Jim Crellin
Jim Crellin, operator of pharmacies in Tucumcari for 43 years died January 22, 2000. James H. Crellin was born at Sioux City, Iowa, on May 16, 1930. He attended schools in Cloeridge and Lincoln, Nebraska, and graduated from high school in Clarinda, Iowa, in 1947. He attended Clarinda Junior College and the University of Nebraska until 1951, when he enlisted in the Navy. After serving almost five years as a Pharmacist's Mate at Memphis Naval Hospital on the U.S.S. Olgethorpe, and at the Norfolk Amphibious Base, he was discharged as a Corpsman 2nd Class. He then continued his pharmacy training and graduated from the University of Colorado. James Crellin moved to Tucumcari in 1957 with his parents, L.D. "Pete" and Myrtle Crellin, where he and his parents purchased D&S Drug on Main Street. In 1959 Jim and his father purchased 66 Drive-In Drug on Highway 66. Norma Redhage and Jim Crellin were married in July of 1960. In 1965 the L.D. Crellins retired and moved to Denver. Norma started keeping books for the two drug stores. In 1968 Jim sold both stores and opened a new store, Zia Drug, which they operated for 30 years. He served his country in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was active in many civic duties in Tucumcari and Quay County. Survivors include his wife Norma Jean Crellin of Tucumcari; one daughter, Kristy Frame and husband Don of Little Rock, Ark; one sister, Joan Maurer of Silver Creek, Nebr.; one brother, John S. Crellin of Taos; three nieces; two nephews. Funeral services were held at Dunn Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the family plot of Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests for those who wish, donations be made to local charities.

Velma Davison
Velma A. Davison, 91, of Burlington Junction, Missouri, passed away at her home Thursday afternoon, March 9, 2000. She was born January 7, 1909, near Elmo to Henry and Nora Pike Neff. She attended high school at Elmo. She married Wayne L. Davison, November 17, 1929, at the Methodist Church in Clarinda. They have shared seventy years of marriage. She was a homemaker and has lived her entire life in Nodaway County having lived in Elmo, Clearmont, and Burlington Junction. She and her husband moved into Burlington Junction in 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Galen Neff, Raymond Neff, and Byron Neff; two sisters, Mildred Aldridge and Mary Crowdes. She is survived by her husband, Wayne of the home; son, Charles W. Davison, Clearmont, Missouri; two daughters, Joyce Hagey of Clarinda and Judy Logan of Ridgeway, Missouri; brother, Darrell "Woody" Neff, Greenfield, Missouri; six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday morning, March 13, at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Home in Burlington Junction with burial at High Prairie Cemetery, Elmo. The family has suggested memorials be for the United Methodist Church, Burlington Junction.

Jerry L. Day
Jerry L. Day, age 70, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2000 at his home. He was born May 24, 1929 in Clarinda, Iowa. He retired from USN in 1973 and retired from the Escambia County Sheriffs Department in 1991. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #2108, Fleet Reserve #22, and the American Legion Post #240. Mr. Day was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Elva Day and daughter, Penny Day. He and his wife would have celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on June 20, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Betty Day; two daughters, Sue Ann Young and her husband Greg and Jennifer Horne and her husband Eric; two sons, Kerry Day and his wife Jackie Archer and Roger Day and his wife Rita; brother, Dr. Kenneth Day; and seven grandchildren, Emily Young, Molly Young, Sophia Young, Will Horne, Alexandria Horne, Cydney Da and Taylor Day. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 3, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home, Florida, with Rev. Rick Butler officiating. Burial was in Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery. Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Pkwy, was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Day
Thelma Day, 79, of New Market, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Thelma was born April 3, 1920, in Pendinnis, Kansas, to Walter and Eva Lee Shane Bogart. She was united in marriage September 23, 1937, in Junction City, Kansas, to Charles Edward Day, who preceded her in death October 31, 1960. Thelma has lived the past 16 years in New Market, Iowa. She is survived by daughter, Ida Lee Darby and husband Donald of Paola, Kansas; son, Charles Kenneth Day and wife Sheri of Junction City, Kansas; daughters, Sharon Titus of Clarinda, Iowa, Bonnie Bix and husband Larry of New Market, Iowa, Juanita Yoho and husband Charles of Kempner, Texas, and Diana Monroe and husband Tommy of Reno, Nevada; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren; brothers, Harvey Ross Bogart of Godley, Texas, and Kenny Bogart of Roanoke, Texas. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, daughter in infancy, two sisters Bobby Faye McPherson and Mary Schneider and brother, Tom Bogart. Graveside services were held Saturday, January 8, at Highland Cemetery, Junction City, Kansas, with Pastor J.L. Hagemeister officiating. Memorials to be established.

