MILDRED ELIZABETH DANIEL
Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth Daniel age 89 of Ivy Log Gap Rd. Young Harris passed away on Thursday April 27, 2006 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Daniel was born on Jan.14, 1917 in Gwinnett County, GA, The daughter of the late Leonard Higgins and the late Jessie Jones Higgins. She was a lifelong resident of Union County. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty nine years, Truett Daniel in 2004, a son, Roger Daniel in 1991 and a granddaughter, Kim Daniel in 2000.Mrs.Daniel was a member of Suwannee First Baptist church.
Surviving Mrs. Daniel are one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lucille Daniel of Young Harris, two sisters, Dale Wilson of Canton, GA, Martha Lawrence of Mayesville, GA, one brother, Harold Higgins of Lexington, GA, six Grandchildren, Elizabeth and Terry Franklin, Renee and Perry Branyon, David Daniel, Robert and Leslie Daniel, Mary and Jeff Fortenberry, Jeffrey and Billie Daniel, fourteen Great-Grandchildren, Sharon and Derek Richards, Jessica and Crystal Hassan, Logan and Houston Daniel, Daniel, Ashley and Emily Franklin, Morgan and Jordan Fortenberry, Joshua, Bailey and Jonah Daniel, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 29, 2006 at 11:00am from the Mountain View funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Seay officiating. Special music will be presented by Wayne Morgan, Nell Henderson, Moe Buckner and Heather Henderson. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, David Daniel, Robert Daniel, Jeff Daniel, Jeff Fortenberry, Perry Branyon and Terry Franklin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be, Logan, Houston, Parker, Josh, Coleson and Jonah Daniel, Derek Richards and Daniel Franklin. Interment will follow in the Union Memory Gardens cemetery.

CLARA ANN GELSKE VARNER
Mrs. Clara Ann Varner age 89 of Mountain View Rd. Blairsville passed away on Tuesday May 2, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Varner was born on June 20, 1916 in Fostoria, OH, The daughter of the late John Gelske and the late Ann Osysha Gelske. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Varner in 2004.Mrs.Varner was a member of the All Saints Lutheran church of Blairsville.
Surviving Mrs. Varner are one nephew, Mark Gelske of Loxahatchee, FL, one niece, Laura Mae Bourque if MI. Many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish; the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union County Humane Society in Mrs. Varner’s memory.

Little Tate Patrick Truex infant son of Chuck and Lisa Truex passed away on Wednesday May 3, 2006 in the North East Georgia Medical Center.
Surviving Tate are his parents, Chuck and Lisa Compton Truex of Blairsville, three sisters, Carly, Chloe and Sophie Truex all of Blairsville, Grandparents, Ron and Marlynn Truex of Leipers Fork Texas, Jim and Linda Compton of Knoxville, TN., Ralph and Edith Buchner of Knoxville, TN., many other relatives also survive.
Graveside services will be held on Friday May 5, 2006 at 4:00pm from the Union Memory Gardens cemetery with Father Richard Wise officiating. The family will meet with friends following the services.

Mr. James Douglas England age 67 of England Drive Blairsville passed away on Wednesday May 3, 2006 at his home following a brief illness. Mr. England was born on March 23, 2939 in Union County, The son Mae Owens England and the late Lester l. England. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Mr. England was a veteran of the US Army.
Surviving Mr. England are his loving wife, Jean Wimpey England of Blairsville, one son, Billy J England of Blairsville, two brothers and one sister-in-law, John and Pauline England of Blairsville, Larry England of Blairsville, one niece, Rhonda Collins of Blairsville, one nephew, Brent England of Blairsville, several cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish, The family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc. or to the American Lung Assoc. in Mr. England’s memory.

NAN CRAVEN HOLT
Mrs. Nan Craven Holt age 74 of Holt Rd. Blairsville passed away on Monday July 23, 2012 in Marietta, GA. following an extended illness. Mrs. Holt was born on January 29, 1938 in Tallapoosa, GA, the daughter of the late Acca Craven and the late Bernice Bagwell Craven. Nan was a loving mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Lee" Holt in 2000. Mrs. Holt was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Holt are one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Tina Holt of Ellijay, GA, one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Joe Rogers of Marietta, three grandchildren, Arden, Brooke and William Lee Holt III, nephew and niece-in-law, Joe Jr. and Tammy Rogers of Marietta, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday July 24, 2012 at 11:00 am from the Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Fred Lodge officiating. Special music was presented by Carolyn Filer. Interment followed in the Shady Grove Church Cemetery where she will rest next to her beloved husband, Lee. The family met with friends at the church on Tuesday from 10-11: am. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Shady Grove Methodist Church cemetery Fund in Mrs. Holt’s memory.

