COMMERCE - Travis Simmons, 75, died Friday, January 14, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Mr. Simmons was born July 10, 1924 in Homer.
He had been employed with Garrison Brothers Lumber Company and was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 16, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Leroy Chastain and Tom Garrett officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Simmons; five sons, David Simmons, Samuel Ray Simmons, Thomas Elex Simmons and Travis Simmons Jr., all of Commerce, and Jimmy Gregg Simmons, Columbia, S.C.; six daughters, Julia Echols and Carol Parr, both of Danielsville, Angela Elrod, Homer, Shirley Samples, Hull, and Rita Seabolt and Belinda Simmons, both of Commerce; one brother, George Husley, Helen; 31 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

MR. CARLAN
Commerce native
DESOTO - A.B. Carlan Sr., 80, died Thursday, January 6, 2000, at Perfect Care, Americus.
A native of Commerce, Mr. Carlan was born June 29, 1919. He was a son of the late Count Pulaski and Therise Brooks Carlan.
Mr. Carlan attended public schools in Banks County, graduating from Banks County High School in 1938. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, with a BSA degree major in agricultural economics.
Mr. Carlan served in the 3rd United States Army Infantry 357th, 90th division during World War II. He was Infantry Unit Commander, Rifle Company in European Theater of Operations and was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster for Bravery In Action. Mr. Carlan was also awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster (wounded twice), five Battle Stars and the Victory Medal.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 8, at DeSoto United Methodist Church with the Revs. Emory Gilbert, Claude Fullerton and Jerry Lillard officiating. Burial was in DeSoto City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Nancy Sumerford Carlan; daughter and son-in-law, Kitty Carlan and Roy Fricks, Americus; sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur Buell and Paula Carlan, St. Marks, Fla., and William Lawrence and Susan Carlan, Monroe; two sisters, Bertha Mae Thomas, Jefferson, and Kathleen Pruitt, Commerce; one brother, Ulysess Grant Carlan, Valdosta; and six grandchildren, Arthur Buell Carlan III, Tallahassee, Fla., Sidney Frances Carlan, St. Marks, Fla., William Austin Fricks and Christopher Carlan Fricks, both of Americus, and Hannah Adeline Carlan and Jake Cobb Carlan, both of Monroe.

JEFFERSON - Mrs. Eleanor Prickett Burger, 89, died Friday, January 14, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Burger was born June 29, 1910, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Lovic and Bell Garrison Prickett.
Mrs. Burger had worked as a secretary and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burger.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 16, at Dry Pond United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Williams officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two great-nieces, Barbaranne Hammond, Jefferson, and Marcia Hudson, Forest Park; and three great-nephews, Christopher Head, Roanoke, Va., Michael Head, Wilmington, N.C., and Patrick Head, Marietta.

MRS. KENT
Hall County native
TOCCOA - Mrs. Emma Lucille Savage Kent, 88, died Monday, January 17, 2000.
A native of Hall County, Mrs. Kent was a daughter of the late Allen and Emma Harrington Savage.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Toccoa, where she served in the Chancel Choir and was a member of the Rhodes Sunday School Class, the Friendship Club and the Offbeat Band.
Mrs. Kent was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie I. Kent.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 19, at the First United Methodist Church of Toccoa with the Rev. Jack Lamb officiating. Burial was in the Holly Springs United Methodist Church cemetery. Chuck Hughes, Allen Hughes, Tony Kent, Bill Zanca, Kevin Boydston and Gene Price served as pallbearers. Those who served as honorary escort were Kyle Purcell, Andy Crawford, George Ware, Tony Smith and Jack Eldridge.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Hughes, Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Donald Kent, Cleveland; four sisters, Bonnie Brown, Ollie Henry and Evelyn Lipscomb, all of Maysville, and Louise Tolbert, Gainesville; one brother, Denver Savage, Maysville; and five grandchildren.

LULA - Mrs. Barbara Lee Southers, 73, died Wednesday, January 12, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Southers was born April 8, 1926, in Ohio, but had lived in Gainesville for many years. She was a daughter of the late Doris Sloope Blackburn and Turner Blackburn and Rex Ober.
Mrs. Southers was retired from Northeast Georgia Medical Center as a nurse's assistant and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Gainesville, for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Carl Southers.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 14, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Myron Leckie officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Gene Bales, Tobey Leckie, Jeff Nelson, Garland Wilkes, Mike Presley and Tony West served as pallbearers.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Ruth Moss Shupe, 92, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Alzheimer's Care of Commerce.
Mrs. Shupe was born September 27, 1907, in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late William Turner and Edna Cordelia Gillespie Moss.
Mrs. Shupe was a retired schoolteacher and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Shupe.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 27, at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Revs. Carlton Peters and Brad Wilson officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hardy, Commerce; four nieces, Sandra Purdom, Decatur, Lynn Bernier, Pelham, Carolyn Goddard, Maysville, and Virginia Beadle, Lake Wells, Fla.; and three nephews, Paul Garrison and Steve Garrison, both of Commerce, and Jim Moss, Danielsville.

TALMO - Mrs. Mary S. Tanner, 68, died Friday, March 24, 2000.
Mrs. Tanner was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Ernest and Ruby Culpepper Sorrells.
She was retired from Wayne Farms, Pendergrass, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Talmo. Mrs. Tanner was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Alton Tanner, a brother, Paul Sorrells, and a sister, Bobbie Nunnally.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 26, at the First Baptist Church of Talmo with the Revs. Paul Wade and Jeff Burt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Stewart and Beverly Tanner, Gainesville; one sister, Helen Rylee, Gillsville; one brother, Donald Sorrells, Talmo; sister-in-law, Lucinda Sorrells, Commerce; one granddaughter, Autumn Tanner, Gainesville; special nephew and niece, Robert and Kim Holcombe; and a number of other nephews and nieces.

CORNELIA - Mrs. Georgiana Dyer, 86, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Scenic View Healthcare Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 30, in the chapel of Komorowski Funeral Home, Cleveland, Ohio. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

MR. BRAY
Commerce native
CLEMSON, S.C. - Dillard W. "Sarge" Bray Sr., 73, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Commerce, Mr. Bray was a son of the late James W. and Lula Hester Bray.
He was a retired Army staff sergeant, having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Bray was the owner and operator of Clemson Outboard, was past post commander of the VFW Post in Seneca, S.C., and attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Bray.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 29, in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, S.C.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Morgan Bray; two sons, Dillard W. Bray Jr., Mauldin, S.C., and Randy L. Bray, Easley, S.C.; two daughters, Beverly Lois Kelly, Greenville, S.C., and Cathy Sue Atkins, Georgetown, S.C.; one sister, Helen Kempton, Forest Park; grandchildren, Michelle Kelly, Chad and Jennifer Bray and Maggie and Jackson Atkins; and one great-grandchild, Jordan Wootten.

MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Glinda Sue Shelton Scharnikow, 56, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Cobb Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Scharnikow was born April 12, 1943, in Carroll County. She was a daughter of the late Shuford and Estoria Tomlin Shelton.
Mrs. Scharnikow was employed with Crane Amusements Company.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 29, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Swayne Cochran officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church cemetery, Dallas.
Survivors include one son, James T. Farr, Lawrenceville; three daughters, Richelle Caylor, Austell, Felica Farr, Maysville, and Deanne Jones, Mableton; two brothers, Harold Shelton and Thomas L. Shelton, both of Mableton; two sisters, Jackie Brackett, Dallas, and Earnesteen Hand, Mableton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
