E. B. Register
E. B. Register died Thursday morning, March 10, 2005. He was born July 14, 1915, in Homerville, Georgia, to Elbert B. Register and Addie Dame Register. He grew up there and graduated from Homerville High School in 1932 and from Georgia National College in 1933. He was a graduate of International Correspondence School and many courses in banking and finance. He met DeWeese Thomas while serving the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Reidsville during the mid-30s. They were married in August, 1936.
He began his working career (after leaving the CCC in 1936) with Washington Sales Company in North Carolina. He returned to Reidsville in 1938 and worked for the Georgia State Prison until 1939 when he came to The Tattnall Bank as a bookkeeper. He was then employed in the banking industry in Savannah, Tifton, and Claxton, becoming a Georgia Department of Banking and Finance bank examiner in 1944. He returned to The Tattnall Bank in 1939 and remained until his death, working in every department in the Bank. He was elected Executive Vice President, CEO, and Director in 1946 and then became President and Chairman of the Board in 1973 until the present. During this time, he also was owner and operator of Reidsville Insurance Agency, was City Clerk for the City of Reidsville, a City Recorder’s Court Judge, a tax accountant, and a cattle farmer. He also served on the Boards for Southeastern Technical College, Pinewood Christian Academy, and Georgia Board of Corrections.
He was involved in many civic organizations over the years, and his willingness to work and attention to detail were evident not only in Tattnall County but statewide. He was affiliated with the Rising Sun Lodge, Woodmen of the World, Charter Member of Reidsville Lions Club, Tattnall County Hospital Authority, Tattnall County Development Authority, Reidsville and Tattnall Chambers of Commerce, Sons of the American Revolution, and Reidsville’s Grand Rascals (RGR). He was involved in sports in high school, the CCC camp, and his early life, playing on football, basketball, baseball, tennis, boxing, and track teams.
With all the civic honors, closest to his heart was his membership at Reidsville Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, Baptist Training Union Director, and Treasurer. He also served as Treasurer for the Tattnall-Evans Baptist Association.
He was preceded in death by his only son, E. Bert Register, Jr., in 1999. He has been an inspiration and guiding light to many over the years and will leave a legacy of love and laughter to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of over 68 years, DeWeese Register; two grandsons, E. Bert Register III of Reidsville and Michael T. Register of Tampa, Florida; two great-grandchildren of Tampa, Florida; and his employees of The Tattnall Bank, the majority who have been there many years.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at Reidsville Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Sterling Bargeron, who was not only his pastor for many years but a personal friend as well.
Active pallbearers were Ray Blount; George Jones; W. Louie Smith, Sr.; Neil Rogers; Glen Cheney; and Len Hauss.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Sang W. Oh, Deacons of Reidsville Baptist Church, members of the E. B. Register Sunday School Class at Reidsville Baptist Church, Directors of The Tattnall Bank, and members of the RGR Club.

Gwendolyn Smith
Gwendolyn Jones Smith, 76, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Toombs County native was a member of Glennville United Methodist Church where she had served in numerous capacities. She was also a retired teacher, and was a member/officer of Delta Kappa Gamma, Georgia Association of Educators, and the Tattnall County Retired Educators.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert, Sr., and Bessie Alexander Jones.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Maxwell Smith of Glennville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Celia and Wayne Anthony of Memphis, Tennessee; Sylvia and Judd Bailey of Hartwell; and Laura and Kerry Allen of Bonaire; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Phyllis Smith and Daniel and Tabitha Smith of Glennville; two brothers, Roy A. Jones of St. Louis, Missouri, and Herbert Jones, Jr., of Rincon; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 11, at Glennville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Posey officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dennis Stanfield, Dorsey Thompson, Mike Mulligan, Bran Thompson, Eddie Durrence, and Wayne Sutton.

Eloise Creech
Eloise B. Creech, 85, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at her residence. The South Carolina native had lived in Glennville most of her life. She attended Watermelon Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Lucy Hutto Creech.
She is survived by two sisters, Lois Ray and Louise Rogers, both of Glennville; one brother, Joe Creech, Jr., of Portal; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Miller, the Rev. Jerry Knight, and the Rev. Wilton Ray officiating. Burial was in Watermelon Creek Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were David Cammack, Derrell Weitman, Avon Ray, Doyle Ray, Eddie Rowe, and Barry Cammack.

Ted Kicklighter
Ted Kicklighter, 88, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all his life. He was a farmer, a member of Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, a Deacon, and served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leila; a daughter, Nancy Kennedy; and grandsons: Jeffery, Ralph, and Mark Smith.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sondra and Jackie Smith of Glennville and Maurie and Mike DeVane of Waycross; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Carter Funeral Chapel in Glennville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder Paul Thomas, Mike DeVane, Daine Bazemore, and Grady Walden officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Damon Kennedy, David Brannen, Avery Kicklighter, Josh DeVane, Kenny Brannen, and Eli DeVane.

Evelyn Hattaway
Evelyn Coleman Hattaway, 89, died Monday morning, March 14, 2005, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. The Candler County native had lived in Collins until moving to Reidsville in 1955. She was a retired bookkeeper, and a member of Reidsville Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo “Red” Hattaway.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Annette and Ray Blount of Vidalia and Felishia Finch of Claxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Pat Hattaway of Reidsville; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Reidsville Baptist Church. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Eunice McNair
Eunice McNair, 82, died Monday afternoon, March 15, 2004, at Bethany Home in Vidalia, Georgia. The Candler County native had lived in Collins all her life. She was a homemaker, and a member of Collins Baptist Church where she taught the Fidelis Sunday School Class for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliot Joe McNair, Jr.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Clyde Lynn of Collins; three sons and daughters-in-law: Hugh McNair of Midway; James and Faye McNair of Collins; and Tommy and Rita McNair of Madison, Alabama; one sister, Jean DeLoach of Claxton; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, at Collins Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alan McCoy and the Rev. Ansley Jordan officiating.
Pallbearers will be Travis Lynn, Coyt Rountree, Rusty McNair, Randy Rountree, Barry McNair, and Christopher McNair.

