ATHENS - Mrs. Ruth Massey Cartey, 83, died Saturday, January 8, 2000.
Mrs. Cartey was born June 2, 1916, in Banks County. She was a daughter of the late Lon and Nancy C. Brown Massey.
Mrs. Cartey was retired from Macy's Department Store, with 30 years of service, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil M. Cartey Sr.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 10, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Tom Lang officiating. Burial was in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Cartey's nephews and great-nephews served as pallbearers.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Maurice and Rosana Cartey, Athens, and Phil and Cathy Cartey, Watkinsville; five grandchildren, Beth Cartey, Jenny Cartey, Ricky Rice, Mark Rice and Debbie Barecky; three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Former Maysville resident
FAYETTEVILLE - David Stovall McCalla Jr., 78, a former Maysville resident, died Friday, December 31, 1999.
Mr. McCalla was reared in Maysville and attended Maysville High School.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 3, 2000, at Inman United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dale Weldon, Doug Burrell and Dr. David Campbell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, John and Monica McCalla, Tyrone, and Paul and Sherri McCalla, Senoia; one brother, Charles R. McCalla, Huntsville, Ala.; one sister, Ruby M. Stephens, Decatur; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

CRAWFORD - Mrs. Lillian M. Combs, 40, died Sunday, January 9, 2000.
Born in Campbell County, Ky., Mrs. Combs was a daughter of Johnnie Clay McIntosh and the late Geneva Turner. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness denomination.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 13, in the chapel of Wise/Connolly Funeral Home, Winder. Burial will be in the Galilee Christian Church Cemetery, Jefferson. Jeff McIntosh, Steven McIntosh, Joe McIntosh, Estill Combs, Brian Strickland, Brian McIntosh and Bruce Strickland will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include her husband, Gregory Lee Combs; one daughter, Jennifer Ann Hoagan, Nicholson; one son, Estill Combs, Winder; four sisters, Rella Fay Sands, Knoxville, Tenn., Mary E. McIntosh, Nicholson, and Linda Lou Turner Lane and Jallie Candill, both of Cumming; three brothers, Franklin C. McIntosh, Nicholson, Kelly R. McIntosh, Versailes, Ky., and Jerry McIntosh, Marion, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wise/Connolly Funeral Home.

CRAWFORD - Miss Geneva Louise Combs, 17, died Sunday, January 9, 2000.
Born in Cobb County, Miss Combs was a daughter of Gregory Lee Combs, Typo, Ky., and the late Lillian McIntosh Combs. She was a student and of the Holiness denomination.

Grey Hill cemetery rites
COMMERCE - Charles Burney Autry, 82, of Commerce, died Monday, January 10, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Autry was born September 22, 1917, in Social Circle. He was a son of the late Willie B. and Lurlene Few Autry.
Mr. Autry was preceded in death by three brothers, Hoke Autry, Elmer Autry and Robert Autry.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 12, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ann Autry; three sons, Charles Autry, Monroe, and David Keyros and Steve Keyros, both of Commerce; three daughters, Mildred Lowe and Rebecca Peters, both of Monroe, and Barbara Robinson, Winder; one sister, Frances Autry, Sparta; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Elaine Crocker, 54, died Monday, January 10, 2000.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Crocker was a daughter of Ethel Gibson Slayton, Comer, and the late Matt Slayton.
She was employed with Baker & Taylor, Commerce, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 12, at the First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Rev. Warren Huddleston officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Joe "Arkey" Crocker; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Scott Martin, Commerce; granddaughter, McClaine Martin, Commerce; and two special friends, Mary Evans and Roberta Bolton, both of Commerce.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Commerce First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Glenn F. Fortson
Glenn F. Fortson, 72, of Hull, died Thursday, December 14, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Fortson was born June 21, 1928, a son of the late Tom Ed and Lois McConnell Fortson.
He was a retired insurance agent with American General Life Insurance Company and was a member of Hull Baptist Church. Mr. Fortson was presently employed with Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, as a funeral assistant.
He was preceded in death by spouse, Betty Fortson, and spouse, Louise "Bootie" Fortson, and a son, Scott Fortson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, at Hull Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Crowe and Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens. Eddie Scarbrough, Lane Collins, Mike Moon, Robert Sloan, Billy Akins and Wallace Davis served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Booth Fortson, Hull; one daughter, Susan Gravenor, Athens; three sons, Steve Fortson, San Diego, Calif., Mike Palmer, Carlton, and George "Butch" Palmer, Crawford; one sister, Hilda Strickland, Milner; two brothers, Ed Fortson, Danburg, and Jack Darrell Fortson, Colbert; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

J.C. McElroy
J.C. "Jake" McElroy, 84, of Danielsville, died Monday, December 18, 2000.
Born in Madison County, Mr. McElroy was a son of the late Ben and Susie Roberts McElroy.
He was retired from maintenance with the University of Georgia and was a carpenter. Mr. McElroy attended Bethel M Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Merle Booth McElroy, and a son, James Ronald McElroy.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 20, in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Revs. Ray Jenkins and Robert Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Bethel M Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. McElroy's grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen McElroy Sims, Danielsville; two sons, Troy Lee McElroy, Danielsville, and Gene McElroy, Jefferson; three sisters, Annie Sue Royston, Royston, Gladys King, Greenwood, S.C., and Florie House, Danielsville; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Paul T. Woody Sr.
Paul T. Woody Sr., 86, of Sylvester, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Woody had lived in Sylvester for the past 60 years. He was retired from the United States Postal Service, with over 40 years of service, having served the last eight years as postmaster in Sylvester. Mr. Woody was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Lawson Bible Class.
Graveside services were held Saturday, December 16, in Hillcrest cemetery with Dr. Tom Jacobs officiating.
Mr. Woody is survived by his wife, Mildred Rhodes Woody, Sylvester; one daughter, Carol Woody Armour, Cleveland; one son, Paul T. Woody Jr., Sylvester; one sister, Elizabeth Woody Putnam, Atlanta; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Grace K. Aaron
Mrs. Grace Kenney Aaron, 86, of Athens, died Friday, December 15, 2000.
A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Aaron was a daughter of the late Samuel P. and Georgia Kimsey Kenney.
She had made her home in Oglethorpe and Clarke counties all of her life and was a member of Attica Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years.
Mrs. Aaron was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Aaron.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 17, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. John Davidson Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Attica Baptist Church cemetery. Dean Upchurch Jr., Enoch Aaron, Matthew Toole, Stanley Toole, George Smith Jr. and Dave Dowdy served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two daughters, Jan A. Upchurch, Athens, and Christine A. Toole, Colbert; two sons, Joe S. Aaron, Hull, and J. Kenney Aaron, Colbert; one brother, W.D. Kenney, Athens; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
