HARRIS, LOUIE CAMPBELL was born January 18, 1926 at Redding, Iowa the son of Cyrus Carl & Angie Malinda (Campbell) Harris. He married Mary A. Murphy February 18, 1950 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Mary died September 23, 1999. Louie was employed as an iron worker with John G. Miller Construction. He died Friday, October 10, 2003 at his home at the age of 77 years.
Survivors include two brothers, Beryl “Buzz” (Evelyn) Harris of Cedar Falls, Troy (Roberta) Harris of Cape Coral, Florida; three sisters, Wanda (Ceja) Miller of San Diego, California, Kathy (Harold) Kothenbeutel of Bedford, Iowa, and Ila Elaine Nyberd of Salem, Oregon. Louie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, Junior Carl Harris, and four sisters, Lora Esther Howard, Margarette A. Jacobsen, Josephine Louise Harris, and Patricia Rose Harris.
Memorial services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2003 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
HATTEL, JEAN M. , 81, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Manchester, died Saturday, July 31, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. She was born April 7, 1923 in Manchester, the daughter of Luther O. and Edith S. (Anderson) Wiltse. Jean married Thomas E. Hattel, Jr. on December 13, 1941 at Oakland, California. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1981. Jean was a 1941 graduate of Manchester High School and attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska. Her wartime employment was at the naval station in Oakland, California. Jean was a homemaker and worked for eight years at the family grocery business in Belmond, Iowa. She was a dental assistant in Waverly, Iowa and most recently worked for seventeen years at Creative Systems Inc. (formerly Control-O-Fax) in Waterloo, Iowa, retiring in 1985.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Marcia K. Fitzgerald of Grinnell, Iowa and her son, Alan L. (Susan Carson) Hattel of Dubuque, Iowa; three grandchildren, Teresa Marie “Teri” (David) Hoffstetter of Grinnell, Shannon A. (Aaron) Fitzgerald-Schultz of Grinnell and Carson M. (Lisa) Hattel of Clive, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Michael David “Mick” Hoffstetter, Tanner James Hoffstetter, Alec John Yung Schultz and Alexi Kayleen Soo Schultz; her brother, Gerald Wiltse of Manchester and eleven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents, a son-in-law, Michael J. Fitzgerald and two sisters-in-law, Norma Willard and Joyce Wiltse.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jean M. Hattel Memorial Fund.
HAWKENSON, JACOB LEE "JAKE" 20, of Cedar Falls died Sunday, July 18, 2004 in Cedar Falls. He was born October 2, 1983 the son of Paulette Hagarty Hawkenson & Kevin Hawkenson. Jake graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 2002 and was currently a junior at the University of Northern Iowa. He was employed by Carlos O'Kelly’s Mexican Café. He was an Eagle Scout and was on the Dean’s List at U.N.I.
Survivors include his mother, Paulette Hagarty Hawkenson of Cedar Falls, his father, Kevin Hawkenson of Chaska, Minnesota; one brother, Chad Jason Hawkenson of Norwood, Minnesota; two sisters, Blair Renee Hawkenson and Lauren Beth Hawkenson, both of Cedar Falls, his niece, Abigail Rose Hawkenson and many Aunts and Uncles. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Maurice J. & Mary L. Hagarty, and his paternal grandmother, Betty Lou Hawkenson.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established.
HEATH, KENNETH LEE was born September 25, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Merle A. and Helene A. (Neuhalfen) Heath. He married Janice Sue Darland on September 25, 1965 in Waterloo; they later divorced. Ken married Carol Kielman on January 15, 1984 in Clarksville, Iowa. He was a welder at Sampson Supply Manufacturing in Waterloo for over 20 years, and had been working at Kay Manufacturing in Janesville, Iowa at the time of his illness. Ken died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at his home in Janesville, at 51 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Carol, of Janesville; his children, William Lee Heath of Clarksville, Shelley Ann Card of Cedar Falls and Kurt Anthony Heath of Janesville; two step-children, Scott H. Kielman of Allison, Iowa and Christina M. Izer of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Cody Heath, Colton Card and Caleb Heath; three step-grandchildren, Zachary Freese, and Kaitlain and Karlene Izer; four sisters, Marlene Jeys of Waterloo, Bernadine Nielsen and Connie Taylor, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Phyllis Lane of Janesville; and five brothers, Donald of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Richard, Joseph, Leo and James, all of Cedar Falls.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Leo Heath, Jr.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to Bremer/Butler County Hospice, Cedar Valley Hospice or the family.
