Mabel Baker
Mabel Barrow Baker, 74, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Glenvue Nursing Home. She was a lifelong resident of Glennville, a loving mother and grandmother, and loved to cook for family and friends. She was a Home Health Care provider, a homemaker, and a member of Glennville Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Baker.
She is survived by one daughter, Connie L. Ferguson of Glennville; one son, Ronald L. Baker of Glennville; five grandchildren: Trina Nall, Venus Reddish, Christine Dasher, and Joanna Thomas, all of Glennville, and Patricia Lee of Phenix City, Alabama; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Oscar Rowe, Jr., officiating. Burial was in Beards Creek Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rodney Paul, Danny Lynn, Warren Dasher, Elton Reddish, Jackie Anderson, and Keith Stanfield.

Junior Cowart
George Lester “Junior” Cowart, Jr., 76, died Thursday morning, July 1, 2004, at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all his life. He was a World War II U. S. Army veteran, and worked several years as a Correctional Officer at Georgia State Prison. He owned and operated Cowart’s Meat Market, and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Walleria Cowart of Reidsville; four daughters and sons-in-law: Christine and Eric Clark of Lyons; Suzanne and Ronnie Daniel of Covington; Wanda Jean and Clifton Kennedy of Savannah; and Cindy and Jimmy Bland of Glennville; one brother, Jack Cowart of Reidsville; three sisters: Ruth Tyson of Tifton; and Louise Spinato and June Clifton, both of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 3, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Julia Jarriel
Julia P. Jarriel, 97, died early Thursday morning, July 1, 2004, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Emanuel County native had lived in Tattnall County most of her life. She was a homemaker, and the oldest member of Collins United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston Jarriel.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Lucy Jarriel of Collins and Jack and Anne Jarriel of Aiken, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Joy Jarriel Luten and Brett Jarriel, both of Aiken, South Carolina; Phil Jarriel of Collins; Jennifer Jarriel Sands of Hahira, Georgia; and Mark Jarriel of Anderson, South Carolina; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment was in Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Sara Hyman
Sara S. Hyman, 86, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Georgia Baptist Village in Waycross, Georgia. The Keener, Alabama, native had lived in Jacksonville for many years before moving to Glennville in 1977. She was a retired librarian, a homemaker, and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hyman.
She is survived by three children: Craig Hyman of Summerville, South Carolina; and Pam Davis and Peggy Hyman, both of Douglasville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bernie Weaver, Joe Odom, Troy Rahn, Jeff Odom, Vernon Dasher, and Terrell Futch.

Diane Howell
Diane Howell, 43, died Friday morning, July 1, 2004, at her residence. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life until recently moving to Lyons. She was a homemaker, and a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Glennville. She was preceded in death by her father, Carlton Howell, and a brother, Gene Howell.
She is survived by her son, Dusty Hutcheson of Reidsville; her mother, Wynoka Howell of Reidsville; her fiancé, Kenny Conley of Lyons; a sister, Karen Hutcheson of Reidsville; a granddaughter, Haley Hutcheson of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 4, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Geraldine Odum
Geraldine Lyda Hallman Odum, 90, died July 5, 2004, in North Palm Beach, Florida, after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Odell Odum.
She is survived by one daughter, Suzanne Kirby of Jacksonville, Florida; one son, Michael Odum of North Palm Beach, Florida; two grandchildren, Shonda Meeks and Ryan Meeks; one great-grandchild, Britney Meeks; one brother, Gene Hallman of Macon; and one sister, Lorraine Hallman Rhoden of Ludowici.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville chapel, followed by graveside services at 11 a.m. at Pigot Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Talmadge Purcell
Talmadge Nolan Purcell, 67, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at his residence with his family by his side. He was born March 11, 1937, to Charles Labon and the late Thelma Driggers Purcell in Glennville, Georgia. He graduated from Glennville High School, and moved to Savannah in 1955 where he went to work for CSX Railroad. He married Jean Elizabeth Swords, his devoted wife of 46 years, in 1958. Throughout his life, he was active in his church, and, as a longtime member of South Gardens Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, chairman of the deacons, Sunday School director, Church Training director, RA director and leader, Church Finance director, Sunday School teacher, and the president of “Love in Action” Senior Adult Group. He recently became a member of First Baptist of Richmond Hill after retirement. He was also a member of the North Camp of Gideon’s International, a member of the Board of Directors of the Savannah Seaboard Systems Credit Union, past president of the CSX Roadway Union, and a member of the Railroad Retirees’ Association. An avid hunter and fisherman, Talmadge was a member of the Woodyard Hunting Club, Belfast Hunting Club, and Limerick Hunting Club. He was also an active member of the National Rifle Association. After working for over 43 years for the CSX Railroad, he retired to Liberty County.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Purcell; his son, Dr. Keith Purcell and his wife, Tammie Whiddon Purcell, of Rincon; his daughter, Tammy Purcell Hendley and her husband, Chris Hendley, of Marlon, Iowa; his daughter, Cynthia Purcell Silverio and her husband, Dr. Robert Silverio, of Irmo, South Carolina; his father, Labon Purcell of Savannah; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Beverly Purcell of Savannah and Charles and Camille Purcell of Waycross; his sister, Verdean Brannen of Savannah; six grandchildren: Kenneth Purcell of Charlotte, North Carolina; Michael and Kaitlyn Purcell of Rincon; Taylor and Summer Hendley of Marlon, Iowa; and Julia Silverio of Irmo, South Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in the chapel of Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home-Hodgson Memorial Chapel, with interment in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Roy Bazemore
Roy Bazemore, 76, died Thursday afternoon, July 15, 2004, at the Emanuel County Medical Center in Swainsboro. The lifelong Reidsville resident was an electrician, retiring from Canoochee Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). He was a U. S. Army veteran, and was a member of Reidsville Church of God.
He is survived by three daughters: Brenda Cruz Del-Angel and Vickie Colwell, both of Reidsville; and Sandra Cruz of Glennville; one son, Michael Bazemore of Reidsville; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Burnon Jarriel and Bro. Lance Bazemore. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Reggie Bruno, Willie Holmes, Willie James Smith, Keith Driggers, Larry Rhynes, and Bryan Willoughby.

