Funeral services for John A. Bennett, 79, of Belle Plaine will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. Interment will be in Rector Cemetery, Chelsea. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. Mr. Bennett died Dec. 12, 2005 in Cedar Rapids.

Ruby J. Nebendahl Overturf Welch
Services for Ruby J. Nebendahl Overturf Welch, 85, Cedar Raids and formerly of Belle Plaine, were Monday, Dec. 19, 2005 at Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine, with the Rev. David Crow, Christ United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Jack Andrews, Christian Fellowship FCF, both of Belle Plaine, officiating. Burial was in Irving Cemetery, Irving. She died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids from complications of cancer. Casket bearers were Ron Votrobeck, Bob Votrobeck, Mike Blinkinsop, Richard Overturf snd Dan Lueck. Honorary casket bearers were Stacy Lueck and Jeff Overturf. Ruby was born September 16, 1920 in Elberon to Emil and Alberta Letch Nebendahl. She was first married to Richard Overturf on April 13, 1940. After his death in 1945, she attended the Paris Beauty Academy. After moving to Belle Plaine in 1947, she worked at the Beauty Nook until 1958 when she moved her shop to the King Beauty Salon until March 1964. She married Lloyd Welch in March, 1964. He died in March of 1969. She worked at LeFebure Manufacturing for 18 years before retiring in 1986. She is survived by a son, Sam Overturf of Urbana; daughter, Neenah (David) Blinkinsop of Mankato, MN; sisters, Mabel Postolka of Sioux Rapids, IA, Ruth (Bert) Lyman of Belle Plaine, Lorayne (George) Votrobeck of Elberon, Beulah Brandt of Weir, Texas; also by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lucille A. Johnston
Services for Lucille A. Johnston, 84, Belle Plaine, were Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 at Haven Community Church, Haven, with the Rev. Charles Johnson officiating. Organist was Ada Squiers. Vocalist was Anna Upah. Inurnment was at Rector Cemetery, Chelsea. Mrs. Johnston died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a lengthy illness. Lucille was born September 11, 1921 in rural Burlington, IA, the daughter of Arthur and Anna Huneke Rieke. She graduated from high school in Burlington. She married John G. Johnston May 1, 1943 in Galveston, Texas. She was mostly a homemaker but did drive a school bus for the L & M Community School District (Letts, IA) and Hubbard school district for a total of 16 years. She is survived by her husband, John; son, the Rev. John F. Johnston of Parkman, Maine. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Christine (Jake) Bingler, Michael (Debbie), Brian, Nathan, Amanda, Paul and Timothy; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Russell Bingler; sisters, Mildred Ross of Burlington and Lorraine Ross of LaJara, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Clarence Rieke, grandsons Stephen and Peter Johnston and a foster sister, Beth Reif.

John A. Bennett
Funeral services for John A. Bennett, 79, Belle Plaine, were Thursday, Dec. 15 at Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine, with Deacon Joe Behounek of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Belle Plaine, officiating. Bennett died Dec. 12 in Cedar Rapids following a short illness. Bennett was buried in Rector Cemetery, Chelsea. Casket bearers were Ross Birch, John Hayes, John Rassler, Jack Clement, Jason Bennett and Clarence Krakow. Honorary casket bearers were Julie Lieb, Krista Bennett, Joseph Bennett and Logan Dempsey. Organist was Kathryn Musel. Reader was Francis Musel. John A. Bennett was born May 30, 1926 in Brooklyn to Bernie and Anna Iezek Bennett. He was a farmer most of his life and worked for 20 years at Amana Refrigeration where he retired. He married Delores Musel on July 12, 1947 in Chelsea. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Delores in 2002; son-in-law Rick Birch in 1999; half brother Raymond Bennett and half sister Mildred Bruner. He is survived by a daughter, Pat Birch (Ray Fuller) of Cedar Rapids; sons, Jim (Deb) of Chelsea, John (Linda) of DeMotte, IN; grandchildren, Ross (Tammie) Birch of Honokaa, Hawaii, Carrie Dempsey of Cedar Rapids, Jason (Shannon) Bennett of Hebron, IN, Joseph (Amanda) Bennett of Orange Park, FL, Julie (Chris) Lieb of Cedar Rapids, Krista Bennett of Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Ka'ili, Halana, Justin Birch of Honokaa, Hawaii, Logan and Riley Dempsey of Cedar Rapids, Jonathon, Alyssa and Christopher Bennett of Hebron, IN, and Hanna Bennett of Orange Park, FL; sisters, Ruth Ehlers and Mary Van Hamme of Belle Plaine, Dorothy Manatt and Betty (Gene) Osborn of Brooklyn.

