Doris Elizabeth Pierce
Mrs. Doris Elizabeth Pierce, age 89, of Old Mill Pond Rd., Mineral Bluff, GA passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013 in Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was born January 20, 1923 in Detroit, MI to the late John and Bernice Porter Anderson. She moved here for 15 years ago from Gainesville, FL. Mrs. Pierce loved gardening, decorating and Holiday cooking. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by daughters, Cindy Pierce and Robin Sims, son, Richard Pierce and sister, Margaret Hinken. Mrs. Pierce was a Christian.
Survivors include children, Elizabeth and Harley Procter of Mineral Bluff, John (JC) and Samantha Pierce of British Virgin Islands, six grandchildren, Christopher, Lilly, Noah, Maria, Eric and Kelley.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers make memorials in Mrs. Pierce’s memory to the Humane Society Mountain Shelter.

Joseph Graham Barber
Mr. Joseph Graham Barber, age 92, of Turkey Trot, Blairsville, GA passed away on May 27, 2013, Memorial Day, in his home. He was born January 17, 1921 in Moss Point, MS to Walter Winfield and Hazel (Graham) Barber. Mr. Barber was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps 351st Bomb Group, stationed at Polebrook, England. During his service there he met and married Daphne Turner who was his loving wife for 63 years until her death in 2007. Mr. Barber was an Aeronautical Engineer Graduate of Miss. State University and enjoyed a long and distinguishing career in the Aviation Field. He retired from Delta Airlines in 1985. They built their retirement home in Blairsville and traveled extensively. He was an active member of the 351st Bomb Group Reunion and planned to attend this years meeting in June in Portland, OR at the time of his death.
Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his parents and wife and leaves behind his brother, Charles Barber of Houston, TX and sister, Betty Schmidt of Moss Point, MS. He also leaves his son, Robert W. Barber and daughter-in-law, Glenda Barber of Lucedale, MS, and daughter, Bonnie Turner and son-in-law, Sid Turner of Blairsville, GA, his four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Winfred Pitts officiating.
Joseph Graham Barber will be greatly missed by his family who will take comfort in knowing he is in a better place and reunited with his loving wife and parents.

French Steele Trogdon
Mr. French Steele Trogdon, age 92, of Appletree Lane, Blairsville passed away Monday June 3, 2013 at his home following an extended illness. He was born March 18, 1921 in Gibsonville, NC to the late John Harlen and Zella (Steele) Trogdon. Mr. Trogdon move here in 1982. He was a WWII Army Airforce Veteran, and had worked as a supervisor with the I.R.S. Mr. Trogdon was an excellent Violinist and played at church for years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Polly Claytor in 1970 and a grandson, Samuel Hicks in 2008. Mr. Trogdon was a member of Blairsville Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Effie Trodgon, of the home, children, Georgette and Ron Howerton of Suwanee, GA, Charlotte and Don Carrabotta of Rockwood, PA, George and Vicki Trogdon of Blairsville, GA and Isabelle Trogdon of Suwanee, GA, sister, Peggy Brammer of Murphy, NC, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Mountain View Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Fuller and Rev. Ivan Rexroth officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers make memorials to Blairsville Church of the Nazarene for Missions.

Kenneth George Lovingood
Mr. Kenneth George Lovingood, age 76, of Corsicana, Tx formerly of Morganton, GA passed away in Corsicana on Wednesday, June 5, 2013. He was born in Cherokee County, NC April 23, 1937 to the late George and Nina Evans Lovingood. Mr. Lovingood was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his children, Kennie and Ned Lee of Corsicana, TX, Donna and Donnie Cox of Surf Side, TX and Cecilia and Edward Petty of Augusta, GA, five grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, Jason, Johnny and Heather, seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Graveside services will be held at Hanging Dog Baptist Church Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 with Rev. Eddis Dockery officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim Key, Mike Key, Doug King, Edward Petty and Jerome Dockery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery from 10:30 until 11:00 a.m.

SHARON LOUISE REED
Mrs. Sharon Louise Reed age 68 of Dog Patch Rd. Blue Ridge passed away on Saturday October 13, 2012 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Reed was born on February 15, 1944 in Dade, FL, the daughter of the late Richard Brandt and the late Lorene Ruth Rosner Brandt. Sharon loved trout fishing, gardening and sewing. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. Before her retirement Sharon was employed with Heritage Health Care of Blue Ridge as an R. N. for over eight years. Sharon was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Reed are her loving husband of forty eight years, Gerald H. Reed Jr. of Blue Ridge, one daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Reid Carney of Blue Ridge, one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Leon Osgood of CA, one grandson, Richard Turner, many other relatives and friends also survive.
No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Reed’s memory.

