Marjorie Durrence

Marjorie Banks Durrence, widow of Layton A. Durrence, passed away Friday, May 2, 2003, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was a native of Glennville, Georgia, but spent her married life in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She was a homemaker while she was rearing her two children. When they were grown, she helped her husband in the family business. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She was best known for her contagious smile and wonderful personality that attracted everyone around her. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and the many friends that she made over the years.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Art Durrence and Kim Holtzclaw of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; one daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Avery Coley of Loganville, Georgia; one granddaughter, Kristen Coley Lewis; one grandson-in-law, Ashley Lewis; three sisters: Maridean Brewton of Glennville, Linda Waters of Savannah, and Delores Harlow of Waycross; three brothers: Larry Banks, Ed Banks, and Ned Banks, all of Glennville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the J. Mellie NeSmith Chapel. Burial was in Beards Creek Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in memory of Mrs. Durrence to Portsbridge Hospice Conyers Unit, 1374 Manchester Drive, Conyers, Georgia 30012.

Elliott Cobb

Elliott McGee Cobb, 68, of Cordele, Georgia, died Sunday, May 4, 2003. He was a native of Tattnall County for several years, and a retired engineer with the State of Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a member of Lakeshore Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Brannen Cobb of Cordele; three sons: Stephen Cobb, David Cobb, and Brian Cobb, all of Cordele; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at Lakeshore Baptist Church. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

John Moody

John M. Moody, 56, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003. The Tattnall County native was a carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Moody of Reidsville; four children: George Nash of Lyons, April Cox of Reidsville, Mary Jo Stevens of Odum, and Jewell Mercer of Valdosta; one brother, Doyle Moody of Glennville; two sisters, Frances Gordon and Doris Morgan, both of Ludowici; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening, May 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Home in Glennville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. John Gladin officiating. Burial will be in Glennville Memorial Gardens.

Marjorie H. Kicklighter

Marjorie H. Kicklighter, 82, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 9, 2004. The Baldwin County native had lived most of her life in Glennville. Mrs. Margie, as she was affectionately known, was a bookkeeper at Bi-Rite Grocery Store for 40 years prior to retiring, and was a member of Glennville United Methodist Church. She was a servant to all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Haven Kicklighter, Sr.; one son and daughter-in-law, Haven Kicklighter, Jr., and Sandy of Marietta, Georgia; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Blacker of Enterprise, Alabama; four grandchildren: Trey and Susan Kicklighter of Jasper, Georgia; Ty and Emily Kicklighter of Birmingham, Alabama; Taz Kicklighter of Marietta; and Allison B. and Carl Swanson of Palmdale, California; and four great-grandchildren: Clair Kicklighter, Leaston Kicklighter, Sally Kicklighter, and Sidney Kicklighter.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, at Glennville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Steve Posey officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Trey Kicklighter, Dale Kicklighter, Chris Grooms, Ty Kicklighter, Terry Waters, and Taz Kicklighter.

Virginia Hughes

Virginia "Lori” Hughes, 36, died Saturday, May 8, 2004. The Evans County native was a member of the Claxton High School Class of 1986, and graduated from Swainsboro Tech with her LPN license. She was of Baptist faith, and was employed by Gambro Dialysis in Metter, Georgia.
She is survived by one son, Roy Hughes of Claxton; one daughter, Brandi Harper of Claxton; her mother, Emily Manning of Claxton; one brother, Rudy Manning of Claxton; one sister and brother-in-law, Lara Manning and Tony Pedraza of Germany; a special friend, Jesse Wright of Claxton; and several cousins.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Bull Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to Gambro Dialysis Center, 325 Cedar Road, Metter, Georgia 30439.

Perry Lee DeLoach

The Honorable Mayor Perry Lee DeLoach, 80, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Evans Memorial Hospital. He has been the Mayor of Claxton for the past 34 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Claxton. He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club, past president of the Jaycees, and a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was past president of the Local Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was past president of the GMA in the first District. He was a salesman and a dealer/owner for Ford Motor Company for 35 years. He served two tours in the Marines during WW II and the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Holloway DeLoach of Claxton; one daughter, Catherine Powell of Claxton; two brothers, W. R. “Boss” DeLoach and Elton DeLoach, both of Claxton; two sisters, Jane Hammock of Claxton and Nannie Kate Denton of Hagan; one grandson and wife, Corey and Shelly Powell of Claxton; two great-grandchildren, Annabelle Powell and Andrew Powell, both of Claxton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 9, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Claxton, with the Rev. Craig Hutto and the Rev. John Carroll officiating. Burial was in Canoochee Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Luther Royal, Randy Mayfield, Jack Hill, Jack Tucker, George Kessler, Bill Callaway, Charles Sutton, Terry Branch, Don Sports, the Rev. Barry Clingan, and Waymon Moody.
Honorary pallbearers were First United Methodist men, the Service Sunday School Class, Claxton Rotary Club, and employees and Council of the City of Claxton.
Remembrances can be made to the American Diabetes Association, 5105 Paulsen Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405, and/or the American Heart Association, 7505 Waters Avenue, Savannah, Georgia 31406.

Coolidge Waters

Samuel Coolidge Waters, 78, died at his home in Gooseneck, Georgia, on Thursday, May 8, 2003.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen Harrell Waters; grandson, Ben Evans; two daughters and their families, Judy Waters and Stephen P. Carl; Joyce Waters and Kermit R. NeeSmith; Wendy NeeSmith; and Tracy, Alan, Justin, Evan, Lane, and Lauren Adams.
Other survivors include Prentice Waters, Von H. Waters, Wanda W. Phillips, Beach Waters, Debra M. Waters, Pat W. Brown, Katha W. Driggers, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10, at 4 p.m. at Cobb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Charles “Bucky” Strickland. Burial was in Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Waters, Scott Brown, Dr. Robert Waters, Wesley Waters, David Waters, and Norman Threatt.
Remembrances can be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P. O. Box 531, Statesboro, Georgia 30459.