Dewitt H. Jones
Dewitt H. Jones, 92, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native was a member of Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. He was retired from the Department of Transportation, and was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Anderson Jones.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Daine Bazemore of Glennville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Beverly Jones of Butte, California, and Delmus and Louise Jones of Glennville; three sisters: Vera Tatum, Eletha Tatum, and Janie Ruth Purcell, all of Glennville; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Cobb Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, officiated by Elder Mickey Harris. Burial will be in Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Annie Mae Oxendine
Annie Mae James Oxendine died July 3, 2004. She was born September 13, 1921, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, the second of three children born to Annie E. Brown James and Joseph Furman James. She was married to the late Willie Oxendine, Sr. She was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Keystone, where she served as an advocate for Christ. She moved to Virginia after her health declined to live with her youngest daughter, Felicia.
She was blessed with ten children: Mary Easterling of Columbia, South Carolina; Mr. and Mrs. James L. Hodges (Mildred) of Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Austin Conner (Anna) of Alabaster, Alabama; Joyce Sharpe of Indianapolis, Indiana; Willie Oxendine, Jr., of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Mr. Ahmad and Habeebah Al-Ameen (Lois) of Atlanta; Vicka Jones of Glennville; Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Jones (Sandra) of Tampa, Florida; Mr. and Mrs. Furman Lee Oxendine I of Washington, D. C.; and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Weathers (Felicia) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Mayers (Ethel Lee) of Tampa, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Irene James of Columbia, South Carolina, and Pauline Oxendine of Hinesville; 29 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A celebration of her life was held Saturday, July 10, 2004, at 4 p.m at First Missionary Baptist Church of Keystone, in Odessa, Florida, with Pastor Baron Madison officating. Interment was in the Garden of Peace Cemetery in Plant City, Florida.
Hughes W. Thompson
Hughes W. Thompson, 82, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Brian Center Inn on St. Simons Island. The Tattnall County native was a graduate of Glennville High School, and a veteran of World War II, serving as an Army pilot. He was a former owner of a hardware and appliance store in Glennville, Georgia, for 30 years; a member of Glennville United Methodist Church; and an avid fisherman. After his retirement, he moved to Shellman's Bluff.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Angelynne and Ed Tracy of Charleston, South Carolina; one son and daughter-in-law, Hughes and Ann Thompson of Marietta, Georgia; and three grandsons: Tripp Tracy and Andrew Tracy of Charleston, South Carolina, and William Thompson of Marietta.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Posey and Bro. Robert Kicklighter officiating. Burial was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Carol Ann Marion, 49, died Friday, July 19, 2002. The Greene County, Tennessee, native moved to Tattnall County ten years ago.
She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jim Tootle of Reidsville, Georgia; one niece, Erika Tootle, of Reidsville; and one nephew, Jeremiah Tootle of Reidsville.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, at New Lebanon Baptist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee. Burial was in the church cemetery.
