Martha L. Brooks
Private family services were held Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at the McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Prophetstown, IL, with Rev. Sandy Harbour, pastor of United Methodist Church in Prophetstown, officiating. Burial was in Leon Cemetery rural Prophetstown.
Martha L. Brooks of Prophetstown died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center, Prophetstown. She was born on September 2, 1913 in Massena, IA, the daughter of Andrew Z. and Nellie (Bowen) Scott.
She married Earl Brooks. Mrs. Brooks enjoyed crocheting and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving is her husband Earl of Prophetstown; two sons, Ernest (Gail) Brooks of Prophetstown and Rodney (Donna) Brooks of Rock Falls; two sisters, Viola Findley of Villisca, IA and Vivian Shepherd of Council Bluffs, IA; one brother, Warren (Lee) Scott of Portland, OR; two grandchildren, Melissa Brooks of Sterling and Jeremy (Kelly) Brooks of Prophetstown; two great grandchildren, Koby and Braiden Brooks of Prophetstown.
She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew L and Nellie (Bowen) Scott and five brothers Verne, George, Orval, Earl, and Harry and two sisters Olive Fidler and Mabel Geary.
Alan Bradley Wolfe
Funeral services for Alan Bradley Wolfe were held March 22, 2004, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, IA, with Don Barnett officiating. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Alan Wolfe was born in Clarinda, IA, on January 25, 1949, to Bradley and Betty (Ballenger) Wolfe, and died on March 18, 2004, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Alan graduated from Villisca High School in 1967. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mortuary science. Alan was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and worked with his parents at Wolfe Funeral Home until they retired and sold the business in 1981. Alan then became a feed salesman for many years. He was currently employed by Ag Pro Corporation where he had worked for the last eleven years.
Alan was preceded in death by this father, grandparents A.B. and Ressie Wolfe, Earl and Mary Ballenger and great niece Maggie Lynn Soll.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Wolfe of Villisca; daughter Casey Ferguson and husband Matt of Omaha, NE; son Adrian Wolfe and fiancé Norma Rae Winther of Kellerton, IA; brother Lynn Wolfe and wife Vickie of Villisca. Nieces Aimee Mauderly and husband Cody of Villisca; Emily Soll of Red Oak; Erin Bowden and husband Todd of Villisca; and Kelley Wolfe and fiancé Eric Kline of Ames, IA. Also an aunt, LaVaughn Ruckman of Freeport, IL, and six grand nieces and nephews.
Hattie Pauline Clark
Funeral services for Hattie Pauline Clark of Villisca, IA, were held March 22, 2004, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with the Rev. Robert Beard officiating. Burial was at the Villisca Cemetery.
Hattie Pauline Clark was born December 24, 1909, in Taylor County, IA, to Oscar and Cora May (Brand) Akers. She died March 18, 2004, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center.
Hattie married Leo Clark on December 14, 1937, in Clarinda, IA. To this union two children were born, Betty and Patricia. Her hobbies were sewing, quilt making and crocheting.
Hattie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Ollie Akers, Hazel Sexton, Helen May Savage, Gertie Weil and Evelyn Thompson; and brothers Oscar Wayne Akers and Cecil Akers.
She is survived by her daughters Betty Curtis and husband George of East Islip, NY, and Patricia Finkle and husband Carl of Earlville, IL; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. Also three sisters, Coral Bollinger of Maysville, MO, Bernita Ritnour of Omaha, NE, and Edna Poston and husband Dean of Gravity, IA.
Memorials may be directed to the Villisca Fire and Rescue.
James Louis Means
Family services have been held for James Louis Means of Chico, CA.
James Louis Means was born in Villisca, IA, on August 14, 1922 to Roy and Verna (Enarson) Means. He died on January 25, 2004, in Chico, CA.
Jim graduated from Villisca High School with the class of 1940. He then attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1943. He joined the U.S. Navy, and took his midshipman's schooling at Notre Dame University, after which he was commissioned an ensign. He served as a navigator on the USS Casa Grande. In 1946 he moved to San Francisco, where he worked as an accountant for the Shell Oil Company. Jim and his first wife, Lorraine, gave birth to a daughter, Nina Means. Lorraine died at the time of the birth of their second child. On September 14, 1957, he married Barbara Ann Camaraota in Reno. In 1976, he started working for the County of Marin until he retired in 1988 and moved, with his wife, to Chico, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and infant son.
