PETERSON, KATHRYN I., was born July 11, 1916, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Willard and Kathrine (Noonan) Gowans. She married Richard Peterson October 12, 1950 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1979. Kathryn was a graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, Iowa. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and was the former Director of Nursing at the Cedar Falls Western Home. Kathryn died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Stone Hill Care Center in Dubuque, at 83 years of age.
She is survived by her two sons, Paul R. Peterson of Mason City, Iowa and Tim W. Peterson of Topeka, Kansas; two grandchildren and three sisters, Mildred, Genevieve and Sr. Marilyn Gowans, all of Dubuque. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Family-directed graveside inurnment services were Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family.
PHILLIPS, JOHN R. , 69, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. He was born July 27, 1934, in Gilbertville, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret (Schomer) Phillips. John married Yvonne Pecenka on June 6, 1953 in Wichita, Kansas. He worked at the Boeing Aircraft plant in Wichita, Kansas and for 13 years at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa. John owned and operated Johnny’s Standard Service Station in Gilbertville for 6 years before moving to Cedar Falls. He was service manager at several local automotive dealerships, including Reed’s Cadillac-Olds in Waterloo. John was a volunteer fireman and former chief for the city of Gilbertville, where he was also involved with the Boy Scouts.
John is survived by his wife, Yvonne, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Greg of Fruitland Park, Florida, Dennis of Cedar Falls and Russell (Lisa) of Fruitland Park, Florida; three daughters, Cindy Cable of Waterloo, Jackie Ritchie of Baltimore, Maryland and Lori (Greg) Yoder of Summerfield, Florida; nine grandchildren, Kenny Cable, Siobhan Phillips, Meghan, Taylor and Adam Ritchie, Uriah Wheat, Randy Yoder, and Jessica and Sarah Phillips; a step-grandson, Eric Strawser; two great-grandchildren, Mariah and Mikey; a brother, Roger (Joes) Phillips of New Hampton, Iowa and four sisters, Theresea Klein, Marge Reuter, Mary Hames and Dorothy Fischels, all of Gilbertville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Patrick Phillips ; six brothers, Andrew, George, Jim, Jerry, Leo and Joe Phillips, and a sister, Magdelene Kurtenbach.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 19, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established at a later date.
PHILLIPS, PATRICK C. was born October 1, 1965 in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of John R. and Yvonne (Pecenka) Phillips. He married Christine Manley on May 24, 1986 in Cedar Falls. Pat was a self-employed carpenter for many years and had been working for Quality Concrete Construction in Waverly, Iowa. He died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at his home in Cedar Falls, at 37 years of age.
Pat is survived by his wife, Christine, and his two daughters, Jessica and Sarah, all of Cedar Falls; his parents, John and Yvonne Phillips, of Cedar Falls; three sisters, Cindy Cable of Waterloo, Iowa, Jackie Ritchie of Baltimore, Maryland and Lori (Greg) Yoder of Summerfield, Florida; and three brothers, Gregory Phillips of Fruitland Park, Florida, Dennis Phillips of Cedar Falls and Russell (Lisa) Phillips of Fruitland Park, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Margaret Phillips and his maternal grandparents, George and Ellen Pecenka.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls. Interment was at Buckingham Cemetery near Traer, Iowa. A memorial fund will be established.
PIERCE, ANNA F. was born on January 17, 1905 in Bangor, Iowa the daughter of Boyd and Ethleen (Davis) Carey. She married Roscoe Jackson Pierce on November 16, 1925 in Ames, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1983. Anna died on Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 93 years of age.
She is survived by one son, Roscoe L. Pierce of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Mary E. Fosse of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Eric H. Pierce of Phoenix, Arizona and Deborah C. Zorno of Pine, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Clow, Jennifer Pierce & Shannon Pierce and two great-great-grandchildren, Ariane & James Clow.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roscoe, two sisters, Maxine Carey & Willian Jones; two half sisters, Lucille Funk & Helen Sneider and a half brother in infancy.
Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 1998 at First Baptist Church in Cedar Falls with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the church.
PINSONNEAULT, JOSEPH R. "PETE" was born May 28, 1937 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, the son of Gerald and Jeannette (LaLiberte) Pinsonneault. He married Nancy Bryan on August 12, 1961 in Phillip, South Dakota. Pete served with the U.S. Air Force for 8 years and was the manager of Porter’s Camera Warehouse Outlet Store for 15 years, retiring in May of 2000. He served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Bowhunting Association for 15 years and was a member of the Advisory Board for the Photography Department at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, Iowa. Pete died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, at 65 years of age.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his two daughters, Cindy Sanders and Liza Kiewiet, both of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren and a sister, Pauline Terrien of South Attleboro, Massachusetts.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.