Ivan S. Dow
Ivan S. Dow, 77, of Dubuque, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at his home. He was born on December 26, 1922, in Dropmore, Manitoba, Canada, the son of Sanford and Lena (Ferris) Dow. He married Evelyn Matz on September 13, 1942, in Franklin Grove, Illinois. During World War II he served in the 9th Army Amphibious Assault Group in the Aleutian Islands. He later served in the 10th Mountain Infantry in Italy. Mr. Dow worked for the city of Dubuque, retiring in 1986. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Dow, of Dubuque; daughters, Pamela (Tom) Fessler, of Dubuque, Iowa; Annette (Dave) Mundell, of Loganville, Ga., Cynthia (Vic) Fessler, of Gainesville, Ga., and Kimberly (David) Hobin, of Mount Airy, Md.; sons, Greg (Lynell) Dow, of Lancaster, Calif., and Jeff (Kim) Dow of Houston; thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul (Joetta) Dow of College Springs, Iowa; and a sister, Isabel Bloomfield, of Clarinda, Iowa. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Esther Dragoo
Esther Dragoo, 81, of Burlington Junction, Missouri, passed away Monday evening, May 1, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri. She was born May 26, 1918, near Elmo, Missouri, to William Rufus and Girtha Eugene Dilley Davis. She married Beryl Dragoo September 28, 1940, at Oregon, Missouri, and they would have shared sixty years in September of this year. She has lived her entire married life in Burlington Junction. She was a homemaker and attended the United Methodist Church at Burlington Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Melvin Davis, and a twin brother, Chester Davis. She is survived by her husband, Beryl, of the home in Burlington Junction; five daughters, Joan Meyer, Burlington Junction, Linda Lekey, Maryville, Sue Collins, Savannah, Missouri, Rita Hamilton, Burlington Junction, and Lavone Norris, Olathe, Kansas; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; her twin brothers, wife, Eva Heiman, Clarksdale, Missouri, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 4, at the United Methodist Church, Burlington Junction. Burial was in Clearmont Cemetery, Clearmont, Missouri. Jeannette Edwards
Alice Jeannette Edwards was born October 7, 1927, at Conway, Iowa, to Frank and Emma Belle (Sanger) Stafford. She died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa, following a brief illness. She was 72 years of age. Jeannette was a GTE operator for more than 25 years in the Clarinda office, retiring in 1977. That same year she married Darwin Pete Edwards. She was a member of Daughters of American Revolution, VFW Auxiliary, and Rebecca Circle. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Pete, of Red Oak, Iowa; son, Gary Sieving and his wife Tereasa of Mandeville, Louisiana; daughter, Marla Marns of Hastings, Iowa; grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew Sieving and Amber and Justin Marn; and sister, Genevieve Bratton of Carrollton, Texas; step children Linda Aberg of Amity, Oregon, Rick Edwards of Omaha, Nebraska, Terry Edwards of Sparks, Nevada, Larry Edwards of Gravity, Iowa, and Cindy Coleman of Gravity, Iowa; fourteen step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Doris Gooch and Dorothy Filbert. Memorials are suggested to the Clarinda Foundation.

Dorothy Jean Fidler-Jochim
Dorothy Jean (Purcell) Fidler-Jochim died at her home January 22, 2000, at the age of 74 years. She was born April 30, 1925, at Tarkio, Missouri. She was a factory worker in the Vancouver, Washington, area having retired in 1986. She was married to Jacob Jochim on July 21, 1965. He preceded her in death April 1997. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Fidler-Nelson of Hillsboro, Oregon, Carol Fidler-Ward of Vancouver, Washington, Elaine Fidler-Fredrich, Vancouver, Washington, and Linda Fidler-Kiemele of Vancouver, Washington; brother Jerome Purcell of California; sisters Janice Blake, California, Ruby Ayers of Kansas City, Missouri, Ruth Mueller, Veneta, Oregon, and Jenny Ventis, Arlington, Virginia; sister-in-law Frances Purcell, Portland, Oregon; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. St. Johns Funeral Home, Washington, was in charge of services.

