John Justin Howard, 50
Mr. John Justin Howard, 50, died Monday, April 7, 2003, suddenly in Columbus at Doctor’s Hospital.
He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on November 8, 1952, to Herbert Howard and Maureen Cassidy Howard. Mr. Howard was a graduate of St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Conn. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. He also received a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from Cumberland School of Law at Sanford University in Birmingham, AL.
He was a partner in the law firm of Howard and Howard, P.C. He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the State Bar of Alabama, the Ohio State Bar, the Columbus Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Carswell Howard of Columbus; daughter, Katherine Grace Howard of Athens; mother, Maureen Cassidy Howard of New Haven, Conn.; sister, Mary Alexis Howard of New Haven, Conn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Ann Morris Carswell of Reidsville.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m. at the Joyce-McArthur Family Cemetery on the Family Farm, State Route 178, near Reidsville with Rev. Marshall Singletary officiating.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Lewis Jackson, 79
Lewis Jackson, 79, died Monday, March 31, 2003. The Tattnall County native was a member of Steep Hill Baptist Church. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Reserve for more than 20 years including during WWII. He continued to support his family and community after his military retirement. He was a longtime employee of Union Camp during his residence in Savannah. Upon his return to Collins in his later years, he reopened his family store in Collins in the attempts to better his community and enrich the lives of it’s youth by encouraging good educational practices and community involvement from getting together a softball team to hosting a flower-planting contest.
He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Newton Jackson, Jr. of Collins, Clifford James and Ernestine Jackson of Columbia, SC, and Gene Berkley and Faye Jackson of Jersey City, NJ; and Queen Jackson of Fayetteville, NC; a foster brother, Michael Davis; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Corene and Perfect Oliver of Pemberton, NJ, Miriam Delores Johnson of Collins, Ollie Dean and James W. Berry of Hampton, VA, and Barbara Usher of Collins; and many nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at New Bethaven Primitive Baptist Church in Collins with Elder Mercer, pastor, officitating. Interment followed in Jacksontown Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Calvin Small, Amado Strong, William Jackson, Carlester Jackson, Charles Jackson, Conny Pough, Sr., Steve Black, and Theodore Byrd.

Susan Crawford Rowland, 83
Susan Crawford Rowland, 83, of Glennville died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Huntington, Tennessee, and attended the John Gaston School of Nursing in Memphis, TN. Mrs. Rowland had lived in Glennville for the past 51 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie Ebin Rowland of 58 years. She was a member of the Glennville United Methodist Church where she once taught Sunday school. She worked beside her husband in his business and political offices. She owned the Glennville Acceptance Corporation.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and David Woodrum of Savannah and Judy and Willie Bland of Glennville; a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Ivy Nelle and James Williams of Cleveland, TN; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 9 at 11:00 a.m. at the Glennville United Methodist Church with Rev. Dwight Bishop and Rev. J. Stephen Posey officiating. Interment followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Stuart Bland, Timothy Bland, Earl Rogers, Bryant Dunn, Chuck Montford, Daniel Smith, Bud White, and Joe Clairaday.

Brenda Kay Williams Tirrell, 60, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Pensacola, FL, native had lived in Tattnall County most of her life. She was employed at Wal-Mart since 1985.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Deena and Jim Hudson of Hinesville and Lisa Johnson of Glennville; son, Eddie Tirrell, Jr., of Hinesville; sister, Debbie Hudak of Savannah; brother, Gary Williams of Brunswick; grandchildren, Meranda Wheeler, Hope Tirrell, Mark Waters, and Dillan Waters; great-grandchild, Devin Wheeler; and several nephews and nieces.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Tirrell Family Cemetery in Cobbtown with Rev. Jimmy Bargeron officiating.

Jewell Collins Anderson, 91
Jewell Collins Anderson, 91, of Glennville, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. She was born in Collins and lived in Glennville most of her life. She retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1969 after 39 years of service, was a member of Glennville Freewill Baptist Church and Glennville Golden Age Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleff Anderson and a sister, Evelyn C. Branch.
She is survived by a nephew, John I. Branch of Glennville; and great nieces and nephews, Heather R. Branch of Glennville, Ashely Brooke Branch of Charleston, SC, and John DeWitt Branch of Moore, SC.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Carter Funeral Chapel with Rev. Larry Montgomery and Brother Nolen Seckinger officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

John Herschel Brown, 85, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Pulaski Nursing Home. The Indiana native moved to Cobbtown in 1998. He was a retired bartender, avid fisherman and a Methodist.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Kay and Troy Meriweather of Cobbtown; brothers, Homer Donald Brown, Carl Eugene Brown, Robert B. Brown and William Brown all of Indiana; sister, Joyce B. Tweety; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunlight Cemetery with Rev. Tony Smith officiating.

Lummie Collins, 88, of Cobbtown, died Monday, April 14, 2003, under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer, avid fisherman, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He attended Hillside Church of God and was preceded in death by his wife, Veola Collins.
He is survived by two sons, Aaron Collins of Reidsville and Lewis Collins of Cobbtown; one daughter-in-law, Linda Collins; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. David Hubbs officiating. Burial was in the Sunlight Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Raymond Brown, Jackie Brown, Danny Brown, Jimmy Powell, James Corbett and Matthew Warden.

Mrs. Vondell Murray Collins, 85, of Cobbtown, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Metter Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a homemaker and a member of Sunlight Primitive Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, George Collins and a son, Jimmy Collins.
She is survived by sons, Howard Collins of Guyton, J.C. Collins of Claxton and Frank Collins of Scottsmoore; daughter, Lavon Bird of Cobbtown; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 11, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Sunlight Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Richard Davis officiating. Burial followed in Sunlight Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Danny Brown, Kermit Martin, Ronnie Funderburk, Billy Phillips, Buddy Collins, and Heath Brown.

Loraine (Rena) Barrow Dasher, 82, of Glennville, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Mrs. Dasher was born on December 16, 1920, at home on the DeLoach Farm in Tattnall County. She was retired from Glennville Hatchery, a homemaker and a Baptist.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbra Ann Martin of Hinesville, Cheryl Strickland of Glennville, and Teresa Pazderski of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Harley Eugene and Judy Dasher of Glennville; sister, Margaret B. Waters; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with Elder W.H. Durrence and Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Richie Pazderski, Keith Martin, Mark Strickland, Joshua Carney, Mark Dasher, and Jason Conner.

Handy Kennedy, Sr., 79, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah after a brief illness. He was born in Tattnall County and lived in Cobbtown most of his life. He was a farmer and member of Eden Primitive Baptist Church in Cobbtown.
He is survived by his wife, Sallie Kennedy of Cobbtown; five sons, Charles Kennedy, Mike Kennedy and Benjamin Kennedy all of Cobbtown, John Kennedy of Atlanta, and Handy Kennedy, Jr., of Lafayette, LA; seven daughters, Dorothy L. Byrd, Ophelia K. Gaines, and Angelique M. Kennedy all of Cobbtown, Linda K. Banks of Kenosha, WI, Retta K. Johnson and Sharon S. Kennedy both of Atlanta, and Karen J. Brooks of Macon; six sisters, Elizabeth Collins, Icy Lee Collins, Exie B. Eason, Mildred Davis, Nora Vee Mincey and Geraldine Troupe all of Cobbtown; four brothers, Lankford Kennedy and Birket Kennedy both of Cobbtown, Wilburt Kennedy of Jacksonville, FL, and Marshton Kennedy, Jr., of West Palm Beach, FL; 24 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 12, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at Whitaker Funeral Home in Metter. Burial was in the Kennedy Cemetery in Cobbtown.
