Herbert M. Pennington

Herbert M. Pennington of Blairsville, Georgia passed away August 28th, 2012 at his home following an extended illness. Herb was born April 3, 1928 at Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia to Elvie Peed and Herbert M. Pennington. Herb grew up in Atlanta where he graduated from Tech High school. Herb was a member of Saint Johns Methodist Church. At age 18, he began his career in the automotive parts industry with Genuine Parts. In 1976, Herb moved to Perry, Georgia where he continued in the automotive parts business working for Cassidy Auto Parts in Macon, Georgia; later retiring from Cassidy Auto Parts. Herb was happiest when he was working on cars. Herb proudly served his country in the United States Army serving a tour of duty in Germany after WWII. Herb retired in 1997 and he and his wife, Hellen made plans to build their dream home in Blairsville Georgia. After moving to the North Georgia Mountains you could always find Herb and his beloved dog Baxter, tending his garden and sharing his vegetables with his neighbors. Herb dearly loved the mountain life and spent his remaining years enjoying the beauty of the North Georgia Mountains.

Mr. Pennington is survived by his loving wife, Hellen Pennington and children, Robert Lee Pennington, wife Leslie, Charles Herbert Pennington, wife Holly, Terry Lane Pennington, Virginia Lynn Pennington Norman, husband Ronald, and Thomas Hugh Pennington. Herb was also survived by his step children, John E. Berry, wife Cori, and Francine B. Whittaker, husband Bill. Herb was survived by his Grandchildren, Robert Lee Pennington Jr., Bonnie Jeanne Pennington, Alyssa Pennington, Caitlin Pennington, Hannah Pennington, James Wesley Norman, Thomas M. Norman, Andrew H. Norman, Jennifer Dollar, husband Billy, Elizabeth Berry-Branan, husband Cason, Trey Whittaker, Lena Berry, Natalie Berry, and Benjamin Whitten. He was also survived by his great-grandchildren Micah Norman, Aedyn Norman, Isabelle Dollar, Thomas Dollar, and Caden Whittaker.

There will be a Memorial Service at Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Blairsville, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Herb’s name to The American Cancer Society or United Hospice of Blue Ridge, 5004 Appalachian Hwy., Suite 3A, Blue Ridge, Georgia 30513.

Mark Alan Muir

Mr. Mark Alan Muir, age 54, of Muir Glen, Blairsville passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at North East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA following an extended illness. He was born April 24, 1958 in Savannah, GA. Mark moved to this area in 1996. He loved animals and was an avid chess player. He was involved in computer research and helped design Guidance Systems for Cruise Missiles. Mark was a loving son, brother, nephew, and was a generous, caring and very considerate person. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Anna Neilson, his paternal grandparents, George and Ann Muir, and uncle Dr. Tony Muir.

Survivors include his parents, Dr. John and Joyce Muir of Blairsville, GA, brother and sister-in-law, Todd and Cecilia Muir of Denver, CO, sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and Jonathan Dennis of Ventura, CA, aunts, Ann Manley of Hillsborough, NC, Katherine Harper of New York City, NY and Mary Walker of Lawrenceville, GA.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers make memorials to the Union County Humane Society Mountain Shelter in Mark’s memory.

DOROTHY C. HAY

Mrs. Dorothy C. (Dottie)Hay age 78 of Brackett Creek Ln. Blairsville passed way on Thursday Aug. 9, 2007 from her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Hay was born on Oct. 8, 1928, one of thirteen children to the late Peter Cournoyer and the late Sara Farley. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Marie Hay and a son, Thomas Patrick Hay, brothers, Peter and John Cournoyer. She moved to Miami in 1942 and than to Blairsville in 1985. Dottie attended St.Peters and Paul High School where she was Captain of Cheerleading. Dottie's creativity led her to become an excellent painter. She loved playing Bridge and cooking. Through her Soroity Beta-Sigma-Phi, She was always doing and giving of herself for others. She held many offices through the years. A loving wife for fifty nine years and loving mother, grandmother and recently great-grandmother. She faithfully served as a Eucharist Minister at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church which she was a member.

Surviving Mrs. Hay was two daughters. Colleen Patrkia Shafer-Rosenbaum of Vero Beach, FL, Debbie Allen of Atlanta, one son, Alfred Hay Jr. of Miami, FL. seven sisters, Virginia, Ruth, Jonnie, Sara, Thersa, Barbara and Carolyn, three brothers, Raymond, Anthony and William, five grandchildren, Danny and Jennifer Hay both of Miami, Alexis Polack of TX, Kirsten Sequeira of Miami, Stephani Allen of Atlanta, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday Aug. 13, 2007 from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with father Richard Wise and Father Ted Hay officiating. Special music will be presented by Bob and Elouise Wolfersteig. Interment will follow in St. Clares Columnbarium. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening after 5:00pm and Rosary held at 7:00pm.In lieu of flowers if you wish, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or to St. Francis Catholic Church in Dotties memory.

CHESTER LAPEZA Jr.

US Army Vietnam War

Mr. Chester Robert Lapeza Jr. age 62 of Three Point Drive Blairsville formerly Dacula, GA. passed away on Thursday August 9, 2007 at his home unexspectedly. Mr. Lapeza was born on May 24, 1945 in Savannah, GA, the son of Betsy Webb Lapeza and the late Chester R. Lapeza Sr. He was a veteran of the US Army of the Vietnam War. He retired from the CDC as a Research Chemist with over twenty five years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Lapeza in 2005.Mr.Lapeza was of the Episcopal faith.

