She was a member of the Christian Church in Joplin, MO. While in Keokuk, IA, she was a member of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine. AnnaBelle Craig, 93, of Mission, TX, formerly of Keokuk, IA, died April 18, 2002 at the McAllen Nursing Home in McAllen Texas. Survivors include one daughter Billie Jean Snyder of Mission, TX, four grandsons, Neal Riede of Eldridge, IA, Victor MacDonald, Jr. of Sarasota, FL, Michael Snyder of Minneapolis, MN and Craig Snyder of Keokuk, IA, two granddaughters, Jeaneta Catterson and Anneta Sowa both of Joliet, IL, three great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters, seven great-great-granddaughters, one great-great-grandson, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal, on February 4, 1996, one daughter Waneta Drilling in 1976, four brothers, Alfred, Roy, Rolland & Carl Marvin, two sisters, Gwendolyn Howard and Bette Marvin. Graveside services were held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, June 8 at the Montrose Cemeteryin Montrose, IA. The family met with friends following the service at the cemetery.

Arlis William Taylor was born April 6, 1933 in Rutledge, MO, the son of Ravel and Elsie Norton Taylor. On July 6, 1957, Arlis was united in marriage to Merlyn Newman Arnold in Hannibal, MO. Mr. Taylor graduated from Baring High School in Baring, MO with the Class of 1951. Following his graduation he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country for two years during the Korean Conflict. He then served in the United States Army Reserve until 1962 when he received his Honorable Discharge. He had been employed at Bill Schreck's Pawn Shop in Keokuk, IA. Most recently, he and his daughter, Zandra, had owned and operated Taylor's General Store in Keokuk, IA. He was well known in the area for his chair caning. He enjoyed trap shooting, pheasant hunting and playing cards. Arlis W. 'Muggs' Taylor died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at his home in Keokuk, Iowa at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife, Merlyn of Keokuk, IA, two daughters, Joyce Joy of Tampa, FL and Zandra Cole of Burlington, IA, one son, Ron Taylor and his wife Brenda of Keokuk, IA, five grandchildren, Mindy Taylor, Matt Joy, Brandy Taylor, Ronnie Taylor, and Casey Taylor, one great grandchild, Jordon Tate and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, one grandson, Jamie Joy, one cousin and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at the Vigen memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Leon Buford officiating. Burial with Military Rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. A memorial was established for the family.

Laurie was a life-long resident of Keokuk, IA and was a graduate of Keokuk Senior High School and Robert Morris College of Carthage, IL. She had been employed by Leyda, Burrus & Metz of Burlington, IA, and the City of Keokuk. Her last place of employment was B.T.R. in Keokuk, IA as a computer technician in the engineering department. She enjoyed crafts, interior decorating, making stained glass and collecting quilts. She enjoyed boating on the Mississippi and was in regular attendance at the Rolling On The River festivals in Keokuk. She loved to go motorcycle riding with her husband. Laurie was very proud of her daughter Sara. Sara's greatest gift to her mother was the birth of her granddaughter, Alyssa. Laurie was a fantastic grandmother and Alyssa was the apple of her 'Nanny's' eye. She was always bragging, which is a grandmother's right, about Alyssa's latest accomplishments. Laura 'Laurie' Kathleen Creach died Saturday, May 18, 2002 at her home in Keokuk at the age of 42. A memorial has been established for her granddaughter's Education Fund.