HEATH, SANDRA M. 60, of Cedar Falls died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa following a lengthy illness. She was born September 25, 1943 at Wall Lake, Iowa the daughter of Ed & Bertha (Schoenboom) Werkmeister. She married Leo Heath June 2, 1962 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Sandra was employed as a maid at the Black Hawk Hotel for 22 years.
Survivors include her husband, Leo, of Cedar Falls; one son, Kevin Heath of Waterloo; two daughters, Kimberly (Allyn) Kirkpatrick and Dawn Heath of Cedar Falls, one grandson; four brothers, Duane (Marge) Werkmeister of Lake View, Iowa, Dale Werkmeister of Denver, Colorado, Robert (Mary) Werkmeister and Larry (Nadine) Werkmeister all of Waterloo; and one sister, Mary Henry of Cedar Falls. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Leo Heath, Jr., and three brothers, Ken, Don, and Earl.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Hillside Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established.
HELGESON, DIANA KAY was born April 30, 1946 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas A. and Mary E. (Schaffenburg) Stokes. She married Jim Helgeson on December 31, 1988 in Cedar Falls. Diana was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and worked as a waitress for many years at several restaurants in the area. She was also a nurse’s aide for many years at several local nursing homes and was an in-home healthcare provider. Diana died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, at 54 years of age.
She is survived by her husband Jim, of Cedar Falls; her two sons, David Christian Beck, Jr. and Nels Thomas Beck, both of Waterloo; a step-daughter, Maureen Mehmen of Plainfield, Iowa; three step-sons, Michael Helgeson of Cedar Falls, Kevin Helgeson of Royal Palm Beach, Florida and Patrick Helgeson of Lakeville, Minnesota; her brother, James B. Stokes of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Joann L. Benda of Dysart, Iowa and Carol J. Fox of Des Moines, Iowa, and seven step-grandchildren.
Diana was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Thomas Nels Beck and an infant sister, Jean M. Stokes.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
HEMPEN, ALBERT was born July 16, 1907 in Dike, Iowa, the son of Joe F. and Rena (Satthoff) Hempen. He married Charlotte Giesking February 24, 1932 at Wellsburg, Iowa. She preceded him in death February 23, 2001. Albert farmed near Dike and New Hartford for many years. He died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center at the age of 96 years.
Albert is survived by his daughter, Eunice H. Hempen of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; two brothers Herman Hempen and Raymond Hempen; and two sisters, Jennie Emkes and Henrietta Kruger.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Wellsburg.
HEMPEN, CHARLOTTE was born August 11, 1912 in Wellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Hermine (Koch) Giesking. She married Albert Hempen on February 24, 1932 in Wellsburg, Iowa. Charlotte died Friday, February 23, 2001 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, at 88 years of age.
She is survived by her husband Albert, of Cedar Falls; her daughter, Eunice Hempen of Cedar Falls; two brothers, William Giesking of Grundy Center, Iowa and Alvin Giesking of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl Giesking.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Nazareth Lutheran Church Chapel in Cedar Falls. Interment was at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Wellsburg, Iowa. A memorial fund will be established.
HENRIKSEN, ALAN "RICK" , 44, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at his home in Waterloo. He was born June 19, 1959 at Albert Lea, Minnesota, the son of Gerald and Darlene (Bridley) Henriksen. Rick married Julie Minikus and they were later divorced.
He is survived by a son, Josh (Leasha) Henriksen of New Hartford, Iowa; two daughters, Melissa and Danielle Henriksen, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his mother and step-father, Darlene and Arlow Doughty of Waterloo; a brother, Scott (Cheryl) Henriksen of Gordonsville, Minnesota; and a sister, Vickey (Mike) Smith of Waterloo.
