GLADYS RHODES
Mrs. Gladys Rhodes age 91 of Rocky Top Heights Blairsville passed away on Tuesday July 12, 2011 in the Union County Nursing Home following a brief illness. Mrs. Rhodes was born on Jan. 17, 1920 in Marlboro, NY, the daughter of the late Elmer Paltridge and the late Edith Dewitt Paltridge. Gladys was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for Milton New York Fire Department. She was a precinct worker for the Milton County Voter Pole and was secretary for Milton Auto for many years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Rhodes attended Antioch Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Rhodes are two daughters and one son-in-law, Doris Arlene Burlingame of Lantana, FL, Carla and Frederick Smith of Blairsville, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date from the Missionary Alliance Church in Cape Coral. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church in memory of Mrs. Rhodes.

ANTHONY "TONY" KOPERA
Anthony (Tony) Kopera, 63, passed away at his residence in Marble, NC, on Friday, August 13, 2010.
Originally from Rome, NY, and later Decatur, AL, Tony spent some 24 years in New Orleans, LA, then Nantahala, NC, before settling full-time in the Murphy area in 1997.
As a graduate of Loyola Law School in New Orleans, he was an attorney for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for more than 11 years. During that time, he also enjoyed renovating historic homes in the New Orleans Garden District, and later restoring distinctive automobiles.
He had a sense of adventure, and found his deity in nature. Ecologically informed and concerned, Tony was an avid advocate in preserving our planet. As a sense of personal expression, he took great pleasure in creating many diverse forms of art. From early childhood, he hunted and collected Indian artifacts, a passion that later developed into the study of archeology, anthropology, sociology and political science and continued throughout his entire life. Known for his analytical perspective, he embraced the truth. At the very heart of his being was his holistic approach to health and well-being. He leaves this life feeling full, rich and satisfied.
He is survived by two sons, Robert Martin Kopera, whose wife is Catherine Kopera, of Bronxville, NY, and Charles Michael Martin Kopera of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Irene Kopera Tee, and her husband, John Tee, and one niece, Lauren Ann Tee, all of Atlanta, GA. He was the son of Faye Waters Kopera of Murphy, NC, and the late Frank Anthony Kopera.
The family received friends on Friday, August 20, 2010, at St. William Catholic Church in Murphy from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., with the Memorial service at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception. Interment was in the Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murphy Public Library, 9 Blumenthal Street, Murphy, NC 28906, in Tony’s memory.

ELIZABETH ANN WAGES
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Wages age 71 of Blairsville passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Wages was born on August 24, 1938 in Blairsville, Ga., the daughter of the late Lee Stephens and the late Addie Jackson Stephens. She married Leon Wages in 1957 and they had four children, one daughter and three sons. Elizabeth loved to sew, gardening and writing poetry. She loved her family and her country. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon in 2008, her parents, her sister Aline, brothers, Frank, Carter, Cecil, Claude and Bill. Elizabeth was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Michael Gardner of Powder Springs, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Layne Wages of Clairmont, son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Bobbie Lynn of Loganville, son Alan Wages and future daughter-in-law April of Lawrenceville, four brothers and three sister-in-laws, Paul Eugene and Anita Stephens of Santa Rosa, FL, Riley Stephens of Blairsville, Henry and Martha Stephens of Dalton, Jack and Libby Stephens of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Lauren, Josh, Dakota and Bradley, six grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Monday August 16, 2010 at 11:00am from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating. Special music will be presented by Merle and Angie Fortenberry. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Wages. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Monday from 10-11am.