Pat Kirby
Patsy A. “Pat” Kirby, 65, of Lafayette, Georgia, died at her home on Friday, February 13, 2004, from a long-time illness. At the time of her death, she was under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. She had been a resident of Reidsville for several years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Vera Tracy Langston, and two brothers, Wilburn Tracy and Calvin Langston.
She is survived by her husband, Ray Kirby of Reidsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Darlene Baker of LaFayette and Jeff and Lisa Baker of Chickamauga; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melissa and Robert Davies and Angela Kirby, all of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial were in LaFayette.

Myrle Padgett
Myrle M. Armstrong Padgett, 95, died February 5, 2005. Born June 2, 1909, in Montgomery, Alabama, she was a longtime resident of Glennville, and a member of Glennville United Methodist Church since 1946.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, A. T. "Tal” Armstrong and Maurice D. Padgett; a daughter, Rosemary A. Wofford; and a grandson, Brian Armstrong.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia A. Durrence of Reidsville; sons and daughters-in-law, W. T. ‟Bill” and Linda Armstrong of West Monroe, Louisiana, and Gene A. "Sonny” and Ellen Armstrong of Glennville; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law: Juli and John Zopf of Marietta; Carole and Jackie Hinson of Statesboro; Susan and Simmie Driggers, Jr., of Glennville; Lynn and Denver Taylor of Glennville; and Leisha and Kyle Durrence of Glennville; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law: Jack Armstrong and Jim and Crystal Armstrong, all of West Monroe, Louisiana; Jeff and Debbie Armstrong of Glennville; Allen and Lu Durrence of Claxton; Mark A. and Linda Durrence of Reidsville; and David Wofford of New York, New York; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, at Glennville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Steve Posey officiating.
Active pallbearers were Jeff Armstrong, Allen Durrence, Mark Durrence, Jackie Hinson, Jack Armstrong, and Jacob Armstrong.
Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Durrence, Kyle Durrence, Denver Taylor, John Zopf, Jim Armstrong, and Simmie Driggers, Jr.

Grady L. Gunter
Grady L. Gunter, 60, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Hospice Savannah. The Manatee County, Florida, native had lived in Florida for many years, moving to Glennville 15 years ago. He was a U. S. Army veteran, and a truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Gunter of Glennville; three sons: Waymond G. Gunter of Blair, South Carolina; John H. Gunter; and Carl E. Gunter of Arkansas; sisters: Bernice Mattson and Beatrice Nobles, both of Frostproof, Florida; Betty Ritter of Tampa, Florida; and Barbara Butler of Douglas, Georgia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gabe Gill officiating. Burial was private.

Ricky A. Gibson
Ricky Allen Gibson, 27, died Friday, February 4, 2005, at his residence. He was born in Augusta, and lived in Claxton most of his life. He was employed in the construction industry as a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Patrice Gibson of Claxton; a son, Joshua A. H. Gibson of Richmond Hill; stepsons, Alec and Aaron Durrence of Claxton; his mother, Teresa Dukes Ehrman of Claxton; his father and stepmother, Charles and Mary Gibson of Claxton; one sister, Amy Lott of Claxton; a stepsister, Caitlyn Gibson of Claxton; stepbrothers: Casey, Jake, and Jeremy Kirkland, all of Claxton; grandparents: Annabelle Thompson and Betty Gibson, both of Claxton; Richard Dukes of Pembroke; and Peggy Stanfield of Glennville; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Clarence "Pete" Davis, Jr.
Clarence deWitt "Pete” Davis, Jr., 86, died Sunday, February 6, 2005, at his residence. The Oglethorpe County native had lived in Glennville since 1995. He was a graduate of Monroe A&M where he played football and also played professional baseball in the Georgia-Alabama League. He was a retired truck driver, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, the Rev. Clarence and Maude Davis; a daughter, Patricia J. Davis; and a brother, Van Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Alice P. Davis of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law: Bill and Barbara Davis and Tony and Karen Davis of Commerce; Ken and Kaye Davis of Gainesville; and Michael Davis of Glennville; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann D. and Fred Gunter of Augusta; a brother, Joe P. Davis of Glennville; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville chapel, with the Rev. Steve Posey officiating.
Additional services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 9, at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens, Georgia, with the Rev. Fred Gunter officiating.

Rebeca M. Dashiell
Rebeca M. Dashiell, 42, died Sunday, February 6, 2005, at her residence. The native of Cuba had lived in Glennville since 1999. She was formerly employed by Brent Walker Ford, and was involved with the Tattnall County Relay For Life and Cancer Society. She was a U. S. Army veteran.
She is survived by her husband, Walter T. Dashiell, Jr., of Glennville; one daughter, Katrina Marie Dashiell of Glennville; two sons, Jason Lamar Dashiell and Shane Thomas Dashiell, both of Glennville; her parents, Francisca A. Pino and Antonio Leon of Hialeah, Florida; three sisters: Cary Martinez of Miami and Julia Morales and Ana Leon, both of Hialeah, Florida; and two brothers, Jorge Leon of Coral Springs and Arturo Leon of Lexington Park, Maryland.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 9, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Knight officiating. Burial was in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
