ATHENS - Harry Rosser, 80, died Thursday, March 8, 2001.
A native of Elbert County, Mr. Rosser was a son of the late Paul and Blanche Hall Rosser.
He retired from the University of Georgia as a supervisor, after more than 20 years of service at the Physical Plant, and was a member of West End Baptist Church. Mr. Rosser served in the Pacific with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Jordan Rosser.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Kenneth Rosser officiating.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Rosser; one daughter, Harriette Wild; two brothers, Ted Rosser and Phillip Rosser; three sisters, Pauline Davis, Janet Ruff and Linda Lewis; five grandchildren, Cameron Harrington, Kimberly Harrington, Stephen Rosser, David Rosser and Laura Rosser; and a great-grandchild, Ashley Harrington.

MRS. MASSEY
Retired supervisor
ATHENS - Mrs. Evelyn Lucile Massey, 88, formerly of Nicholson, died Thursday, March 8, 2001.
A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Massey was the daughter of the late Guy and Frellie McDonald and the widow of Leonard W. Massey. She was preceded in death by a son, Mac Haynie.
Mrs. Massey was retired as a supervisor from a clothing manufacturing company and was a member of Commerce First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Commerce First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hoyt Allen officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville.
Survivors include grandchildren, Margaret and Mike Sikes and Mitch and Jenna Haynie, and four great-grandchildren.

HOMER - Mrs. Eva Payne, 82, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Payne was born June 26, 1918, in Homer. She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Banks Memorial Gardens, Homer.
Survivors include five daughters, Jean Betty, Guynell Southerla, Mary A. Carlan and Janet Payne, all of Homer, and Carolyn Harris, Gillsville; one sister, Alleene Sanders, Homer; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

MRS. MOFFITT
Retired secretary
BUFORD - Mrs. Helen Frost Moffitt, 70, formerly of Barrow County, died Sunday, March 11, 2001.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Moffitt was a daughter of the late Wade and Anna Taylor Frost.
She was a retired secretary with the Chubb Insurance Agency. Mrs. Moffitt was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth E. Roell Jr., her second husband, Sam Moffitt, and two brothers, James Frost and Charles Frost.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Terry Tippens officiating. Burial was in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens.

WINDER - Jimmy "Mario" Holcomb, 43, died Friday, March 9, 2001.
Born in Fulton County, Mr. Holcomb was a son of the late Virgil and Ann Day Holcomb.
He had resided in Barrow County for the past 11 years and was employed as a detention officer with the Barrow County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Holcomb was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Flowery Branch. He was preceded in death by a sister, Raenell Holcomb.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Carroll Pruitt and Robbie Black officiating. Burial was in the Hoschton City Cemetery.

COVINGTON - Mrs. Cheryl Anne Sorrow Hawkins died Sunday, March 11, 2001.
Mrs. Hawkins was born November 7, 1959, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Betty) Sorrow, Nicholson.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her husband, David J. Hawkins, Covington; three brothers, Jimmy Sorrow, Duluth, Perry Sorrow, North Carolina, and Leslie Sorrow, Athens; one sister, Melanie Sorrow, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

MR. HAGGARD

DANIELSVILLE - Tom Watson Haggard, 91, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Haggard was a son of the late Samuel Gray and Mattie Jane Lord Haggard.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Rogers Baptist Church. Mr. Haggard was the husband of the late Geneva Williams Haggard, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Hardman.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Carlton Peters and Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Tommy C. and Beth P. Haggard, Athens; son-in-law, David Hardman, Ila; grandson and fiancée, Jeff T. Barrett and Tanya Leach, Ila; grandson, James W. MISS COVINGTON
Former medical laboratory technician
ATLANTA - Miss Cleo Eugene Covington, formerly of Jefferson, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Crawford W. Long Medical Center following a brief illness.
A native of Jackson County, Miss Covington was a daughter of the late Lee W. and Beuluh Estelle Adams Covington.
She had worked as a medical laboratory technician for 50 years and was a member of the First Seventh Day Adventist Church, Atlanta. Miss Covington was preceded in death by three sisters, Inez Crocker, Mildred Covington and Gertielou Marlow, and a brother, Hoke Covington.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Taylor officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Lee Crocker, Mark Crocker, Jeff Gower, Bobby Gower, Buster Covington, Al Davis, Scott Mitchell and Horace Covington served as pallbearers.
Survivors include one sister, Willo Nell Blackstock, Jefferson; three brothers, J.C. Covington, Jefferson, Ralph Covington, Homer, and Horace Covington, Conyers; and several nieces and nephews.

MR. BRAY
Former county commissioner
JEFFERSON - Cecil Bray, 72, former county commissioner, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Bray was born March 31, 1928, in Greene County, a son of the late Ralph and Willie Roger Carson Bray.
He was a farmer, co-owner of Bray Bros. Trucking Co. and served on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners for eight years. Mr. Bray was also a school bus driver for the Jackson County Board of Education.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Jefferson, and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Bethany United Methodist Church with the Revs. Hulon Hill and Tom Lewis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Tommy Adams, Frankie Bray, Hal Dowdy, Mike Dowdy, Rod Dowdy, Ron Dowdy, Steve Dowdy, David Lance and Mark Hardigree served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Clabus Adams, Steve Magnus, Doug Waters, Slim Williamson, Emory Wilson, Fulton Wilson, Jimmy Wilson, Larry Wilson, Allen Wood, Shedrick Wilson, Don Elrod, Tom Bolton, Mathew Magness and Clark Waters.
Mr. Bray is survived by his wife, Mary Dowdy Bray, Jefferson; one son, Drew Bray, Jefferson; one daughter, Christi Mitchell, Jefferson; and five grandchildren.

MR. LAWSON
Retired correctional sergeant
JEFFERSON - John Newton Lawson, 65, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Lawson was born March 25, 1935, in Charlottesville, Va. He was a son of Betty Lee Lamb Lawson, District Heights, Md., and the late T.R. Lawson.
Mr. Lawson was the owner and operator of the Tasty Dog Cafe in Jefferson from 1972 to 1985 and retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections I.W. Davis Detention Center as a sergeant in 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS New Jersey from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean War.
He was a graduate of Gainesville College and Brenau College, with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, and was a member of the first graduating class of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy to be certified in Georgia as a law enforcement officer. Mr. Lawson worked for the Jefferson Police Department and for police departments in other surrounding towns. He also served as chief of police in Bogart before becoming a correctional officer.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, in the chapel of Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with Minister Tom Plank officiating. Burial was in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery, Jefferson.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife, Anita Lawson; son, Jonathan Lawson, Jefferson; daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Allen Scogin, Jefferson, and Janice and Don Perry, Athens; daughters, Jackie Carloss, Athens, Teresa Drake, Jefferson, and Kelley Lawson, Panama City Beach, Fla.; three sisters; nine grandchildren; and a special friend, David Fritcher.
