MRS. HANLEY
Artist
GAINESVILLE - Mrs. Lydia Banks McCrary Hanley, 83, a cousin of Edith Banks, Homer, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, in San Antonio, Texas, following a sudden illness.
A native of Gainesville, Mrs. Hanley was born December 3, 1916. She was a daughter of the late Rafe and Alberta Banks.
Mrs. Hanley attended public schools, with art studies as a special student at Brenau College (now Brenau University). She later attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans. Mrs. Hanley spent 1938 in Paris for special art studies.
She later opened Renaissance II Studio in Gainesville, where she taught art for 30 years.
"I will always smell the paints and studio," said her son, Richard McCrary, Duluth. "Throughout my life, she carried her paints with her."
Mrs. Hanley helped enrich artistic circles, including the Quinlan Art Center and the Fine Arts Department of Brenau University. In 1999, Brenau University conferred an honorary degree on Mrs. Hanley.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Gainesville. Mrs. Hanley was preceded in death by her first husband, Captain Thomas A. McCrary.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 20, at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Fred Jones officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to her cousin and son, include her husband, Colonel Paul Hanley, San Antonio, Texas; sons, Thomas Andrew McCrary Jr., Fairfax, Va., and Rex McCrary, Yelm, Wash.; one daughter, Jenny McCrary Trappmann, Key Largo, Fla.; one sister, Leila Banks Burwell, Montgomery, Ala.; grandchildren, Thomas A. McCrary III, Falls Church, Va., Kathryn Gravat, Tampa, Fla., Stephen McCrary, Duluth, Brandon McCrary, Statesboro, and Jessica Trappmann, Key Largo, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Thomas A. McCrary IV and Luke McCrary, both of Falls Church, Va.
Ward's Funeral Home, Gainesville, was in charge of arrangements.

REV. BRYSON
North Carolina native
DEMOREST - The Rev. Hershel Odell Bryson, 74, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Habersham County Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Bryson was born in Macon County, N.C., a son of the late Zeb and Margaret Watkins Bryson.
He had pastored in Rabun County and was a member of Cresent Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Bryson was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Ray Bryson, and a sister, Dorothy Bryson.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at Cresent Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Nathan Nix, Donald Fuller and Furman Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Worley Bryson; daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Kenneth Wigley, Dahlonega, Marie and David Eller, Toccoa, and Linda and Randy Carnes, Turnerville; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Lee and Drucilla Bryson, Mt. Airy, Wayne and Brenda Bryson, Randallman, N.C., and Clarence and Judy Bryson, Clarkesville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hayward and Marie Bryson, Clarkesville, and the Rev. Paul and Bernice Bryson, Demorest; brother, Neville Bryson, Clarkesville; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Paul Holt, Clarkesville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rev. Hershel Bryson Memorial Fund, 255 Bryson Drive, Demorest, GA 30535.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia.

MRS. LORD
Homemaker
WINTERVILLE - Mrs. Mary Brooks Lord, 62, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mrs. Lord was born July 6, 1937, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Walter and Lucy Ayers Brooks.
Mrs. Lord was a homemaker and a member of Family Worship Center.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 19, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Jeff Burt officiating. Burial was in the Talmo Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Rebecca Martin, Gainesville, Brenda Funderburk, Jefferson, Michelle Rogers, Winterville, and Melanie Hudson, Clermont; two sons, James David Cannon, Carnesville, and Michael Cannon, Winterville; two brothers, John Brooks, Athens, and Scotty Brooks, Pendergrass; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
Jackson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. SAVAGE
U.S. Army veteran
HOMERVILLE - John Verdell Savage, 78, formerly of Habersham County, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at Clinch County Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Savage was born in Habersham County, a son of the late John Thomas Savage and Bertie Mae Whitworth.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 23, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Paris Whitworth, Donnie Elliott, Curtis Woods and Autry Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in the Unity Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Anna Savage; two daughters, Mary Glenn Smith, Homerville, and Cathy Cunningham, Alto; five sons, David Savage, Hoschton, Randall Savage, Homerville, Tony Savage, Oakwood, Danny Savage, Cornelia, and Roy Savage, Lula; two brothers, Lavaughan Savage and Samuel Lewis, both of Winder; two sisters, Denise Gragg, Toccoa, and Lillie Mae Nix, Demorest; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

MRS. BIRD

COMMERCE - Mrs. Rosie Benton Bird, 98, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Bird was born November 17, 1901, in Banks County. She was a daughter of the late Wiley Benton and Maggie Ingram Benton.
Mrs. Bird was a retired seamstress with Blue Bell Inc., Commerce, and was a member of Rogers Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neri Esli Bird.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at Rogers Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Peters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Nell Segraves, Commerce; two brothers, Ollie Benton and Vernon Benton, both of Commerce; and several nieces and nephews.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce.

