Laura Mae Fengel
Graveside memorial services for Laura Mae Fengel of California were held Monday, August 18, 2003 at the Villisca Cemetery in Villisca, IA, with Pastor Albert Baker officiating. Interment was at the Villisca Cemetery. Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca was in charge of arrangements.
Laura Mae Fengel was born December 6, 1902 in Villisca, the daughter of Charles Lloyd and Mary Charlotte (Vigor) Raney, and died September 16, 2002 at Castro Valley Care Center in California.
She attended country school at Hazel Dell No. 8 in Montgomery County for seven years, completing the 8th grade at the Lincoln Building in Villisca. She graduated from the Villisca High School in 1922. The following year she began teaching in Montgomery County and taught four years at Wallin. She was then married to Walter F. Rockwell of Red Oak, IA. He died on their first wedding anniversary at her parents' home in Villisca. She continued teaching 14 years in various schools, the last at Hazel Dell, where she had attended grade school. She enrolled at Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA, but returned home to help care for her seriously ill mother. After her mother's death, she remained to keep house for her father and brother, Lou, until her father's death.
She resumed teaching until 1940, when she married Gale J. Fengel. They moved to Fort Dodge, IA; later to Boone, IA. In 1942, they moved to San Leandro, CA, where Gale worked in the shipyards during World War II. Later, Gale worked in sheet metal until he retired in 1966.
Laura and Gale were a loving couple and were active in various clubs in California - a camera club for 25 years; a gem and mineral club for 29 years; a travel club; and two choral groups. Gale died November 15, 1988. Laura continued living in San Leandro until she entered Castro Valley Care Center in 1994.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jessie M. Park and Pearl Iona Egleston; one brother, John Louis Raney; several nephews, nieces and cousins; her first husband, Walter F. Rockwell; and her second husband of many years, Gale J. Fengel.
She is survived by her nephew, Norman Park and wife Gaynell of Alcova, WY; niece, Geraldine Zolberg of Idaho; great-nephews Mark Park of Alcova, Blake Park of Seattle, WA, Judge David Park and Dwain Park of Casper, WY, and Tony Park of Colorado; great-niece, Danene Park of Bellevue, WA; four great-great nephews and two great-great nieces; and second cousin James Raney and wife LaDonna of Villisca.
HAROLD (BIBS) MINARD
Funeral services for Harold (Bibs) Minard of Clarinda, IA were held Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev. John Clark officiating.
Burial was in the Hawleyville Cemetery. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
George Harold (Bibs) Minard was born March 8, 1909 at Hawleyville, IA, to Albert and Mary (Kapple) Minard, and died Monday, August 4, 2003, at Westridge Care and Rehab Center in Clarinda. He was united in marriage December 11, 1929 at the Methodist Parsonage in Clarinda to Iva Irene Fleck. Bibs farmed from 1930-1952 and then operated a road grader for Page County until his retirement.
He enjoyed his children and grandchildren. Preceding Bibs in death were his parents, wife, Iva Irene (1979), one grandson, two step-grandsons, four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include his children: Edwin Minard and wife Donna of Council Bluffs, IA; Dorothy Compton and husband Gene of Tucson, AZ; Clyde Minard and wife Ursula of Norwalk, IA; Darlene Garrett and husband Wayne of Altoona, IA; Ron Minard and wife Madonna of Cabot, AR; John Minard and wife Teresa of Clarinda; Elaine Luzmoor and husband Richard of Clarinda; twenty grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Hawleyville Cemetery.
DONALD SMITH HELLER
Funeral services for Donald Heller of Corydon, IA were held Thursday, May 22, 2003 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Markum officiating.
Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Donald Smith Heller, son of Carl and Ida (Porter) Heller, was born in New Market, IA, on October 7, 1928, and passed away on May 19, 2003, at the Corydon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Corydon, IA.
Don was united in marriage to Rhoda Patricia Joy Peck in 1973 in Des Moines, IA. Rhoda preceded him in death on September 19, 1997. Don was a graduate of Villisca High School in Villisca, IA, and of Central College in Pella, IA. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the Army. He lived most of his life in Des Moines, where he was head of security at Broadlawn Hospital for 25 years. After his retirement, he and Rhoda moved to Mercer, MO in 1992, where he was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a stepson, Harold Clark. He is survived by three stepsons: William Cousins and Burton Clark and wife Martha of Mercer, MO; and Richard Clark of Kansas City, MO; a stepdaughter, Karen McCrea and husband Roy of Cummings, IA; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; three brothers: Wilbur, Darwin, and Murle; and two sisters, Eleanor and Dorothy.
Doris Thuman
Doris Thuman, age 76, of Clarinda, Ia, died early Saturday morning, August 2, 2003 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab Center in Clarinda.
She was born July 5, 1927 in Page County, Iowa, the daughter of James and Alma (Fisher) Goodwin. She attended Villisca schools and on December 17, 1943 she was united in marriage to Leo Thuman in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple had lived south of Stanton until their health declined and they moved to Clarinda. Doris was a housewife and raised three children: Jim, Carroll, and Mary. She was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church in Clarinda.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leo on July 31, 2000; and a sister, Mildred McConkey. Survivors include her three children: Jim Thuman and his wife Marilyn of Clarinda, Iowa; Carroll Thuman and his wife Joan of Stanton, Iowa; Mary L. Jones of Malvern, Iowa; four grandchildren: Angela and Ashley Thuman; Sandra Vrbsky, and Tammy Jones; four great grandchildren: Amber and Matthew Vrbsky; Kimberly and Miranda Jones; sister, Lois Ewing and her husband Charles of Glenwood, Iowa; and a brother, Arthur Goodwin of Hastings, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 4, 2003 at St. Clare Catholic Church in Clarinda with Father Thomas Coenen officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Corning, Iowa.