Stella M. Fisher
Mrs. Stella M. Fisher, of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2000, at Saint Mary's Hospital, at the age of 85. Stella Marie Huseman was born August 3, 1914, in Clarinda, Iowa, to the late William and Clarra (List) Huseman. She was married to Richard Fisher on March 8, 1941 in Saginaw and he predeceased her November 30, 1955. She had been employed and retired from JCPenney, Co., Green Acres Plaza. She was a founding member of Peace Lutheran Church and its Ladies Guild, and a member of the JCPenney Retirees Club and Saginaw Travel Club. She enjoyed golfing, traveling and bridge. Surviving are four sons, three daughters and their spouses; Gerard (Lillian) Fisher, Saginaw; Patricia Murphy, Saginaw; Richard (Katherine) Fisher, Lake, Michigan; Rose Marie Fisher, Saginaw; Catherine (Jack) LeBreck, Saginaw; William (Pamela) Fisher, Poway, California; Dr. Robert (Peggy) Fisher, Scottsdale, Arizona; 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence Huseman, Baltimore, Maryland; one sister, Ruth (Kenneth) Hutfilz, Midland, Michigan. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Huseman. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 12, at Peace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Robert Eggers officiating. Howard Grant Freeman
Howard Freeman, 100, of Gravity, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Bedford Manor, Bedford, Iowa, where he had been a resident since 1994. Howard was born March 10, 1900 in Ravenwood, Missouri, to Thomas Grant and Lorena Idaville Goodin Freeman March 19, 1921. He was united in marriage to Lucy Ann Downing. She preceded him in death December 18, 1995. Howard was a farmer in the Gravity area. Survivors include children Wade Freeman and wife Shirley of Clarinda, Iowa, Herbert Freeman and wife Martha of Villisca, Iowa, Donald Freeman and wife Marty of Clarinda, Iowa, Vera Harper of McComb, Illinois, Vivian Bailey and husband Howard of St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Barbara Freeman of Clarinda, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucy, son Richard, and eight brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Ralph H. Freudenburg
Ralph Herman Freudenburg was born July 26, 1912, the son of George and Bertha Sump Freudenburg near Clarinda, Iowa. Ralph died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. He was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church on August 18, 1912, by Rev. C.F. Jaebker and confirmed on June 20, 1926 at the St. John Lutheran Church by Rev. T.J. Vogel. On February 10, 1943, he was married to Helen Hartstack of Clarinda, and they had two daughters, Elaine Armstrong and Thelma Graham. Ralph was a farmer, residing on the same farm 75 years until their move to Clarinda in 1993 and had been in his own home until February 29, 2000. Survivors include his wife Helen of the home and daughters Elaine Armstrong of Clarinda, Thelma Graham and husband Roger of Clarinda, one granddaughter, Melinda Shackelford and husband Tony of Clarinda, and a sister-in-law Edith Freudenburg of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Arnold in infancy, Ruben Freudenburg and Melvin Freudenburg. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, March 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Jaeckle officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Birge Orville Geer
Birge Orville Geer, 94 of Villisca, Iowa, died Saturday, July 8, 2000 at his home in Villisca. He was born December 1, 1905, near Norwich, Iowa, in Page County, the son of Charley and Laura Beck Geer. In 1929 Birge married Mary Ida Pearson in Peoria, Illinois. She preceded him in death in 1965. He worked for American Aviation in California during World War II. They moved to Shambaugh, Iowa, in 1947, where he worked as a self-employed mechanic. Birge retired in 1972, but kept active in his shop at home until his death. He also loved to mow the yard and do woodworking. Birge married Lola Kuhn in 1972. She preceded him in death in 1984. He is survived by his sons, Wayne Geer and his wife Margaret of Red Oak, Iowa, and Glenn Geer and wife Evonne of Duluth, Minn.; and a daughter, Laura Swift of Red Oak, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Frederick Swift, Jr., Wesley Thomas Swift, Louise Fredine Rabotinsky, Douglas Wayne Geer, Scott Edward, Lisa Ann Conry, DeEtta Keppers, Mitchell Geer, and Allen Geer; twenty great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; plus a half-brother, Eugene Geer of Yakima, Washington. Birge is preceded in death by his parents, wives Ida and Lola, two brothers Garfield and Carl; sister, Vera Kotowicz, and granddaughter, Linda Geer. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 12, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca with Pastor Albert Baker officiating. Burial was in the Summit Cemetery, Yorktown, Iowa. Michael J. Geer
Michael J. Geer, 48, of Hoensbroek, The Netherlands, died there on May 28, 2000. He was born July 10, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska. He lived in Clarinda, Iowa, until 1962 when his family moved to Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army as an x-ray technician. He married Rickie Fryters of The Netherlands in 1980. Survivors include his wife and son, Mikey, of The Netherlands; mother, Barbara Kaiser, of Thornton, Colorado; and sister, Linn Dawson, of Aurora, Colorado.