Surviving Mr. Lapeza are one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Chester R. and Amy Lapeza of Cordele, GA, sister-in-law, Judy Lapeza of Ocean Isle, NC, two grandchildren, Chester Robert Lapeza IV, Elijah Curtis Lapeza, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be on Saturday Aug. 18, 2007 at 1:00pm from the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to your local Humane Society in Mr. Lapeza’s memory.

JOANN DIETRICH

Mrs. JoAnn Dietrich born Feb. 5, 1931 in Christian County, IL, lost her fight with Cancer at her residence on Friday Aug. 10, 2007.She is survived by spouse of fifty six years, James Henry Dietrich of Hiawassee, daughter, Donna Dietrich and Life partner, Rebecca Hinton of Hardingsburg, KY, sister, Martha J. Smith of Pawnee, IL, brothers, John W.Beck and Wife, Mary of Morrisonville, IL, Earl D. Beck and wife Jackie of Palmyra, IL, sister-in-law, Wanda Beck of Paris, IL, Elizabeth M. Hildinger of Arlington Heights, IL, Dorothy Rice of Jackson Heights, OH, brothers-in-law, Robert J. Hoffman of Golden, CO., John L. Hall of Edmonton, WA, several nieces, nephews, several grandnieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lela Adams Beck, father, Walter J. Beck, brothers, Burl Beck, Carroll Beck and Robert Beck.

JoAnn was the owner and baker at Joann’s Bakery and Deli in Dillard, GA, for twenty three years. She took first prize in the Cabbage Cook-Off in Dillard for her Cabbage Cake which was highlighted in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. JoAnn held the first and second Annual Hawaiian Luau at Chatuge Woods Campground in Hiawassee, GA, She was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, Aide De Camp, Governors Staff by Georgia Governor Zell Miller in 1991.She was employed by the USDA for ten years and worked as a Certified Wirer and Solderer at Sangamo Electric Company in Springfield, IL. for thirteen years. She was employed by Tobin Jewelers for two years. She graduated from Ball Township High School in Sangamon County, IL, She successfully completed numerous continuing education programs through Sangmo Electric Navy Dept. and the USDA. She enjoyed gardening immensely, hybridizing several of her own iris and Christmas Cacti and was a member of the American Iris Society.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Dietrich’s memory.

GERALD L. DUNKLEBERGER

Mr. Gerald L. Dunkleberger age 81 of Davenport Mtn. Blairsville formerly of W. Palm Beach, FL, passed away on Saturday Aug. 11, 2007 in the Murphy Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Dunkleberger was born on July 17, 1926 in Kosciusko County, IN, the son of the late Lawrence and Wreatha Dunkleberger. He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII and had received the Army of Occupation Medal Germany, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze Battle Star Victory Medal and Two Overseas Service Bars. He was preceded in death by a sister Eva Jordan in Aug. 2006.

Surviving Mr. Dunkleberger are a friend, Sylvia Davenport and family of Blairsville, a friend, Norman Cross of Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, Gerald’s many musician friends, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Visitation will be held on Monday August 13, 2007 from the funeral home from 6-9pm.Graveside services will be held on Thursday Aug. 16, 2007 at 2:00pm from the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, with Military Honors.

DONALD PETER NEVIEW

Mr. Donald Peter Neview age 82 of Dogwood Drive Blairsville, formerly of Bay City, MI, passed away on Wednesday June 14, 2006 in the Union General Hospital Following a brief illness. Mr. Neview was born on Nov. 26, 1923 in Bay City, MI., The son of the late Frank Neview and the late Lena Demias Neview. He retired from the Consumer Power Company in 1980.He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bay City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Neview, a son Donny Neview, brothers, Fred, Frank, Hial and Wendall Neview, Sisters, Myrtle Kraxner and Beatrice Morgan, and a son-in-law, Keith Paul. Mr. Neview was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mr. Neview are his loving wife of twenty two years, Margaret "Peggy" Blocker Neview, three daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Tim Morgan of Bay City, MI., Mary and John Warren of Alburn, MI., Cathy and Gary Fedewa of MI, step children, Stephen and Nancy Blocker of Seaford, DE., Eugenia and Norris Givins of Bridgeville, DE., Charles and Donna Blocker of Blairsville, Craig and Linda Blocker of Laurel, DE., one brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Lena Neview of Essexville, MI, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Esther Burke of Bay City, Phyllis and Ron Kuehnemund, Madeline and Wilbert Klopf all of Bay City, six grandchildren, Becky Schuman, Scott and Tony Raymaker, Michelle and Dan Warren and John Reader, six step grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced. In lieu of flowers if you wish, The family requests that memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in Mr. Neview’s memory.

BUDDY RAMSEY

Mr. Buddy Ramsey age 74 Valley Place Cumming, GA. formerly of Suches passed away on Monday June 19, 2006 in the St. Josephs Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness. Mr. Ramsey was born on May 28, 1932 in Cocke County, TN., The son of the late Robert Ramsey and the late Roxie Phillips Ramsey. He had lived in the Suches area for over twenty years, moving to Cumming in 1972.Mr.Ramsey was a welder by trade. He was preceded in death by a brother, Densel Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Ramsey are his loving wife of forty one years, Paulette Dyer Ramsey of Cumming, one son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Vickie Ramsey of Cumming, three sons and daughters-in-law, Hal and Alice Ramsey of Cumming, Clayton and Mary Francis Ramsey of Blairsville, Robert Jr. and Joyce Ramsey of Suches, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Shirley Brown of Blairsville, Barbara and Jerry Stalcup of Brasstown, NC, one grandson, John Ramsey of Cumming, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 22, 2006 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ricky Stepp officiating. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Kenny Dyer, Jack Hawkins, Bobby Norris, Johnny Taylor, Garland, Jerry Woods and Alvin Lunsford. Interment followed in the Pinetop Baptist Church Cemetery

The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm.
