IDA A. COOPER
Entered into rest, May 20, 2006, Mrs. Ida A. Cooper of Blairsville, GA. She was the mother of Jetta Joyce Cooper of Blairsville, Dr.Paul A. Cooper of Newport, News, VA, and Mr. Joel M. Cooper of Arizona.Another daughter, Carol Holland Whiting, predeceased her.
Ida was born in Odessa, Russia in the time of the Czars in 1905.She died aged 101.In those years.she demonstrated her ability to adapt, to triumph, to survive.Arriving here in May 1911 at the age of six with not a word of English, She entered school that September with a full command of the language and spent her life speaking English and Yiddish with equal fluency and panache.
In the age where most immigrant children left school by the sixth grade, in order to help the family’s finances, Ida preserved, working nights and going to school days until she attained her goal, a High school diploma. In the depressions years of the 1930’s she invented a new profession, account bookkeeping, whereby she was able to keep hard pressed small business men from succumbing under the weight of a burdensome payroll by going from account to account doing all the financial wok by the day or the hour, replacing full time held which had became unaffordable. After a successful career she retired to "good works". The family archives are full of newspaper clippings attesting to the tutoring she gave ghetto children, the mentoring she provided as camp grandmother during summer vacations. She was an indefatigable fund raiser for numerous charities and in her late eighties and early nineties she conducted humanities seminars for seniors at the local college, produced and directed the most popular television show on that college’s local cable channel and was the oldest recipient of its Gold Key award, an honor bestowed on people who had given extraordinary support to the college family.Through all this she maintained a gorgeous garden, spread love among her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one a college student and the other an almost one year old boy, the pride of her life, little Benjamin Rafael.
Ida Cooper has been cremated and will be laid to rest beside her husband in Massachusetts after a life well lived.
