HILGER, FRED H. was born June 6, 1903 in David City, Nebraska, the son of Joseph & Myrtle (Murphy) Hilger. He married Lucille Close on September 10, 1924 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. They celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary in the year 2000. Lucille preceded him in death on September 28, 2000. Fred worked at John Deere & Company for many years. He farmed in Bremer County and worked at the Waverly Sale Barn, retiring in 1974. Fred died Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly at the age of 99 years.
Survivors include one son, Mick (Linda) Hilger of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Phyllis Napiecek of Maryville, Missouri, Sally (Stan) Chapin of Gravois Mills, Missouri and a granddaughter raised as a daughter, Kathy (Ron) Brown of Versailles, Missouri; 12 other grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Anthony “Bud” (Zatha) Hilger of Columbus, Nebraska.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife and parents; one daughter, Donna Noel McCarty; two sons-in-law, Virgil Napiecek and Ernest Noel; two granddaughters, four brothers, two sisters, and a grandson-in-law.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 1, 2002 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. A memorial fund will be established.
HILGER, LUCILLE R. was born May 12, 1906, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Albert J. and Abbie (Hasbrouck) Close. She married Fred H. Hilger on September 10, 1924, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. Lucille died Thursday, September 28, 2000, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, at 94 years of age.
She is survived by her husband Fred, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two daughters, Phyllis Y. Napiecek of Maryville, Missouri and Sally M. Chapin and her husband Stanley of Waterloo; a son, Mick Hilger and his wife Linda of Cedar Falls; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Arlyne Smith Forman of Cedar Falls, Beverly Bengston and her husband George of Waterloo, and Mary Joan Schmidt and her husband Emil of Cedar Falls.
Lucille was preceded in death by a daughter, Madonna R. McCarty; her parents, two sisters, Alberta Redding and Doris Smith, and five brothers, Edwin, Lincoln, Orville, Robert and Gilbert Close.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2000, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Memorials be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
HILL, RUSSELL F. was born March 7, 1914 in Shell Rock, Iowa, the son of Frank and Myrtle (Hall) Hill. He married Lucille J. Barr on June 30, 1935 at the Little Brown Church near Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death on August 7, 1984. Russell married Betty Jean Wisby on October 12, 2002, in Cedar Falls. Russell was employed for 23 years at Iowa Securities Company where he served as Vice President and was also the manager of the Waterloo office. Since 1958, he has owned Hill Realty, Building and Appraisal Company, earning his certification as an M.A.I. Appraiser, and was a developer of several sub divisions in the area. Russell was a member of the Elks Club, the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Shriner. He was past president in 1970 of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Real Estate Board and was past president of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Home Builders Association. He also was the National and Life Director of the National Association of Home Builders. Russell died Monday, August 4, 2003, at his home in Cedar Falls, at 89 years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Wisby-Hill, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Larry L., John C. and Steven W. Hill, all of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Helen L. Hill Moser, of Schaumburg, Illinois; four step-children, Gary Wisby of Evanston, Illinois, James Wisby of Des Moines, Iowa, Barbara Harms of Waterloo, Iowa and Sharon Joseph of Phoenix, Arizona; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents and first wife; a sister, Helen Hill and his step-mother, Henrietta Hill.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
HILL, WALLACE W. "WALLY" was born August 9, 1917 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Carl D. and Vita M. (Billings) Hill. He married Dorothy M. Wyatt on September 9, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. She preceded him in death on January 23, 1987. Wally worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa for many years. He also worked at the Firestone Store in downtown Cedar Falls and for John Deere & Company in Waterloo for 26 years, retiring from Dept. 65 in December of 1979. Wally died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at his home in Waterloo, at 85 years of age.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy L. (Jack) Thompson of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Darcy (Brian) Smith and Wade Thompson, all of Waterloo, and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Caitlin and Dalton, all of Waterloo.
Wally was preceded in death by his wife and parents, and two sisters, Phyllis Harders and Betty Clark.
