MAE M. DAVENPORT
Mae M. Davenport, age 88, of Bondurant, Iowa died Wednesday, February 7, 2001, at Metropolitan Hospital, Des Moines.
Mrs. Davenport was born March 4, 1912, in Kellerton, Iowa, to Mary Ann Tunney and William C. Harris. She farmed and lived most of her life in Bondurant.
Mrs. Davenport was a member of the Kellerton Methodist Church. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband Jonny M. Davenport.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Ethington of Bondurant; son Duane Davenport of Denver, Colorado; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at a later date. Merle Hay Funeral Home, Des Moines, was in charge of the arrangements.
DOROTHY FERNE GILES
Dorothy Ferne Giles was born May 3, 1918 in Union county, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Webb and Laura Wilson Webb.
Dorothy grew up in Sandcreek township in Union county. She attended Melrose country school and Tingley high school, graduating in 1937. After high school she lived at home taking care of her mother, Laura, until her death in 1944.
In 1946 she married Donald Giles in Troy, Kansas. The couple lived on a farm one mile north of her birthplace until 1965 when they moved to Arispe, Iowa. Don passed away in 1971. In 1979 Dorothy moved to Creston, Iowa, and in 1995 she entered the Cresthaven Care Centre.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Creston, the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the Livewire Club and the E.O.W. Card Club.
Dorothy enjoyed crocheting, having made afghan blankets for many years. She enjoyed spending time in her garden where she raised African violets and petunias. She was a wonderful cook, her family fondly remembers her coffee pie. Dorothy had a great sense of humor, she loved to laugh and was always quick to smile. She had a special place in her heart for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Dorothy is survived by her three children: Dale Giles and wife Sue of Kansas City, Missouri, Shirley Callison and husband Rick of Greenfield, Iowa and James Giles and wife Rhonda of Creston; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her husband Donald in 1971; her parents, Clarence and Laura; and two sisters, Anna and Hazel.
RAYMOND V. PINE
Raymond V. Pine, age 69, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Sunday, February 11, 2001, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.
Mr. Pine was born June 30, 1931, to Margaret Saylor and Orville Pine in Diagonal, Iowa. He lived most of his life in Des Moines. He was employed with Ziegler, Inc. as a foreman and worked there for 37 years, retiring in 1994. He served with the Army in the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Beaverdale VFW Post 9127 and Highland Park American Legion Post 0374.
Mr. Pine was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Saylor) Pine.
Survivors include his wife LaVon Pine of Des Moines; father Orville Pine of Diagonal; son Wayne Pine of Fremont, California; sisters, Ruth Mathis of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Evelyn Ricker of Mount Ayr, Iowa, Elizabeth Wiley of Diagonal and Beverly Woods of Omaha, Nebraska; and brothers, Robert Pine of Omaha, Nebraska and Ronald Pine of Kansas City, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at Dunn's Funeral Home, Des Moines. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Diagonal.
Memorials may be made to Highland Park American Legion Post 374, Des Moines, or VFW Post 9127, Des Moines.
HOWARD TODD
Howard E. Todd of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, February 12, 2001, at Higley Mansion in Cedar Rapids following a long illness.
Howard was born September 23, 1908 in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the beloved son of Guy and Maud Dugan Todd. He graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1926. He married Minna Gretchen Friedrichs on August 1, 1934.
His occupation throughout his life was in retail and wholesale hardware. In 1968 he moved to Cedar Rapids to become housewares buyer for Harper-McIntire, a post he held until his retirement in 1975.
Known as a gentleman's gentleman and a mason's mason, Howard exemplified in his life the best qualities of Freemasonry. Howard was a brother to all, respected teacher of the craft, eloquent speaker and received its highest honors. He was a member of Faith Lodge #179 in Mount Ayr, 50 year member and Past Master of Mount Hermon Lodge #263, was a member of the Cedar Rapids Consistory, York Rite and Scottish Rite, the El Kahir Shrine, the 101 Unit and the Past Masters Unit of El Kahir.