Walter L. Geer
Walter Geer, 94, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa, where he had been a resident since February 15, 2000. Walter had made his residence with his daughter since April 1995. Walter was born April 16, 1905, in Yorktown, Iowa, to Fred and Meta Spangenberg Geer, the oldest of 10 children. He was united in marriage June 10, 1925, to Ina M. Beery who preceded him in death August 19, 1995. Walter was a farmer in the Shambaugh, Clarinda, and Hawleyville areas. He moved to Clarinda in 1975. Walter was a long time member of Church of God, Shambaugh, Iowa, and was the oldest living member. He helped construct and rebuild the church. Survivors include his son Lowell Geer and wife Ardelle of Clarinda, daughter, Norma Clement and husband Carmen of Clarinda, six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Roberta Geer of Pleasanton, California. Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters, Susanna, Lena, brothers, Clyde, Leonard, Fred, Charley, Bill, Clarence, and Delbert. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 22, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Draper officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Marjorie Alice Gillette
Marjorie Alice Gillette was born May 5, 1924 in Montgomery County, Iowa, the daughter of Harley Guy and Letha Genevra Lewis McCoy. She died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center, where she had been a resident since June 1999. Marjorie married Bernard Gillette June 12, 1953, in Villisca, Iowa. He preceded her in death October 16, 1989. She graduated from Villisca Community Schools in 1942. Marjorie had been a personnel secretary for Star Ag in Red Oak until she retired. She is survived by her children: Gregory Gillette of Orlando, FL; Roma Benoit and husband Ed of Muscoutah, Ill.; Gene Gillette and wife Brigette of Waynesville, Mo.; and Gail Knapp and husband Tom of Villisca, Iowa; twenty grandchildren, several great grandchildren and a brother, Harley McCoy and wife Phyllis of California and a special friend, Susan Screbner and her husband Dave of David City, Nebr. Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard, brother Lewis McCoy, sisters Alvah Brownlee and Dorothy McFarland and two brothers in infancy Calvin and Carroll and one great grandson, Mitchell Knapp. Funeral services were held Friday, February 25, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca with Rev. Iva Mae Goff
Iva Mae Goff, 84, Burlington Junction, Missouri, passed away Saturday afternoon, August 12, 2000 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri. She was born April 13, 1915, at Isadora, Missouri, to Robert R. and Agnes Clark Shipley and lived most of her life in that area before moving to Burlington Junction the summer of 1973. She attended Grant City High School and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1933. She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Burlington Junction. She was married to L. Jay Goff April 29, 1939 at Rock Port, Missouri, and he preceded her in death. She was a farmer and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jay in 1966, and three brothers, R. Willie Shipley in 1983, Pete Shipley in 1982, and Alton Shipley in 1993. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Moses of Burlington Junction, a foster son, Terry Wyer, Burlington Junction, two granddaughters, a great-granddaughter, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, August 15, at Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel with burial at the Honey Grove Cemetery, Grant City, Missouri. Arrangements were under the direction of Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel.

