Cora Boggs
Cora Boggs, 89, died Monday, October 3, 2005, at Claxton Nursing Home. She was born September 3, 1916, to the late Dock and Mary Levant Boggs. She was a native of Evans County and lived in Claxton all her life.
She is survived by one nephew, Jeremiah (Gloria) Nunnally of Claxton; six nieces: Lavone (Thernell) Clark of Atlanta, Elizabeth (Earl) Brewton of Claxton, Bettye Nunnally of Decatur, and Martha Huiett, Alice Howard, and Lula Mae Adams of Glennville; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 7 p.m. Friday, October 7, at King and Sons Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 8, at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Groveland, Georgia, with the Rev. Dr. L. Perry McNeal officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Johnnie Mae Rogers
Johnnie Mae Rogers, 67, died Tuesday night, October 4, 2005, at her residence. The Toombs County native had lived in Lyons most of her life. She was a homemaker, and loved to fish. She attended Reidsville Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Rogers of Reidsville; four daughters: Betty Harden, Rose Conner, Crystal Rogers, and Johnnie Faye Rogers, all of Lyons; two sons, Tommy Bryant of Reidsville and Pete Usher of Lyons; four brothers: Hubert Padgett, Junior Padgett, and Roger Padgett, all of Reidsville; and Roy Padgett of Lyons; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 8, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment was in Hardens Chapel Church Cemetery.

Earl T. Tillman
Earl Thomas Tillman died October 10, 2005. He was born July 21, 1952, to Elder Arnell and Lula Mae Tillman. He attended public schools in Tattnall County. He was a member of First African Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Kelly Murphy (Regina) of Statesboro and Keith Murphy of Glennville; his parents, Elder and Sis Arnell Tillman of Glennville; brothers: Lamar Tillman (Carolyn) of Hinesville and James Tillman (Cynthia) and John Tillman (Angela) of Glennville; special friends: Barbara Braggs, Jaffayra Braggs, Kemera Braggs, and Januaria Braggs of Glennville; and several relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, officiated by the Rev. Martin Bacon.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Bacon, Charles Tootle, Gary Tootle, Joe Welcome, Randolph Wicker, and BoBo Cooke.

Betty F. Taylor
Betty Faye Taylor, 72, died Wednesday, October 12, 2005, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro, Georgia, after an extended illness. She was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, and resided in Glennville for the past 30 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lonzo Taylor of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law, B. J. and Jim Solano of Douglasville, Georgia, and Wendy and Bill Morgan of Evans County; one son, Steve Taylor of Chatham County; one brother, Ralph Flowers, of Dover, North Carolina; eight grandchildren: Crystal McVey, Samantha Beasley, Jason Derriso, Tracy Waters, Casey Lew, Jonathan Waters, Garrett Morgan, and Alicia Taylor; and three great-grandchildren: Kayla Beasley, Conner McVey, and Mora McVey.
A memorial funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ervin Smith officiating.

