Charlie Burroughs
Charles “Charlie” Lester Burroughs died at home on August 28, 2003, fighting, without complaint, a long-term illness. He was born in Claxton, Georgia, on February 18, 1930. He was the second son of Caurie “Cap” Lester Burroughs and Birdie Lee Kicklighter Burroughs. He married Phoebe Carman on December 20, 1957, with the marriage being solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 17, 1964. They shared 45 years of marriage and reared four children.
Charlie proudly served in the U. S. Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the Korean War and other medals and honors for his bravery and outstanding service. He graduated from Weber State College. He worked at Hill Air Force Base as an electronic technician for 27-1/2 years, retiring in 1989.
He is survived by his wife, Phoebe; children: John Burroughs of Houston, Texas; Benton (Lisa) Burroughs of South Weber, Utah; Tracy (Steven) Taylor of Oakley, Utah; Kimberly (Michael) Georgi of Sunset, Utah; grandchildren: Cody, Patrick, Stevie, Ross, Dallas, Miss Charli, and Regina; a brother, Simon (Loraine) Burroughs of Savannah, Georgia; and a special niece, Helen Atkins of Coalville, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Cameron Adkins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at the Sunset 1st Ward Meetinghouse.
Charlie grew up with Gene F. Moody in Glennville, Georgia, and both worked at the Pal Theater. Charlie sold the popcorn, and Gene was the projectionist. After high school, Charlie went one direction and Gene went another. One time when Gene was home for a visit, Charlie had just gotten home from Korea, and Gene talked him into coming to work with him in the survey and mapping business. While Charlie worked with Gene only a couple of years before he married and settled in Utah, they have been in touch ever since.
Gene lost a good friend, and wanted some of Charlie’s old buddies and friends in Glennville to know of his passing.
Kate Rush
Kate Durrence Rush, 89, died Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Tattnall Community Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Tattnall County, a homemaker, and a member of Mendes Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Rush; a grandson, Jody Rush; and a granddaughter, Jenny Rush Crawford.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and June Rush of Reidsville and Danny and Stephanie Rush of Mendes; four granddaughters: Joy Rush Barlow of Augusta, and Ashley Rush, Danielle Rush, and Katie Rush, all of Mendes; four great-grandchildren; a special niece, Laura Pinkston of Glennville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, October 27, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Eason officiating. Burial was in Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie Durrence, J. B. Durrence, Mitch Bowen, Dana Dixon, Merriell Durrence, and Kevin Dixon.

Harold Armstrong
Harold Armstrong, 71, died November 1, 2005. He was born to Solomon D. and Effie Mikel Armstrong on April 5, 1934, in Tattnall County, Georgia. He attended Tattnall County schools. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church n Tyson, Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine McKinnon Armstrong; two sons, Harry Lee Armstrong and Dennis Armstrong of Glennville; one daughter, Vondell Levant (Gary) of Glennville; three sisters: Doris Ronelle Taylor of Savannah, Sarah Berry (Curtis) of Glennville, and Luveda Brazelton (Alvin T.) of San Diego, California; a special adopted brother, Barney Lee Berry (Dorothy) of Glennville; nine grandchildren: Stephen, Anita, Taquita, Dominic, Lonaice, Aaron, Lee, Danielle, and Amy; five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alfreda Hagan of Glennville and Myrtle Duffey Robert of Beaumont, Texas; brothers-in-law, Alvin McKinnon, and Abie Paul McKinnon of New York City; Algerene McKinnon (Connie) of Beaufort, South Carolina; Gene O. McKinnon (Marion) of Claxton; and Milliard McKinnon of New York City; four godchildren: Tonya Berry, Lee Barney Berry, Elizabeth Hall, and Christina Wooley; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friend.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 6, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, in Tyson, with the Rev. Donnell Benjamin, pastor, presiding, and the Rev. Richard Neal giving the eulogy.
Active pallbearers were Bobby Frazier, Danny Levant, Marshall Broadhurst, Jessie Levant, Kenneth Berry, Robert Berry, Hope C. Hagan, John Williams, and Fulton Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were brothers-in-law and Deacons of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Cherry A. Bowen
Cherry A. Bowen, 61, died Friday, November 4, 2005, at her residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Toombs County many years, moving back to Collins five years ago. She was a retired food service worker from Vidalia High School. She was a member of Collins Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, David Bowen.
She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Bowen of Collins; a sister, Diann Cribbs of Collins; and two grandchildren, David Sorrow of Collins and Brittany Clements of Vidalia.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 6, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Steve Kimbrell. Interment was in the Old Mt. Zion Church Cemetery in Toombs County.
Pallbearers were Clifford Peeples, Richard Higgs, Wayne Bowen, John McClendon, David Cribbs, and Travis Powell.

