Richard Bruce Bookout
Mr. Richard Bruce Bookout, 74, resident of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Emory University Hospital (Midtown) after an extended period of declining health.
Richard was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 16, 1938, son of Clarence Carl Bookout and Emily Jane Miller Bookout. He graduated from Ensley High School in Ensley, Alabama, and he attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was a lifelong Methodist and was licensed to preach in the United Methodist Church while still in high school. Until his health worsened, he was very active in his home church, Sharp Memorial United Methodist in Young Harris. He served on numerous committees and cochaired the church’s Missions Committee, which he described as the ministry closest to his heart.
Friends described him as a gentle man who was easy to love. He described himself as a happy man. Despite his health problems, he seldom complained, but answered “I’m fine. How are you?” to any inquiry. He was admired because he was determined to keep going despite severe pain. He very much enjoyed reading, and when he was no longer able to see well enough to read, he joined the regional libraries Talking Books program. Over a period of about five years, he “read” more than 1, 500 books. He was also a trivia enthusiast, particularly any concerning Native Americans, western history, the Civil War and sports.
Richard will be best remembered for his love - of life, his Lord, his church, his home, his family, and his many friends, and also for his wonderful but sometimes quirky sense of humor. He believed strongly in the healing power of laughter. He is survived by his adoring wife of 54 years, Sandra Jarrett Bookout, whom he called his best friend; his brother-in-law Hugh Ronald (Ron) Jarrett and sister-in-law Genia Renolds Jarrett; nephew Austin Jarrett; niece Kayla Jarrett and niece Lexie Jarrett.
A memorial service for Richard will be held at Sharp Memorial on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Sharp Memorial music program or to the Building Fund.