Elsma M. Smith
Elsma Morgan Smith, 92, of Jackson, Georgia, died Thursday, October 13, 2005, at Hilltop Nursing Home in Monroe County. She was born in Jasper County, Georgia, on October, 30, 1912, the daughter of the late Fred H. and Emmie Mae Holloway Morgan. She taught school in the Cork and Pepperton communities of Butts County for several years and was later employed by Harvey Hardware and the State Supply Company. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She was a member of the Double Nickel Club, a former member of the Retired Teachers' Association, and a member of the Sylvan Grove Hospital Auxiliary.
Other than her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence Morgan; a sister, Mary Lou Morgan; a grandson, Richard Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Marian Lea Reeves.
She is survived by her children: Angelyn and Gerald Walker of Gray, Georgia; Lindsey and Hazel Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; W. H. and Peggy Smith of Carrollton, Georgia; and Fredalyn and Marion Reeves of Jackson, Georgia; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters: Alberta Morgan Brady of Jackson, Georgia, and Dorcas and Harvey Pearson of Warrenton, Virginia; a brother, Otho Morgan of Jackson, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at Macedonia Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mark Powell. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Charlie E. Holloway, Jr.
Charlie E. Holloway, Jr., 70, died Thursday, October 13, 2005, at Tattnall Community Hospital. The North Carolina native had lived in Florida, moving to Glennville 13 years ago. He was employed at Rotary Corporation, and attended Glennville Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Holloway of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law: Nancy and Hugh Rakin of Yulee, Florida; Judy and Buddy Spradley of St. George, Georgia; Marie Coffey of Rutherfordton, North Carolina; and Teresa Holloway of Glennville; three sisters: Evelyn Hartsell of Raleigh, North Carolina; Ester Holloway of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Irene Knight of Lexington, North Carolina; one brother, Jessie Holloway of Yulee, Florida; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 16, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. F. M. Henderson and the Rev. Wayne Knight officiating. Burial was in Glennville Memorial Gardens.

Eleanor B. Hellams
Eleanor B. Hellams of Conyers died October 12, 2005.
She is survived by daughters, Patricia and Bobby Jones of Canton and Carol and Skip Miller of Decatur; a son, Gerald and Daria Lynn Hellams; a sister, Ruby Dean Harris of Lithonia; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Harry White Chapel of Scot Ward Funeral Services, with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Interment was in Green Meadow Memorial Gardens.

Charles R. Balkcom
Charles Robert Balkcom, 66, died Thursday, October 13, 2005, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah after a short illness. He was a native of Dougherty County, Albany, Georgia. He was a former member of the Reidsville City Council, the Georgia Wardens' Association, and Peace Officers' Association. He served over 12 years in the Army National Guard, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. He was a graduate of Reidsville High School, attended The University of Georgia, and received a degree in Criminal Justice from South Georgia College.
He worked for the Department of Corrections for over 20 years, starting as a correctional officer. He served as the Assistant Warden for several years, being named Warden of the Georgia Industrial Institute (now Lee Arrendal Correctional Institute) in Alto, Georgia, in 1970. He transferred to Montgomery Correctional Institute in 1972 where he served as Warden for six years. During his tenure there, he was named Warden of the Year in 1977. In 1979, he was named the Warden of the Georgia State Prison where he remained until his retirement in 1980.
In 1980, he was appointed administrator of Tattnall Memorial Hospital and remained there until 1991. He was named administrator of Candler County Hospital in 1993 where he remained until 1998. He was a member of Reidsville United Methodist Church, and a former member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where he served in various capacities. He was also a member of an elite group known as the Literary Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R. P. and Sarah Balkcom.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Faye Blount Balkcom of Reidsville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanne and Brent Durrence and Charla and Dewey Nail, both of Reidsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nicole Balkcom of Reidsville; six grandchildren: Dylan and Destiny Durrence, Raegan and Rachel Nail, and Bradley and Nicholas Balkcom, all of Reidsville; one sister, Barbara Christmas of Bellville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Reidsville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Walker, the Rev. Marshall Singletary, and Johnny Sikes officiating. Interment was in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Ralph W. Byrd
Ralph W. Byrd, 41, died October 24, 2005. The California native lived most of his life in Juliette, Georgia, and Arkansas. He served in the U. S. Army in 1986 and 1987. He loved to travel and spent a lot of time discovering special places in the U. S. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved to go fishing, and enjoyed spending time by the ocean.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ralph and Ella Byrd, and his grandfather, Roy Morgan.
He is survived by his wife of five years, Janet R. Byrd; one son, Ralph Wayne Byrd, Jr., of Macon; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tuesday Michelle Byrd of Glennville and Becky and Josh Havener of Griffithville, Arkansas; his mother, Norma Jean Perkins and her husband, John, of Juliette; his father, Ralph H. Byrd and his wife, Alice, of Searcy, Arkansas; one brother, John O. Perkins, Jr., of Winter Park, Florida; one sister and brother-in-law, Gloria Byrd Swan and her husband, Randi, of Quitman, Arkansas; grandparents, Ernest and Lila Perkins of Juliette; grandmother, Sarah Morgan Silz of Macon; father and mother-in-law, Odell and Ann Rogers of Claxton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Tom Pinckard of Claxton and Jill and Jim Pittman of Metter; two nephews, Jordan and James Pittman of Metter; a special friend, Cynthia Grooms of Glennville; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, and other family and friends.

