Ovied B. 'O. B.' Lumpkins, 69, died early Saturday, January 22, 2005, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Wrightsville, Georgia, and lived in Jacksonville for many years before moving to Glennville, Georgia, 15 years ago. He was a member of the Church of God, and was a retired dairyman and 'recycle engineer.'He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary L. Lumpkins; nine grandchildren: Susan Mae (Pete) Bennett, Debbie A. (Fred) Higginbotham, Elaine (Lee Gleaton) Munn, Dewayne 'Bubba' (Laura) Lumpkins, Mary (Roger, Sr.) Higginbotham, Linda (Johnny) Scott, Lois (Scott, Sr.) Murphy, Lynn Lightsey, and Sandy (John Hallow) Eibach; 35 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, at Doctors Inlet Church of God, 144 Old Jennings Road, Orange Park, Florida, with the Rev. Chris Oliver, the Rev. Randy Manning, and the Rev. Ronnie Surrency officiating.

Sweeter Hightower
Sweeter Hutcheson Hightower, 89, died early Sunday morning, January 23, 2005, at Bethany Home in Vidalia. The Treutlen County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a homemaker, and a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Roe Hightower.
She is survived by three sons: Ray Hightower and Louie Hightower, both of Reidsville, and Larry Hightower of Collins; one daughter, Wilma Jean Hutcheson of Reidsville; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with Bruce Conner and the Rev. Kenny Edwards officiating. Interment was in Little Flock Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wendell Thompson, Johnny Hightower, Herb Brown, Andy Thigpen, Anthony Hutcheson, and Louie Hightower, Jr.

Ruth W. Hayhurst
Ruth W. Hayhurst, 84, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and had lived in Columbus, Ohio, for many years, moving to Glennville four years ago. She was a retired secretary, a homemaker, and of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by four children: April Baumbusch of Hinesville; Jane Edwards of Baltimore, Maryland; and Roz Schneider and Sylvester Hayhurst, both of California; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 25, at Union Grove Cemetery in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

Lucille Grimes
Lucille Todd Grimes, ‟Miss Lucille,” age 82, died January 24, 2005. She was a faithful believer in the Lord and a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was born in the Gooseneck Community near Glennville on April 5, 1922. She was the daughter of Slater and Mary Stanford Todd of Glennville. In her early years, she served as a nurse’s aide for a local physician. Later, she worked at Ft. Stewart, Georgia, at the PX. She was a wife, mother, and a homemaker, living on Bonnie Street for 57 years. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Stanford Todd, and her husband of over 40 years, Henry Reese Grimes.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Delbert Owen Todd and wife, Sylvia, of Kelseyville, California; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gettis Adair Blocker and wife, Faye, and Jerry Reese Grimes and wife, Janice, all of Glennville; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty Grimes Mixon and husband, Steve, of Niceville, Florida; five grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, at Cobb Funeral Home in Glennville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 27, at Cobb Funeral Home, with the Rev. Oscar Rowe, Jr., officiating. Interment will be in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Thomas J. Carter III; Jerry R. Grimes, Jr.; Bradd Blocker; Jonn Blocker; Scott Blocker; and Michael Groover.

Betty Floyd
Betty Smiley Floyd, 74, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at her residence after a short illness. She was under Hospice care. She was a native and lifelong resident of Liberty County, and a member of First Baptist Church in Hinesville. She was retired as Chief Deputy Clerk of the Liberty County Superior Court. She was preceded in death by a son, Bill Floyd, and a brother, Billy Smiley.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Floyd of Hinesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Peyton and Denise Floyd of Lexington, South Carolina, and Mark and Karen Floyd of Hinesville; a daughter, Juli Floyd Usry of Sandersville; four brothers: Carroll Smiley, Sr., of Eatonton; Bob Smiley of Gum Branch; Neil Smiley of Richmond Hill; and Hugh M. Smiley of Brooklet; a sister, Margaret S. Floyd of Hinesville; seven grandchildren: Tripp and Sharon Usry and Jennifer Usry of Sandersville; Will and Brent Floyd of Lexington, South Carolina; Becky Floyd of Jacksonville, Florida; and Markie and Martin Floyd of Hinesville; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 21, at First Baptist Church in Hinesville, with the Rev. Charles E. Owens officiating. Burial was in Gum Branch Cemetery.

Bertha Thomas
Bertha Barrow Thomas, 91, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native was a charter member of Pineview Baptist Church, a housewife, and a wonderful mother and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus B. Thomas, and a grandson, Danny Thomas.
She is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Lyndal and Kennon Tatum, Joann Thomas, Wanda T. Lopez, and Anita Thomas, all of Reidsville; sons and daughters-in-law: Julian and Jackie Thomas of Glennville; Kerry and MaryLouise Thomas of Albany; and Ronald B. Thomas of Charleston, South Carolina; two sisters, Novidean Rowland of Jacksonville, Florida, and Ruth Crussell of Blackshear; one brother, Gene Barrow of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Ruby Lee Tucker of Glennville.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, January 22, at Pineview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jesse Browning and the Rev. Gregg Usry officiating. Ronald B. Thomas gave the eulogy. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Brazel, Ken Tatum, Kevin Tatum, Brett Thomas, Drew Thomas, and Jared Wicker.
Junior pallbearers were Kameron Tatum, Kitt Tatum, Collin Tatum, Trey Rutherford, and Ben Brazel.

