Sibyl P. Dent
Sibyl Padgett Dent, 82, of Reisterstown, Maryland, died Sunday, February 29, 2004, at her home. Born March 23, 1921, in Glennville, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Ivey and Miriam Brown Padgett. She was the wife of the late Don J. Dent, Sr., who died in 1988. She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She was a volunteer for the Maryland State Department of Health and Hygiene as a home care provider. She was a volunteer at the Reisterstown Public Library, and an avid bowler for many years.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel L. and Mary Dent of Jacksonville, Florida, and Don Jr. and LouAnn Dent of Marriottsville; daughters and sons-in-law: Cathy and Bill Smith of Pasadena, Maryland, and Mary E. and John Sharff of Tallahassee, Florida, and daughter, Deborah Dent of Berkley Springs, West Virginia; 13 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by siblings: the late Hugh Padgett, Jewett Padgett, and Joan Woods.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, Maryland. Interment will be private.

Thomas Kicklighter, Sr.
Thomas “Freddy” Kicklighter, Sr., widower of Miriam Hodges Kicklighter, died February 21, 2004. Born May 27, 1917, in Tattnall County, Georgia, Mr. Kicklighter was the son of the late Thomas Dancy and Ida Inez Downs Kicklighter. He was retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, and also retired as a general contractor in the housing industry. He served as a State Constable, was a Marine veteran, and attended Charleston Heights Baptist Church. He was a 32-degree Mason and a life member of Hammerton Masonic Lodge No. 332, a member of the Scottish Rite, Omar Shrine Temple, and past Grand Royal Patron of South Carolina Order of Amarenth. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Perry Kicklighter and Talf Kicklighter, and one sister, Nethera K. Smith.
He is survived by a son, Thomas F. Kicklighter, Jr., of North Charleston; a daughter, Gail Elizabeth Meyer of James Island; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 23, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel, Charleston, South Carolina. Interment was in Carolina Memorial Gardens, Charleston, South Carolina.

Curtis Harrelson
Curtis Harrelson, 66, died Friday evening, February 27, 2004, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all his life. He was retired from Tattnall Auto Parts, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Hutcheson Harrelson.
He is survived by two sons, Jeffery Harrelson and Gary Harrelson, both of Reidsville; one sister, Arlue Fowler of Reidsville; three grandchildren: Curtis Eugene Harrelson, Dewayne Harrelson, and Lacy Harrelson.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 1, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Calvin Durrence officiating. Interment was in Little Flock Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Kirkley, Carl Burkhalter, Rodney Hutcheson, Allan Hamilton, Rocky Hutcheson, and Lonnie Hutcheson.

Richard J. Hightower
Richard J. Hightower, 61, died Friday evening, February 27, 2004, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. The Polk County native had lived in Reidsville the past 24 years. He was retired from Georgia State Prison, and retired from the U. S. Army. He was also a Vietnam veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Hightower of Reidsville; one son, Richard Nathan Hightower of Reidsville; one brother, Jimmy Hightower; and one niece, Michelle Eaton of North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 1, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron and the Rev. Spencer Britt officiating. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery, with full military honors.

Sue Floyd
Sue Floyd, 80, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after a long illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Liberty County. She was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart, and previously worked at the dental facility. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hinesville. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Floyd, Sr.
She is survived by one son, Jack Floyd, Jr., of Hinesville; one sister, Gerry Brewton of Beaufort, South Carolina; one brother, C. K. “Chuck” Hammock of Highland, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Jacque Sue Wright of Phenix City, Alabama, and E. J. Floyd of Hinesville; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 27, at Carter Funeral Home Oglethorpe Chapel, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

Dian C. Fields
Dian Casteen Fields, 46, died Saturday, February 28, 2004, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. She was reared in Glennville, Georgia, and resided in Newnan, Georgia. She was formerly employed by Williams Lumber Company. She loved horses, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors.
She is survived by her husband, Grady Fields of Newnan; one daughter, Ashley Fields of Newnan; one stepdaughter, Michelle Fields of Newnan; two stepsons, Donald Fields and Robbie Fields of Newnan; her parents, Ed and Emmie Casteen of Glennville; four sisters: Eleonore Bailey of Milledgeville; Patricia Driggers of Houma, Louisiana; Debra Dubberly of Glennville; and Alicia Stanley of Lyons; one brother, Dirk Casteen of Hagan; and one grandchild.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating. Burial was private.

