KAREN LOUELLA WELCH
A memorial service was held for Karen LouElla Welch Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the Rose Chapel in West Plains, MO, with Rev. Fred Hamby officiating.
Karen LouElla Welch, the daughter of Charles Hughs and Mildred Hazel (Snell) Tunnell, was born October 12, 1946 at Hamburg, IA, and died May 28, 2004.
She was married to Merlyn Welch on May 11, 1964 in Nebraska City, NE.
Mrs. Welch's family were her life and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She was a member of the Nazarene faith. The Welchs had lived in Villisca.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her husband Merlyn Welch; three sons, Dan Welch and wife Angie of Moody, MO, Ray Welch and wife Robin of Sidney, IA, and Don Welch and wife Tanya of West Plains, MO; seven grandchildren; three brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
IRENE ARDEST SHELLBERG
Irene Ardest Shellberg, the daughter of Sam and Fannie (Watson) Jensen, was born January 2, 1922 at Harlan, Iowa. She died on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at her home in Stanton, Iowa.
Irene lived in the Walnut area, moving to Griswold in 1936. She graduated from Griswold High School. Irene was united in marriage to Robert Lee Shellberg on January 11, 1941 at Maryville, Missouri. They farmed in the Griswold and Elliott communities until 1949 when they moved to a farm just west of Stanton. Irene was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church. Irene had worked for Connor's Clothing store in Red Oak for 12 years. She was active in Stanton Senior Citizens, Friendly Study Club, the patient advocate board at Stanton Care Center and the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert on December 27, 1995 and a granddaughter, Cathy Sue Foote.
Irene is survived by her children; Janice Foote and husband Terry of Bellevue, NE, Diana Sabo and husband Donald of Stanton, IA, Gary Shellberg and wife Jody of Red Oak, IA and Sandra Nelson and husband Scott of Atlantic, IA; 4 grandchildren, Michael Foote and wife Carla of Stanton, IA, Randy Foote of Stanton, IA, Jeff James and wife Brooke of Lincoln, NE and Kyle Nelson of Atlantic, IA; a great-granddaughter, Bailey Foote of Stanton, IA; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Smith of Atlantic, IA, other relative and a host of friends.
IRENE INA JOHNSON
Funeral services for Irene I. Johnson of Villisca were held Friday, June 11, 2004 at the Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak, with the Rev. Sarah Walker Brown officiating. Burial was in the Strand Cemetery. Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Irene Ina Johnson, the daughter of Simon and Alma M. (Carlson) Anderson, was born January 9, 1921 in Page County, IA. She died on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.
Irene attended school in Stanton. She was united in marriage to Milton "Buddy" Johnson on May 10, 1941 in Maryville, MO. They then moved to a farm north of Villisca, residing there for the past 63 years. Irene and Buddy loved to travel, and took trips to Norway and Sweden. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, shopping and eating out. Irene was a member of the Strand Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved quilting for the church, and attending the Annual Bazaar.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Irene is survived by a son, Donald Johnson of Villisca, IA; two daughters, Jan Arkfeld and husband Ron of Defiance, Iowa and Lana Bruning of Council Bluffs, IA; 4 grandchildren, Diana Olson of Atlanta, GA, Steven Olson of Omaha, NE, Ryan Bruning of Ft. Worth, TX and Jonas Bruning of Treynor, IA; a brother, Arnold Anderson and wife Kathryn of Red Oak, IA, a brother-in-law, Jimmy Johnson and wife Doris of Tucson, AZ, sister-in-law and special friend, Anna Johnson of Villisca, IA, nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

IRENE GENEVIEVE CARLSON
Funeral services for Irene G. Carlson of Elliott, IA were held Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, IA, with Pastor Gordon Scott officiating. Burial was in the Essex Cemetery. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Irene Genevieve Carlson was born January 26, 1908 near Stennett, Iowa the daughter of Emil and O'Telia (Swanson) Peterson, and died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
She was raised in the Stennett area graduating from Stennett High School in 1925. Irene attended Nebraska Weslyan College for 2 years and taught country school before her marriage to Wallace Carlson in February of 1930. To this union 5 children were born. Irene raised her family in Montgomery County, Iowa until moving to Loveland, Colorado in 1955. When the children were grown, Irene went back to school graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a teaching degree in 1959. She then taught school in Colorado until her retirement in 1973. Irene moved back to Elliott, Iowa in 1974 where she lived until she moved to Vista Gardens Care Center in 2000. She moved to the Stanton Care Center in 2001. Irene was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church, various church circles, Retired Teachers Association, former member of the Order of Eastern Star, Navy Mothers and Research Club. She enjoyed playing the piano her whole life and entertaining the other residents at the nursing home.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Wallace Carlson on January 10, 1967; 2 sisters: Helen Hoffman and Phyllis Franklin; and 3 brothers: Maurice, Vernon and Donald Peterson.