Robert Lee "Bobby" Frizzell
Funeral services for Robert Lee "Bobby" Frizzell, 46, of Chillicothe, MO, were Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe, MO. Burial was in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Chillicothe, MO. Mr. Frizzell died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, MO. He is survived by his wife, Joy Ann Carpenter Frizzell; a son, Christopher Carpenter of Chillicothe, MO; two daughters, Heather Frizzell of Chillicothe, MO, and Joy Stubrud of Muscatine; one brother, Jim Frizzell and wife D'dree of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Patty and husband, Larry Rumbo of Grain Valley, MO; one grandson, Brandon Stubrud; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Marie Sophia Bazyn
Memorial services for Marie Bazyn, 89, Brooklyn, were Saturday, December 17, 2005, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. The Rev. Brian Shepley officiated and the musician was Marilyn Kriegel. Interment was in Calvary Cemeteryat Victor. Marie Sophia Bazyn died Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn. She was born January 31, 1916, to Leo and Jenny DeBates DeCoster in Victor. She attended St. Bridget's Catholic School graduating in 1934. Marie married Rene Bazyn in July 14, 1937, in St. Bridget's Church, Victor. They lived north of Holiday Lake, Brooklyn for over 60 years where they farmed and Marie did house keeping. They were the parents of 10 children. Marie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn. Surviving are her children, Jean Wheeler of Sigourney, Mary McDonald and husband Fred of Brooklyn, Dixie Willett and Carl Marsh of Robins, Leo Bazyn and wife Judy of Lewisville, TN, Betty Vance, Oak Harbor, WA; John Bazyn and wife Colleen of Montezuma, David Bazyn of Cedar Rapids, Paul Bazyn and wife Kathy of Elkader, Jim Bazyn and Robin Houser of Montezuma; and Ann Morrow and KC Hilsabeck of Blairstown; a sister, Therase Ver Straten of Des Moines; 50 three grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Her parents, her husband who died March 19, 1999, four brothers, Frank, Lewis, Charles and John DeCoster; two sisters, Ida and Irene DeCoster; and grandchild, Luanne McDonald, preceded her in death. Douglas David Boddicker
Funeral services for Douglas David Boddicker, 55, of Blairstown, were Friday, December 30, 2005, at St. John's Catholic Church in Blairstown with the Rev. Keith Birch officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemeterywith military rites by MJ Kirby Legion Post No. 170. Mr. Boddicker died of cancer Monday, December 26, 2005, at his residence. Douglas David Boddicker was born November 23, 1950, at Cedar Rapids, the son of David John and Gertrude Svoboda Boddicker. He was raised in the Blairstown area and graduated from Benton Community in 1969. He attended Kirkwood Community College for two years and he served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973. On November 17, 1990, he married Nancy Hofland in Cedar Rapids and the couple lived in Blairstown. Doug farmed and worked for 22 years at the Pioneer Hybrid plant in Marengo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family and many friends. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and the Blairstown American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Blairstown; his mother, Gertrude, of Blairstown; a daughter, Summer (Chad) Gorsch and grandson, Kyler, of Victor; sisters, Janell (Jim) Beckman of Lakes Wales, FL, Carol (Ray) Buchli of Columbia, MO, Diane Boddicker of Aurora, CO; a niece, Sara (Matt) Alexander; a nephew, Aaron Buchli; and special children in his life, Michelle (Doug) Kriegel and children, Dalton and Destiny; Tanya (Sean) Roche and children, Bryan and Chelsea; Brandon Hofland and Grant Roorda. Esther Christianson
