ROY JOSEPH MILLER
Roy Joseph Miller was born April 5, 1906. The oldest son of Joe and Ann Miller. He grew to adulthood in the Mount Ayr area. He served in the Army during WWII spending nearly all of his time in Hawaii. After his return home he was united in marriage to Marie Bennett on October 25, 1945. To this union were born three children Dixie Lee, Ricky Lynn (Passed away in infancy) and Dennis Roy.
He farmed and worked at farm related jobs all of his life. Upon his marriage they farmed in the Bayard, Iowa area. In 1951 they moved to the family farm near Mount Ayr. In 1955 they moved to a farm near Blockton, Iowa. In 1969 they moved to a house in Blockton. In 1993 they moved to Clay Center to be near their daughter. In May of 1996, with Marie's failing health they moved to Hamilton Manor in Aurora, Nebraska. Although Marie passed away a few days later Roy had resided there for over four years. Roy truly enjoyed his life wherever he was. He was a wonderful, kind and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He also was a great spirit at Hamilton Manor and very much enjoyed his years there.
He was proceeded in death by his infant son Ricky Lynn, his wife Marie and his parents Ann and Joe; his siblings Lee, Mary, Bernice, Fern, and Gladys. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Dixie Burgmaier and husband Marshal of Clay Center, Nebraska; his son Dennis of Pompano Beach, Florida; two granddaughters Angela Biester and husband Gary of Clay Center and Brenda Nichols and husband John of Lincoln, Nebraska; two great granddaughters, Jordanne and Isabel Nichols; brother Bob Miller of Jackson, California; sister Winnie Fitzgerald of Corning and Marie Jeter of Bedford, Iowa; as well as many other friends and relatives. He was a wise and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to those who most needed friends.
MARGARET LOUISE PENCE
Margaret Louise Pence, gifted musician and child of God, was indeed a gift to mankind. Margaret was the eleventh child of James M. and Mary E. Hostetter Hudson. She was born November 14, 1924 in Ringgold county, Iowa. For forty-nine years, Margaret was an active resident of the Mount Ayr community and in the later years, retired in the Des Moines, Iowa area. Margaret attended Mount Ayr school and graduated with the class of 1942.
Margaret shared her life with her two sons, Robert Louis and Richard James Pence. She was a devoted mother to her two boys and daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Sharing her deep faith, her keen sense of humor and her gift of music will create lasting memories.
In their senior years, Margaret lived with and provided much care for her father and mother. The Hudson family shared musical talents and fond memories often. For many years they held the family attendance award at the Mount Ayr Alumni Banquet where Margaret always led the school song.
No one has shared more music with others in Ringgold county than Margaret Pence. She was Methodist Church organist, musician for the Order of Eastern Star for many years and accompanist for the Mount Ayr Choral Club and the Ringgold Singers and accompanied solos, small groups and choirs for most of her life.
Margaret was a member of the Mount Ayr United Methodist Church and later the Trinity United Methodist Church in Des Moines. She was also a member of the Mount Ayr American Legion Auxiliary, B.P.W. and the Royal Neighbors.
Her professional life included mastered secretarial skills for the Selective Service in Ringgold county, Dalbey Lumber Company and Emmet Warin and Bill Warin Law Firms, Acme Piano and A.A.R.P. in Des Moines. She also played professionally for many dances in southern and central Iowa.
Margaret is survived by her two sons, Robert and wife Joan of Sumner, Iowa and Richard of Des Moines; two brothers Robert and wife Ruth and Donald Hudson of Waterloo; two sisters Clarice Bracewell of Glen Ellen, Illinois and Ermal Phillips of Corning, Iowa; her grandchildren are Arlene and Todd Saddler and children, Darien, Ashton, Tiffany and Chelsea; Elizabeth and Dan Greenle and children Samantha, Shawn and Tyler; Rob and Amy Pence and children Carissa and Robert, Jr.; Amity Pence; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Services were held at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr Sunday, June 18, 2000. Edward Shields officiated and Jane Thomas and Judy Cunning provided the music. Casket bearers were Robert Pence, Rob Pence, Edward Shields, Richard Pence, Joe Phillips and Mark Hickman. Margaret was laid to rest at Knowlton Cemetery in Diagonal, Iowa.
ANNA BATA SLAVIK
Anna Bata Slavik was born October 10, 1902 in Czechoslovakia. She was the oldest child of John and Anna Bata. Anna came to America at the age of three. The family lived in Cainsville, Missouri and later moved to Oregon and finally to the Diagonal Bohemian community.