JUANITA HUTCHINS KIRKLAND
Mrs. Juanita Hutchins Kirkland age 78 of Blue Ridge Hwy Blairsville passed away on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Kirkland was born on Jan.12, 1932 in Rainbow Springs, NC, the daughter of the late John P. Hutchins and the late Eva Graham Hutchins. Juanita was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 121.While attending the House of Prayer Church, she taught Sunday School for over twenty years. Juanita loved children and loved babysitting them. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Kirkland, two sons, Keith and John Kirkland, one brother, Alvin Hutchins and a sister, Nettie Ledford. Mrs. Kirkland was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Kirkland are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gina and Franky Davidson, Sharon and Charlie Kidd and Missie Kirkland, two daughters-in-law, Lora Kirkland and Fran Kirkland both of Blairsville, three sisters, Ginny Millsap of Smyrna, Marie Morgan of Hayesville, Frankie Mae Martin of Andrews, one brother and sister-in-law, Bud and Judy Hutchins of Chatsworth, five grandchildren, Kandi Collins, Casey Stuart, Kayla Plott, Drake Kirkland and Carli Kidd, five great-grandchildren, Amber, Ashley and Dylan Collins, Seven and Viva Stuart, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 11:00am from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Hood and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating. Special music will be presented by Jonathan and Rhonda Hood and Kelley Brewer. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Mike Morgan, Tommy Ware, Vern Stroud, Keith Brewer, Howard Brys and Ned Wilcoxin. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9pm.

ELMER SHATTUCK PATTERSON
US Navy WWII
Mr. Elmer Shattuck Patterson age 88 of Hiawassee, GA. passed away on Wednesday August 18, 2010 in the Landmark Hospital in Athens following an extended illness. Mr. Patterson was born on January 12, 1922 in Spring Field, MO., the son of the late William Francis Patterson and the late Ruth Shattuck Patterson. He served his country as a Lieutenant in the Navy during World War II in Okinawa. After the war he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He was a Nuclear Engineer by profession working on projects and presenting papers worldwide. Mr. Patterson was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hayesville.
Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marcia, son William and daughter-in-law, Sally of Hiawassee, son Mark and daughter-in-law, Sallie of Kansas City, grandson, Ben of Norfolk, VA, and great-granddaughter, Angelica of Ashville, NC, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced later. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Church Of The Good Shepherd in memory of Mr. Patterson.

Vera Lorraine Goodwin
Mrs. Vera Lorraine Goodwin, age 95, of Little Ed Rd., Blairsville passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at Heritage Health Care in Blue Ridge, GA. She was born July 15, 1917 in Greenville, SC to the late Harrison and Margaret (Dyer) Collins. She was an early resident of Union County and moved to Atlanta then moved in 1992 back to Union County. Mrs. Goodwin was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceding her in death was her husband, James Levi Goodwin in 1985, son, James Thomas Goodwin in 1995 and a brother, Blaine Collins. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Parham officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Atlanta, GA Thursday at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers make memorial contributions to Faith Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Little Miss Katlyn Nicole Hunter
Little Miss Katlyn Nicole Hunter, age 6 months, of Washington St., Clarkesville, GA passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at her home. She was born December 6, 2012. Katlyn was a very bright and lively baby, always happy and full of energy. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include parents, Nichalas and Jodi Hunter of Clarkesville, GA, sister, Leah Kline Hunter of Clarkesville, GA, paternal grandparents, Steve and Katherin Hunter of Young Harris, GA, maternal grandparents, Linda Lester of Clarkesville, GA and Richare and Sandy Lester of Peachtree City, GA, great-grandfather William Bayles of Culman, AL, many aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles and a multitude of cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Track Rock Baptist Church with Jacob Hunter and Lee Lester officiating. Music will be by Track Rock Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Matthew Hunter and Jeremy Lester. Interment will follow in Trackrock Baptist Church Cemetery with Leah Hunter speaking and prayer by Rev. Harley Hunter. The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday prior to the service from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Angela Thomas Lamar
Mountain View Funeral Home announces the services of Angela Thomas Lamar, age 40, of Yadkinville, NC, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at her home. She was born March 26, 1973 to Douglas and Patricia Thomas of Blairsville, GA.
She is survived by three children, Robert Gage, Douglas Cade and Shania Carrie also long time partner, Greg Bryant of Yadkinville, NC, She is also survived by two brothers, Jason Thomas and his wife, Mira and son, Riley, other brother Doc Thomas and daughter DeAnna all of Blairsville, GA.
She was a CNA working with home health for over 10 years. She loved to fish and to go camping every 4th of July with all the family in the North Georgia Mountains.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her faith carried her through good times and bad. She found the Lord at a young age and always gave praise to her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Asa Dockery officiating. Interment will be at the Burch Cemetery in Hiawassee, GA.