NORWAY­Esther Marie Hamman Dulin Christianson, 88, a resident of Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, formerly Atkins, died of cancer peacefully Friday, December 30, surrounded by her family at Living Center West. Funeral services were Tuesday, January 3, 2005, at Peace United Methodist Church, Norway. Burial was at Norway Cemetery. Esther Christianson was born April 6, 1917, in Shellsburg, the daughter of Fred and Anna Seltrecht Hamman. She was raised and attended school in Shellsburg. On June 2, 1946, she married Ray Dulin in Vinton. They later divorced. On April 9, 1955, she married Dale Christianson. Esther was employed at Collins Radio and worked as a cook in the Norway School. She was a member of Peace United Methodist Church and the Esther Circle. Esther enjoyed reading, watching and feeding birds and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. She also had a passion for helping family and friends and always put their needs first. She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Esther is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dale; two children, Candy (Ken) Osterhaus, Cedar Rapids, and Dee Anna (Roger) Volz, North Liberty; four grandchildren, Douglas (Tyera) Hess, Cedar Rapids, Dawnette (Brett) Richards, Vinton, Breanne Volz and Barry Volz, North Liberty; two great-grandchildren, Tawny Hess and Lucas Richards; two sisters-in-law, Germaine Dennis, Bettendorf, and Marilyn Perkins, Morton, IL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Albert Hamman; sister-in-law, Lois Hamman; mother-in-law, Cora Christianson; father-in-law, Gilmer Christianson; and great-great nephew, Ryan Kissner. Dean Ross Adams
Private graveside services were held for Dean Ross Adams, 49, of Belle Plaine, at Oak Hill Cemeterywith Pastor Bonnie Koeppen officiating. Mr. Adams died at his apartment on Dec. 27, 2005, from a sudden illness. Dean Ross Adams was born February 23, 1956, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, the son of Donald Duane and Marian L. Gangstee Adams. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School. He was a truck driver and moved to his present home in Belle Plaine on June 1, 2005. He is survived by his mother, Marian Adams of Belle Plaine; sisters, Vicki (Jim) Johnston of Beaverton, OR, and Marcia (Bill) Daily of Belle Plaine; nieces and nephews, Shannon and Chris Moody, Kristian Hanson and Matt and Adam Daily. He was preceded in death by his father; and a nephew, Michael Hanson. Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.

Anna Duncklee
Memorial services for Anna Duncklee, 94, of Vinton, were Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Overton-VanSteenhuyse Funeral Home in Vinton with the Rev. David Gates officiating. Inurnment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Duncklee died Mon. Dec. 19, 2005, at Virginia Gay Annex of natural causes. She is survived by four children, Rosean (Gilbert) Hansen of Vinton, Jerry (Joyce) Duncklee of Fayette, David (Cheryl) Duncklee of Waukon and Elsie (Norman) Goodell of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Alice (Don) Browning of St. Francis, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Zuleda Turnbull Close; her husband, Clark Duncklee, in 2001; one daughter; one grandson; five brothers; and three sisters. John J. Houdek
Funeral services for John J. Houdek, 84, formerly of the Elberon area, were Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine with Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery, Vining. Mr. Houdek died December 24, 2005, at Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center following a short illness. Pallbearers were Gene Formanek II, Jesse Mapes, Dan McElroy, Jim Kolars, Donovan Ohlen and Larry Kolars. Music was a CD of "Amazing Grace." John J. Houdek was born September 19, 1921, and was raised by John and Mary Houdek and grew up in Meadow Lands, MN. He received his education at Meadow Lands Country School through the eighth grade. He married Frances Kriva on April 16, 1952, at the Tama County Courthouse. She preceded him in death on July 11, 1990. He was a farmer. He lived on a farm in the Elberon area from 1952 to 1996 and moved to the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center in March 1996. He was a member of the Catholic church and enjoyed fishing. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Antonia Formanek of Dandridge, TN; nine nieces and one nephew. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Esther Virginia Miller