On November 15, 1924, Anna was united in marriage to John Slavik in Diagonal. Together they farmed and raised seven children. As the children were growing up, Anna helped in the fields by riding the binder when oats and wheat were ready to cut. She always had a big garden and did lots of canning. She enjoyed her flowers and was generous with them. Anna was also an excellent seamstress and made all the clothing for her family from patterns she created after seeing styles in catalogs. Anna's greatest joy was her family.
After John died in September of 1965, Anna spent several winters with her sister, Agnes, in Sacramento, California. On June 3, 1994, Anna came to live at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr where she died on June 12, 2000 at the age of 97.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John: ten sibling, John, Joe, Mary, Bessie, Stan, Jim, Albert, Frank, Paul and Jerry; three grandchildren; and son-in-law Elvis Hunt.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Rose Hunt of Redding, Iowa, Mildred Briggs and husband Jack of Tucson, Arizona, Jean Schlapia of Ames, Iowa, Lonnie Slavik and wife Marilyn of Memphis, Tennessee, Frank Slavik and wife Marilyn of Rogers, Arkansas, Stan Slavik and wife Judy of Omaha, Nebraska and Jim Slavik and wife Colleen of Princeton, Missouri: 30 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sister Agnes Besson of Sacramento, California; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.
Services were held at the United Church of Diagonal Thursday, June 15, 2000. Officiating was Rev. Pam Farren and Judy Newton was the organist. Casket bearers were Robert Hunt, Larry Hunt, Daryl Schlapia, Richard Hunt, George Hunt and David Schlapia. Anna was laid to rest at Bohemian Cemetery in Diagonal, Iowa.
CRYSTAL EWING
Crystal Ewing, 93, of Bonaparte, died at 5:07 a.m. Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Good Samaritan Home in Keosauqua.
Born January 27, 1907, in Waterson, she was the daughter of Frank and Bertha Hubbard Hughes. On June 12, 1929, she married James O. Ewing in Grundy Center. He died Sept. 22, 1992.
Mrs. Ewing was a teacher. She was a resident of Bonaparte for 70 years.
She was a member of PEO, TTT Society of Bonaparte, Bonaparte Historical Society and OES of Bonaparte.
She is survived by one cousin and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 21 at Bonaparte United Church with Reverend Ellis Andrews officiating.
A memorial has been established for the Bonaparte First Responders and contributions may be left at Hofbauer Funeral Home, Farmington.
HENRY JENSEN
Henry Jensen, son of Jens Christian and Sophia Magdalene (Larsen) Jensen, was born May 24, 1907 in Sonder- trendres, Denmark and died June 20, 2000 at Holland Lake Nursing Center in Weatherford, Texas at the age of 93 years.
Henry came to America in 1927 and resided with his brother Axel, who had come to America in 1920.
On July 23, 1939, Henry married Levenia Marie Stabe. They settled in Kellerton and raised a daughter, Marie Magdelene and two sons Harold Dean and Larry Ray. In 1989, they sold the farm and moved to Mount Ayr. After Levenia died and he became unable to live alone, he moved to Weatherford, Texas to live with his granddaughter, Debbie Gibson and her family. He remained with them until February of this year when he moved to the Holland Lake Nursing Center.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Lavenia; daughter Marie; brothers Alfred, Emil, Rinehardt, Axel, Chris and an infant brother, Magnus; sisters Olga, Dagmar and Teresa.
Survivors include two sons Harold Jensen of Des Moines, Iowa and Larry Jensen; son-in-law Robert Bagley of Martinez, California; four grandchildren; seven great -grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr Saturday, June 24, 2000. Pastor Rick Hawkins officiated and Nancy Sackett, Mary Trullinger and Margaret Bickers provided the music.
Casket bearers were Gary Gibson, Bob Jensen, Dennis Deemer, Robert Bagley, Jim Jensen and Terry Munyon. Honorary pall bearers were Garrett Gibson, Harold Akers, Bill Jensen, Jack Hughes, Jeremiah Gibson, Charles Gorman, Chester Munyon, Sam Merrill and Kenneth Mickael. Henry was laid to rest at Maple Row Cemetery in Kellerton, Iowa.
CINDI C. SELIM
Cindi C. Selim, 49, of Shannon City, Iowa died Saturday, June 24, 2000 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
Born October 23, 1950 in Winterset, Iowa, she was the daughter of William White and Lillian Normandin. Cindi graduated from Orient -Macksburg in 1969. On June 2, 1968, she married Harold A. Selim in Macksburg.