Ivy H. Johnson, Sr.
Ivy Henry Johnson, Sr., 83, died February 26, 2004, at his home. Born on August 16, 1920, in Ludowici, Georgia, he was the son of the late Charles Douglas Johnson and Louisa Johnson. He was educated in the public school system of Long County. At a young age, he joined Macedonia Baptist Church. Later in life, he moved his membership to St. Thomas Missionary Baptist where he served faithfully until his calling home. He met and later married Laura Mae Smith, and from that union, they reared 17 children.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Laura Mae Johnson; eight sons: Ivy Henry Johnson, Jr., of Atlanta; Tommy Lee Johnson (Reena) of Atlanta; Al Harris Nesbit (Rita) of Ft. Washington, Maryland; Prentis Johnson of Reidsville, Georgia; James E. Smith, Sr. (Elaine), of Columbus, Georgia; Navey Johnson (Patricia) of Ludowici; Walter A. Johnson (Teresa) of Gray, Georgia; and Tony J. Johnson (Paulette) of Homestown, Georgia; nine daughters: Verneda Scott (Thomas) of Jesup; Letha Mae Smith of Atlanta; Marvylin Perry of Columbus, Georgia; Kizzie Mae Spearman (Ernest) of Jesup; Janie L. Johnson (Willie) of Glennville; Gwendolyn Johnson of Glennville; Angela D. Johnson-Burgess (Anthony) of Augusta; Debra A. Phillips (Ray A.) of Hinesville; and Sabrina L. Johnson of Hinesville; one niece, Lula Johnson Levant of Glennville; 50 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and several in-laws, close relatives, and dear friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church in Ludowici. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Brantley Taylor
Brantley Taylor, 80, died Monday afternoon, March 1, 2004, at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. The Screven County native had lived in Reidsville for many years. He was a retired Commercial Agent for the CVS Railroad. He was a U. S. Army veteran, and a member of Reidsville Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Rooks Taylor of Reidsville; one sister, Agnes Lafond of Gordon, Georgia; four godchildren: Natalie Nail of Vidalia; and Kay-Lyn Tatum, Kameron Tatum, and Tyler Trull, all of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Miller and the Rev. Marion Patton officiating. Interment was in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tracy Johnson, David Moxley, Ricky Trull, Kenneth Youngblood, Winton Johnson, and Ken Tatum.

Billy Ray
William A. “Billy” Ray, 71, died Saturday, February 14, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born in Tattnall County, he had lived in Chatham County for the past 51 years. He retired from Union Camp after 36 years of service, was a lifetime member of Local 407, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a charter member of the West Chatham Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his parents, Elirse S. and Zanada Durrence Ray; a son, Brian William Ray; and a sister, Anne Ray Waters.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jewette Fort Ray of Pooler; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy Ray of Savannah and Bruce and Tina Ray of Pooler; six grandchildren: Michelle Gibbs, Brian Ray, Harley Ray, Austin Ray, Jason Ray, and Brent Ray; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Gibbs and Jason Ray, Jr.; one brother, Maurice Ray of Bloomingdale; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 16, in the chapel of Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. David Stanford officiated.
Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia.

Jesse Merritt, 55, died Saturday, February 25, 2006, at his residence. The Florida native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Merritt.
He is survived by a son, Jess Merritt of Ocala, Florida; two daughters, Tabitha Merritt and Daphane Merritt, both of Lakeland, Florida; a brother, Roger Dale Merritt of Hampton, South Carolina; four sisters: Christine Bland, Sandra Nell Arnold, and Nadine Driggers, all of Reidsville, and Marie Pearson of Florida; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery in Toombs County, with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating.

Lindy Barnard
Belinda "Lindy" Barnard, 56, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at her residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all her life. She was retired from Glennville Lingerie Factory, and a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Ena Barnard.
She is survived by sisters and brother-in-law, Bobbie Kicklighter and Suzanne and Herman Gordy, all of Jesup; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Essie Ruth Barnard of Glennville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Miller officiating. Burial was in Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Denver Barrow, Glenn Smith, Robert Dubberly, Fred Dubberly, Jerome Lynn, Bill Lynn, Arlease Lynn, and LeRoy Purcell.

Janie Ruth Blocker
Janie Ruth Blocker passed away February 26, 2006, with family and friends by her side.
Born Janie Ruth Anderson on September 6, 1914, in Tattnall County Georgia, she married Zedra Blocker, also of Tattnall County. They moved to the Brunswick area during the earlier shipyard days to start a new life. She was the longtime owner and operator of the Georgia and Florida Market on Norwich Street in the 50s and 60s and was a longtime member of Pine Haven Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Zedra Blocker; a son, Clarance; and a daughter, Eloise.
She is survived by five children: Virginia Stewart of Newport News, Virginia; Linda and David Hunter and Sylvia and the Rev. Charles Smith of Brunswick; Sue and the Rev. Bob Corley of Austin; and Butch and Carole Blocker of St. Simons Island; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at Pine Haven Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Sammy Chancey.
Active pallbearers were Pete Carter; Chris Dillman; Billy Branch; Clarke Wiggins, Jr.; Darrell Crosby; Lloyd Douglas; Sam Copeland; and Ken Gray.
Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Men's and Senior Ladies' Sunday School class at Pine Haven. Burial was in Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jearl Blocker, 70, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born in Tattnall County, and had several friends in Glennville.
He is survived by his wife, Ora Lee; two sons, Tony Blocker of Callahan, Florida, and Richard Blocker of Atlanta; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Blocker of Jacksonville; and two sisters, Onell Barnard and Emily Hammock, both of Glennville.
A private funeral was held at Riverside Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida.
Maxine Toward
Maxine Toward, 79, died Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. The Toombs County native had been a resident at Tattnall Health Care Center for the past two years.
Her cremains will be buried in the Braddy Family Center in Montgomery County.