POE, JOAN B. was born June 9, 1932 in Cedar Falls, Iowa the daughter of Stanley W. and Norma (Blecke) Seroke. She married Ellsworth L. Poe September 15, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. He died September 18, 1971. Joan received her Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI). She was a homemaker from 1951 to 1971 and was then President of Standard Distributing Company, Inc. and Crystal Distribution Services, Inc. Joan died Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at Allen Memorial Hospital, in Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 69 years.
Survivors include four sons, Stanley of Cedar Rapids, David, Thomas, and Michael, all of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Melinda Fitzgerald of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Susan Pelleymounter of Cedar Falls, and 20 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2001 at St. John Lutheran Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. Memorials: may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church, Allen Hospital Foundation or UNI Foundation.
POOCK, VIRGIL H. was born on December 2, 1928 near Dunkerton, Iowa the son of John and Anna (Moeller) Poock. He died on Thursday, November 25, 1998 at Country View Care Center in rural Cedar Falls, Iowa at the age of 69 years.
He is survived by one brother, Arnold Poock of Monticello, Iowa and one sister, Mildred Lechner of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Leona Sinclair and two brothers, Melvin and Lavern.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 30, 1998 at the funeral home with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo.
POTRATZ, RANDALL DOWNING , 48, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at his home. Randy was born November 27, 1955 at Maynard, Iowa the son of Carl H. & Alice B. (Downing) Potratz. Randy graduated from Maynard West Central High School in 1974, served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1976, then attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa where he received a B.A. in Education & Accounting. He was currently employed as a Department Manager at K-Mart in Waterloo.
Survivors include four brothers, Robert C. (Linda) Potratz of Cedar Falls, Ralph E. Potratz of Waterloo, Roy (Jean) Potratz of Janesville, Iowa and his twin brother, Russell C. (Glenda) Potratz of Cedar Falls; and two sisters, Laurel A. Eickhoff of Independence, Missouri and Loyce A. (Ken) Oelrich of Fayette, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran School or the family.
POTTER, H. JAMES was born August 13, 1947 in Newton, Iowa, the son of Harry H. and Dorothy (Busby) Potter. He married Diane Mathias on August 30, 1969 in Indianola, Iowa. Jim was a graduate of the University of Iowa. He was an editor at the Maquoketa Sentinel Press newspaper for six years and former campaign press secretary for Congressman Mike Blouin. Jim then took the position as editor and executive director at the Ames Tribune, where he worked for 7 years. He later worked for Starr & Associates in West Des Moines, Iowa for 5 years, and then became the City Editor at the Waterloo Courier, where he has worked for the past 7 years. Jim was a member of the Waterloo Community Playhouse and belonged to many volunteer and civic organizations. He died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, at 55 years of age.
Jim is survived by his wife, Diane, of Waterloo; two sons, J. Erik (Janet) Potter of Jewell, Iowa and Andrew Michael Potter of Denver, Colorado; his mother, Dorothy, of Newton, Iowa; and three brothers, Bruce (Jodi) Potter of Grinnell, Iowa, Jeff (Lorraine) Potter of Newton and Craig (Marcanne) Potter of Des Moines, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father.

POTTER, DR. LOIS SHEFTE, PhD was born December 15, 1924 in Volga, South Dakota, the daughter of Dr. Engebret K. and Laura (Johnson) Shefte. She married Albert Andrew Potter on June 18, 1960 at Danforth Chapel in Iowa City, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1997. Lois was a 1942 graduate of Volga High School. She graduated from Yankton College, Yankton, South Dakota, in 1946, with certifications in English, speech, social studies, and Spanish. Lois received additional training in radio and drama at the Univ. of South Dakota in 1947. She received her Master’s degree in speech pathology from the Univ. of Iowa in 1950. Lois completed her PhD in speech pathology at the Univ. of Wisconsin at Madison in 1959. Her teaching career began in 1946 at the high school in Redfield, South Dakota. During 1947-1948 she taught English, Speech and Drama in Yankton High School. She worked in private practice with aphasic speech patients in Burlington, Iowa during the summer of 1950 before joining the faculty of UNI in the Fall of 1950 as a speech and hearing consultant at the Malcolm Price Laboratory School. While doing graduate work during 1953-1954, Lois served as a speech therapist on the Medical Diagnostic Team of the Cerebral Palsy Center of the Univ. of Wisconsin Hospitals. She returned to the Lab School in 1954 and remained there as a speech therapist and member of the UNI Graduate Faculty until her retirement in 1991. During her time at the Lab School, Lois helped over 1000 children with speech, language and hearing disorders, and served the local area and the state through UNI’s extension programs. She was a Danforth Foundation Fellow and a member of Pi Kappa Delta, Pi Lambda Theta and Sigma Alpha Eta honorary societies. Lois served in several officer positions of the Iowa and National chapters of the Council for Exceptional Children, the Iowa and the American Speech and Hearing Associations, and the Association for Student Teaching. She died Saturday, November 27, 1999, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, at 74 years of age, of lung cancer.