Graveside committal services were 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family.
HOEPPNER, RUTH B. was born November 8, 1911 in Popejoy, Iowa, the daughter of Roy E. and Alta Ann (Gates) Altenhein. She married Harold W. Hoeppner in Traer, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 23, 1983. Ruth stayed at home to raise her five children; was a member of the Eastern Star, Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls, and a member of the woman’s church circle. She died Wednesday, October 6, 1999, at her home in Cedar Falls, at 87 years of age.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jo Nickel and her husband Dieter of Cedar Falls; her three sons, Donald and his wife Sherryl of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Curtis and his wife Gayle of Rockford, Illinois, and Eldon and his wife Jeanne of Reinbeck, Iowa; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and her two brothers, Roger Altenhein and his wife Helen of Traer, Iowa, and Robert Altenhein and his wife Jean of Cedar Falls.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; a son, Vernon; and two brothers, John and Paul Altenhein.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 1999, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls, with intermenty at Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck, Iowa. HOFFMAN, ANN (RAAIJMAKERS) was born March 22, 1912 in Woensdrect, The Netherlands, the daughter of Cornelius and Petronella “Nellie” (Raaijmakers) Daamen. She married Forrest S. Hoffman on May 2, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1972. Ann worked at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo for four years. She and her husband owned and operated H & H Superette Grocery Store on College Hill in Cedar Falls, Iowa for 23 years, retiring in 1964. Ann was also past president of the St. Patrick Catholic Church Womens League and participated in a local bowling league. She died Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, at 91 years of age.
Survivors include her daughter, Julie Oliver, of Burnet, Texas; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Cora Krall of Toluca Lake, California. Ann was preceded in death by her husband and parents, two great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Krall Oberlander.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
HOFFMEISTER, HERBERT W. was born November 9, 1901 at Morgenstern, Province of Pommern, East Germany the son of Friederich & Margarete Hoffmeister. He married Martha I. Bauer September 5, 1935 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hudson. She preceded him in death on May 3, 1991. Herbert worked as a mechanic repairing locomotives in a round house in Berlin before coming to America in 1925. He worked as a farm hand and in 1940 they started farming for themselves near Morrison. In 1953 they purchased a farm north of Dike where they farmed until their retirement in 1966. Herbert died Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls at the age of 101 years.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded by his parents; one daughter, Darlene, who died in infancy; two sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, both rural Hudson. Memorials may be directed to the church.
HOLDER, VERNA HAHN, was born September 21, 1908 at Fairmont, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Minnie (Johnson) Jennings. She married Herman Hahn in 1927 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He preceded her in death in 1964. Verna married William Holder in 1968 at Cedar Falls, Iowa. William preceded her in death in 1998. Verna was the owner of Bi-Low Grocery Store in North Cedar for 25 years. She died Saturday, June 3, 2000 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, at 91 years of age.
Verna is survived by her two step-sons, Kenneth Hahn of Concord, Alabama and John Hahn of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; twelve grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands and her parents; four step-sons, Robert, Weldon, Milton and Charles Hahn; a brother and two sisters.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Faith Wesleyan Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the church.
HOLTZ, JOSEPH PETER was born February 24, 1919 in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, the son of Peter and Mary (Miscysyn) Dzuira. He married Evelyn Naivar on June 1, 1946 in Temple, Texas. Joe served with the U.S. Army during W.W. II and was employed as a machine operator for Teledyne Continental Motor Company in Muskegon for many years. He was a former member of the V.F.W. and St. Jean’s Catholic Church in Muskegon. Joe died Friday, December 22, 2000, at his home in Cedar Falls, at 81 years of age.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn, of Cedar Falls; his daughter, Linda Plakke and her husband Bruce, of Cedar Falls; five granddaughters, Emy Monroe and her husband Tony, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Elise Plakke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jodi Courts and her husband Christopher, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Bethany and Lia Plakke, both of Cedar Falls, and three sisters, Flora Chandonnet and Stella Arnoldi and her husband John, all of Muskegon, and Anne Yorks of Nokomis, Florida.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Alexander and two brothers, Michael and Bill Holtz.