Mildred DeLoach

Mildred Jarriel DeLoach, 88, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a member of the First Baptist Church of Glennville. She and her husband, the late Reese DeLoach, were the former owners and operators of the 301 Drive-In for years. She was a loving and caring wife and mother.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Linda DeLoach of Shellman Bluff and Richard and Paula DeLoach of Glennville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Andrew Battle; Glenn Hidberts; Henry Skipper, Jr.; Buddy DeLoach; Tommy Poppell; and Jason Poppell.

Sam Harris

Hunter S. “Sam” Harris, 85, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, at his residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Pennsylvania native had lived in Virginia for many years, moving to Glennville 12 years ago. He was a retired law enforcement officer, serving in several states, and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his friends, Tom Fitzpatrick and Quinton Rush of Glennville, with many other friends also surviving.
A memorial funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Morgan officiating. Burial will be at Old Cemetery in Wardensville, West Virginia.
Remembrances can be made to Pearls of Life Hospice, 13 South Newton Street, Claxton, Georgia 30417.

Burney Scales

Burney Mann Scales, 74, of Valdosta, Georgia, died Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2003, in the South Georgia Medical Center of Valdosta after a brief illness. She was a native of Tattnall County, residing in Vidalia for 37 years, moving to Valdosta in 2002. She graduated from Glennville High School in 1946 and Georgia Teachers’ College of Statesboro in 1950; married her husband of 42 years, John F. Scales, on March 24, 1957; taught English in Albany, Patterson, Baxley, Toombs Central, Robert Toombs, and the Vidalia City School System, and later in local adult education; and was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church of Vidalia. She was preceded in death by one brother, Durrell Mann.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Charles Clark of Hahira; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Irene Scales of Alpharetta; two brothers, James Howell Mann, Jr., of Columbus, Mississippi, and Marcus Eldred Mann of Glennville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church of Vidalia, with the Rev. Larry Rollins officiating. Interment followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Gibson, Steve Weeks, Jim Morris, Dana Stille, Tony Williamson, and Melvin Cason.

Mearl "Bo" Blocker

Mearl H. “Bo” Blocker, 51, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville after a long illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in Dacula since 1979. He was retired from the Department of Transportation, and was a member of Birdford Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hughes Blocker.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Barns Blocker of Dacula; children and spouses: Michael and Debbie Sneed of Maysville; Sam and Melissa Sneed of Flowery Branch; and Jason and Jessica Blocker and Travis Blocker of Dacula; two sisters, Janette and Jerry Howard of Ludowici and Janice and Harold Todd of Glennville; two grandchildren, Christopher Sneed and Becky Martin; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Letha Moseley

Letha W. Moseley, 87, of Tampa, Florida, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Ed Moseley of Brandon; a brother, Beach Waters of Charlotte, North Carolina; two sisters, Myrtice Kicklighter of Glennville, Georgia, and Lilly Woodward of Port Wentworth, Georgia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, at the Bel-Mar Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mrs. Moseley’s memory to the American Cancer Society or to the Bel-Mar Presbyterian Church.

Evelyn Moore

Evelyn Davis Moore, 78, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Dorminy Medical Center. She was born in Tattnall County February 18, 1925, to the late Sidney Joseph Nease and Olivia Oliveras Nease. She was retired from Shaw Industries as a machine operator. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church where she was president of the Golden Harvesters, member and treasurer of the Friendship Sunday School Class, chairman of the Flower Committee, former member for many years of the Food Committee, and former member of the Fitzgerald Lioness Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband and father of the children, Lofton J. Davis, and husband Howard Moore; and also four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two sons, Larry J. Davis of Fitzgerald and Dale L. Davis and wife Mary Ruth of Americus, Georgia; two daughters, Janet Williams and husband Riley of Adrian, Georgia; and Diane Dowdy and husband E. B. Dowdy, Jr., of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: John Williams and wife Sandra; Susan Channell and husband Chris; Jeff Davis and wife Becky; Cameron Davis; Brian Davis and wife Audra; Brent Davis; Jed Dowdy and wife Tiffany; Craig Dowdy; and Clint Dowdy; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Westside Baptist Church, with the Rev. D. Eldridge Beasley officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald.

"W. A." Willie A. Bacon, 82, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Georgia. The lifelong native of Tattnall County was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He was a World War II Army veteran, receiving the Silver and Bronze Star and the Oak Leaf Cluster; and a member of VFW Post #8379 and American Legion #95. He was a member of Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian A. Bacon of Glennville, Georgia; sons and daughters-in-law: Edward and Kathy Bacon, Kerry and Linda Bacon, and Kevin and Loretta Bacon, all of Glennville; five sisters: Dorothy Durrence and Claudine Bland, both of Glennville, and Willene Brewton, Frances Bouy, and Johna Lou Mitchell; one brother, Billy Bacon of Savannah; special friend Furmon Oxidine of Glennville; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Williams officiating. Burial was in Beards Creek Church Cemetery, with military graveside honors.
Pallbearers were Derrell Bland, Brad Bacon, Willie Bland, Dale Salter, Jeremy Bacon, and Clint Dasher.
Carter Funeral Chapel of Glennville, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.