Lois is survived by her son, Lee S. Potter of Morenci, Arizona; her step-son, Don Potter and his wife Judy of Beavercreek, Ohio; their two daughters, Jennifer Potter of Glendale, California and Diane Potter of Oak Park, Illinois; a niece, Katherine Stebbins and a nephew, Richard Shefte, both of Omaha, Nebraska; and her sister-in-law, Beatrice Shefte of Bellevue, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert and her parents; her brother, Duane Shefte; and a nephew, Steven Shefte.
Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 1999 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to The University of Iowa Foundation, PO Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52244 for the Albert A. and Lois Shefte Potter fund for prevention of blindness at the Center for Macular Degeneration.
POWELL, RAYMOND S., 93, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. He was born March 6, 1911 in Patrick County, Virginia the son of Waller Reeves and Lucy Alberta (Hubbard) Powell. He married Gladys L. Kauffman April 14, 1937 in Shelby County, Iowa. She died November 30, 1995. Before his retirement he was a dairy farmer, and in later years he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and his family.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol (Edward) Seufferlein of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and one son, Roger Powell of Ontario, California; five grandchildren, James, Terry, Daniel, and Steven Seufferlein, and Kevin Powell; four great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Grant, Michael, and Christopher Seufferlein.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, and six brothers.
Funeral services were Thursday, May 13, at Cedarloo Church of Christ in Cedar Falls. Interment was Friday, May 14, at Red Line Church of Christ Cemetery, near Harlan, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Cedarloo Church of Christ or Red Line Church of Christ.
POWERS, PATRICIA MAE , 52, of 1803 College St., Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at her home, following a lengthy illness. She was born September 20, 1948 in Luana, Iowa, the daughter of Virgil Adam and Mabel (Heins) Sawvell. Patricia was a 1966 graduate of Waterloo West High School. She married David Powers on November 28, 1968 in Waterloo, Iowa.
Patricia is survived by her husband David, of Cedar Falls; her son, Phil and his wife Michele of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Katelyn and Derek Powers, both of Cedar Falls; her mother, Mabel Sawvell of St. Paul, Minnesota; a brother, Virgil Dale Sawvell of St. Paul, Minnesota; two step-brothers, James and Don Pixler, both of Colorado; her mother and father-in-law, Rosemary and Max Powers of Davenport, Iowa and three sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her father and a step-brother, Lester Pixler, Jr.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
PREECE, LAURA JANE ACKLES- was born January 15, 1936 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Rodney and Dorothy (Vaughn) Corwin. She married James Ackles on August 18, 1955 in Waterloo, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1976. Laura married James Preece on March 14, 1987 in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1998. Laura was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and owned and operated The Levy SupperClub for two years in Dike, Iowa. She also was a custodian with the Cedar Falls School District for seven years. Laura died Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, at 66 years of age.
She is survived by two daughters Tammy (Greg) Boyer and Janine Preece, both of Cedar Falls, Iowa; eight sons, James Ackles of Waterloo, Scott (Beth) Ackles and Rob Ackles, both of Cedar Falls, James (LaWanda) C. Preece of Henderson, Tennessee, David (Lisa) Preece of Romeoville, Illinois, Ronald and Jerry Preece, both of Cedar Falls, and Robert Preece of Joliet, Illinois; her mother, Dorothy Corwin of Cedar Falls; twenty-seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Phyllis) Corwin of Reinbeck, Iowa and Delbert (Bobbie) Corwin of Marshalltown, Iowa; a sister, Sara Ann (Bob) Lovell of Waverly, Iowa and four sisters-in-law, Kathy Corwin, Carol Corwin, Bonnie Fowlkes and Mary Simpson.
Laura was preceded in death by her father, both husbands and three brothers, Walt, Larry and Allen Corwin.
Memorial services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2002 at College Hill Lutheran Church with inurnment at a later date in Hillside Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established.