A 33rd Degree Mason, Howard was Grand Chaplain, Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1981 and 1982. He served as Chaplain of El Kahir Shrine from 1985 to 1995 and was recipient of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and he served in the U. S. Navy during WW II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gretchen in 1990; a daughter Cynthia Louise Todd; and two sisters.
Surviving are a daughter Suzanne Todd Kendig and her husband Thomas of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Christopher Kendig of Boston, Massachusetts and Catherine Kendig of London, England.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 15, 2001 at Turner Chapel West in Cedar Rapids. The Reverend Lloyd Brockmeyer of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate, and Tom Eggleston, 33rd Degree, Past Grand Master Grand Lodge of Iowa will conduct Masonic Rites. All Master Masons are asked to be present.
Interment will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 16, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, conducted by Faith Lodge #179.
Memorials may be made in Howard's name to the El Kahir Transportation Fund, El Kahir Shrine, 1400 Blairs Ferry Road NE, Cedar Rapids.

DONALD RAY GOINS
On July 9, 1947, Donald Ray Goins was born to Lloyd and Edith Goins. He was the first little brother to Shirley his older sister. His father worked in power line construction in different locations during these years. Two more brothers, Rex and Jim, were born before the family moved to a farm west of Diagonal, Iowa. Two more sisters, Betty and Linda, were born after the family moved to Diagonal.
Donald began his school years at the country school Lincoln #7, continuing his education at Diagonal Community school where he graduated from high school in 1965.
Donald attended Iowa State University for a year and worked a few years with his dad and brother Jim in the dairy business. He was then employed by Federal Crop Insurance.
In June of 1968 Donald was united in marriage to Ruth Tridle at the Diagonal Christian Church. One son, Darin, was born to this union. Donald and Ruth were divorced in 1979.
On February 1, 1981, Donald married June England and they made their home in Casar, North Carolina where they enjoyed gardening, farming and dancing. He continued working some for Federal Crop Insurance.
Donald's health had declined rapidly the past several months. He was taken to the Cleveland Medical Clinic at Shelby, North Carolina on February 3 where he died on the evening of February 9.
Preceding him in death were his father, his brother Rex and his wife June.
Surviving him are his mother Edith; his son Darin and wife Cindy of Murray, Iowa; sister Shirley Jones and husband Ron of Webb City, Missouri; brother Jim and wife Joy of Diagonal; sister Betty Greenlee and husband Keith of Pleasantville, Iowa; sister Linda Van Pelt and husband Bill of Urbandale, Iowa; two half brothers, Lloyd Goins of Axtell, Kansas and Bill Goins of Harton, Kansas; two stepdaughters, Carol Kinder of Hatfield, Missouri and Tammy Samo of Clarinda, Iowa; and four stepsons, Robert England of Casar, North Carolina, Jerry England of Bagley, Iowa, Dennis England of Fort Worth, Texas and Terry England of Washington, Iowa. Also left to mourn are nieces, nephews, cousins, stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Donald made friends easily. He enjoyed people and made many visits on his trips back to Diagonal. He will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
He was a member of the Diagonal Christian Church and past member of the Diagonal Lions and the Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, with Reverend John Brillo officiating.
Musicians were Judy Newton and John Allen. Casket bearers were Tom Fletcher, Claire Newton, Frank Gunsolley, Ron Overholser, Jim Stephens and Ed Allee.
Donald was laid to rest in the Diagonal Cemetery, Diagonal.
CHARLES ELMER "JOKER" MICKAEL
Charles Elmer "Joker" Mickael was born at Mount Ayr, Iowa, on July 28, 1937, the son of Hugh "Dick" and Clara Pottorff Mickael.
He served in the U.S. Navy. On May 28, 1958, he was united in marriage with Carolyn Green and from this union were born two children, Chuck and Carol.
Joker was a mechanic and worked for Andy Johnson Chevrolet and Harvey Bros. Oldsmobile garages. In 1980, he moved to Denver, Colorado and was a diesel mechanic before retiring back to Mount Ayr in 1990. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church and Ringgold Post #172.