Earldene Griffin
Earldene Swindell Griffin, 83, died Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Candler Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a homemaker, a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, a member of the Eastern Star, and former president of the Tattnall County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. E. “Bill” Griffin.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Elton Harrell of Glennville and Janet and Graham Lewis of Pine Harbor; one sister, Eloise Flowers of St. Petersburg, Florida; five grandchildren: William Harrell of Shellman Bluff, Deanna Beaver of Marietta, Griffin Lewis of Richmond Hill, Clair Harrison of Atlanta, and Catherine Larkin of Belvedere; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 29, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with Bro. Robert Kicklighter officiating. Burial will be in Glennville City Cemetery.

Joe Kicklighter
Joseph “Joe” Kicklighter, 80, died Friday, January 23, 2004. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart, Glennville Housing Authority, and Georgia National Guard. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Glennville VFW Post 8379, and A.F.G.E. at Ft. Stewart. He was a charter member of Tattnall-Evans Association, and a member of Glennville Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Trustee and as a member of the Glennville Migrant Ministries. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Walter H. and Mamie Kicklighter, and a daughter, Joan Kicklighter.
He is survived by his wife, Leeressa Kicklighter of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law, Bytha and Ronnie Durrence of Glennville and Linda and Terry Smith of Savannah; sons and daughters-in-law, Willie Joe and Peggy Kicklighter and Mark H. and Sandi Kicklighter, all of Glennville; one sister, Ruth Butler of Savannah; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 25, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating. Burial was in Glennville Memorial Gardens.

Mary Ragsdale
Mary Ella Thompson Ragsdale, 93, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina. The Bulloch County native had lived in Ft. Pierce, Florida, for 30 years before moving to Glennville in 1985. She was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Rimes and Emma Kelley.
She is survived by one daughter, Dana Kay Flanagan of Conway, South Carolina; two sons, Elmo Ragsdale, Jr., of Marietta and Stanton Lowe Ragsdale of Glennville; one sister, Eloise Parker of Calhoun Falls, South Carolina; Elizabeth Johns of California; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 23, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial was in New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County.

Wynette Portman
Wynette Kennedy Portman, 48, died January 25, 2004. She was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections, and a native of Reidsville, Georgia.
A memorial service will be held in the Kellett Chapel at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Road, Atlanta, Georgia, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Februa ry 1.

She is survived by her husband, Gregory Portman; parents, Margaret and Roger Kennedy, Sr.; and brothers, Roger Kennedy, Jr., and Mitchell Kennedy; one nephew; and two nieces.

Richard Howard
Richard D. Howard, 71, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004. The Selma, Virginia, native had lived in the Glennville area for the past 23 years, and was retired from the U. S. Army as a master sergeant after 27 years of service. He was a Vietnam veteran where he received the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and several other medals and awards. He loved woodworking in his retirement years.
He is survived by his wife, Hermine Howard of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law: Sonya and Mitch Schiffman of North Logan, Utah; Debbie and Ben Auxier of Orem, Utah; Tonya and Steve Knight and Georgia and Jeff Weathers of Glennville; Tascha and Sam Eure of Yorktown, Virginia; Blaze and Jeff Logue of Lancaster, Ohio; one son, Richard Howard, Jr., of Glennville; sisters and brothers-in-law: Janie and Harold Dewitt of Dunnellon, Florida; Joyce and Eugene McCool of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Anne and Roy Ferguson of Cambridge, Maryland; brothers and sister-in-law, Reginald and Pat Howard and Douglas Howard, all of Gambrills, Maryland; 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 24, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with full military honors. Burial was private.

Basil Sartin
Basil L. Sartin, 56, died Sunday, January 25, 2004, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Virginia native had lived in the Glennville area for the past eight months. He was a retired truck driver, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Jack and Lucy Sartin; and brothers, Joel “Punkin” and J. W. Sartin.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Hinson of Glennville, Georgia; daughters: Tina Greenway of Roanoke, Virginia; and Rebecca Sartin and Carrie Sue Williams, both of Daytona Beach, Florida; sisters: Margaret Cree Weis and Mary J. Sartin, both of Salem, Virginia; Ruth N. Stafford, Hetti E. Skeen, and Linda M. Craft, all of Roanoke, Virginia; and Dream K. Page of Troutville, Virginia; brothers: Calvin H. Sartin of Rock Creek, Virginia; Alvin L. Sartin of Salem, Virginia; and Donald D. Sartin of Rocky Mount, Virginia; stepsons and spouses: Steve and Brooke Hinson of Collins; Scotty and Sam Hinson; and Jason and J. J. Don Salter
Donnie H. “Don” Salter, 69, died at his residence on Sunday, January 25, 2004. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart as a sheet metal mechanic. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lester and Avis Salter.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Maridean Salter, of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law: Patsy and Mickey Stubbs, Dinah and Dale Wasson, and Debbie Salter, all of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law: Dale and Melanie Salter, Dean and Carolyn Salter, and David and Missy Salter, all of Claxton; one brother, Jerry Salter of Claxton; one sister, Loette Griffin of Claxton; special aunts, Betty Bacon and Lucy Parmenter, both of Glennville; a special cousin, Becky Burkhalter of Claxton; grandchildren: Michael, Melanie, Mandy, Daniel, Candice, Little Dean, Amanda, Blair, and Robin; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Haire officiating. Burial was in Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors.