MR. CHESTER
Retired carpenter
NICHOLSON - William T. Chester, 82, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Chester was born August 24, 1917, in Johnson County. He was a son of the late Isaac Tillman and Lula Vaden Brantley Chester.
Mr. Chester was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Isaac Thomas Chester.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Dennis Kesler, H.L. Moore and Howard Rhodes officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Cathel Mae Palmer Chester; four sons, Kenneth Christopher Chester, Jefferson, Oral Chester, Comer, and Ray LaVaughn Chester and William Randall Chester, both of Nicholson; four daughters, Pamelia Jan Daniel, Catherine Phyllis Vaughn and Wanda Elizabeth Weldon, all of Nicholson, and Barbara Jean Wilson, Watkinsville; one brother, Harrison Chester, Virginia; one sister, Mildred Ollis, Atlanta; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

MRS. TANKERSLEY
Alabama native
COMMERCE - Mrs. Cora Elizabeth Tankersley, 53, formerly of Cumming, died Monday, March 20, 2000.
Mrs. Tankersley was born in Cullman, Ala. She had been employed at Corporate Printing, Cumming.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the chapel of L.W. McDonald & Son Funeral Home, Cumming.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Tankersley; daughter and son-in-law, Misty and Shane Kirby, Cumming; one son, Robby Tankersley, Commerce; one sister, Sandy Jeffries, Dallas; and one granddaughter, Taylor Kirby, Cumming.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Martha J. Milam
Mrs. Martha Jane Carson Milam, 63, of Sandy Springs, S.C., died Friday, January 7, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
Born in Franklin County, Mrs. Milam was a daughter of the late Chester and Ruth Glasure Carson and the step-daughter of the late John Alley.
She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College, Red Springs, N.C. Mrs. Milam was a farmer and a member of Mount Zion Presbyterian Church, Sandy Springs, S.C.
She was a former member of Hebron Presbyterian Church and was director of Christian education at Annie Linley, Varennes, Flatrock, Mount Zion, Townville, Nell Townsend, and Fairplay Presbyterian churches. Mrs. Milam served as elder, Sunday School teacher and president of the Presbyterian Women at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.
She also served as a firefighter, chairman of the board, auxiliary president and treasurer of the Sandy Springs Volunteer Fire Department, president and treasurer of the Hebron Historical Society, commissioner and secretary of the Anderson County Museum, president of the La France Elementary PTA and was a member of numerous Foothills Presbytery Committees.
Mrs. Milam conducted genealogical research, authored "A Dipper of Reflection from Sandy Springs" and co-authored "Hebron Presbyterian Church, God's Pilgrim People."
Services were held Monday, January 10, at Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Harper Milam; two sons, William Milam, Knoxville, Tenn., and Stephen Milam, Salisbury, N.C.; one daughter, Elizabeth Milam Lomas, Sandy Springs, S.C.; two brothers, William Carson, Commerce, and Roy Coker, Charlotte, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund, the Hebron Historical Society or to the Sandy Springs Fire Department Endowment.
Sullivan-King Mortuary, Anderson, S.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Eric L. Hewell
Eric Llewellyn Hewell, 40, of Maysville, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000, at Stephens County Hospital.
Mr. Hewell was born September 15, 1959, in Orange County, Calif. He was a son of Henry and Pat Kelty Hewell, Commerce.
Mr. Hewell was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was employed with American Wood Mark. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church and was an avid folk art potter.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 6, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Lisa Barber Hewell; two sons, Bradley Lamar Hewell and Travis Joel Hewell, both of Jefferson; one step-son, Brian Savage, Maysville; one brother, Kurt Hewell, Hollywood; and three sisters, Tracy Alexander, Denise Jordan and Priscilla Wofford, all of Commerce.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