She married Raymond Mathes on July 20, 1947 in Gorin, MO. He preceded her in death on September 7, 1979. Wanetta had lived in the Gorin and Wyaconda area all of her life. She was a member of the Wyaconda Christian Church and the W.M.U. of the Church. She enjoyed following sports that the kids were involved in and was an avid Wyaconda Sports Booster. She also enjoyed getting together with her buds and playing cards. She was a loving mother and grandmother and treasured the time she spent with her family and friends. Visitation was held after 1:00 P.M. Tuesday with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 P.M. at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO. Pallbearers were David Trueblood, Kenny Sowers, Don Harvey, Darrell Harvey, J.R. Derkson and Ken Mathes. Honorary pallbearers were Danessa Mathes, Dennis Mathes, Lois Hunziker, Mary Louise Jenkins, Phyllis Hutchinson, Frances Lunsford, Dorothy Bertram, Kathleen Smith and Helen Elam. Organist was Margaret Davis. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “Under His Wing.” Recorded selections were “My Redeemer” and “I Can Only Imagine.” Memorials were made to the Wyaconda Christian Church. Francis “Dean” Koeber, 76, of Kahoka, MO died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born March 9, 1926 in Neeper, MO, the son of George and Inez McGuire Koeber. He married Florence Schaefer on July 12, 1969 in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on October 13, 1999. Dean had lived his entire life in Clark County. He attended grade school at Brush College and graduated High School in Kahoka. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in WW II. After serving in the Navy he returned to Kahoka and worked as a printer at the Gazette Herald. He had farmed and hauled livestock in Clark County. He opened the Corner Tap Restaurant and Tavern in Kahoka in 1967. He owned and operated the tavern until his recent retirement. He also owned harness horses and enjoyed racing them. He was a member of the Clark County Moose Lodge and the Herman Blum Post #192. He is survived by several cousins and a host of friends. Graveside services were held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Kahoka Cemeterywith Reverend Ken Beckmann officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Kahoka Cemetery. There was no visitation. The Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO is in charge of arrangements.

Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the Kahoka Cemeterywith Pastor Dick Clifford officiating. Burial was in the Kahoka Cemetery. There was no visitation. The Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO was in charge of arrangements.

Born on August 12, 1909 in Jefferson County, IA, Esther was the daughter of Maude I. Shelman. On February 4, 1928 she was married to Howard H. Harlan in Monmouth, IL. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1989. They had celebrated 61 years of marriage. She obtained a teaching certificate and prior to having a family taught at Crackerneck country school. Her adult life was spent as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She lived in Hillsboro, IA until 1943, and then lived in Burlington, IA until November 1973. At that time Esther and Howard retired to Ft. Pierce, FL and resided there for a period of ten years. For health reasons she moved to Rocky Mount, MO in April of 1984 and remained until November, 1994. She then moved to Keokuk, IA where she lived with her daughter. She was a member of churches in each city and most recently of Fellowship Bible Church in Eldon, MO. She was a lifelong member of Royal Neighbors of America. Esther Alice Harlan died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa at the age of 92. Mrs. Harlan is survived by one son, H. Eugene Harlan of Anderson, IN, one daughter, Helen K. Martin of Keokuk, IA, four grandchildren, Greg (Nancy) Harlan of Haddonfield, NJ, Lori (Patrick) Cole of Greentown, IN, Kim (Jim) Boyd of Keokuk, IA, Kirk (Karen) Brandt of Davis, CA, three step-grandchildren, Ray L. Herbert R. Vermazen, 80, of Woodland, CA, died Friday June 21, 2002. He was born on October 9, 1921 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Lewis and Jennie Johnson Vermazen. Mr. Vermazen served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and flew 35 missions over Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He had lived in the Montrose, IA and Hamilton, IL areas and was a carpenter by trade. Survivors include his wife, Marie Vermazen of Woodland, CA, one son, Richard Vermazen and his wife Diane of Woodland, CA, one daughter, Dianna Hempen of San Diego, CA, four grandchildren, Rusty Vermazen of Woodland, CA, Deena Zeck of Palo Cedro, CA, Michelle and Eric Hempen of San Diego, CA, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Robert Vermazen and his wife Ila of Montrose, IA, and two sisters, Mary Wardlow and her husband Bob and Agnes Stockwell and her husband Lloyd all of Rialto, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ida VanPelt Vermazen , his second wife Laverta Lee Vermazen, one brother Charles Vermazen, and one son-in-law, Stephen Hempen. A Memorial Service was held at 11 A.M., Saturday, July 13 at the Assembly of God Church in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Jerry Goodrich officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Sandusky Cemeteryin rural Keokuk, IA. A Memorial was established for the Assembly of God Church in Keokuk.