Funeral services for Esther Virginia Miller, 92, of Palo and formerly of Belle Plaine, were Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine with the Rev. John Howerton of Palo United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Mrs. Miller died January 4, 2006, at the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton. Pallbearers were Megan Fontana, Becky, Mitchell, Shelby, Mikkie, Michael and Audrey Grieder. Music was provided by organist, Jane Hrabak, and vocalist, Anna Upah. Esther Virginia Miller was born September 1, 1913, at rural Chelsea, the daughter of James and Zoe Chambers Tesar. She completed 10th grade at Belle Plaine High School. She married Carroll Miller on Sept. 3, 1933, at Marshalltown. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1992. She worked at Moore's Bakery and Lane's in Belle Plaine and Killian's in Cedar Rapids for 22 years. She had resided in Cedar Rapids and Belle Plaine and moved to her present home in 1993. She was a member of the Palo Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Grieder (Richard) of Shellsburg; grandchildren, Jeff (Leslie) Grieder of Boise, ID, Paul (Cheri) Grieder of Shellsburg, Andrew (Jesse) Grieder of Vinton, and Anne Grieder of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law, Betty Tesar of Marengo; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Laurence Tesar; and one grandson, Michael Grieder. Charles L. Willfong
Memorial services for Charles L. Willfong, 77, of Belle Plaine, were Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine with the Rev. Bev Thompson-Travis, chaplain of St. Luke's Hospice, officiating. Mr. Willfong died Dec. 31, 2005, at his home following a long-term illness. Honorary pallbearers were Rachel (Daily) Brody, Jonathan Willfong, Adam Willfong, Paige (Willfong) Zeizer, Elizabeth Daily, Thomas (TC) Daily, Amanda Willfong, Emily Willfong and Briana Willfong. Charles L. Willfong was born February 4, 1928, at Alta, the son of Frank L. and Hattie Vickery Willfong. He married Helen K. Galvin on July 17, 1953. He was a toolmaker at Amana Refrigeration and Benco. He was in the service from Nov. 14, 1950 to Nov. 13, 1952, stationed at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Belle Plaine; his children, Don Willfong and wife, Nancy, of Ely, Jeff Willfong and wife, Tammy, of Garwin, and Jean DeEtte Daily of Belle Plaine; a sister, Alberta Moore of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Willfong. Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine was in charge of arrangements.

Lauren W. Denzler
Funeral services for Lauren W. Denzler, 68, Belle Plaine, were Thursday, Jan. 5, at First United Methodist Church, Marengo. He died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. The Rev. Tom Carver officiated at the service. Burial was in the Koszta Cemetery. Casket bearers were Rodney Cronbaugh, Robert Hembera, Robert Jacobs, George Vileta, John Cruise, Allen Mumby and Kyle Kaplan. A memorial fund has been established. Lauren Wayne Denzler was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Marengo, the son of Everette Wayne and Dena Jeannette Cronbaugh Denzler. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1955. He married Sharon Kay Willie Jan. 14, 1961, at First Methodist Church, Marengo. The couple farmed in Iowa County. He was a member of the National Guard for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada and auctions. He loved his grandchildren and especially enjoyed spending time with them. Denzler is survived by his wife; three children and their spouses, Johnnette Lynn and Robert Ulch, Alexandria, Va.; Lori Lynn and Andy Ehlen, Belle Plaine, and Kim Lynn and Curt Hynek, Swisher; six grandchildren, Megan, Ben and Jacob Ehlen, Belle Plaine, and Jesse, Calvin and Coilee Hynek, Swisher, and two sisters and their husbands, Sharon and Robert Jacobs, Ladora, and Linda and John Cruise, Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Douglas Elton Keiper
Douglas Elton Keiper, 59, of Atkins, died at home, Tuesday, January 17, 2006, of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Memorial services were Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Dr. Herbert Isenberg. Burial was at Parker's Grove Cemeterynear Shellsburg. Douglas Elton Keiper was born October 13, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. He was the son of Irvin and Dolores (Melberg) Keiper. He attended school in Atkins and graduated from Jefferson High School. He received his B.A. in 1969 from the University of Iowa. Doug attended the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, WI. Doug married Bonnie Hagan of Atkins on August 25, 1967 at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. After living in Cedar Rapids for 15 years, they moved to the Keiper family farm, being the fifth generation to live there. Doug farmed 160 acres. He was a vice president of Merchants National Bank ­ Firstar, where he worked for over 28 years. He became the president of Benton County Savings Bank in Norway and then senior vice president of BankIowa in Cedar Rapids, where he retired after 36 years in banking. He served as chapter president of the American Institute of Banking. Doug was the Fremont Township clerk and an Atkins Telephone Company director. He served as president of the Atkins Community Club. He was a 10-year Benton Community School Board member, where he served as president. Doug served as an elder and trustee of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and chairman of the finance committee. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmer and Irene (Tuttle) Melberg and Henry and Katherine (Rinderknecht) Keiper. Doug is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of 38 years; his son, Major Matthew Keiper and wife, Paula of Woodbridge, VA; his daughter, Capt. Melanie Keiper of Montgomery, AL; his son Mark Keiper and wife Kate of Cottage Grove, MN, his granddaughters, Kaitlin and Lydia Keiper of Woodbridge, his parents, Irvin and Dolores Keiper of Atkins, his sister, Janice and brother-in-law, Karl Nelson of Shell Rock; his sister-in-law, Carole Lewis of Spokane, WA; his sister-in-law Phyllis Mumford and husband Kent Sovern of Des Moines, and four nieces, two nephews, one grand nephew and seven grand nieces. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation.

Joyce Lonergan
Joyce Lonergan, 71, of Boone and formerly of Belle Plaine, died January 17, 2006 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A Funeral Mass was Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone where the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiated. Following the service, her body was cremated and her cremains will be buried in Sacred Heart Cemeteryin Boone at a later date. Joyce was born March 5, 1934, on a farm near Belle Plaine in Benton County the first-born of Robert and Fannie (Duda) Jacobi. She attended country school, Longfellow grade school, and Belle Plaine Junior High. Her mother married Charles "Peck" Hutchinson and the family moved to Boone in 1947. Joyce married Paul Lonergan on August 12, 1950 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She graduated from Boone High School in 1952 and took numerous classes at DMACC during her life. She always said her greatest accomplishment was helping Paul raise their four children who grew to adulthood learning to give back to society. Paul died of a motorcycle accident August 2, 1977. In earlier years, she was a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den mother, Campfire sponsor, and Home and School President at Sacred Heart School in Boone. She served in the Iowa House of Representatives for 12 years from 1974 to 1986. From 1986 to 1998, she was Boone County Recorder. She was active in Boone County Democratic politics for many years and worked on many congressional and political campaigns. The highlight of her political career was lunch at the White House with President Jimmy Carter in 1980. She received the Boone County Democrats Everett Brown Award in 2002 and won the Women Helping Women Award from Soroptimists International in 1977. She enjoyed hosting strangers in her home, journalists Elena from Russia and Hunda from Mongolia, Little League players, and Andrea Mora from Ecuador became her fifth child during the 1989 to 1990 school year when she served as a host family in the Foreign Exchange Program. She was a 25 year member of ABWA serving in every capacity, Boone County Historical Society, Boone Railroad Society, American Legion Auxiliary, the Boone Area Humane Society, and the Purple Hat Guild. She was also an active member of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone and Sioux City Diocese Council of Catholic Women, and a former president of Boone Church Women United. She served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Boone County Community Credit Union for two years. She owned "The Book Store" at 504 Benton Street in Boone. It was her favorite business interest because she met so many others who shared her love of books. After she retired, she wrote a monthly article for Senior Sounds in the Boone News Republican. Most were about her family and her dog, Gladys. Joyce was able to travel to the USSR, Africa, several countries in Europe, and Ecuador in South America. Her favorite trip was with her sister in 1993 when they went to the Czech Republic and visited relatives. (The house where her grandmother was born is still in the