Rick was preceded in death by his father.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
HENRY, SARAH FLORENCE was born February 6, 1914 at Janesville, Iowa, the daughter of Willard E. and Alice I. (Spears) McGilligan. She married Stuart H. Henry on June 15, 1932 at Janesville, Iowa. Before her retirement she was a medical assistant for 21 years for Dr. David Hansen. Florence died Monday, December 14, 1998 at the Western Home Martin Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the age of 84 years.
She is survived by her husband Stuart, of Cedar Falls and several nieces and nephews.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Herbert McGilligan and three sisters, Nedra Jennings, Marjorie Boomer and Helen Lee.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m.Thursday, December 17, 1998 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa.
HENRY, STUART was born July 6, 1909 in Mt. Vernon Township, Iowa, the son of Albert J. and Laura (Albright) Henry. He married Sarah Florence McGilligan on June 15, 1932 at Janesville, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 14, 1998. Stuart was a farmer in Mt. Vernon Township until moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1968. He was then employed by Cedar Falls Utilities until his retirement. Stuart died Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls at 89 years of age.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Stuart was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two brothers, Otis and George Henry.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 1999 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.
HERZOG, CHRISTINE M. was born August 28, 1919 in Ponder Switch, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Henry and Maud May (Manning) Whittaker. She married Herbert C. Herzog on March 22, 1940 in Kennett, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 7, 1999. Christine was a cosmetologist for five years at Casey’s Beauty Salon and later owned and operated Chris’s Beauty Salon for 44 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Cedar Falls Business Woman’s Club and several professional organizations, including the National Association of Cosmetology. Christine was a former chairperson of the Alter Guild and was a member of several bible studies and committees at Nazareth Lutheran Church. She also taught Sunday School at both First Presbyterian Church and Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Christine died Friday, December 20, 2002, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, at 83 years of age.
She is survived by her children, Betty Sue Danielson and Marilyn R. (Larry) Cirksena, both of Cedar Falls, Carolyn K. Blott of Renton, Washington and Dave Martin (Delores) Herzog of Milan, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Jeff Heckroth, Kim Zimmerman, David C. Herzog, Troy Danielson, Monique Woodward and Christy and Ellie Leibundguth; two step-grandsons, Mark and Brent Cirksena; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty S. Wolthoff of Grundy Center, Iowa and Bernice S. Freeman of Paragould, Arkansas.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband and parents, a grandson, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2002, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home or the Parkinson's Foundation.
HESS, SHARON B., 74, of Cedar Falls, Iowa and formerly of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. She was born February 8, 1930 in Clark, South Dakota, the daughter of Willard and Viva (Carter) Benson. Sharon married Marvin W. Hess on June 25, 1955 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. They were later divorced. Sharon worked in the business office at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls and later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she worked in the Cardiology Department at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
She is survived by two sons, Mark Hess of Phoenix, Arizona and Todd (Gema) Hess of Tucson, Arizona; two daughters, Terri (David) Vorland of Cedar Falls and Mary (Chris) Hess-Thomas of Marion, Illinois; six grandchildren, Ryan Sullivan, Ryan Hess, Jaime and Troy Hess, and Katie and Trey Hess-Thomas; five step-grandchildren, Emily and Erin Vorland, Christopher, Zack and Cody Thomas; a great-grandson, Landon Sullivan and two sisters, Carmen (Ken) Finch of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Carol Lough of Cedar Falls.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister, Charlene Hess and a brother, Donald Hess.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2004, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Dialysis Center or The American Diabetes Association.
HEWITT, MICHAEL CHARLES "HEWEY" was born on October 15, 1947, at Waterloo, Iowa the son of Harold and Ruth (Fagerlind) Hewitt. He married Sharon Headrick on March 19, 1966, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Hewey graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1965was employed by John Deere for 37 years, most recently as Union Shop Chairman for UAW Local 838. Hewey died on Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at his home in Waterloo at 51 years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Waterloo; three sons, Michael D. and his fiancée Tasha, Christopher and his wife Boni, and Sean and his wife Traci all of Waterloo; one daughter, Shereen Rene Hewitt of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Jacob Michael, Madison Kaye and Mitchael Charles, his mother, Ruth Klaus of Las Vegas, Nevada and one brother, Dennis Hewitt of Rochester, Minnesota.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