Eleanor Squires

Born on December 14, 1914 in Quincy, IL, Eleanor was the daughter of Joseph and Francis Freming Wellman. On February 3, 1933, Eleanor was united in marriage to Walter P. Squires in Hannibal, MO. In her younger years, Mrs. Squires was a housekeeper for St. Peter's Catholic Church and Schmidt's Funeral Home, which later became Vigen Memorial Home, all of Keokuk, IA. She and her husband, Walter, owned and operated the Home Caf' in Keokuk for several years. She was an active member of the All Saints Parish in Keokuk, IA, the Ladies of Charity and the Daughter's of Isabelle. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She loved quilting and had made many beautiful quilts over the years for her family and friends. Eleanor E. 'Nonie' Squires died Monday, June 24, 2002 at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA at the age of 87. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara J. Cameron and her husband Clarence of Basco, IL, one brother, Clarence Wellman and his wife Sylvia of Quincy, IL, one sister, Lucy Emerick of Quincy, IL, five grandchildren, Perry Cameron and his wife Kim of Warsaw, IL, Cathleen Cameron of Kansas City, MO, David Cameron and his wife Marie of Basco, IL, Patrick Cameron of Nellis Air Force Base, NV, and Deirdre Cameron of Gladstone, MO, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded her in death by her husband Walter on September 22, 1972, one granddaughter, Bonnie, four brothers and three sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 A.M., Friday, June 28 at the All Saints Parish in Keokuk, IA with Father Christopher David officiating. Burial was at 2 P.M. Friday in the St. Anthony's Cemeteryin Quincy, IL. Visitation was held after 1 P.M., Thursday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with the family meeting with friends from 6 ' 8 P.M. A Vigil Service was held at 7:30 P.M. Memorials were established for the All Saints Parish, the Alzheimer's Association and River Hills Village.

Mary Gorham

Born on March 10, 1931, in Keokuk, IA, Mary was the daughter of John and Veula Mitchell Tigue. She was raised and adopted by Clawson and Pearl West. On November 6, 1948, Mary was united in marriage to Max Gorham. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1991. Mary was a lifelong resident of Keokuk, IA and had owned and operated Gorham Electric and Gorham Pet Motel in Keokuk. Most recently she had been employed at the Arrowhead Bowl in Keokuk. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk, IA. She loved to bowl, play bingo and do needlework and was an avid Cardinal and Cub baseball fan. Mary was a loving mother and grandmother and treasured the times she spent with her family. Mary M. Gorham died Tuesday evening June 25, 2002 at her home in Keokuk, IA at the age of 71. She is survived by three sons, Mike Gorham and his wife Debbie of Keokuk, IA, Don Gorham and his wife Kathie of Keokuk, IA, and Dale Gorham and his wife Tina of Hartford City, IN, two daughters Sherry Rutledge of Concord, CA and Lori Orr and her husband Mike of Walnut Creek, CA, seventeen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and best friends, Marie Hayden and Shirley Gorham. She was also preceded in death by four brothers. Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 1, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation was held after 1 P.M., Sunday with the family meeting with friends from 6 ' 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Born on October 10, 1914 in Slovania, Yugoslovia, Maria was the daughter of Nicola and Milicia Drazic Shedbedja. She first married Frank Poh. He preceded her in death. She married Petar Grubor in February of 1951 in Germany. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1976. She had been employed as an assistant chef at Stouffer's Restaurant in Chicago, IL. She was a member of the Eastern Serbian Orthodox Church in Chicago, IL. Maria loved cooking, crocheting and singing. She was loved by all. 'Baba, you'll always be remembered, never forgotten,' your grandson Bato. Maria 'Baba' Grubor died Friday, June 28, 2002 at the Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, IA at the age of 87. She is survived by two daughters, Patty (Garcia) Grubor of Keokuk, IA, and Maria Korica of Mesa, AZ, three sons, Joey Grubor and his wife Susan of Chicago, IL, Tony Poh and his wife Patsy of Show Low, AZ, and Ray Reynolds of Chicago, IL, three sisters, Boslika Stanojovich of South Wales, England, Stojaknka and Dushanka of Belgrade, Yugosalvia, eleven grandchildren, Vicki Brown and her husband Mike of Keokuk, IA, Jose Garcia III and Sophia Garcia, both of Keokuk, IA, Justin Grubor of Chicago, IL, Vera Stempski and her husband Jim of Phoenix, AZ, Laura Sandford and her husband Jim of Lexington, KY, Steven Korica and his wife Linda of Las Vegas, NV, Danny Korica and his wife Holly of Chandler, AZ, Toni Eisenhart and her husband Greg of Phoenix, AZ, Terri Pardum and her husband Dave of Phoenix, AZ, and Bob Poh and his wife Chrissy of Scottsdale, AZ, and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one brother Dane Shedbedja and one son Nicola Poh. Graveside services were held at 2 P.M., Wednesday, July 3 at the St. Sava Cemeteryin Libertyville, IL with Reverend Ivanovic officiating. Visitation was held after 3 P.M. Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with the family meeting with friends from 6 ' 8 P.M.