CRANFORD "FORD" NIX
Mr. Cranford Ford Nix age 79 of Waterford, MI. formerly of Berkley, MI. and also formerly of Blairsville passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012 in Waterford following an extended illness. Mr. Nix was born on November 15, 1932 in Union County, the son of the late William Hamilton Nix and the late Fannie Townsend Nix. Cranford was a veteran of the US Air Force. He was a member of the Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 F&AM. He retired from the Chrysler Corporation after many years of service. Cranford invented and played a two arm banjo and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his son, Cranford H. "Little Man" Nix Jr., two brothers, Home and Raymond Nix and by two sisters, Lorena Turner and Ruby Jewell Lance. Cranford was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving Mr. Nix are two grandsons, Phineas and Aesop Smith, two brothers, Clayton Nix of Blairsville and John Nix of Blairsville, two sisters, May Lou Whitt of Blairsville and Charlotte Collins of Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday October 20, 2012 at 2:00pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Dr. Winfred Pitts and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery with the North Ga. Honor Guard conducting military honors. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-9pm.

HORACE WILHITE
Mr. Horace Lee Wilhite age 79 of Moccasin Creek Rd. Murphy Passed away on Monday Oct. 15, 2012 at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Wilhite was born on Sept. 5, 1933 in Commerce, GA, the son of the late Robert Clayton Wilhite and the late Della Lou Adams Wilhite. He had owned and operated the Sonoco Service Station for several years. Horace was a very loving and caring husband, a family man who loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was loved by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by a daughter Robin Sloop in 2011. Mr. Wilhite was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Wilhite are his loving wife of fifty six years, Barbara Wilson Wilhite of Murphy, one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Lee and Audrey Wilhite of Murphy, one daughter, Shannon Leann Lindsay of Murphy, one sister, Ruth Morgan of Chinagrove, NC, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carlton and Paula Wilhite of Salsbury, NC, Hoyt Wayne and Shirley Wilhite of Rockville, NC, two grandchildren, Michael Caison and William Sloop, four great-grandchildren, C.J. Carter, Hunter Lee Wilhite, Juliet Amy Wilhite and Candace Caison, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday Oct. 18, 2012 at 2:00pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. James Gray officiating. Members of the Bell View Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow in the Bell View Community Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7-9pm.

DR. GORDON HELD
Dr. Gordon Royce Held, passed away at age 83 on October 16, 2012 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland due to complications from bladder cancer.
Gordon was born on December 16, 1928 to Walter and Mary Held in Hinton, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1956 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced veterinary medicine for four years in Le Mars, Iowa and then attended medical school at University of South Dakota and then earned his MD in 1965 from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He practiced as a Board Certified Surgeon in Yankton, South Dakota and served on the faculty at the University of South Dakota Medical School. He also was school board President for Yankton, South Dakota.
In 1984 he moved his surgical practice to Copperhill, Tennessee and Blairsville, Georgia. He retired from the medical profession in 1997 and settled in Young Harris, Georgia. He was a member and active choir member of the House of Prayer church in Blairsville, Georgia. He was a member of Barbershoppers International. He made several medical missionary trips to Haiti and other locations. He loved boating, travel, gardening and expressing his views on current events.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Yarbrough Held and her daughter, Andrea; his son, Douglas Dwight Held and wife, Janalee Held, St. Louis, Missouri; his daughter Charlotte Rose (Held) de Sostoa and husband, Charles J. de Sostoa, Dallas, Texas; his son, Joel Bradley Held and wife Kerry Ann Held, Lincoln, Nebraska; and step-son CW2 Shane L. Toupal, and wife, Anne Elizabeth Toupal, Yankton, Harrisburg, South Dakota
His grandchildren include: Tamara Jean Leahy and her husband, Michael Leahy; Gregory Norman Held; Brittni Michelle Wait; Devin Erik Wait; Ava Nichole Wait; Emma Claire Held; Camden Garret Held; Alex Patrick Toupal; Jordan Shane Toupal; and Marques Shane Toupal.
His sister, Esther Lucile (Held) Legg and her husband Joseph Emery Legg, his best friend and cousin, Stanley Edward Held and his wife, Shelly Allayne (Swenson) Held.
He is predeceased by his wife Doris Elaine (Norman) Held, and wife Bonita Marie (Pesicka) Held; his siblings: Mary Lou (Held) Feikema, husband Bernard; Charles Walter Held, wife Helen Ann; Ruth Alice Held and Carolyn Held Davies, husband Thomas.
Visitation will begin at 1pm and a memorial service will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 22, 2012 at House of Prayer Church in Blairsville, Georgia. Donations may be directed to House of Prayer Church, Blairsville, Georgia or Freewill Baptist Church, Hayesville, North Carolina.