Joker loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed when they came around to hear of his adventures, ask question, play games, to fix a toy of some kind or just for a kiss and hug.
Joker passed from this life, at his home, on February 14, 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Clara Mickael; one brother James; his father and mother-in-law, Noah and Cecil Green; one sister-in-law Bonnie Reed; and one brother-in-law Bud Henry.
Left to mourn his passing is his loving and devoted wife and best friend Carolyn; son Chuck of Mount Ayr; daughter Carol Swainston and her husband John of Sheridan, Michigan; four grandchildren, Joshua Swainston of Iowa City, Iowa, Brandi Swainston of Sheridan, Michigan, Krystle and Katelyn Mickael of Mount Ayr; sister Thelma Tipton and her husband Herman of Mount Ayr; brother Arthur of Mount Ayr; three sisters-in-law, Jeannette Mickael of Fairview Heights, Illinois, Gerry Henry of Prescott Valley, Arizona and Aldean Overton of Des Moines, Iowa; brother-in-law Noah Green and his wife DeeAnn of Conway, Arkansas; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 17, 2001, at Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home of Mount Ayr with Reverend Philip Campbell officiating. Musicians were Nancy Sackett, Mary Trullinger and Margaret Bickers. Casket bearers were Paul Glendenning, Todd Glendenning, Jack Campbell, Don Stark, Dick Hull and Lyle Hogue.
Military graveside rites were given by Ringgold Post #172 American Legion.
Joker was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
HELEN MARGIE NELSON
Helen Margie Johnston Nelson was born April 29, 1916, to Mary Estes Baker and Veril Golden Johnston in Knowlton, Iowa. She died February 8, 2001. She had two brothers, Vern and Myron and a sister Merna.
Her childhood was spent in Ringgold County surrounded by cousins. During high school, Helen boarded in Mount Ayr to attend school during the week. Helen graduated from high school in Diagonal, Iowa. Helen wanted to be a hair dresser but her dad convinced her to go to school to become a teacher. She taught in county schools in Ringgold and Taylor counties before she married.
Helen married Horace B. Nelson on May 28, 1942. They lived on the farm two miles south of Clearfield, Iowa until their retirement when they moved into town. During WWII she followed Horace and lived for short periods of time in Pennsylvania, Texas, and California. They had five children, Eugene, Ronald (died in infancy), Ruth, Leroy and Randall.
Helen was a hard worker. She always raised a big garden and canned the produce. Helen always raised chickens to eat and to have eggs. She instilled a sense of value and work ethic to her children. Everyone was welcomed into Helen's home. At several times she opened her home to those who were sick or needed help. Grandmother Nelson and Grandfather Johnston and Ivan Nelson spent many months in her home. She willingly moved clothes around to make room for the guests.
Helen was active in the Christian Church. She taught Sunday school for several years. She decorated the bulletin boards for the church. She directed the Christmas programs for several years.
Helen participated in Ladies Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader for several years.
Helen always enjoyed doing crafts. She was very artistic. She liked to draw. She made several quilts for family members as gifts.
Helen was especially proud of her grandchildren. They are Nick, Kristin and Lauren Nelson of Des Moines; Megan and Michelle Stowe of Gillette, Wyoming; Clifford and Alicia Nelson of Moravia, Iowa; Tiffany, Christopher and Ashley Nelson of Knoxville, Iowa.
She is survived by her children, Eugene and children, Ruth, Bob and children, Leroy and Mary Ann and children, Randall, Sherri and children; sister-Merna Johnston; sisters-in-law Rhoda Johnston and Cuma Johnston; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald Dee, Horace and brothers, and brothers-in-law, Vern, Myron, Lyle and Ivan.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at the Christian Church, Clearfield, with Reverend Eydie Stephens officiating. Musicians were Jean Huffman and Kathy Nelson. Casket bearers were Jim Mason, Kenny Nelson, Clinton Brown, Richard Mackey, Jerry Huffine and Alan Brown.
Helen was laid to rest in the Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield.