Belle Gossard
Belle Gossard, age 90 of Creston, Iowa, died May 16, 2000, at Crest haven Care Center, Creston, Iowa. She was born January 27, 1910, at Afton, Iowa, to Marion Hess and Helen Gummers Hess. She graduated from Afton High School in 1927. February 23, 1930 she married C.L. (Slim) Gossard in Creston, Iowa. She was employed for fourteen years at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Red Oak Police Department. She lived in Red Oak for twenty-five years and Creston for twenty years. She was an active member of the Red Oak and Creston Methodist churches. She enjoyed attending gun shows with her husband. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1983, two brothers, Joseph and Marshall Hess, sister-in-law Madeline Hess, and sons-in-law Kenny Butler and Don Frink. She is survived by her children Elaine Butler of Clarinda, and Jan Frink of Creston, Iowa. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 20, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home, Creston, with Terry Anderson officiating. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Mt. Etna, Iowa.

Drexel Eldon Gray
Drexel Gray, 84, of Savannah, Missouri, formerly of College Springs, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at his home. Drexel was born October 27, 1915, on a farm near Pickering, Missouri, to Burley and Lelia Oliphant Gray. He was married to Sylvia Coffett in 1935 and later divorced. There are two children from this union. Drexel was united in marriage January 16, 1958, to Lois Prater Owens, who survives. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home, five children, Marion Gray of St. Joseph, Missouri, Marcia Doberwitz of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Basil Owens, Maryville, Missouri, Glen David Owens, College Springs, Iowa, Connie Taylor, Savannah, Missouri; nineteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Odgen and husband Don of Branson, Missouri, and Arcile Flanery and husband Elmer of Savannah, Missouri; two nieces and two nephews and other relatives and friends. Drexel farmed for several years. He also was a good automobile body man. Drexel had his own shop in Savannah and College Springs and had been employed by Snyder Body Shop, Clarinda, Iowa, and Mac Malloy Motor Company, Shenandoah, Iowa. Drexel's hobbies were bluegrass country music, traveling, fishing, hunting, and reading. He loved his family and friends very much. He was a good father, husband and friend. He will be sadly missed by everyone. Drexel was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law, Tommie Kirsch, and infant son, three brothers-in-laws, Willard Powell, George "Jim" Prater, Harlan Prater, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Friday, April 14, 2000, at the Presbyterian Church, College Springs, with Rev. John Duling officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs. Harold Guenther
Funeral services for Harold Guenther, age 91 of Bedford, Iowa, who died Sunday, May 28, 2000 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas, were held Wednesday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Allman officiating. Interment was held in the Fairview cemeteryin Bedford. Memorials may be directed to the Harold Guenther Baseball Complex in Bedford. Harold Alfred Guenther was born March 25, 1909, in Shambaugh, Iowa, the son of Allie Guenther and Anna McNeese Guenther. Harold grew up in the rural Shambaugh/Clarinda area graduating from the Clarinda High School in 1927. He furthered his education with several courses of study from various business colleges. Harold worked for the Swift Packing Company in Clarinda and the State Institute in Woodward during the Great Depression. On September 24, 1935 he was united in marriage to Anna Twaddle in Maryville, Missouri. Harold and Ann lived their entire married life in Bedford with the exception of the one year he managed the Cudahy Packing Plant in Winfield, Iowa. He eventually managed Cudahys in Bedford until 1958 when he went into hog breeding. Harold bred Duroc Hogs, being well known for his quality breeding stock. He continued to operate until his health forced him to slow down. He then moved to Lawrence, Kansas, to be near his son. Carl Cummings baptized Harold in 1995. He was a member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge #156 A.F. & A.M. and the Triangle Chapter #68, Royal Arch, Masons. He was a member of the Bedford Lions Club, and the Duroc Hog Breeders Association. Harold also served as former President for the Bedford School Board. Harold loved baseball, having played both as a child and as an adult. He was very active when "Town Team Ball" was popular, helping to organize the semi-professional team from Bedford. Harold is survived by his son Greg of Lawrence, Kansas; a daughter-in-law, Norma Guenther of Lawrence, Kansas; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Preceding Harold in death were his wife Ann in 1984; a son, John Guenther in 1991; his parents, Allie and Anna; a brother, Glenn Guenther, and two sisters, Gladys Borden and Dorothy Cooper.

