. He chose a site in Cornelia where he oversaw plant construction and the training of a workforce. Mr. Purvis served as general manager and vice president of Chicopee's Lumite (a name he coined) Division in Cornelia until he semi-retired in 1959. He was soon involved in the study of rocks, minerals and wild flowers, hobbies that consumed his interest until his death.
Active in civic, church and social organizations, Mr. Purvis was a past president of the Cornelia Kiwanis Club and the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce. He served two terms as a Cornelia City Commissioner and for 12 years as chairman of the Habersham County Hospital Authority. In 1971, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Hospital Association. Mr. Purvis served on the Administrative Boards of the Chicopee and Cornelia United Methodist Churches. He was elected to the Board of Directors of Community Bank & Trust (then Cornelia Bank) in 1956, a position he held for 44 years. He also served as a director of Community Bankshares Inc., Financial Supermarkets Inc. and Financial Properties Inc. In 1997, Mr. Purvis was recognized by the Atlanta Athletic Club as one of its oldest active members.
The mother of his five daughters, Frances Baldwin Purvis, preceded him in death, as did a son-in-law, Robert B. Church III, and two sisters, Minnie Callaway and Alice Bryan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Cornelia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Davis and Dr. Robert Brown officiating. Burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Sallie York Powell Purvis; daughter, Anne P. Church, Knoxville, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Henry O. Ward, Gainesville, Sue and Dr. Edwin Speir, Athens, Peggy and David Eash Sr., Alto, and Franny and Dr. William "Bill" Robinson, Cornelia; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

MR. WILEY
Banks County native
COVINGTON - C.T. Wiley Sr., 78, nephew of Louise Smith, Commerce, died Monday, February 7, 2000, at Rockdale Hospital, Conyers.
A native of Banks County, Mr. Wiley was a son of the late Hurbert Festus and Julia Canary Bellamy Wiley.
He had lived in Atlanta as a child and in Covington for the past 18 months. Mr. Wiley was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines.
Funeral services were held Thursday, February 10, in the chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home with Dr. Alan Posey officiating. Burial was in Mellwood Cemetery, Stone Mountain.
Survivors, in addition to his aunt, include his wife, Evelyn S. Wiley; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ray Czentnar, Loganville; daughters, Elaine Tompkins, Covington, and Lynne Wiley, Loganville; son and daughter-in-law, Neal S. and Amy Wiley, Covington; son, Chester T. Wiley Jr., Alpharetta; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MR. POOLE
Retired carpenter
CARNESVILLE - Willard Walton Poole, 81, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at his residence.
Mr. Poole was born August 28, 1918, in Banks County. He was a son of the late Francis Marion "Frank" and Lula Jane Ward Poole.
Mr. Poole was a retired carpenter and a member of Allens United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, W.C. "Pete" Poole, and six sisters, Irene Atkinson, Vilee Poole, Gertrude Thurmond, Sue Canady, Willie Mae Andrews and Virginia Foster.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 8, in the chapel of B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel at Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, with the Rev. Ernest Ivester officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Sara Lee Garrison Poole; three sons, Jack Poole, Martin, Jerry Poole, Carnesville, and Mike Poole, Eastanollee; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy T. Coulter
Roy T. Coulter, 80, of Colbert, died Friday, December 31, 1999.
A native of Clarke County, Mr. Coulter was a former resident of Monroe and Jefferson.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy, and was retired from the University of Georgia Maintenance Department.
Mr. Coulter was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Ward Coulter, in 1978, and a daughter, Kathy C. Way.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 3, 2000, in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Greer and Curtiss Hammond officiating. Burial was in the Johnson United Methodist Church cemetery, Watkinsville.
Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Davis Buff, Loganville, and Sandra Arthur, Hamilton, Ala.; three sons, Tommy Coulter, Colbert, Danny Coulter, Sandersville, and Franklin Coulter, Winder; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

William E. Kytle
William E. Kytle, 67, of Hull, died Thursday, December 30, 1999.
Mr. Kytle was born in Stephens County, a son of the late Hoke and Vivian Busha Kytle.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean Conflict, and had worked with the Southern Railroad. Mr. Kytle was of the Baptist denomination.
Memorial services were held Monday, January 3, 2000, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Lee Smith officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Goedert Kytle; two daughters, Elayna Wikstrom, Ridgeville, Wash., and Rebecca Trotter, Athens; four sons, John H. Kytle and William E. Kytle, both of Colbert, and James J. Kytle and Paul Kytle, both of Hartwell; three sisters, Maxine Fricks, Kathleen Kytle and Janice Edmonds, all of Toccoa; one brother, John E. Kytle, Toccoa; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert D. McElreath
Robert Dennis McElreath, 49, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, December 28, 1999.
Mr. McElreath was a farmer and was a member of Community Baptist Church. He attended New Hope Congregational Holiness Church.
He fought a brave battle with cancer and held on to his faith in the Lord, said family members. He was a loving husband, son, brother and friend.
Mr. McElreath was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Hoyle and Geraldine Sexton McElreath.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 30, at Community Baptist Church with the Revs. Dennis Kesler, Jonathan Randall and David Strickland officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mike Dudley, Art Davis, Jeff Jackson, Bobby Harris, Kevin McElreath, Jerry Castleberry, Scotty Morrison and Paul Gwen served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Lynn McElreath; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Gearldine B. McElreath, Danielsville; brothers, Darrell McElreath and Dwayne McElreath, both of Danielsville; sister and brother-in-law, Diane McElreath and Joe Paul Strickland, Danielsville; grandmother, Ruby Sexton, Danielsville; father and mother-in-law, LeRoy and Doris Crowe; nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