Memorial services were 10:00 Wednesday, December 27, 2000, at St. Stephen's Catholic Student Center in Cedar Falls. Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple, Texas at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family.
HOWELL, ROY EMERY was born January 27, 1928 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Emery Earl and Florence Ellen (Sparks) Howell. He married Darlene Joy King on July 30, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa. She preceded Roy in death on December 26, 1988. Roy served with the U.S. Navy and worked at John Deere & Company in Waterloo for 36 years, retiring from Dept. 7B. He was a member of the Cedar Valley Woodworkers Association and enjoyed cooking. Roy died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, at 75 years of age.
He is survived by his three sons, Roy Earl (Chun Jae) Howell of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Kevin Scott Howell of Cedar Falls and Bradley M. (Jill) Howell of Basehor, Kansas; his daughter, Marie Lynn (Martin) Drilling of Waterloo; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and four sisters, Ellen Hansen of Minnesota, Freda Mae (Earl) Hansen of Cedar Falls, Ardith Shull of Des Moines, Iowa and Carol (Don) Farrell of Cedar Falls.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife and parents, a grandchild and a sister, Iva Howell.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cedar Falls at a later date. A memorial fund will be established.
HUDSON, GLORIA ALICE was born November 25, 1921 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Achilles and Viola (Harris) Calabrese. She married Edward D. Hudson on May 12, 1945 at Milwaukee. Wisconsin. He preceded her in death in 1973. Gloria died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa at the age of 79 years.
Gloria is survived by one daughter. Susan Hudson of Cedar Falls, Iowa and one son Edward David Hudson of Sacramento, California; three grandchildren, Edward David Hudson, William Curtis Hudson and Erin Frederick; one sister, Doris Lemberger of Greenfield, Wisconsin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Lucille Bushberger and Shirley Sadowski.

HUGHES, CLEONE O. was born May 7, 1915 at Mallard, Iowa, the daughter of M. C. and Mabel M. (Broadwell) Worster. She was a 1933 graduate of Algona High School and was a welder at Hinson Manufacturing in Waterloo, Iowa for 19 years, retiring in 1981. Cleone married Donald J. Hughes on September 8, 1938 at Fairmont, Minnesota. He preceded her in death on February 13, 1979. Cleone died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, at 83 years of age.
She is survived by her two sons, Wayne J. Hughes and his friend Barbara Swarts, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Mark A. Hughes of and his friend Teresa Vilmain, of Verona, Wisconsin; her seven daughters, Marcia Dorais of Commerce Township, Michigan; Sandra Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada; Donna Dettbarn-Chambers and her husband James, of Chicago, Illinois; Karen M. Eastman and her husband Richard J., of Cedar Falls; Connie Rasmussen and her husband Dennis, of Waverly, Iowa; Linda Hughes of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Tamara Miller of Liberal, Kansas; twenty-four grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Cleone was preceded in death by her husband and parents; three brothers, Gordon, Clifford and Fritz "M. C." Worster and a sister, Elaine Teeter.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999 at the funeral home, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the Univ. of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Oncology Dept. in Iowa City, Iowa.
HUMPHREY, SUZANNE (BUENNEKE) was born October 8, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of Dale and Elizabeth (Spahn) Buenneke. She married J. W. Humphrey in 1985 and he died in 1996. Suzanne was a sales representative for the Hometowner from 1980 to 1990 and was then a realtor/broker from 1990 until the present time with Four Seasons Realty and then Hart Realty. She died Monday, August 26, 2002 at her home at the age of 51 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Anna McDermott of Raleigh, North Carolina; one brother, Joseph Buenneke of Longview, Texas; and two sisters, Heidi Buenneke, and Cathy Ogden of Red Oak, Iowa. Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Memorial services were 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
