MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Vivian Ariail Presley, 77, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at her residence.
Mrs. Presley was born July 16, 1923, in Banks County, a daughter of the late Omer Ariail and Hattie Strange Ariail Reynolds.
She was a homemaker and a member of Maysville Baptist Church. Mrs. Presley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. "Bob" Presley, and a brother, O.G. Ariail.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, at Maysville Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Stowe officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
Survivors include three sons, Lamar Presley, Larry Presley and Richard Presley, all of Maysville; two sisters, Mary Jones, Leslie, and Revelle Massey, Commerce; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MR. MCEVER
World War II veteran
HOSCHTON - Joseph H. McEver, 79, died Sunday, December 24, 2000, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. McEver was a son of the late Joe McEver and Cara Holland McEver.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing. Mr. McEver was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hoschton, where he served as a deacon and had received his certificate of a Deacon Emeritus.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 27, in Smith's Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Kenneth Brewer, Dee Dillin and John Mark Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mr. McEver is survived by his wife, Eudora McEver, Hoschton; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Gale McEver, Braselton; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Lee Attaway, Braselton; grandchildren, Lynn and Steve Mason, Lisa and Don Pubnik, Lindsey McEver and Laura Attaway; and one great-grandchild, Tina Gooch.

MRS. GRIFFITH
Jefferson Mills retiree
MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Asalee Griffith, 84, died Sunday, December 24, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Griffith was born May 29, 1916, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Newt and Sally Hix Smallwood.
Mrs. Griffith was retired from Jefferson Mills and was of the Baptist denomination. She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby Martin and Charlie Martin.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 27, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. Danny Adams, Ricky Baker, Wayne Dobbs, Nickie Peppers, Randy Satterfield and Cain Tate served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Joseph Griffith, Kenneth Griffith, Greg Martin, Kelly Martin, Mitchell Martin, Bobby Worley and Pete Worley.
Mrs. Griffith is survived by her husband, Harold Griffith, Maysville; three sons, Kent Griffith and Tommy Griffith, both of Homer, and Billy Martin, Loganville; three daughters, Mary White, Norcross, Dillis Whitmire, Maysville, and Betty Worley, Jefferson; 24 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

U.S. Army veteran
CONYERS - George "Ralph" Banks, 82, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at Rockdale Hospital.
Mr. Banks was born in Jackson County. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II in the Pacific, and was retired from Lithonia Lighting. Mr. Banks was a member of Conyers Christian Church and a member of the V.F.W. Post #77.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 22, in the chapel of Mann & Walden Funeral Home, Conyers, with Ministers Tom Plank and Bill Rollins officiating. Burial was in Green Meadows Memorial Gardens, Conyers.
Mr. Banks is survived by his wife, Elsie Banks; sons and daughters-in-law, Neal E. and Cindy Banks and George W. and Elizabeth Banks, all of Conyers; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

WINDER - James Chester "Chet" Varnum, 77, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Barrow Medical Center.
Mr. Varnum was retired from the City of Winder and was a member of Winder Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington Varnum and Deanie Anglin Varnum, and his wife, Lillian Varnum.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 26, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Bill Baggett officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Chester Varnum and Mike Varnum, both of Winder, and Russell Varnum, Auburn; one brother, Julian Varnum, Jefferson; one sister, Moutine Jowers, Augusta; and one granddaughter, Brittany Varnum.

DEMOREST - Mrs. Vada G. Taylor, 82, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at a private nursing center following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County, Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of the late Robert and Gladys Poole Ausborn.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist denomination. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Thompson, and her second husband, William Taylor.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 24, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Charles Black and Keith Allison officiating. Burial was in the B.C. Grant Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Diane Black, McCaysville, and Shirley Sims, Hoschton; three step-sons, Gary Taylor, Mike Taylor and Tommy Taylor, all of Demorest; one half-brother, Charles Ausborn, Toccoa; one half-sister, Carolyn Ausborn, Toccoa; 15 step-grandchildren, 18 step-great-grandchildren and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

MRS. CLARK

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLA. - Mrs. Ann C. Clark, 79, died Friday, December 8, 2000, at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla.
Mrs. Clark was born in Commerce and moved to the New Smyrna Beach area in 1970 from Marietta. In the 1940s, she modeled for Gaines Pressley's Hair Styling of Marietta and worked for Bell Bomber-Lockhead, where she designed and modeled the jumpsuits popularized by female factory assembly workers, referred to as "Rosie the Riveters" during World War II.
Mrs. Clark owned the Ann Clark School of Dance, Marietta, and later taught dance to military dependents in Germany during the Occupation. Upon returning to America in 1953, she worked as an administrative assistant for the Marietta Daily Journal newspaper. Mrs. Clark retired in 1983 as an account technician for the Social Security Administration, Daytona Beach, Fla., and was a member of the First Christian Church, Marietta.
Survivors include two sons, Phillip Clark, Edgewater, Fla., and Ronald Carlan, Talking Rock; three daughters, Wanda Phinney, Janet Bowey and Elizabeth Goodson, all of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one brother, Jim Cheek, Commerce; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Cody English, 11, formerly of Winder, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Robbie Black officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include his mother, Amy English, Winder; one sister, Amanda Martin, Monroe; one brother, Aaron Johnson, Macon; and grandparents, Jan English, Winder, Wayne English, Demorest, Helen Williams, Macon, and Blattice English, Homer.

U.S. Army veteran
DAHLONEGA - Harvey D. Parris, 80, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000.
A native of Blue Ridge, Mr. Parris was a son of the late George Calvin and Carrie Almeda Queen Parris.
He was a retired carpenter and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Lumpkin County. Mr. Parris was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ernie Lee Parris.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 21, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim Sneed and Garvis Kinsey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Parris; two daughters, Carolyn Marie Chambers, Murrayville, and Paulette Adams, Arcade; three sons, Jimmy D. Parris, Colbert, George A. Parris, Gainesville, and Jimmy E. Parris, Cleveland; one brother, Rastus Parris, Blue Ridge; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

MR. SPRATLIN
Mill official
JEFFERSON - Garnett Alfred Spratlin, 83, long-time Jefferson Mills executive, of 95 Westmoreland Drive, died Saturday, December 23, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mr. Spratlin was born March 19, 1917, in Clarke County, a son of the late William Henry Spratlin Sr. and Ida Baxter Spratlin.
He was a graduate of Martin Institute, North Georgia College and the University of Georgia, with a degree in business administration.
Mr. Spratlin retired from Jefferson Mills in 1987, after 50 years of service.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Jefferson where he had served as chairman of the Board of Stewards and was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years. Mr. Spratlin was also a member of the Jefferson Rotary Club. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club on September 2, 2000, and was recognized by the Unity Masonic Lodge with an award on January 18, 1997, for 50 years of membership.
Mr. Spratlin was interested in sports, especially University of Georgia football and basketball programs. He participated in local sports activities, such as the state track meet every year in Jefferson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, December 24, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Gary Whatley officiating. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson, with the Rev. Whatley officiating, assisted by remarks from special friends.
Tom Bryan, Gus Johnson, Hugh Kinney, Jim Bauerband, Henry Asbury, Jack Davidson and South Bryan served as pallbearers.
Mr. Spratlin is survived by his wife, Emma Nell Nunn Spratlin; one sister, Helen Spratlin Kinney; and a number of nieces and nephews.