Lamont Raymond Wallin

Son of Raymond E. and Ruth E. (Sunderman), Lamont Wallin, was born January 9, 1943 in Clarinda, Iowa. He died suddenly on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 in Montgomery County, Iowa south of Stanton at the age of 60 years, 6 months and 22 days. Lamont was raised in Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1960. He attended C.E. School of Commerce in Omaha, Nebraska. He served his country during Vietnam in the United States Army. Lamont later graduated from University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in Accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant. Lamont was united in marriage to Suzanne Purvis on February 24, 1982. Lamont was the General Manager for Kutak-Rock Law Firm in Omaha, Nebraska for many years. After his retirement from Kutak-Rock Law Firm he continued to farm and raise cattle, and was known as "The French Farmer". He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa and most recently attended Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton. He was also a member of the American Legion Ernie Johnson Post #406 in Stanton.
He was preceded in death by his Father. Lamont is survived by three daughters; Sara, Sandra and Samantha all of Council Bluffs, Iowa, his mother, Mrs. Ruth Wallin of Stanton, Iowa, two sisters; Janet Dinville and husband Duane of Stanton, Iowa and Jeanie Fritscher and husband Eugene of Stanton, Iowa, a nephew, Matthew and wife Amy of Grimes, Iowa, a niece, Andrea and husband Scott of Omaha, Nebraska, a special friend, Marilyn Mickey of Carson, Iowa, other relatives and a host of friends. May God bless his memory and give strength to those who mourn.

Phyllis Ilene Weaver was born January 7, 1936 in Shenandoah, IA, the daughter of Paul and Anetta (Babcock) Delehant, and died July 4, 2003 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.
Phyllis had graduated from Shenandoah High School. She had worked for the Holiday Inn in Red Oak, Uniroyal in Red Oak for five years and Circle J for two years. Phyllis retired in 1992.
She enjoyed doing puzzles and was a member of the Sunshine Girls coffee club.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Norma Smith.
Phyllis is survived by her children: Candi Fast of Aurora, CO; Rick Weaver and Mary Garey, Teena Weaver and Mike Mackey of Villisca; and Randy Weaver and wife Tammy of Farragut, IA; nine grandchildren; brothers, Virgil Delehant and wife Beverly of Shenandoah; Harold Delehant of California; Doris Rupple and Skip of Washington; Sonda Kugler and husband Leon of Omaha, NE; Donna Engeke and husband Ted of Wisconsin; Sharon Hiser and husband Gary of Shenandoah; Angie Hamilton and husband Boyd of Dubuque, IA.

Don Devine
Funeral services for Don Devine of Villisca, IA will be held Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the Prescott United Church in Prescott, IA. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery near Villisca. Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca was in charge of arrangements.
Don Devine was born July 5, 1943, in Red Oak, IA, the son of Clark Truman and Esther Delores (Anderson) Devine, and died at his home in Villisca Sunday, July 13, 2003.
Don was a 1961 graduate of Villisca High School. He received his associates degree from Southwestern in Red Oak.
He married Sharon Chilcott May 27, 1967 in Prescott. Sharon died May 8, 1991.
Don was currently working for Romech in Red Oak. He had worked there for the past 29 years. He was a member of the Adams County Genealogical Society, and was currently serving as President. He was also a member of the Prescott United Church. Don enjoyed time with his grandchildren. His hobbies were reading, collecting comic gbooks, tractors, bells, and shot glasses.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Don is survived by his sons: James Devine and wife Tonya of Underwood, IA and David Devine of Villisca; grandchildren: Carabeth Devine, Nickolas, and Michael Rhodes, and Jessica Devine.