Robert Creger

Robert Joseph Creger, 83, of Kahoka, MO, died Monday, July 01, 2002 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born August 17, 1918 in Kahoka, MO, a son of Guy and Agnes Durkin Creger. He married Dorothy Viola Brown on May 15, 1943 in Hattiesburg, MS. She preceded him in death on February 17, 1997. Bob had worked as a Union Bricklayer in Hannibal, MO and Keokuk, IA from 1952 ' 1965. He then worked at the Ordinance Plant in Middletown, IA for 16 years. Following his retirement he operated Bob's Bike Shop in Kahoka until 1997. Bob was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kahoka and a member of the American Legion. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Corbett-Malinak and her husband Ken of Peoria, AZ, two sons, Mike Creger and his wife Jonni of Palmyra, MO and Ron Creger of Kahoka, MO, four grandchildren, Michele Corbett and Scott Corbett of Phoenix, AZ, Mary Creger and her husband John Schultz of Columbia, MO and Daniel Creger of Massillon, OH, four great grandchildren, Anastasia Corbett of Phoenix, AZ, Samantha and Chloe Corbett of Phoenix, AZ and Alex Schultz of Columbia, MO and one sister, Kathleen Dillon of Phoenix, AZ. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother James. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 5, 2002 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Kahoka, MO with Father Tom Alber and Father Roland Carbone officiating. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Post #192 and the V.F.W. Post #4342 was in the Kahoka Cemetery. Visitation was held after 9:00 A.M., Thursday, July 4 with the family meeting with friends from 7 ' 9 P.M. at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO. Memorials may be made to the WW II Memorial or the donor's choice.

Betty Jean was born on July 19, 1930 in Kahoka, MO, the daughter of Harry and Bertha Wells King. She had been employed at A T & T in Omaha, NE for twenty-six years, retiring in 1992. She enjoyed working in her garden and feeding the birds. She loved to knit and made many mittens for her family and friends. Betty Jean Grap died Sunday, July 7, 2002 at her home in Council Bluffs, IA at the age of 71. She is survived by her two sons, Aaron Grap and his wife Jan of Council Bluffs, IA, Eric Grap and his wife Laurie of Bellevue, NE, and one grandson, Zachary Grap. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Daryl King, Charlie King, Harry King, Jr., and Willis King. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, MO. Burial was in the Kahoka City Cemetery. Visitation was held after 1 P.M., Tuesday with the family meeting with friends from 7 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