S. R. "Sammie" Kirkland
S. R. "Sammie" Kirkland died October 20, 2005, at Glenvue Nursing Home. He was born on November 1, 1915, in Liberty County to Jeff and Pearl Brazell Kirkland. His youth was spent in and around Glennville where his father was a farmer and Chief of Police for eight years. As a teenager, he picked fruit throughout middle and south Florida. Later, he joined his brother in a lifelong career in the grocery and meat market profession, operating stores in Florida cities, plus Darien and Reidsville, Georgia. In the early 1960s, he founded Kirkland Crossroads Grocery at the intersection of Hwys. 144, 169, and 121 in lower Tattnall County, from which he retired to cattle farming in the late 1970s, and then completely retiring in 1990. During this time frame, he also served as both chairman and member of the Tattnall County Department of Family and Children Services Board. He was a World War II combat veteran with the U. S. Marines as a stretcher-bearer in the Pacific Campaign of Okinawa where he participated in the last amphibious assault of World War II. He also served on Guam and was a part of the original occupation of the Japanese mainland.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Etwinda Coats Kirkland, of Tattnall County.
He is survived by a son, William Roger Kirkland; a special nephew, Romie Lloyd Kirkland of Claxton; five grandchildren: William Roger, Jr. (Robin); Kelly (Richard); Terri; Shannon (Kevin); and John Steven; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 24, at Carter Funeral Chapel. Interment was in Glennville City Cemetery, with full military honors.
Pallbearers were Jody Blanton, Will Sheffield, Cecil Anderson, Lee Dubberly, Floyd James, and Jack DuRose.

Charles E. Martin
Charles Eugene Martin, 57, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, after a short illness. The U. S. Army veteran had lived in Glennville for 25 years, and was formerly employed by Stanfield Logging Company.
He is survived by two daughters, Charlene Martin of Sylvania and Stephanie Ricketts of Utah; sons: Charles and Kathy Martin, Jonathan and Erin Bunch of Glennville; and Scott and Jennifer Martin of Leesburg; one sister, Jacqueline Friend; brothers: J. W. Martin, Bobby Martin, Earl Martin, and Ronald Martin; 11 grandchildren: Jonathan, Jessica, Zachary, and Brandon Martin; Mason and Dustin Roberts; Kylee and Kiara Bowen; and Eryn, Gavin, and Kinley Ricketts; and several nieces and nephews.

Jerry Moody
Jerome P. "Jerry" Moody, 53, died Sunday, October 16, in El Paso, Texas. He was born in Leesburg, Florida, living in Glennville for many years. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam and in the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Storm. While in the military, he received numerous awards to include two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star. He retired from the military as a chief warrant officer four with 20 years' service. He was a teacher at Clark Middle School, and Technology Coordinator for the Socorro ISD in El Paso. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilton Moody.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Moody of El Paso; stepchildren, Lauren M. and Kyle Harville, both of El Paso; his mother, Katie M. Tootle of Glennville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Clark Pearson of Orlando and Debra and Michael Dasher of Glennville; nephew and family: Brett, Wendy, and Waylon Thomas of Glennville; niece and family: Lindsey, Adam, and Ethan Walker of Orlando; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 22, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Morgan and the Rev. Charles "Bucky" Strickland officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Church Cemetery, with full military honors.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