Deanna W. Ealey
Deanna W. Ealey, 64, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005, in Buffalo, New York. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church of Buffalo, and was retired from Ford Motor Company.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Ealey; a daughter, Sonya Ealey; four sisters: Savannah Simmons, Ludulia Trimn, and Deothia Jackson, all of Collins, Georgia; and Aleatha Smith of Statesboro, Georgia; two brothers, David Norwood, Jr., of Buffalo and Ulysses Norwood of Claxton, Georgia; one aunt, Janie Z. Clark of Reidsville, Georgia; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, at Wilkerson Cemetery in Collins, Georgia.

Billy Groover
Billy Groover, 75, died November 1, 2005, at his residence in Hampton, Virginia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Virginia most of his life. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a retired pipe fitter.
He is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vernell and Hugh Strickland of Immokalee, Florida, and Iris Ryals of Augusts; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 5, in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Evans County, officiated by the Rev. William Prince.

Mary Ruth Ivey
Mary Ruth Harris Ivey, 61, died Saturday, November 5, 2005, at St. Joseph's Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, Cecil Ivey of Screven; daughters: Joyce Lee and Linda Kaye Tootle of Reidsville, Eva Harris of Blackshear, and Betty Jolley of Nahunta; brothers and sister-in-law, James Robert Harris and Terry Dale and Sandra Harris of Jesup, and Davis Harris of Screven; sisters and brother-in-law: Pat and Benny Darscey, Dorothy Westberry, and Leccy Harris, all of Jesup; and Betty and Ed Maske of Screven; grandchildren: Bonnie Bagley, Terry Lee Tootle, and Elizabeth Dasher, all of Reidsville; Damien Pedersen of Screven; Ben Guy and Angie Naas of Waycross; Patrick Harris of New York; and Donna and Ashley Harris of St. Augustine, Florida; four great-grandchildren; and an uncle, Calfey Harris of Savannah.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 7, at Cobb Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. William Prince officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. in Midway Baptist Church Cemetery.

Wilma "Dot" Surrency
Wilma "Dot" Surrency, 94, died Thursday, November 3, 2005, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Hospice. The Tattnall County native was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann Johnson of Glennville; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susan Surrency of Swainsboro; grand-children: Fay and Pat Edwards of Glennville; Ken and Gail Johnson of St. Simons Island, and Jason Surrency of Swainsboro; great-grandchildren: Britni Johnson, Drew Johnson, Joanna and Walt Rogers, and Patrick and Tonya Edwards.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 5, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville chapel, with the Rev. Gregg Usry and the Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial was at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Patrick Edwards, Ken Johnson, Jason Surrency, Pat Edwards, Walt Rogers, and Jimmy McCurdy.

Richard D. Voll
Richard D. Voll, 50, died Saturday, November 5, 2005, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Portsmouth, Virginia, native had lived in Florida and Hinesville, moving to Glennville 25 years ago. He was a U. S. Army veteran, a retired Civil Service employee from MATES, and employed by The Eagle Group at Ft. Stewart. He attended Calvary Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Irene Voll.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Voll of Glennville; children, Cheryl and Bryan Anderson and Derek and Brandy Coleman, all of Glennville; and David and Kathy Coleman of Statesboro; a sister, Karen V. Scoles of Winter Haven, Florida; a brother, Donald Voll of Davie, Florida; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Knight officiating. Burial was in Glennville Memorial Gardens, with military honors.
Pallbearers were Dana Dixon, Charles Reddish, Kenny Grooms, Royce Maire, Scott Montgomery, and Tommy Strickland.

Inez Barrow
Inez Groover Thompson Barrow, 81, died Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church, and was a former employee of Murcel Manufacturing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Thompson.
She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Rufus Henry Barrow of Claxton, Georgia; three daughters and one son-in-law: Lorine and Simon Burroughs of Savannah, Georgia; and Linda T. Morris and Joretha T. Godbee, both of Claxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Theron and Kathleen Thompson of Glennville, Georgia; one stepson and daughter-in-law, William and Kelly Barrow of Conyers; three sisters: Aline Bowers of Port Wentworth; Evon Merritt of Colorado; and Shelby Jean Hearn of Daytona Beach, Florida; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 12, at 2 p.m. at Harmony United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward Brannen and Elder W. H. Durrence officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mutt Durrence, John DeLoach, Juddie Bowers, David Lynn, Wayne Hutsell, and William Avant.

Karen M. Rogers
Karen M. Rogers, 39, died Friday, October 18, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. The Tattnall County native was a former seamstress at Roydon Wear and TAM Industries, and was currently employed as a housekeeper at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Reidsville, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her father, Louie “Pete” Rogers.
She is survived by a son, Nathan Dean Rogers of Reidsville; her mother, Pennie M. Rogers of Reidsville; two sisters, Lenora Rogers and Teresa Martin, both of Reidsville; and a brother, Ethan Rogers of Douglas.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 21, at Cobb Funeral Home, Reidsville Chapel, conducted by Bro. Danny C. Mullins. Burial was in Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Buz Cromer, Brad Barnard, Kenny Hicks, Blynn Smith, Rob Short, and Johnny Martin.