Survivors include her children: James Carlson and wife Helen of Nodaway, Iowa; Philip Carlson and wife Carolyn of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Lowell Carlson and wife Diana of Broomfield, Colorado; Janet Stout and husband Marion of Wakeeney, Kansas; and Randy Carlson and wife Sandy of Loveland, Colorado; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Jean Kerr and husband Don of Manilla, Iowa; and Marilyn Lemke and husband Jerry of Des Moines, Iowa; and brother: Kenneth Peterson and wife Ruth of Elliott, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Elliott United Methodist Church.
DONALD BROWN
Services for Donald Dean Brown of Emerald Bay, TX, were held May 24, 2004 at Emerald Bay Community Church with Dr. Leonard Molone officiating. Burial will be in Grant, IA at a later date.
Service arrangements were under direction of Hilliard Funeral Home.
Donald Brown was born August 26, 1918, in Cass County, IA, to James Edward and Maude Helen (Loomis) Brown, and died May 21, 2004 in Tyler, TX. He was a member of Emerald Bay Community Church and Golden Tees. He was a former resident of Grant, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Kenneth Brown, Lester Brown and his twin, Dow Brown.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Davis Brown of Emerald Bay; son, Jerry L. Brown of Des Moines, IA; daughters: Karen Kreitner of Emerald Bay and Sue Seelko of Arlington, TX; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY RUTH HENRY
Funeral services for Dorothy Ruth Henry of Waukegan, IL were held Friday, June 4, 2004 at Peterson & Patch Funeral Home in Waukegan. Interment was in the Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville, IL.
Dorothy Ruth Henry was born February 1, 1927 in Grant, IA, to Harry and Hazel (Amrine) Waage, and died Sunday, May 30, 2004.
She had been a Waukegan resident since 1960. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #792.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elwyn Henry; sisters, Mary Jane Parrott and Betty Rhamy.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, David Henry and wife Ann of Lake Villa, IL, Dan Henry Sr. and wife Chris of Gurnee, IL; longtime companion, Marvin Vettesse of Waukegan; grandchildren: Brian Henry and wife Milly of Waukegan, Cory Henry and wife Kelly of Antioch, IL, Daniel Henry Jr. and wife Jeanne of Gurnee, IL, KT Henry of Gurnee, IL; great-grandchildren: Emily, Evan, and Abigail Henry; sister, Margaret Neill and husband Tom of Nebraska; brother, John Waage and wife Mary of Kansas; sister-in-law, Marjorie Dale of Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
VIVIEN CORRINE PYNER
At her request, no formal service were held for Coquille, OR, resident Vivien Corrine Pyner. Vivien was born June 4, 1917, in Harlan, IA, one of 15 children born to Gustuv and Emma Froyd. She died May 25, 2004 in Coquille.
Vivien was reared and educated in Iowa. She graduated from Parsons College with a teaching certificate. On Sept. 16, 1939, she married Bill Pyner in Edina, MO. He preceded her in death in 1972. They lived in California for many years, where she raised her family. She moved to Coquille, where she had lived for the past 20 years.
Vivien is survived by her daughters, Pam and David McKiney of Coquille and Paige Pyner of Oakland, CA; sisters, Alice Ashin of Arlington, VA, Jini Westerlund of Villisca, IA, Ardis Bryan of Sun City, FL, Lillian Day of Villisca, and Shirley Shafton of Arlington; brothers, Frank Froyd of Denver and Russ Froyd of Des Moines, IA; grandson, Kevin McKiney of St Louis; and several nieces and nephews.