Betty Jo (Hurst) Hale
Betty Jo was born to Guy William and Lillie Illingsworth Hurst August 8, 1923. She departed this life May 17, 2000. She was preceded in death by her sister, Arawanna Nelson; brothers, Arlo, Paul, Wendell Hurst. One sister survives, Mrs. Ella Mae Herman of Paso Robles, California; and local cousin, Mrs. Scottie (Violet) Eickemeyer. While living in Clarinda her father, Guy Hurst, as well as Uncle Don and brother Wendell were engineers of the CB&Q Railroad. Graveside services were held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000 at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, California, with Pastor Tom Rothhaar officiating. Services were arranged by White & Day Mortuary, Manhattan Beach, California.

Lula Rozella Hamm
Lula Rozella Hamm, 88, of Iowa City and a resident of Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center died there on June 5, 2000 at 9:20 p.m. following a long illness. Services were held Friday, June 9, 2000 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda by Pastor Gail L. Mitchell of Iowa City. Burial was in College Springs Maple Hill Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, George; two sons, Carl of Campbell, Nebraska, Merlin and his wife Donna of Iowa City; two daughters, Judy Glasgow and husband Bud of Sidney, Iowa and Nancy Martin and her husband Pete of Iowa City and granddaughter Candy Bowers of Iowa City; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Bowman, Roberta Tibbetts and Viola Hatfield, all in Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and three brothers and a daughter-in-law. Lula Rozella was born March 23, 1912, around Burlington Junction, Missouri, the daughter of Carl Tobias and Mable Grace Spangler. She grew up on a farm near Burlington Junction. She married George Ellis Hamm on August 17, 1933 in Shenandoah, Iowa on KFNF Radio Station. They made their home in Braddyville, Iowa and later after starting their family moved to College Springs. Rozella had a great love for children and spread her caring beyond her family by choosing a life of being a loving and trusted childcare provider for many. They moved to Clarinda in 1960 where she continued her occupation and then continuing after moving to Iowa City in 1978 and finally retiring in 1995. Rozella was a grandmother to far more than her immediate family. She was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Clarinda and Bethany Baptist Church in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established in Rozella's name.

Dorothy Maxine Hanson
Dorothy Maxine Hanson, 85, of New Market, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa, where she had resided for two years. Maxine was born July 13, 1914, southwest of New Market, Iowa, to Ora Elbert and Olive Blanch Thompson Dougherty. She graduated from New Market High School and had attended the Clarinda Community College. May 23, 1940 she was united in marriage to Lorence Hanson, who survives. Maxine taught in several one room schools in the New Market area, was a 4-H leader in Taylor County, a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years and a member of Rebecca Lodge for 50 years. She enjoyed gardening, loved reading and had been in several neighborhood clubs. Over the years she had attended Maple Grove Methodist Church at Guss and the New Market Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, daughter Brenda Jean Steeber and husband Roger of Coon Rapids, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Marie Carpenter and Geneva Beery and a brother, Francis Dougherty. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 15, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Lowell Schaaf officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Guss, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Maple Grove Methodist Church or to Goldenrod Manor.

James Henn
James Dale Henn, age 67, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away at his home in Clarinda, Iowa, Sunday morning, June 11, 2000. A private family burial service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Shenandoah Home Health Hospice. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, was in charge of arrangements. Jim was born December 20, 1932, near Northboro, Iowa, to Fred Robert and Ethel James Henn. Jim was a graduate of Braddyville High School and Clarinda Junior College and attended Northwest Missouri State University 1957-1958. He served in the United States Army 1953-1955. November 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Sue Lynn at the Farragut Methodist Church. Jim farmed and later was a block man for Allis-Chalmers and for 15 years was a truck driver, most recently driving for Heartland Express. Jim had a variety of interests including wood working and classical music. He had been a very active member of the Saddle Club and loved horses. Jim was a Kiwanis member and had served on the Page County Fair Board and the Page County Rural Water Board. Survivors include his wife, Sue, of the home; daughter, Lynn Theobald of Papillion, Nebraska; son, Staff Sergeant Lance Henn and wife Kim of Tacoma, Washington; three grandchildren, Miranda Theobald, Alicia Henn, Allison Henn; mother, Ethel Lee of Princeton, North Carolina; sister, Janice Miller and husband Joe of Princeton, North Carolina. Preceding him in death were his father, one brother, John Robert Henn.