family.) She had many hobbies including reading, politics, traveling, playing bridge and pinochle, and following her grandchildren's activities. She was preceded in death by her father, stepfather Charles "Peck" Hutchinson and her husband, Paul Lonergan. She is survived by two sons, Patrick Lonergan and wife, Terri of Wichita, Kansas and Peter Lonergan and wife, Nancy of Boone; two daughters, Kathleen Lonergan and Staci Newberg both of Boone; her mother, Fannie Hutchinson, of Boone; a brother, R. Dean Jacobi of Polk City; a sister, Joanne Tedesco and husband, Ted of Ames; three stepsisters, Delores Davis and her husband, Jim, and Joyce Kennedy all of Yuma, Arizona, and JoEllen Howard and husband, Don of Boone; a brother-in-law, Don Lonergan and wife, Charlotte of Boone and a sister-in-law, Mary Pike of Ogden; 5 grandchildren, Heather Beck and husband, Michael of Rusk, Texas, Hannah Lonergan of Wichita, Kansas, Carly Lonergan, Mallory Lonergan, and Taylor Newberg all of Boone; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorials may be given to the Sacred Heart School Foundation or the Children's Room of the Ericson Public Library in Boone. Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone is in charge of arrangements.

Roy John Becker Sr.
WATKINS­Roy John Becker Sr., 62, Watkins, died Friday, January 27, 2006, at University Hospitals, Iowa City, from complications of heart surgery. Services were Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Newhall, with the Rev. Keith Birch officiating. Burial was at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Norway. Roy John Becker Sr., born on April 20, 1943, to Dorothy and Elmer Becker of Watkins. He is survived by his children Roy John Becker Jr., Jamie John Becker, Hope Elizabeth Becker, Scott John Becker and Adam John Becker. Roy participated in 4-H and FFA. He received his Honorary American FFA Degree in 2000. He graduated from Newhall High School in 1961 and married Carolyn Kubichek in 1962. Roy was a member of the Army National Guard. He served on the Benton Community School Board. He was a member of LICA and many other organizations. Roy was an operator and owner of Becker Tiling, Excavating, Septic and Water. Roy had a distinct dedication to his family and friends. He set an example for his children not only with his actions but also with his words. Roy had a passion for fishing that was only rivaled by his love and compassion for his family and friends. He was a great man that will not soon be forgotten. Harlan D. Hamann
KEYSTONE­Harlan D. Hamann, 83, Keystone, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at his residence following a brief illness. Funeral services were Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne with the Rev. Jena Manchester officiating. Interment was at the Keystone Cemeteryin Keystone. Harlan Hamann was born October 23, 1922 at the farm home where he lived his entire life and died peacefully Wednesday, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Arthur and Anna (Balhorn) Hamann. In 1940 he graduated from the Keystone High School. On June 19, 1946 he married Lois Cronbaugh at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. Harlan farmed until his retirement in 1988 and for 44 years from 1962 until 2006 he assisted with funeral services at the Fellmet and Phillips Funeral Homes. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, past president and longtime district board member of the Keystone Turners, vice president of the Keystone Mercantile from 1961 to 1994, a member of several bowling leagues, a former member of the Belle Plaine Country Club and a current member of Tara Hills Country Club. Harlan loved farming, fishing, welding and spending time at his son's cabin. He also loved to fly and in the late 70s he completed his first solo flight. He is survived by his wife, Lois of Keystone; his son, Allen and daughter-in-law, Julie of Cedar Rapids; his daughters, Beverly Sue Gibson of Lakewood, CO, Janis Easton and husband, Dean of Canadensis, PA, and Lori Hamann of Golden, CO; his grandchildren, Lisa Bornholtz and husband, Tim, Stacee Gibson, Heather Hamann, Bradley Hamann and wife, Joy, and Eric Hamann; his great-grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, and Stephanie Bornholtz; and his sister, Donna Mae Malloy of Cedar Rapids. His parents and his brother-in-law, Bill Malloy, preceded him in death. Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