After marrying, they lived briefly in the Creston area, then for two years in Ames, then for five years south of Orient, before settling in 1975 on their farm south of Arispe.
After her formal education, she sold Bee-Line Fashions. For 30 years she worked as a farm wife with her husband, managing and helping to handle all aspects of the farm operation. Additionally, she has served as the Postmaster of the Thayer Post Office since 1994. For years, she professionally sang in the Cross Country Band and individually for many funerals, weddings and special events.
Cindi belonged to the Arispe United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, having served as the Past Worthy Matron, the Farm Bureau, the Iowa Pork Producers, working on their board of the State Porkettes. She also belonged to The Card Club and the Women Taking Stock investment group.
Preceding her in death were her father, William White, a daughter-in-law, June Selim and her father-in-law, Russell Selim.
Survivors include her spouse Harold Selim of Shannon City; her mother and stepfather, Lillian and Everett Sweet of Macksburg, son Shane (wife Tahnee) Selim of Afton and daughter Jodie (husband Rick) Pettit of Ames; two brothers Larry (wife Jennifer) White of Macksburg and Dave (wife Joyce) White of Newton; a brother-in-law Richard (wife Grace) Selim of Creston; sister Lois (husband Jim) Still of Granger; and three grandchildren.
Services were held at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston Tuesday, June 27, 2000. Rev. Pam Farren of Diagonal officiated. Cindi was laid to rest at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton, Iowa. A memorial has been established to the Arispe United Methodist Church.
ROBERT P. SCOTT
Robert P. Scott, 89, of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Mr. Scott was born June 18, 1910, to Samuel LeRoy and Mary Edna (Wooters) Scott in the Dry Valley Community in Custer County.
He attended Dry Valley country school and helped his dad do carpentry work when he was young.
He married Edith Pearl James at Burwell on February 5, 1937. They farmed in various places, including the Cummings Park area northwest of Sargent.
They later moved to Kellerton and moved to Mount Ayr when they retired. They returned to Broken Bow approximately 12 years ago.
Survivors include his wife Edith Scott, Broken Bow, two sisters, Avis Guggenmos and her husband Michael, Ogallala, and Guyneth Orvis and her husband Lysle, Broken Bow; one brother, Sam Scott, Broken Bow; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Scott and Eben Scott; and two sisters, Erma Stone and Elaine Allison.
Funeral services were June 17, 2000, in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with Reverend Stanley Morrison officiating. Marge Kimball was the organist and music was provided by Chelsey Kimball, Pam Jelinek, Dan Jelinek and Chuck Kleeb.
Pallbearers were Dan Jelinek, Ernest Kleeb, Mark Minne, Chuck Kleeb, Dwain Bryner and Kory Bryner.
Burial was in the Dry Valley Cemetery in Custer County with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been set up to the family.
RUTH VICKER REYNOLDS
Ruth Vicker Reynolds died July 2, 2000 at Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield, Iowa. Ruth was born March 1, 1911 to Edd and Georgia (Siverly) Benson near Diagonal, Iowa.
She graduated from the Diagonal High School in 1929 and from Simpson College with a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1933.
After Ruth spent a number of years as a school teacher in Nevinville and Adair she was united in marriage to George Vicker on June 7, 1939. They resided on a farm outside of Diagonal until George's death in 1974.
On June 18, 1976 Ruth married Pearl Reynolds and they resided in Lenox until Pearl's death in 1983. Ruth then returned to Diagonal where she was a member of the United Church of Diagonal and was active quilting with other ladies from the church.
While Ruth kept busy being a homemaker, mother and grandmother most of her life, she spent a number of years as a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and a member of the Eastern Star. She also had a great love for quilting, sewing and gardening.
Ruth was preceding death by her parents, an infant brother, husband George, an infant daughter Kathleen and husband Pearl.
Ruth will be missed by her two children, Jack Vicker and wife Diana of Commerce City, CO and Jean Haight and husband Lou of Urbandale, Iowa; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the United Church of Diagonal on Wednesday, July 5, 2000 with Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Musicians were Judy Newton and Rochelle Mason.
Casket bearers were Jack Vicker, Jacque Booth, Gary Booth, Lisa Taylor, Lou Haight, Kelly Smith, Jason Smith and Jim Taylor.
Ruth was laid to rest in the Bethel Cemetery near Diagonal, Iowa.