BARRY PURCELL
Mr. Barry Emory Purcell age 58 of Grant Drive Atlanta passed away peacefully on Thursday July 19, 2012 at the Embracing Hospice following an extended illness. Barry had been disabled from birth. He was cared for throughout his life by many caring and loving individuals. Barry was a child of God.
Surviving Barry are two sisters and one brother-in-law, Teresa and Jerry Wiley of Rome, GA, Pam Purcell Meeks of Ft. Myers, FL, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Graveside services and interment were held on Friday July 20, 2012 at 1:00pm from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Tucker, GA. with Dr. Phillip Meeks officiating.

DONALD SMITH
US Marines Vietnam
Mr. Donald Louis Smith age 68 of Rustic Ridge Young Harris passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 24, 2012 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Smith was born on December 11, 1943 in Dixon, IL, the son of the late Louis Smith and the late Ruth Wagner Smith. Mr. Smith retired in 2010 from the Illinois Department of Corrections after several years of service. He was a veteran of the US Marines. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Donald was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. Smith was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving Mr. Smith are his loving wife of twenty three years, Marianne Ftacek Smith of Young Harris, one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Tina Smith of Pineland, TX, three daughters, Dawn Smith of Denver, CO., Melanie Smith of WI., Lisa Smith of IL, two brothers, Bill Smith of Polo, IL, Tom Smith of Yorkville, IL, Julia Meyer of Gellette, WY., twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A graveside memorial service and interment with Military Honors will be held at a later date in the Oakwood cemetery in Ottawa, IL. at a later date. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the VFW or the American Legion in memory of Mr. Smith.

JOHN HOLLINGSHEAD
John Halbert Hollingshead passed away Tuesday July 24, 2012 at Union General Hospital, Blairsville, GA. Mr. Hollingshead had been a resident of Hiawassee for the past eight years having moved here from St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Joan Thoebes Hollingshead, a son and daughter-in-law, Brian C. and Tammy Hollingshead, all of Hiawassee, Georgia. Also surviving is daughter Candes and son-in-law, Ronald Shelton of Indianapolis, Indiana and son, John Kevin Hollingshead also of Indianapolis. Mr. Hollingshead was preceded in death by a son Gary Curtis, a daughter, Lorinda Denise Karman, and his first wife, Beverley Allison Hollingshead. His immediate family include fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Caryl A. Hollingshead of Webster City, Iowa and a sister, H. Ann Brawner of Iowa City, Iowa.
Mr. Hollingshead was a member and an Elder of Mountain Presbyterian Church of Blairsville. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 259, F. & A.M. of Hiawassee, Georgia and Past Master of Meridian Lodge No. 2, F. & A.M. in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Moolah Temple of St. Louis, Missouri. He had been a member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A., Valley of St. Louis, Orient of Missouri, and a member of Meridian Chapter No. 443, Order of Eastern Star, St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Hollingshead had been a member of the Towns County Historical Society.
Mr. Hollingshead was born in Pullman, Washington, the son of Dr. Bert and Edna Hollingshead, moved to southern Iowa as a child where his father was a veterinarian located in Albia, Iowa. He matriculated and graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa at which time he began employment with Pfizer, Inc. After moving to St. Louis, Missouri he became associated with Wetterau, Inc. as a store planner for independent retail grocers developing and building supermarkets. He pursued this profession with several other grocery wholesalers which included locations in Utah, Iowa, Florida, Pennsylvania and Alabama. It is estimated that he was directly involved in design and construction of 126 new supermarkets and the remodeling of over 200 grocery stores during this 26 year period of time including projects in the Cayman Islands and Roatan, Honduras. After moving back to St. Louis, Mr. Hollingshead became a Docent at the Missouri Historical Museum. From this base he took training and became a Professional Tour Guide for the St. Louis area. His passion was studying the American Revolutionary War.
Memorial services will be at Mountain Presbyterian Church, Blairsville, GA on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