Jim is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara Means of Chico; his son, Lane Means and daughter-in-law, Mary Bennett of Sonoma, CA; two daughters, Nina Means of Sacramento and Lisa Guastella of Chico, CA, and his grandson, Benjamin Guastella also of Chico. He also has several cousins in Villisca and southwest Iowa.
Hattie Vanderhoof
Funeral services for Hattie Vanderhoof of Red Oak, IA, were held Monday, March 8, 2004, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chris Burgett officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Hattie Zearilene Vander-hoof was born June 13, 1929, in Red Oak, the daughter of Zearil and Hattie (Paulsen-Lassen) Harding. She died Friday, March 5, 2004 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.
Hattie attended school in Coburg, IA, and was a lifelong resident of the Red Oak area. Hattie was united in marriage to Keith Vanderhoof on February 14, 1946 in Seneca, KS. She worked for McNeily Seed Corn Company for several years before working for Union Carbide. She worked for 25 years, retiring in 1980. Hattie was a member of the Red Oak Eagles Lodge, enjoyed spending time with her family, enjoyed latch hooks and going to the casino.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Walt and Otto Lassen; sister, Ruth Strunge; and daughter, Georgia Bruce.
Hattie is survived by her husband of 58 years, Keith Vanderhoof of Red Oak; children, Diane Hicks and husband Jim of Red Oak, Dennis Vanderhoof of Red Oak, Jeff Vanderhoof and wife Amy of Villisca, and Karla Bentson of Red Oak; thirteen grandchildren: Barb Wilson, Allen Hale, Brian Hale, Bobbie Bruce, Kevin Vanderhoof, Rhonda Sowers, Deanna Evans, Daniel Vanderhoof, Lisa Vander-hoof, Scott Vanderhoof, Jill Vanderhoof, Ashley Bent-son, and Bailey Bentson; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Glea Lassen of Arlington, VA, and Ardis Bangston and husband Howard of Villisca; a brother John Harding and wife Janie of Red Oak; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Fire Department and Rescue Unit.

Elester Wilson King
Funeral services for Elester Wilson King were held February 16, 2004, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, IA, with the Pastor Terry Schoenfeld officiating. Internment was at the Villisca Cemetery.
Elester King was born on December 18, 1911, in Trenton, MO, to Edgar and Allie King. He died February 13, 2004, in Atlantic, IA.
Les served in the army in France and Germany during World War II. He was with the Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion, 137th Infantry. Les was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, FAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon and Combat Infantry Badge. Les lived much of his life in Villisca, IA, until after his marriage to Estalene English in August 1934, in Red Oak, IA, when they moved to Atlantic. He worked for the meat department in grocery stores in Villisca and Atlantic and at the Anita Locker Plant.
Les was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister Lucille and sisters-in-law Helen Jeffery and Blanche Taylor.
Les is survived by niece Jane Kinney and husband Charles of Lost Nation, IA, and nephews Jim Orstad and wife Mae of Indianapolis, and Nick Taylor and wife Carol of Omaha. Also many grand nieces and nephews.
Roland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Scott Allen Diehl
Graveside services for Scott Allen Diehl were held Monday, March 8, 2004, at the Orient Cemetery in Orient, IA, with Gordon Thomas officiating. Scott Allen Diehl, the son of Stevens and Alice (Asman) Diehl, was born April 8, 1928 at Pomeroy, OH. He died on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.
Scott was raised in Montgomery County and attended High School at Red Oak. He entered the United States Army and served during the Korean War. Scott was united in marriage to Ruth Clark in l950. She died in 1976. He later was united in marriage to Rosella who died in l979. Scott lived in Creston and Orient, where he worked for Adair County Roads Department and operated a road grader. He later moved to Nodaway, living there until 2002 when he moved to Stanton. Scott was baptized at the Hawthorne United Methodist Church.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and a brother, Wayne.
Scott is survived by a brother, Elwin Diehl of Red Oak, IA; two sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Reubenking and Mrs. Mildred Connell, both of Red Oak, Iowa; and nieces, nephews and other relatives along with a host of friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Rescue Unit.
